Smash history

I know that by this time everyone who has even the slightest interest in Super Smash Bros knows that Super Smash Bros. Brawl is coming out within a month or so. Many of you follow Sakurai’s updates periodically (or daily), and many of you regularly read and post in the Super Smash Bros Brawl forum here at Smogon.

Now, I’d like to tell you a bit about myself. Unlike many of the people here, I didn’t start playing video games until 5th grade. Super Smash Bros. was actually the first game I ever owned. I really liked it even though my cousin would beat me at it constantly, despite not having the game. My favorite character was (and still is) Pikachu, not because I liked Pokémon as well, but because it accentuated my frenzied, chaotic style of play. If I recall correctly, the original came out in April of 1999. I got it that December, and from then on until the release of Melee, I played Smash constantly, to the point where I am still a competent Pikachu player, despite sporadic use of the game these days. I have always been a casual player, and I feel that my skills have yet to grow. Even though this franchise is my favorite one of all time, I have never really played against anyone but my cousins and friends (who dislike Nintendo games) for the most part. I have and play Melee, but I have never truly experienced competitive Smash play, which is why I am looking forward to the multiplayer capabilities of Brawl in earnest.

Basically, I want this thread not to be about Smash, but about YOU, and the other Smash players on this forum. When you started playing one of the franchise’s games, why you like the franchise (or quite possibly hate it), how your playing style has evolved and/or refined over the years, and what characters you like to play as, and why. Just as importantly, what your hopes for the new installment of Smash Bros. are, notably for how it will influence the growth of your skills at large. I’d like to discourage discussion about Brawl, in particular any speculation on possible or confirmed aspects of the game (characters, modes, etc.)

Making yet another Smash thread may seem superfluous to some, but I have confidence that it will promote interesting discussion.

Feel free to lock this thread if it detracts from the Renaissance forum at large.

When I was in .. 2nd? Maybe 3rd grade, I decided to ask my parents for a video game system..

And I got the N64! The first game we got was.. SUPER SMASH BROS. so yeah. First game I ever got and played on one of my own video game systems, so the "Smash" series is definitely important to me.

My favorite character in SSB was Pikachu as well. I loved Pokemon, and Pikachu was just "THE" icon back at that time.

Got Melee as well. First game with my Gamecube. I do remember that I didn't know the Gamecube needed a memory card, so.. for a week, I had to just.. "play." Over and over, unlocking Ganondorf over and over again until we finally had time to buy one (or find one, perhaps!). Great game. Totally fell in love with a lot of the characters, and main'd Sheik (though I surprise a lot of people with Zelda as well). I'd definitely say I'm really good with the majority of the Melee characters. I really liked the style and layout of the game.

Honest to god - barely played it. Played a bit of melee at friends houses. Emulated the original on PC until I relaised as my Smash skills went up my Counter-Strike: Source skills went down, so i stopped. I'd never owned a Nintendo console until Wii, so I'm definatly looking forward to Brawl like crazy.

I never actually owned SSB; I just played it with a couple friends of mine. I liked to play as Yoshi even though I had no clue how to actually play. When I play it now I like to use Luigi and although I know how to short hop/L-cancel, I'm pure shit at SSB.

I didn't actually own SSBM until Christmas of grade 8, I think. I still played my same friends, and we still used the same characters. In the beginning of grade 10 though I moved to my new house, and since I no longer had anyone to play with, I decided to go online and learn the advanced techniques. I picked Falco as my main. I learned all the advanced techniques: wavedashing, L-cancelling, short hopping, short hop lasers, and even shine combos. Eventually, I found someone nearby who also played SSBM, and although he didn't know any advanced techniques, he wanted to learn. He did learn, and he decided to main Fox. I, however, grew bored of Falco, and after watching that Koopacolypse video, I decided to main Bowser, a character I had always liked.

