Smogon Simple Questions Thread

hello there!
Gen 9 has just been revealed yesterday, and that begs the question:
how come we don't have any Gen 8 avatar options in Showdown yet? I get it that there's some people that hate Gen 8 for numerous reasons (which I don't agree with but respect), but there have to be other people except me who liked it, and not to mention it's been almost 3 years since Sword / Shield came out - and with Gen 8 now pretty much officially getting "closed", I think it's very weird we don't even have avatars for a single Gen 8 character.
If needed, I could try making some myself, but I just think it's weird it hasn't been done yet.

Hey Fifty Shades of Rez, Brumirage worked on making them already, you can see her work here: https://www.smogon.com/forums/threa...er-avatars-for-everyone.3672829/#post-8648023). The gen8 avatars idea has been approved, but the avatars still need to be reviewed by Zarel and are not uploaded yet (you can find more information in the thread above).
 
So, i applied to the OU discord a few days ago. I follow the instructions given and was curious if anyone would be getting to it soon. I know it said not to message staff but Im weirdly anxious about "waiting in limbo" type situations and figured a post here would be a good compromise.

Is there somewhere for me to ask questions about team-building without having a full team prepared? Like if I just want to ask about the pros and cons of two similar Pokémon, or about three-type cores, or something like that?

this is a really good question, and one that i had myself a few months ago. unfortunate no one else got around to answering it

here's a direct link to a part of the usage stats' github code that generates large parts of that data. a lot of the "metagame" statistics generated here are based off pokemon's base stats, items, and other general demographics like abilities or specific moves found on the team (for example, finding choice band would decrease the 'stalliness' of the team while finding the move will-o-wisp, any recovery moves, or regenerator would increase it).

personal note: i don't think that this stalliness metric is really a strong indicator of metagames as a whole at all, because it doesn't take into account certain nuances of individual mons' sets or team structures: for example, if i have a dual suicide lead HO with toxic spikes on one mon and spikes on another, the stalliness would increase? a scarf magnezone + dragon dance mega altaria stall team would find itself tilting away from stall? while it can serve as a generally ok metric if you're looking to compare different entire metagames, it's nowhere near optimal and fails to account for more complex aspects that might dictate teams besides simply searching for specific moves or items used on a team.

worth noting that the code i linked above was last edited >4 years ago now, not sure if a different metric is currently being used but i assume not because i couldn't find anything else

Lasty, you can also check the Smogdex analyses here: https://www.smogon.com/dex/ss/pokemon/ A lot of Pokemon have a detailled analysis for various tiers and this could give a more complete answer.

1. Where i can find a list about commands for Pokémon Showdown? For example, commands like "/hidereplay" to hide replays, "/avatar" to choose hidden avatars, or "/challenge gen8ou @@@ !Dynamax Clause" to configure the clausules (in this case de Dynamax clause in OU). I wanna know more commands which could be useful

2. Is there an updated diccionary about terms in the metagame? Terms like cleric, revenge killer, late game, setup fodder, check, endgame sweeper, etc.

How do ladder points work? Ik that you lose points if you're on the ladder and you don't battle or smth, but I'm not sure how exactly that works.
 
Hello! so im really new to competitive pokemon and wanted to get into SS DOU. I found really good resources on the SS DOU forums, in particular NotIPrimRose's "SS DOU Teambuilding Checklists/Frameworks". But is there anything that explains more basic team comps? like balanced, offensive, and or bulkie type teams? i see alot of those types of teams on the bazaar and sample team forums but nothing on the frameworks of those teams for the format.
 
Hello, been a few years since I last played Smogon Formats much (actually made a new account because I couldn't remember my old password). I was wanting to get back into it, ideally I wanted to play some of the weird formats. I remember a while back there was an other Metagame that was level 1 Pokemon Only. I had a pretty good time with it, and was trying to remember what it was called. I looked through multiple Pokemon Showdown servers such as rom.psim.us, as well as the Other Metagame section of these forms, can't find it. What is it called? I was interested in it because the mons that could work were quite interesting and games were very quick and aggressive.

Also out of curiosity, what is the main criteria when deciding if an older generation receives a new tier as a ladder? I noticed Gen 1 NU is currently in Alpha, so I take it its a recent addition. I'd assume the main criteria is interest, but is there a different or additional requirement for such a thing?
 
suggestion: add a way to automatically set your status (currently set by /status <text>) to a default message. it could be something like /defaultstatus or /status <text>, default.

Hi! These kind of suggestions are better answered on the Pokemon Showdown suggestion subforum. This one in particular has already been approved, although not programmed.
 
i recently put images on the signature and i noticed that if they are too big or something things wont show up correctly so my suggestion would be a preview so we can see if things will show up right before saving it. at the moment you can only save it and the only way to see if it worked properly or not is to go check one of your posts somewhere, notice it didnt work as expected then go back to signature try again etc etc it just takes too much time and its annoying

Seeing as it's a default XenForo feature, prob not gonna be implemented for something this minor.
