Super Smash Bros 4 (Spoilers ITT)

doesn't seem unlikely imo. since lost worlds was announced for only nintendo systems, you can tell that the bond between sega and nintendo is strong - i wouldn't be surprised if nintendo ended up buying out sega, honestly.

plus it would be good promotion for lost worlds. would be interesting if ssb4 sonic could run up walls like lost worlds sonic can.

[also the sonic soundtrack is really excellent and those amazing songs being in there = <33333
i'd love the crush 40 version of 'with me' to be in there but it seems a little unlikely. maybe an instrumental of 'reach for the stars'?]

I'm really just banking on a Tails addition. That's all I need from the Sonic universe.

As per a deal with Nintendo, Sonic is going to be on Nintendo consoles only for his next 3 games (Lost Worlds, Olympics, unannounced third game, hopefully bringing back the Hedgehog Engine). Insofar as soundtrack, Crush 40 songs would probably be the best, partially because the lead songwriter/composer happens to work for Sega, but mainly because they have a more hardcore style than most other VG songs. Personally I'd love to see All Hail Shadow (provided he is playable), Knight of the Wind, and maybe Sonic Youth.

City Escape would also be cool as a stage/music combo.

Crush40 is as hardcore as Shannon Tweed.

I mean c'mon, we don't have Marble Zone, Chemical Plant, Hydrocity, Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery, or any Robotnik theme. Brawl already had an obnoxious overemphasis on new sonic games just like Generations, did we really need a reminder that Sonic 2006 exists in a series with such a pedigree as Smash Bros? And why am I even putting so much thought into this as if we are even going to get Sonic again?

robotnik has different themes? the only themes i remember are the ones where you fight him at the end of act 3. i've never felt them as particularly great or iconic, either, but maybe that's just me.

i also don't get why hydrocity is especially huge. it's seen in many of the older titles, but green hill/chemical plant [was even in generations], mushroom hill, marble zone [aka zone of nightmares] and possibly flying battery due to its more iconic/late-game status, but... hydrocity? eh.

sonic 06 also had a great soundtrack despite crappy gameplay. i would not object to something like the solaris phase 2 theme being in the game at all just because of how awesome that theme was. that said, i do agree that some more attention to the retro games should be given.

Robotnik has a different theme in the first three games. I'd go with the 2nd one but the 3rd is solid.

Hydrocity (Act 2 in particular) is a good theme. What other reason would there be to include it? But it's nothing next to Marble Zone. Also shit, I forgot Ice Cap Zone.

As for Flying Battery...

His World is typical rap orchestra, overblown and meaningless. Though compared to some other modern Sonic it's practically Beethoven.

oh yeah i forgot about e.g.g.m.a.n. i never played a game where that song was featured, so it's probably why.

eggman being in story mode, though... i guess i can see it, but i wouldn't think that they'd use third-party bosses. did they do that in ssbb?
[i'm aware that most of them were made for ssbb but there were some exceptions, like rayquaza]

So lets do some Mega Man Music Speculation. I'm more familiar with the X series, so I had to play a few Top 10 lists from a bunch of people and hunt the clips down.

Flash Man (Mega Man 2)

Spark Man (Mega Man 3)

Crash Man (Mega Man 2)

Air Man (Mega Man 2) with major props if they can somehow Medley in "I can't defeat Air Man" lol.

Tengu Man (Mega Man 8)

Galaxy Man (Mega Man 9)

Pharoah Man (Mega Man 4)

Wave Man (Mega Man 5)

Should be a decent start. And yeah, I like the X music series too, but this isn't X so I can't hope quite as much.

Double post, but I think a five day gap between posts is acceptable.

A new article has surfaced. Apparently, Sakuri thought that the series couldn't evolve much more as is and set on making a handheld version to change that, switching to make the game both on the WiiU and 3DS due to hardware limitations.

Personally, I don't really know how Smash could evolve from Brawl. All I really want from Smash 4 is Brawl with the problems fixed and the already existing good stuff made better.

Btw, is anyone up for making hypothetical movesets for possible newcomers?