Nowadays, I still main Bowser because he's awesome, and I've improved with him a lot. I've wandered around and tried characters like Zelda, DK, Ness, Ganon, Link, and G&W, but I always went back to Bowser in the end. We also have more people that play SSBM with us now, which is cool. I mainly play FFAs with my friends now, picking a random character to play with.

I don't own either SSB or SSBM but have played them a lot (especially SSB), and usually played with Kirby.

SSB was released when i was 12-13, and it was awesome from beginning to the end, i don't have a problem with replaying that game because it was so fun. I remember playing it with friends that came to my house.Back then i had less obligations so i could just play it all the afternoon. I liked to play with Kirby, Mario and Link on this one.

When Melee came out, i didn't had a Game Cube, it took me two years or so to get one(because i had a PS2 at first), and melee was my first game on it, i already knew all the roster and stuff so didn't impress me like the first, but i played it for hours with a friend though. I remember playing several times with him to 99 stocks, it was fun lol. I used Ness, Ice climbers, Mr. game & watch and Link as my most recurrent characters.

I stared playing smash when it was first released in 1999. I however never owned the N64 game myself. When I first stared I played only Pikachu and I mostly spammed B moves. I guess I was ok because I managed to win a small tournament at school 3 years after its realease.

I purchased Melee in 2001 the day after Christmas. I had just got my Gamecube for Christmas. I started using Link as my main character but later moved towards Samus which is my current main. Through the many years of frequent play and consistent handing of my ass to me by my best friend I feel that I have improved a great deal. I no longer spam B moves and I am finally beginning to hold my own.

I am looking forward to brawl with the inclusion of my favorite character, Snake. I hope to play more at a competitive level for this upcoming game. And just like like snake says "killing is one of those things that gets easier every time you do it."

I first saw Smash online when it was still on its way to America with basically a bunch of people saying "this is going to be an awesome game" (I think I was in 7th grade at the time). I agreed and my dad agreed to get it for me when it came out, which he did. It was pretty much the only game I played for a very long time, and I would come home from school every day and play it. I got...very good.

Then Melee came out and I never even got it for some reason. I didn't really like it...though I've played it more recently and have liked it a lot more. I bought it for the first time about two weeks ago and have been working my way up the skill ladder.

So, yeah, excited for Brawl! Because the original was a damn good video game.

SSB was probably the 4th N64 game I had (following Pokemon Stadium, Dk64, and Kirby). Played it with my bro a lot, we sucked at it (couldn't even beat Master Hand on easy!). We stopped playing for a very long time. Melee came out, and that was THE game you were playing at that time in my group. Though I wasn't even 13 yet, so my parents wouldn't let me buy it or play it (yeah, strict). When I turned 13, I played it along with FE:PoR to death. I wanted to be like a pro so badly too (Wavedashing with my main as Marth wasn't fun). Got bored of it aftet that whole summer though. Now I play it regularly to get my hype up for Brawl. I play as Marth still, and I'm close to being able to short hopping + C sticking on a normal basis.

Just 3 more days til Brawl in Japan now :happybrain:

<----my name that I have used in this community since 2001 is Captain Falcon + Kirby, so clearly I win!

My family was only allowed to have consoles from one brand at once, so we chose Nintendo because of Pokemon and the Game Boy, and we owned Smash Brothers the week it came out! I had three brothers, so I pretty much always had to play at least one of them, and only one is any good at it, so I never really elevated my game to an elite level in either of the first two games.

ah... the days of 1999...

I was a little tyke back then (no pun intended) and had gotten Mario kart and banjo kazooie as well as a nintendo 64 for christmas in 1998. One day, My mother told me of a video game comeing out. She said, "It has Yoshi, Pikachu, Link, and mario in it" which made it an instant want for me. I got it later for my birthday, three days afte it came out.

My whole family loved it to death (strangely enough, we only unlocked jigglypuff and captain falcon...)

Well, here's a few stuff about it

I never got SSB.

