Pet Mod SylveMons (Discussion Phase)

Another tournament, another big ol' post!

Results:
Tournament #1 - Single Elimination:
1. CreeperDNA (literally the first time he played SylveMons)
2. Yoshiblaze (Carried by Zekrom, lost immediately after not using Zekrom for courtesy)
3. AquaticPanic
3. Gravity Monkey

Tournament #2 (Tao Trio banned) - Round Robin:
1. Yoshiblaze, AquaticPanic, Gravity Monkey tied
2. BatterBotto

So, what did we learn? Well....

Suspect Results:
Just like last time, we had one expected ban and one unexpected ban. Let's start with the expected one.

Suicune:
Access to Rinse Off - BAN (2-0-2 vote): Why did we think this was a good idea? Suicne with reliable recovery just sits there and eats hits and heals it off without suffering the penalty of relying on Sleep Talk to do damage, leaving room for Ice Beam to not get walled by Grass-types. Though, this ban is prone to getting retested because....

Stalwart + Calm Mind (applies to Raikou as well) - INCOMPATIBLE (2-0-2 vote): Considering how bulky Suicune is, if you hit it two or three times as it Calm Minds up, which it will because it's super bulky as I mentioned, then that's gg, as it now stupidly fast, allowing it to heal up or kill things before the opponent could even attempt to kill it, leading to a very hard to win situation unless you have an ultra fast physical Electric or Grass-type. So, Suicune can keep Stalwart, but Calm Mind can no longer be used with it, so instead of a super bulky ultra fast thing, you either get a super fast but weak thing or a super bulky but slow thing.

There was also the unexpected one that we probably should've seen coming, but

Tao Trio - CHANGES REVERSED (3-0-1 vote): Yeah, we saw the writing on the wall and after some backlash, even Rev (the one who submitted this change) we decided this was best for business. These monsters still have the stats to murder everything, their new typings were still really good, and they still had Bolt Strike and Blue Flare which are stupidly strong. What this also means is that Reshiram & Zekrom are rebanned to Ubers and Kyurem-Black is good again.

Oh yeah, we got, like, no data on Obstinacy, so...

Usage Stats:
Coming Soon

Some Other Tier Stuff
Check back in a bit and I'm put a bunch of SylveMons LC sets here because I want people to play SylveMons LC with me gosh dang it.

Teambats - They Exist!:
I won't go too in-depth now, but check out the PU Teambats thread and trust me, you'll want to use the #matchmaking_and_teambats channel for that second function.

A few little updates:

The following meta-changing components have been coded: Blue Herb, Reverse Core, Surge Surfer (fixed a bug that made it active after terrain ended), Seed Bomb

(Smaller things that have also been coded: Disperal, Swampland, Ion Absorb)

Also, on Monday, the 3rd session of roomtours will take place at somewhere between 4-6 PM EST on Dragon Heaven! The suspect taking place is Perseverance Buzzwole.

Alright, more tournaments were done, so that means bug post. I don't have the energy to be entirely coherent, but let's get into this.

Concerning suspects, we found Perseverance Buzzwole to be pretty broken and is very close to being banned but we (mostly me) felt like we didn't have enough info, so we (mostly me) held off on removing Perseverance from Buzzwole. For now.

Another thing we found is that Regice and Articuno are stupidly good. With Snow Warning, Hail's defense boost, Recrystalize, Reverse Core, AND Aurora Veil, these things do not die. So, the solutions we are currently considering are either banning Aurora Veil as a whole or removing Aurora Veil from Regice and Articuno (AP and I liked the latter option more).

Oh yeah, we found that Raichu-Alola is really really good. Stay tuned.

Another way to indirectly nerf regice and articuno is to make reverse core knockable. Once it's gone, they become shit again

A couple updates prior to the Sylvemons Open.

With the limited time we have, some quickbans have to be issued to hopefully keep everything as balanced as possible. So the following Pokemon are quickbanned for the Open only: Raichu-Alola, Regice, Articuno.

The following ban is also probably permanent: Perseverance Buzzwole

Also, with distribution being nearly complete, we'll need help finishing up. It appears that the only thing that need to be coded is distribution related to type changes (i.e. Moonblast to the Pixies), so help with that will be greatly appreciated.

I know that this is going to be only Uber relevant, but now that Lugia becomes a Water/Dragon, Palkia feels even more redundant and less viable. Sure, it got Infuriation which raise its Special Attack when hit, but Dialga also have it and is generally bulkier and better defensive type in comparison, as well as being able to take neutral hit from both Fairy-type and Dragon-type. Prove me otherwise.

Also Lugia's typing was actively praised for its useful defensive properties. "Buff" my ass.

