Shoddy Battle, a new D/P simulator

I have nothing more to contribute to this thread, but Rodan, your sig should read "Who's willing to sell their left nut for a shiny Teddiursa."

Just had to put that out there.

I have a shiny Teddiursa, but I didn't sell my left nut.

It's apparently being built with DB modding and customization in general in mind from the ground up. That's my kind of priority list!

Really, this program is very incomplete, but it's also very much here for us to play right now. Be grateful for the work that was put into it, and appreciate that it's not finished yet. I mean, Competitor looks to be a very long ways away yet; this is what we're going to have on the short term. I'm sure that it will be updated with the missing stuff, and for now, you can enjoy what's there. The battles are very fast, probably even faster than they are on NB. That's kinda cool.

I'm more interested in when it will be complete enough to ditch NB for it. I don't know that it's set to compete with Competitor, but it doesn't really have to. If it can make itself into a more useful program than Netbattle, I'd be happy.

While it kind of looks like their learnset/trait database was actually a random number generator it's nice that they at least have some product out there, I guess.

Stuff like Hammer Arm lowering the wrong stat is pretty funny though.

I'm pretty impressed by what these guys have put out despite its flaws. Too bad it will pale in comparison to Competitor... but it is nice to fool around with for now!

It is neutral, as it is good to use, but there are some shortcomings. On some turns, for example Leftovers will heal you to max HP. Megahorn from Choice Band Heracross also OHKOs my Bronzong, when in reality it should have been a 2HKO

So it looks like my team isn't bad after all. Apart from Thunder Wave Cresselia abuse because of no Natural Cure Blissey or Motor Drive Electivire

Hi, I'm one of the people working on Shoddy Battle, and I'm excited by your interest. Let me respond to some thoughts.

Re missing moves/abilities/items: the pokemon database has everything correct; if something is missing, it is because we haven't implemented it yet, not because we've forgotten it. You can see a list of things that are missing here. The list is quite lengthy, but I believe a beta with many things missing can still be worthwhile, and we hope that maybe somebody will work with us in completing it. Feel free to post on our forum (or here) if you are interested. Java is not hard to learn, and the knowledge required for working on Shoddy Battle is not much.

Re virus warning or whatever: I don't normally use Windows, but when I tried the program on Windows equip with Norton Antivirus, it did indeed offer the error, but it seems to be because 1234 (the port the official server is running on) is a "common port" for trojan horses to use. Since there is no trojan horse, the message does not affect the operation of the program.

Re buttons unclickable: this occasionally occurs when there is lag contacting the metaserver for the list of servers. If it occurs, we apologise, but you'll have to open your task manager and force quit javaw.exe (on windows) or java (elsewhere).

Re claims of dubious mechanics: I think the mechanics are fine, but if you believe you have found an issue, download the source and check out the mechanics.AdvanceMechanics class, which has the interesting formulae (mechanics.JewelMechanics does not have formulae because it is basically a superset of AdvanceMechanics).

Re claims of setting invalid amounts of EVs: sure, you can modify the files all you want, but it won't work to play, since the server validates the files, not the client.

As I said, thank you for your interest.

Oh, so never mind about the Trojan Horse. Is it possible for Trojan Horses to come through the port while Shoddy Battle is being uploaded though?

No, unless someone finds a really horrible bug in Java that allows you to execute arbitrary code.

Hmm, now that I see you at least know what you still need to do, and are aware of the unimplemented moves, I have a bit more confidence in it. :toast:

eh when I tried opening it it makes a blank website come up on my screen for some reason and doesn't load

but my computer is being a giant turd right now =/

How do you check status / look at stat-ups. I can't keepup because I can't see when I'm sleeping / maxed out, etc.

If you have on you what I call a "special effect" (e.g. sleep) then the pokeball icon for that pokemon is greyed out. All status effects, including ones that go away when switching, can be seen by hovering over pokeballs or the actual sprite of the pokemon.

Stat changes can't be seen yet, but we have a plan for them.