Then in Japan, my friend played SSBM with me and I had no idea what was going on because my Mewtwo was dying against Lv. 3 opponents. I hate Mute City!

I recently got SSBM a few months ago, and I started out playing as Link for no apparent reason. I hated him so I decided to toss him. Then, I started playing as fox and I immediately enjoyed using him. As more and more characters get unlocked, I start learning some other stuff too. By the time I got to Marth, I started to learn Shield grabbing. When I unlocked Luigi, I started to practice wavedashing and I still do now. Now I've gotten all of the characters and is currently having problems beating up the Event Match with Ness vs Samus/Kirby/Fox/CF/Falco >_< (although I recently beat up Event #50 with Ganon, and someone PLEASE help me).

Now practicing with Sheik, although I love using Marth to death.

Of course, I wouldn't get this far without the help of SePh.

When I saw SSB in Official Nintendo Magazine I nearly freaked. Mario versus DK versus Link?!
I can't remember how much I played the original to be honest.

SSBM is one of my favourite games of all time. I still play it and it's sitting in my Wii right now. Best £40 ever spent on a game in terms of lifespan. It still has the HMV sticker on it. :)

In terms of playing style I really prefer the hard-hitting, more physical characters like Mario, Dr. Mario and Donkey Kong. For some reason I keep thinking that Kirby had a similar play-style to this in SSB but became a lot softer in Melee. Apparently he's back to his original style in Brawl, whatever that means.
Sometimes I would like ranged attacks when the foe won't stay still but I prefer the moveset to have generally decent knockback and force.

erm, at some festival there was playable SSBM, which I was pretty good at, so I bought it in like 2004.

that's it, haven't played SSB ever, so I'll certainly download it when it comes out on VC.

Heh, my first experience with Smash was at a party hosted by my parents' friends. I was about 8 or 9 at the time, playing against teenagers in 50-stock matches... needless to say, I didn't get to play that much that day but it piqued my interest ever since. All the neighborhood kids had N64s so whenever I'd go over their house, etc I played (I never got an N64 - or a GameCube for that matter) and actually got to around their skill level despite not having the game.

When Melee came out it was basically the same thing, I didn't get the game until early 2006 when I got the Wii. My main used to be Captain Falcon, then I moved to Marth and now am best as Falco, although I'm pretty decent with almost all of the other characters (beating people up with Bowser is fun)

I never got the original Smash Bros, but I did lend if off a friend for a few weeks, during which I played it to death.

When Melee was announced, I knew I wasn't gonna pass up on this one. I rushed out and bought it on PAL release...May 24th IIRC. Since then, I've racked up well over 1000 hours of multiplayer and grown to truly appreciate the intricacies of the gameplay. I haven't really mained anyone because I have this horrible tendency to just play as the character from the game that I'm currently playing. When I got Metroid Prime, I played as Samus for months, but then when Wind Waker came along, I just HAD to play as Link. I'm fickle like that.

I never really looked into competitive Smash though, but that should be much more accessible to me with the Wii's online capablities. Can't wait for Brawl.

It all started with this man:

The First Smash Enthusiast!

That man began the Smash phenomenon, and soon it spread outward.

Soon players picked up Smash for themselves, thanks in no small part to Nintendo and HAL Labs.

I've been playing Smash since 64. We played it all the time in College, they eshewed Melee, which I possesed immense skill in.

Melee was quite awesome. It was more balanced, and the Adventure Mode was well Fleshed Out. Home Run contest and Multi-Man Melee provided great training grounds.

