Smocon '10: UK

ah, Im not so sure about those dates.
Saturday- I don't know
Sunday- My 18th.
While I know that some of you are cool and all, I would rather spend my b day with closer mates and stuff, not meaning any offence though.
Count me out I guess :(

i've sent a reminder email to some people, so if i've forgotten anyone then here's a bump:

GET THE MONEY TO ME BY THE END OF THIS MONTH IF YOU WANT A PLACE TO STAY FOR THE NIGHT

Payment for accomodation sent. I also have train tickets booked, made a huge saving by booking in advance.

I am hoping to drop by the Darwin Centre on Saturday (Natural History Museum). May as well hit the Science Museum too. This means South Kensington, so I'd like to browse around Harrod's. I don't know when people are planning on meeting, or what you guys want to do, but that's my plan.

For lunch, there is a Southeast Asian restaurant just off Oxford Street that, in my opinion, is good value for money. Most other places will be either expensive, shitty or both. I know a bunch of decent restaurants, but don't feel pressured into thinking you have to spend x amount. Get a McDonald's if that's what you fancy.

I won't be around for Sunday.

also accommodation is booked and there is a spare bed going so if you're reading this sometime within the next month and you still wanna come but need a place to stay, we can sort something out (hint: PM me).

it's a 6-bed dorm (finding individual rooms for reasonable prices is really hard in london and besides, you should've told me if you wanted a separate room)

.... uhh I PM'd you with my situation, but if everyone's gonna be staying overnight then I might take you up on that spare room even though I live not far away. Leaving early to catch a train would suck.

Just looked into train tickets while I was out and I can't get one for any cheaper than 230 quid ($366 for you US dudes but now that I think about it why would any US members even be reading this? Well fuck it, I've calculated it now and I don't want it to go to waste so yup - $366) and I'm really tempted but...sorry guys, I'm out. :(

Hope you all enjoy it and I expect to see lots of pictures!

are you sure? what about the nat express? megabus also do trains AND if you break your journey down into short singles it often works out a lot cheaper..

My school starts again on the 5th and I'm a natural born Londoner anyway, so I won't need the Hotel crap, a 1hr tube journey at most.

oh and get this - BOTH my parents are registered Blue Badge tour guides for London
Meaning?
I'd be happy to tag along and explain and pretend-tour guide for anybody who hasn't been down here before. I know most of the sights of London well.

So yeah, I'd like to come along please.

oh and to whom this is relevant: tell me roughly when you're arriving in london if you're coming by coach/train/plane/spacecraft so i can set a time and place to meet up

just going to make sure we're clear: once we go and eat we'll probably head to a pub/bar or something in the evening so bring ID if you're over 18 and if you're under then bad luck i guess

@ cookie - wouldn't the best idea, seeing as most are coming in through train, be to meet up at St. Pancras?
also having the most line interchanges on the Underground service makes it easy to travel from there to where the hell it is we're going.

That said, could you also finalize where or what specifically anybody wants to go to see? That way my dad can get tickets cheaply and quickly without hassle ready for us to just enter.

Had a quick look on National Express and it's £92 return by train.

Hmm, thanks for that sbc, I've always been retarded when it comes to trains. Don't write me off just yet then - I only wish I knew I could get there for 92 before I went on a shopping spree yesterday. >_>

edit: out, sorry guys, I honestly did try. gutted.

The best place to meet up as I've said would be St. Pancras, due to it's largest range of intrastrucure connections in London.

I would like to assume everyone will be here before lunch (if not, you'd better reschedule or at least have the phone number of someone else who is coming), and if everyone gets here early enough we could probably have collective lunch somewhere.

also, regarding plans for said lunch and dinner, I'm an unemployed teenager, and therefore have no money, and because I'm getting free tickets for everybody to ride the London Eye, can I expect some people to at least help pay for me?

If you're going to travel by public transport, buy an off-peak zones 1-4 travelcard. Costs £6.30 and you can take bus, trams, overground rail and the tube between zones 1-4 (you won't need anymore unless you're going into the suburbs) from 9.30 am onwards.

if king's cross is inconvenient or whatever then meet us at south kensington station at ~11:30 which is where we're having lunch

it is kinda rude to expect something in return for tickets, i personally wouldn't mind, but it will probably feel awkward for people =(

also, if you're coming, post again here so i know who to expect etc. i've never met any of you bar mcgraw so i need to know who to look out for

and as jerkish as this might sound, if you're an unknown in this community i would recommend you don't come; there are several people who have responded in this thread whom are pretty new and all i'm saying is that it'll be awkward if you don't actually know a fair few people there (like if even only one person knows who you are then it's gonna be kinda hard talking to everyone else)

screw it, I'm coming anyway, I've got nothing better to do. Plus it'll be a good chance to get to know people otherwise.
I'll be going morning shopping with McGraw anyway so yeah.
