Smocon '10: UK

forgot to mention this: it'd be helpful to put down when you're available (so dates when you're on break etc) so definite dates can be made/ruled out

From my personal experience in planning previous Smocons, the best way to go about this is to have a set timeframe and tell people what it is up front, then make it their business to get there.

That being said, I will be buying lottery tickets from here on out.

i wish i could go to this, if only to have that pint with lee i promised him ! (also maybe to casually fornicate with akuchi??)

so during my break the weekends are 19/20 and 26/27 december and 2/3 and 9/10 january.
boxing day is a bad time for this so yeah, those would be the dates for this so post which one you'd prefer

edit: mcgraw makes a decent point about the weather, i dunno how everyone feels about waiting till the summer to do this

I can do any of the dates as far as I know, checked the calendar and seems nothing is planned so far during those times so definitely should be able to come.

we live in britain, the weather will always suck regardless of season. besides, the past few summers have been total washouts.

9/10 January is best for me as it's the only days on the list that i'm not working. i gather most people will be back at uni/school by then though so i'm prepared to lose here ._.

Yeah 9/10 January are the best dates for me. Im away for the rest of the time.

For accommodation I suggest that you just stay in a hostel - its cheap and bearable.

The point about weather is moot - we're British for Christ's sake.

As I stated before, any weekend is fine, but 19/20 December or 2/3rd January would be best for me. What about new years? I suppose most of you already have planned but I was by the river last year at midnight, and there was an amazing fireworks display by the millennium wheel, and a great party atmosphere all night.

akuchi where are you parents at, house parties are always good

so if this happens on new years is it going to be a 31dec/1jan thing or what

atm 2/3 or 9/10 jan are probably gonna be best

edit: i'm game for a four days of liver-battery (although if we're to seriously consider 4 days then accommodation will be an issue)

accommodation will be cripplingly expensive at new years', and i'll probably be back in scotland by then

unfortunately i still can't give you set dates about when i'm down because my faculty are incompetent and haven't given me exam dates yet

I suggest we try and find somewhere that rents by the room and not by the person, london should have plenty of them. Two of those and we'll be fine.

My house is just outside Bristol, though Swansea is always an option!

Why London? Manchester or even Birmingham is a more central location.

I should be easily available by then, although it will be a funny time for me since my birthday is 13th January.

as i said, if you want it somewhere else come up with things to do/plans/staying places to back it (oh and don't expect me to spearhead any meeting outside london obviously), and have like proper plans if you are seriously suggesting a better place than london to do this

right now the main issue is accommodation. that link mcgraw provided seems the best i can find so far, £12 per person per night and we can have a big up room all together. as fun as a 4-day smocon would be i don't think many people will be able to afford 3 nights' accommodation and other expenses, so it's gonna look like a weekend thing.

if someone finds somewhere to stay that you pay per room rather than per head then that means any maybes can just make it if they can. if it's gonna be per person, then things will be more difficult. i'm doing some searches and i ask everyone else as well and report any findings here.

  • When can you be in London (and for how long, i suppose):
I can probably be there on any date that's finalised, it just depends if my friends and/or girlfriend make plans for a set date before you do.
  • How likely it'll be that you'll be in London (if you're a longshot then I won't go out of my way to accommodate you in my plans, for example):
For now, I'll set not-too-likely - I'd really love to get there, but everything I do will have to be preplanned to make sure I can definitely afford everything and still have money left over. Not having a job makes everything very difficult, never mind a trip across the country.
  • How old are you?
I'm 20, although I'll be 21 on January 10 if it happens after then (but that obviously means I can't attend if that weekend is chosen).
  • What are you interested in doing?
Most anything, really. My real interest is sharing a few drinks with the members I'm more familiar with currently, such as Lee and Dan Dan. Maybe a night or two we could spend in one persons room with some music on, play some cards and/or drinking games etc. I'm all for sight-seeing provided it won't cost a great deal, maybe going out for lunch or whatever else. I'd be up for playing some DS to DS Pokémon battles, maybe a bash on some other games if someone wants to bring a Wii or other DS games. I am quite big on drinking so don't mind getting bladdered the whole time either.
  • What can you afford?
Not a lot. I have no job so I'm currently managing on £140 a month. So, unless I can manage to hardly spend anything from now until the suggested time, I won't have much more than that. However, considering it'll be Christmas time, I'll have to spend money on presents, which makes it ever more likely that I cannot attend if London is the chosen location. However, if I find a Christmas job I may be able to spend a little more. Although that creates the problem of me potentially not being available on the date that's eventually selected..