Now comes BRAWL. Brawl appears to be insanely awesome as of this moment and I will probably use the Tax Rebate Bush is talking about to purchase a Wii. Awesomeness shall ensue.

smash 64 was my favourite game for the n64, me and my friends used to play it all the time. i mained yoshi back then, and continued to in melee, which i bought a gamecube for (yes, just for that one game, but it was worth it). ive been playing smash for years now and could not be more excited about brawl

the original ssb came out when I was in 6th grade or so. both my parents worked so after school I went to this youth center where they had a N64 with two games: ssb and waverace 64. needless to say, nobody gave two shits about waverace and everyone just played smash. at first I was really bad but I eventually got better since you had to give up your controller if you lost. pretty soon the competition there was really intense with tons of people watching if there was a good battle.

when I heard that melee was coming out, I rushed out and bought a gamecube just for it. even though I bought other gamecube games, I think I've played melee more than all those other games combined. now with brawl on the horizon I look forward to dropping out of college and playing brawl 20 hours a day.

It was one of the games I never owned for my N64, I played it at my mates house but I never really got into it. Once the GC was released my brother bought it for me, and I spent hours playing Smash and Mario over and over, soon my attention in Mario waned and Smash became the main game of choice.

After many tournaments with my friends I realised that I was easily the best until I come up against Aj when me and him became friends and I realised I had alot to learn. Me and Aj are equals he is alot more Tech. and can beat the game in modes that I cannot, however I can still beat him 60% of the time in a one-on-one.

Character of Choice: Link/'Chu though I had a fad with Marth and G&W.

Most hated Characters: Jiggly & Kirby

Confirmed Brawl Characters most likely to play: Ike, Link, 'Chu & Sonic

Unfortunately, I have a life now and a Gf so my game time has somewhat diminished still I'll be squeezing as much of the love I can get from this game... When it gets announced to come out in England :(

I saw the awesome commercial for SSB. I was like "OMG, Pikachu versus Mario characters, that's awesome!" (if you notice, Pikachu is the only true oddball of the 4). I later rented it to see if it was worth buying, and of course my friends and I said "Yes.

Shortly after, my friend buys the game before I get a chance to, so I ended at his house ALOT, even after I got the game.

Then a course Gamecube was coming out, and SSBM shortly after. I was already a fanatic of SSB, so I just HAD TO HAVE IT! I received one that christmas and to me, SSBM had ever element I had wanted and more. More characters, better graphics, more stages and even an adventure mode.

My first console was the N64, and I got SM64 with it. I didn't like it that much (I'd like it more now, I'm sure), but then I got SSB. I really liked it, and I played as Pikachu. Then I switched to Kirby.

Later I realized that regular A-air was good! :O:O:O

The changed that attack to the spinning thingy i melee.

Poor Kirby.

Anyways, then I got melee, and liked it very much. Much later, one of my friends called, after borrowing the game (with Memory Card). He told me that all my game data was erased. I have no idea how that managed to delete it though.

So I started playing it again. Less than 24 hours (i think) after that, I had all characters except for Mewtwo and G&W. I left the game on for the night, got Mewtwo, then G&W.

yep.

Read about the first Smash game in an EGM when it was showing games that were coming out in Japan and had been interested in it since that point. Bought the first the first day it came out, same with Melee, fun ensued, etc.

I first saw SSB being played at a friend's birthday party. I joined in, it was a lot of fun, but I didn't end up buying the game. I can't remember who I really played with the most, though I think it might've been Fox.

Several years later, I was the first in my group of friends to get a Gamecube, and I started playing Melee like crazy. My friends all called it inferior to the original (though I'm pretty sure that was more due to the fact that they hadn't adjusted to the controls yet and I was beating them every time), but eventually they got Gamecubes of their own and it became our favorite game to play at parties. I eventually migrated towards using Link, Marth, and Mario the most. I never got into playing it remotely competitively (I wasn't really a member of any online communities at the time either, so I had no idea of what tier lists and such were), so I've never tried wavedashing and the like.

I always wanted to play Melee ever since it came out for the gamecube but I only recently played it about 6 or so months ago when I decided to purchase it for my cousin so when he came over we could play it. Now I own a Wii so I play Melee somewhat often and look forward to the next game.

what drew me into the game is that I could use Jigglypuff because shes one of my favorite pokemon form the anime and the game.
