Single type teams discussion

Actually Girrafarig can be used better in a psychic mono team cuz it can switch in on a ghost type attack without taking any damage.

No Ninjask in the list of bugs? Shedinja can make use of grudge on a mono team to disable a potential sweeper. Maybe give it a tad bit of speed to out speed things like rypherior with no speed EVs for destiny bond.

Rotomu is definitaly sexy cuz it can switch in on an EQ and use trick and Ascarf. Status the switch out. Electric mono can also use focus sash/counter.

Mono teams depend on suprise skills such as counter to take out it's one or 2 weaknesses. The strength of a mono team lies in its lack of weaknesses since most of them have the same weakness.

Poison:

Nidoking: All-around attacker; can effectively use physical or special moves. Poison Point makes it useful too.

Nidoqueen: Amazing defensive beast. Its defenses ensure at LEAST a 2HKO on it without a stat boost. Survive teh T-Tar EQ, then Super Power, which I have done, and OHKOed the T-Tar that was 16 levels higher.

Weezing: Still a really good hazer. Good defenses, as well as a statuser.

Arbok: Gained Crunch as a viable choice in D/P, so it can injure Psychics on the switch-in. Shed Skin and Intimidate are both really useful.

Venomoth: Already talked about.

Drapion: Does not really need to be discussed. It owns. It's immune to Psychic and is only weak to Ground.

Crobat: The really fast BAMF. Can outrun almost everything, but is still pwned by Jolteon. Anything that survives the first hit can seriously injure it.

Gengar: Remained beastly from 3rd gen. Diverse movepool; can be a kamikaze (Endure + salac + Destiny Bond) or a Special sweeper.

I'm just a poison fanboy. Its one of my favorite types. I had to get this out there.

Mono type only works in like a 3 V 3. Period. And water is the best type for it as already mentioned. My Battle Tower Team was Milotic, Gyarados, and Swampert. Milotic could easily challenge grassers thanks to high special stats and Ice Beam. After a DD, Gyarados fears nothing. Swampert was there for the electric immunity, because they are way more frightening then Grassers.

Don't count out electrics though. I did Electric monotype for GSC and raped Pokemon Stadium 2. Remember in that generation Earthquake was on EVERYTHING. Zapdos could get around the grounds, and I had to slap Hidden Power on everything.

IMO, Slowking really deserves a mention on the Water team, if only for being a good Specsmence counter. Empoleon could, too.

And why's Manaphy not on there? >_>

Actually i think we should create a solid thread for all mono type team dicussions and ideas. I mean there are many fans of mono teams out there, but due to overwhelming activity in smogon, have a harder time finding mono topics. It could also help clear up the traffic a little.

Mono teams don't really conform to standard move sets since mono and mixed teams have different needs. For this we need specialised discusion. And maybe consolidate ideas in one main post, while mono team ratings can also be posted?

What do u guys think?

I was recently thinking of a mono-ice team. I wanted to use all of the new abillities that revolve around hail. Snow-warning, Snow cloak, and Ice Body.
Abomnasnow(The only pokemon with the hail equivalent of Sandstream and the pokemon with the most weaknesses, lol)
Cloyster (Great physical wall with 180 Base Def, can spin and go BOOM)
Jynx (Special attacker with the defense of a wet piece of paper. SpDef and speed are ok)
Lapras (Huge hp and great movepool, tankish qualities)
Articuno (Here for Support. Heal bell from pkmn XD. Has Tailwind if you're into that.)
Galie (Pretty mediocre stats. But he has the Ice Body ability.)
Walrien (also has Ice Body but Thick Fat is preferable in most cases)
Regice (Huge, huge Spdef but lack of a recovery move outside of rest is not avalable)
Weavile (Sexy, just Sexy. Nothing else to say that hasnt already been said)
Glaceon (Awesome Spatk and defense, also gets evaison boost from hail)
Mamoswine (Good hp and excellent atk. Mediocre speed however. Gets stealth rock too)
Froslass (Pretty mediocre except for its speed, has snow cloak, gets spikes and Destiny bond)

All of these however are stealth rock weak. Articuno takes 50%, ouch!

what your mean? MAMOSWINE ROCKS!
also, a mono-Flying team would be easy to put together because there are just so many options including all of them being dual-types. a mono-dragon team would work for the same reason that a mono-psychic team works: because it's simply very powerful.

i think it would be absolutely incredible for smogon (or another hoster) to create a mono-type team tournament. you could change your type each round -- it would be a huge match of mindgames. the best part is that we'd see mono-dark and -bug teams to counter the viable Psychic type, mono-grass and -electric teams to counter the viable Water type, and of course mono-fighting teams out of sheer BlissFear. i'd be pumped to get one started, but its not really under my power to start something like that.

Not actually. Yes Dragons and Psychics are just powerful. But a psychic team has much more different typing combinations while almost all Dragons die to ice. Lets say adherence glasses frosslass?

what you could do is on a 2 v 2 battle have a pokemon that has one weakness, like electric that can learn skill swap(if any)have sheddinja out and use it on him and bam! only Ground can hit you.

