Smeargle's Studio General Thread: Spriting and Banners go here!

Sure, Mordock. I don't mind at all.

Good idea about the Hall of Fame (and the bi/triweekly prize). And yes, I know you have lots of Pokes. I have about a box of good ones myself, although my Wifi doesn't like a lot of people.

Judges would be the best approach. But in general people who work harder on their fusions tend to have better results. I don't think the lack of judges is a problem though. There are a few people here with an eye for sprites.

I don't like pixel overs =( I kind of suck at them.

Sounds good. I was thinking I could take care of the banner and hall of fame (and trophies).

For the reserved posts, I'm thinking:

Post 1: Introduction, Rules, Theme, Prizes (managed by 1337 and Mordock)
Post 2: Judges, Contestants (managed by 1337 and Mordock)
Post 3: Hall of Fame (managed by me)

Of course we'll mutually agree on the theme, prizes, etc.

Do any of you guys have MSN or go on IRC? It would be a lot easier to discuss this there.

Unfortunately, I do not have MSN or IRC. We can bring this to PM if you want.

Obviously, the first post would be the intro along with all that other good stuff.

The second post would be judges and contestants.

I don't think the Hall of Fame should go in the same thread as the WSC. Probably in another thread.

This is fine discussing it here, PMs aren't really necessary :P.

I think the Hall of Fame should be in the same thread, it just saves space of another whole thread being made (considering the WSC will probably be stickied). But that's fine if you'd prefer to have it in another thread.

I think after we agree on the post contents we can make a full rough draft to PM. 1337 and Mordock you guys can either team up and do 1 and 2, and I'll do 3, or we can all do our separate drafts and decide which one to use.

Good point, considering the HoF will probably only be one post. We'll keep it in the same thread as the WSC.

I'll just do the little number representing posts

1: Introduction, Rules, Theme, Prizes (Mordock and I will manage this, but I think we'll leave the rules and theme open to suggestion by the public)
2: Judges, Contestants, Special Mentions (Mordock and I)
3: Hall of Fame (Chaos)

That's good, Chaos669, though, something about the patterns on the jacket don't seem right... I can't put my finger on it though. Everything else looks great!

And now, I present Wobbrai. Or, Darkbuffet. Or, perhaps Sonansrai...

wobrai.png
Lol that's funny.

The Primal Palkia Fuzzberry did also looks cool. ^__^

Ok one more thing:

Kyogre with Darkrai's colors.

That sounds perfect 1337. How will we take theme ideas? It would clog up the thread. I say we decide as a group to make up themes, or get users to suggest themes with their submission.

If you guys want you and Mordock can do the rough draft for posts 1 and 2, and I'll take care of 3.

Fireburn I'll do your request later if no one does - I'm in the middle of a HUGE pixel-over :P.

Here's another banner i made if anyone wants to use it... its one of my favourites because of the effects, plus one of my favourite saying...

Tell me what you guys think...

How......the group idea is probably best, as the contestants may submit hard themes that not everyone can do.

I'll get working on my rough draft in a minute or two. I've got to go work on Deoxys/Electivire.

Okay, I'll have my rough draft up by tonight for sure.

On another note: Koffing Pixel-Over WIP

I have the colours filled in, but not shaded. I outlined it already and it's ready for shading. You have no idea how hard it was to outline this fucker and empty the colours. Up to this point took me two hours, I'm expecting the shading to take a long time as well.

KoffingWIP5neat.png

I would REALLY appreciate some C+C so I can fix any mistakes now.

The only nitpick I have with the first one is that the sand volcano thing on his back looks too flat.

All of them are really good though.

Oh, and hi to all the new spriters :D

Hmm...I see that too, now that you mention it. The problem is though, the sand is too flat to cast a shadow, so I'm at a loss as to how to fix it. ;_;

Thank you. But still...

I've been spriting on-and-off for four years. I'm not new. =/

New to the thread, maybe.

Taking requests. Time to sprite, but no inspiration.