If this happens I will try my best to be there, but if not, perhaps we can do it again in the future, but go to Manchester instead :P

Im in!!!!

when can you be in london (dates) (and for how long, i suppose)

Weekends are best, and to be honest the only time i won't be available is from the 18th dec - 7th Jan so whatever the majority decide.
how likely it'll be that you'll be in london (if you're a longshot then i won't go out of my way to accommodate you in my plans, for example)

I live just outside London, Im studying at uni so im always in and around london so this won't be a problem.

how old are you
24

what are you interested in doing

Anything, should be good whatever happens

what can you afford

I have a student loan and jobs so should be ok

I could've sworn I'd already posted here...

when can you be in london (dates) (and for how long, i suppose)

I don't think I have any exams this January and I really don't care about skipping college so I can pretty much make whatever date you set. I'd only be staying 2 nights at the most.

how likely it'll be that you'll be in london (if you're a longshot then i won't go out of my way to accommodate you in my plans, for example)

I can hop on a train whenever. It's really not difficult for me to get to London.

how old are you

19

what are you interested in doing

Gigs, Drinking, meeting members I haven't already met, GEC, sight seeing I don't mind but I'm not really interested in the famous landmarks and things like that, I like to visit all the underground and alternative shops but not really buy anything, also if someone wants to bring a console I'll happily batter you all on fifa.

what can you afford

I can always find money from somewhere, but like I've already said, I won't stay for more than 2 nights.

Arrange it and I shall come.

So the guestlist is looking like:

m0nkfish
Havak
cookie
McGraw
akuchi
Lee
Tab(<Tab> you should give me a (maybe) though)
Toothache
Kinneas
Dan Dan
Reno
sbc
Akiratron
iluvtogekiss
froggy25
Ace Matador.
joel22
Giant Enemy Crab
iKitsune
Osirus182 (gutted that your name is Lee too though ._.)
DM (if lottery numbers come up)
Taylor (maybe)
#Az (looking like a big maybe)

So that's 20+ people but knowing sods law it'll probably end up being a lot less than that. A handful live in London but we're still gonna need some serious accomodation. A hostel is still looking the best option because if we all throw in a tenner or whatever we should have no problem other than it being a little bit cramped!

DM said:
Find a hotel with a cheap rate, find out how many people need a room, then book it on a card. Make sure you trust the people enough to pay you back, though I know skarm/Jump/Fish never had any problems (I think we're all close enough friends here that no one would get stiffed).

Anyway, just trying to get an update on this really because I'd like to book my tickets asap (was reading an article in the paper the other day how a random train ticket only cost a tenner if booked a month in advance whereas the same ticket bought on the day cost over 300 quid v_v;). I know it's a big burden for cookie so if there's any other cockneys who would be willing to look around for accomodation etc then please do!

okay, i need everyone here to post again if:
you need accommodation and are down with paypalling me £20 (i don't really know any of you well enough to trust that you pay me when we meet) (my email is snip)
and yes i am thoroughly enjoying the irony of this considering my avatar

i'm on travelrepublic.co.uk and i'm getting some pretty sweet deals for around that price (i'll make up the difference buying you a pint or something lol): i'd like to book these asap before i can't find anything since finding hotels during the holiday season is gonna be kinda hard.

money-wise (excluding your journey to london):
£20-ish for accommodation
£15 for a couple travelcards (assuming we don't use them before 9:30am), less if you have an oyster card
£5-£10 for booze if we're drinking at the hotel
£ however much you fancy spending to eat

also if anyone wants to do particular things now's a good time to mention it so i can book things etc