Than it won't be a mono team wouldn't it?

Speaking of 2v2s, water mono can do that quite well. Surf+Rain dance+water absorb=gg

Shedinja's Wonder Guard ability can not be Skill Swapped.

Absorption abilities are worthless on mono teams. No one is going to Surf your Water-types, so Vaporeon isn't going to absorb them. If I were to use a mono team I'd probably use one of these:

Grass
- Celebi
- Sceptile
- Cradily
- Roserade
- Shiftry
- Ludicolo

Poison
- Nidoking
- Gengar
- Muk
- Drapion
- Crobat
- Toxicroak

Bug
- Heracross
- Pinsir
- Scizor
- Forretress
- Ninjask
- Yanmega

Fire
- Heatran
- Houndoom
- Moltres
- Infernape
- Camerupt
- Rapidash

Water
- Ludicolo
- Swampert
- Lanturn
- Suicune
- Floatzel
- Gyarados

Ice
- Abomasnow
- Froslass
- Glaceon
- Cloyster
- Mamoswine
- Weavile

Electric
- Zapdos
- Raikou
- Electivire
- Magnezone
- Lanturn
- Pikachu / Rotom

Fighting
- Heracross
- Infernape
- Poliwrath
- Breloom
- Lucario
- Gallade

I'd consider Hariyama too but he doesn't solve problems like the other guys do.

Rock
- Tyranitar
- Rhyperior
- Aerodactyl
- Solrock
- Cradily
- Probopass

Ground
- Rhyperior
- Dugtrio
- Quagsire
- Camerupt
- Garchomp
- Gliscor

Psychic
- Jirachi
- Gallade
- Slowbro
- Solrock
- Bronzong
- Azelf

Ghost
- Gengar
- Spiritomb
- Mismagius
- Dusknoir
- Driftblim
- Banette

Dark
- Weavile
- Tyranitar
- Umbreon
- Honchcrow
- Drapion
- Shiftry

Normal
- Snorlax
- Blissey
- Kangaskhan
- Staraptor
- Clefable
- PorygonZ

Dragon
- Garchomp
- Salamence
- Kingdra
- Altaria
- Flygon
- GIBLE

Flying:
Swellow
Zapdos
Moltres
Gliscor
Delibird -- it can rapid spin!
Mantine or Gyarydos

This team has no electric weakness - Gliscor is immune and Zapdos takes virtually no damage - Delibird can spin away Stealth Rocks and Mantine can surf rock pokemon.

Mono teams cannot be just a bunch of pokemon of the same type thrown together..... It needs much more analysis. For example:

How would this work for mono-grass?

Ludicolo
Tangrowth
Breloom
Cradily
Sceptile
Roserade

2 words: Crobat, Frosslass

unless u have a viable way of countering your weaknesses, any mono team will fail. For a grass mono, torterra works well against its poison type weakness. It is also physically capable of taking a few physical hits. Frosslass still takes it out though. The only grass types i see walling ice types is Ludicolo.

Without the move pools i can't say much about any team.

Actually, I sat down this morning to try and see which grass Pokemon counters which OU pokemon.

And they counter nothing. Really nothing. With a mono-grass team, no matter what your team is, you're going to get sweeped. Hard. By everything.

It's much worse than just Froslass and Crobat. It's also Azelf, Infernape, Salamence, Electivire, actually every pokemon that's used a lot.

Thats when strategy comes in. Don't expect to win if u don't have 1. Think counter or mirror coat.

It's "u" and "one". These few extra hits on your keyboard won't kill you.

Gliscor is immune and Zapdos takes virtually no damage

Zapdos is the easiest way for Electivire, Jolteon and other Electrics to come in, and considering the advent of Garchomp in D/P, there is very little reason not to carry an Ice move on your Electric. Mono flying teams are always weak to a combination of Electric and Ice, nothing to do about it (other than stalling with Articuno or something, but even that is going to kill you).

Torterra would be oh so great for countering your "Poison" weakness, except Gamefreak has granted us an assload of Grassers with a secondary Poison type, not to mention the godly gift named Cradily that also resists Flying. Who also learns Mirror Coat and is a Grass Pokemon. Did I mention Cacturne learns Counter?

In other news, if Grass Pokemon countered nothing they wouldn't be used. As it is, Celebi was one of the most debated Pokemon in D/P whether it was uber or not. Have you forgotten that one of the most prominent types in the later generations of Pokemon is Ground and that it only got better in D/P? "Grassers" in general is a rather rough term, but rest assured that some of them can take on Gyarados (Tangrowth is a good example) who only got better. Swampert is used a lot too last time I checked, and Tyranitar is not overly fond of some of them either. Blissey and Snorlax absolutely detest Leech Seed.

I think you missed some hits on your keyboard ;)

Also, don't mis-understand me. Grassers are awesome. However, a mono-grass team would suck because none of the grassers can counter some common threats.