For the newer people, here is the kind of spriting I do:
Lugia___Heart_Gold_Sprite_by_mvidmaster.png
Suicune_sprite_by_mvidmaster.png
th_24toed.png
Flamedramon_sprite_by_mvidmaster.png

About that Lugia, the sprite as a whole is good, but the one thing that bothers me is that blue parts of the eyes is extremely thick, while the sclera (white part) is way too thin. Thin the blue down a bit, while thickening the sclera.

Also, Suicune's neck seems non existent. Making the head seem awkwardly angled.

Okay, I'll have my rough draft up by tonight for sure.

The Koffing looks nice, but some parts of the smog clouds look really thin, it probably has something to do with the color choice of the outline in parts. Darken the colors a bit. Also, I don't like the look of the pupils, they seem to tiny and fat to me.

kirlia.png

I was just messing around with Kirlia and Gardevoir and it sort of turned into that.

That sprite is win. Really win. The only nitpicks I have are that the red thing should cast more of a shadow on the arm, and that hideous corner on the end of our left head spike.

PrimalPalkia.png

PRIMAL PALKIA SAYS HI, MYSTERY DUNGEON STYLE.

Seems nice, although the white pixels on the edge of the orange mark on the neck seem a bit odd. =/

Personally, I think it would look better with Gallade's right arm. That's just me though.

Thanks for the C+C. I can't seem to get the smoke to work, it's very difficult. I'm done shading everything else, but the smoke is killing me - very hard to make thick =/.

Anyway I'm going out for awhile, expect to see the finished version up tonight as well as my rough draft for the hall of fame. Good luck with the other posts Mordock and 1337 ^^).

I'm wondering if you have OCD right now.

Primal Palkia looks very nice.

OCD? Nah. Just schizophrenia.

Thank you. ^_^

I started on a Dragonite scratch while I was at my grandparents' today. I'm going back Thursday to finish it. =D

I'm going to do some spriting later tonight, too. Work a bit on my Buizel-Dex. Catch you all then.

Nice to see you back, Canti! Try a Giratina scratch. =3

I didn't know they let people in insane asylums use computers. You must be a special case.

Can't wait to see the Dragonite scratch. Hope it turns out well =D

Ima go and work (maybe finish) my post now. And play some Shoddy <3

I didn't realize you guys were starting contests now, I haven't checked this thread in a long time. Anyway I think it's a great idea and I especially like the Hall of Fame idea. I noticed some of you were talking about trophies, but where would the trophies go? In the users signature or under their name? I really think the Hall of Fame idea is the best idea as far as 'prizes' go, and I think it should have it's own thread with a list of winning sprites with details of each sprite. What was used to make it, which contest it won, etc. I'd be glad to help out with some of this stuff too and / or participate. It's a good idea.

Glad you like the idea ^_^ The trophies would go in the hall of fame along with the winners. The winning user could put "Winner of WSC __" in their sig if they wanted to. But concerning a different thread: we'd be creating the thread for one post, unless we decided to do it post by post. If we put it in the current WSC, more people will probably see it.

I'm sure chaos will like your ideas concerning the Hall of Fame sprites. They're good ideas.

There's not a lot to do with the WSC other than brainstorming themes, prizes, and who wins. There's probably a spot for you to help somewhere in there.

And concerning the intro (I made a second post too :D), here's mine:

The Smogon Forums Weekly Spriting Contest

Welcome to the Smogon Forums Weekly Spriting Contest, a contest that takes place each week just for spriters!

Rules

1: Absolutely no stealing. If you are found stealing, you will be disqualified from the current WSC after one instance of stealing, and completely banned from the WSC after two instances.

2: Follow the theme and sub-theme. If the theme is fusions and the sub-theme is humanoid, then you don't use Relicanth for your fusion.
If you don't know if your sprite is qualified for the contest, ask in the WSC thread or PM the host.

3: We have the right to reject any entry that is deemed inapropriate.

4: Have fun!

OK, now for what you actually have to do.