Brawl removed a ton of depth 64 and Melee had.

A nice way to make the series evolve is to, well, add it back in.

I got tired of Brawl after like a year because the game is so damn shallow. More than 10 years of playing and Melee still doesn't get old.

I think Sakurai just doesn't see the potential for evolution in smash because he wants to design a game that is so casual friendly that it's shallower than a kiddy pool to allow that. He's so blinded by this that he doesn't understand that he can have a "deep end" as well so people have a reason to play the game after like a year or two.

i'm mixed. brawl definitely catered to casuals, and even sakurai acknowledges that he screwed up. at the same time, though, the learning curve for melee was pretty massive; and you've gotta consider the fact that casuals make up a great deal of the prospective business, and their opinions mean a lot to the slowing wii u console in particular - smash bros is a console seller, and if the people don't like it, they will let their friends know. that's so important for the wii u in particular this time around. it needs to keep its head above the water to stay in the game. that said, he did say quite clearly that he would raise the bar, and we'll hope that he's right - maybe i'll really be able to get into it this time, hehe.

More complicated mechanics doesn't equate to depth. Are Chess and Go shallow games? Not to say Brawl has perfect mechanics but I prefer it to Melee simply on the basis that it's a similarly good game without the requirement of being a technical wizard with the controller.

If Smash 4 strikes the proper balance between the two games, I think that'd be make everyone happy. I extend that to single-player as well: the expansiveness of SSE but with the charm of franchise-related environments and enemies like Melee's Adventure Mode. I can deal with Tabuu as the unique final boss but the whole generic-backdrops-with-arbitrarily-shaped-purple-blob-enemies that is the entire journey to him is exceptionally lame.

I liked both games mechanics... Brawl was a lot "floatier" and slower, but they are both great. Melee was a little too technical I think in some respects, some of the crazy stuff people pulled off most normal people could probably never even comprehend. I *just* about managed to figure out wave dashing, but I was unreliable at it at best lol...

Also: I totally couldn't find this thread... So thanks for bumping it so I saw it :D

Even though I played the ever-loving shit out of Melee back in the day, I really didn't have any issues with Brawl's mechanics aside from tripping. Melee games tended to descend in a clusterfuck, so slowing things down a bit so you could keep up with the action wasn't a bad move. That being said, Melee's speed does have a certain grab to it, so I'm glad Smash 4 is trying to keep a balance between the two.

In other news, I really fucking want a Rhythm Heaven stage. Maybe something along the lines of the WarioWare stage in Brawl where you can hit the attack button in time with the music to get bonuses, but something tells me that'll be too gimmicky.

It's not like you have to be technical to play Melee casually. Brawl and Melee are equivalent in difficulty on a casual level.

I think this is something people tend to forget.

Yeah I wasn't talking casually. Hardcore technical mechanics ensure only hardcore technical masters can compete competitively. I don't like fighting the game to get it to do what I want. If I'm going to lose I want it to be because my opponent out-thought and out-played me, not because I couldn't execute arbitrary, intentionally difficult button combinations and control stick movements.

As far as set Speculation, MegaMan seems like a tough nut to crack, even with the vid.

Ground Attacks:
Neutral A: Mega Buster
Forward A: Crash Bomber
Smash A: Charge Beam
Up A: Mega Uppercut
Up Smash: Spark Shock
Down A: ? (Probably a Samus-like immediate-range explosive) or Sliding Kick (Mega Buster is repeated, so could Sliding Kick
Down Smash: Flame Blast
Dash A: Sliding Kick

Throw: Super Arm Grip, then 4 directional throw, like Donkey Kong.

Aerials:
Neutral A: Mega Buster
Forward A: Flame Sword
Back A: Slash Claw
Up A: Tornado Shot (in vid)
Down A: Hard Knuckle

B: Metal Blade
Forward B: Top Spin
Up B: Rush Spring
Down B: Leaf Shield (MegaMan used this on the ground and in the air, so it's probably a B move, and Down B seems most likely for a defensive move)

Don't know as much of WFT movelist. I could probably take a crack at Villager.