This week's theme is Re-types. In case you don't know, Re-types are: Basically, a Pokémon is taken and edited to look like it is of a different type than it really is.

This week's sub-theme is First Generation Types Only. In other words, only types that were in the First Generation are allowed for type changes.

Dragonfree, for the re-type definition.

Would you mind if I gave a shot at writing it? I'm in a bit of a writing rut right now, and I would like something to kick me out of it. P=

Glad you like the idea of it ^^). I like your idea about the Hall of Fame, but we're keeping it within the thread (once if hopefully gets approved). I think the list of winners with sprites would be cool as well.

As for trophies, one of the judges or hosts would custom make a trophy for the user that one, and it's placed into the hall of fame beside their name.

Glad you like the idea ^_^ The trophies would go in the hall of fame along with the winners. The winning user could put "Winner of WSC __" in their sig if they wanted to. That's excellent. After I finish Koffing I'll make a banner and the HoF post. Then I'll PM the drafts to Aragorn and EE to see if it gets approved.

The Smogon Weekly Spriting Contest

Welcome one, welcome all to the one and only Smogon WSC! A Spiritng Contest (And Possibly an Art Contest if we can be bothered to make one) for all you aspiring digital artists to compete and improve your abilities.

The Rules

~ All Smogon Forum Rules Apply, This is a bit obvious.

~ Absolutely no stealing. If you are found stealing, you will be disqualified from the current WSC after one instance of stealing, and completely banned from the WSC after two instances.

~ The theme is there for a reason, all entires that don't follow the theme will be turned down.

~ Do not ask when the next contest/poll will be out.

~ Not a rule, merely a suggestion, try to keep it with the size limit of the sprite (56x56 for the First Generation Style, 64x64 for the Second and Third Generation Styles, and 80x80 for the Fourth Generation Style). Also, try to keep the background transparent.

Other nonsense:

Prizes:
An inclusion in the Hall of Fame (wrap a link to the hall of fame around the words hall of fame), and after x, y, or z amounts of wins, you will get a trophy.

Judges:

Theme Suggester:
Description:

And that's it, be sure to follow the rules, try your best, and have fun!

Finished up with the basics of it, haven't added in any silly coding yet.

That looks pretty good, but it's pretty much the same as 1337's ^^).

As for trophies, I suggest after 1 win you get a medal, after two a bronze trophy, after 3 a silver trophy, and after 4 a gold trophy.

As for the subtheme for the first week, I was thinking 1st gen types only (but using 4th Gen sprites). What I mean is that you can't retype from, or to Steel or Dark.

OK, since we haven't gone into it yet, we need to decide on judges. 3 or 4 seems to be a good number.

I'm electing myself because I really haven't been spriting as well recently, and I want to see what the contest brings in without having bias.

Me and Mordock are working on a sub-theme for re-types right now, so expect that soon. We were going to go with one type of re-type, but Chaos' idea seems better.

@ninjabait: I'd elect yours over mine once you add the theme as well as coding (and split that into two posts).

And the medal idea is good.

EDIT: Yayz!

They look very different to me. =/

Hmm... I think we should have 1 Win = Ribbon, 3 Wins = Medal, 5 Wins = Bronze Trophy, 7 Wins = Silver Trophy, and 10+ Wins = Gold Trophy.

Well, if you ask me, we can include the subtheme in the theme, resulting in:

Theme: First Generation Retype
Theme Suggester: Teh 1337ness and Chaos669
Description:

Instead of:

Theme: Retype
Subtheme: First Generation Pokemon Only

Don't see anything wrong with that, I suggest an odd number of judges, though.

I don't see the fault of having it in one post. And this is just a basic template of it, we'll add that in for each contest, or at least, that's what I was thinking for it. 8D

I like Chaos' medal idea better than yours, ninjabait. Very few people will get 10+ wins. 4 wins seems a bit more realistic.

Why an odd number? It doesn't matter, but I'm wondering.

Your idea for retypes is good. I would explain it because I wouldn't immediatly understand it.