Not to mention, Lugia sleeps at the bottom of the ocean because it would be too destructive otherwise. Similar to Machoke lacking the Steel-type because its metal belt serves to restrain its power, or Type-Null being the same with its metal helmet, Lugia lacks the Water-type normally because it restrains its power with the entire ocean.

Sample Sets
With the opening of Sylvemons on the Grand Slam, and the Sample Teams being somewhat outdated, I think it'd be useful posting a few sample sets. So, with the help of Yoshiblaze, we came up with some:

Not sure how good these sets are, but here goes:

blaziken.gif

Blaziken @ Agony Boots
Ability: Sole Caliber
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Blaze Kick / Flare Blitz
- High Jump Kick
- Stone Edge
- Swords Dance

Base Blaziken is no longer banned but it gets Sole Caliber in place of Speed Boost. Blaze Kick becomes a 102 BP move which is much more spammable than Flare Blitz, which is still stronger with perfect accuracy but has recoil. High Jump Kick becomes even more powerful. Stone Edge provides it with perfect coverage, and Swords Dance is Swords Dance. Agony Boots give it 1.33x Speed with the Torment effect, which is fine for Blaziken since it's going to force switches anyway. Set up sun and have even more fun with our favorite fried chicken.

cloyster.gif

Cloyster @ Focus Sash / White Herb
Ability: Skill Link
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Shell Smash
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Blast
- Bubble Beam

Cloyster still does what it normally does, but now Bubble Beam takes advantage of Skill Link and provides Cloyster with a multihit Water STAB (albeit special rather than physical). Ice/Water/Rock provides great neutral coverage, missing out only on Water/Fighting and Water/Steel types. Shell Smash doubles both Attack and Special Attack, so its attacks still hit hard even without full investment. This allows Cloyster to be a unique mixed Shell Smash sweeper. It would like rain to boost Bubble Beam further but whatever you do, keep Cloyster away from special attacks.

steelix-mega.gif

Steelix @ Steelixite
Ability: Sturdy --> Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Impish / Relaxed Nature
- Shield Slam
- Earthquake
- Recrystalize
- Stealth Rock / Stone Edge

Mega Steelix has gotten some big buffs here. Recrystalize provides it with the reliable recovery it always wanted. It got Bulletproof which protects it from things like Focus Blast, Fire Blast, Flame Bullet, and more. Shield Slam is a new Steel STAB that hits off its base 230 Defense stat, giving Mega Steelix a stronger attack than Heavy Slam.

0 Atk Steelix-Mega Heavy Slam (120 BP) vs. 244 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 207-244 (29.4 - 34.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
56+ Def Steelix-Mega Shield Slam (80 BP) vs. 244 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Chansey: 271-319 (38.6 - 45.4%) -- 14.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Disclaimer: These calcs aren't to show whether Mega Steelix can beat Chansey with Shield Slam, it's just to show the difference in damage between the two moves, coming from the standard tank set.

Steelix @ Steelixite
Ability: Sturdy --> Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Impish / Relaxed Nature
- Shield Slam
- Earthquake
- Recrystalize
- Stealth Rock
While teambuilding for the open I believe I've found a better optimized EV spread for Steelix:
steelix-mega.gif

Steelix @ Steelixite
Ability: Sturdy --> Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Def / 152 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Sassy Nature
- Shield Slam
- Earthquake
- Recrystalize
- Stealth Rock

This EV spread allows Steelix to dodge the 2HKO from Heatran's Incinerate, virtually walling any Heatran without Magma Storm or Lava Plume (not sure how common that is, but I think it's more of a benchmark than whatever the 200 EVs do). Loses some defense in the process but it's still insanely high so it's ok. The generally higher special bulk also comes in handy against a lot of the things Steelix wants to come in on, as most bullet-moves are specially based.

Also here's another set:
guzzlord.gif

Guzzlord @ Assault Vest
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 156 SpD / 100 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Dragon Tail
- Heavy Slam
Physical attacker that comfortably takes resisted special hits while also being immune to burn. 100 speed creeps Blissey and allows it to 2HKO with Heavy Slam before Blissey can possibly 2HKO with Dazzling Gleam (if not carrying Gleam, Guzzlord gives 0 fucks. If Blissey isn't that popular drop down speed to only 60 EVs in order to creep base 50s like Chansey). Probably still ass but I love Guzzlord!

sawsbuck.gif

Sawsbuck-Spring @ Anguish Bandana
Ability: Surge Surfer
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Fairy Charge
- Horn Leech / Wild Charge / Earthquake
- Horn Leech / Wild Charge / Earthquake

Sawsbuck-Spring got Surge Surfer, which doubles Speed under any terrain now, allowing it to outspeed lots and lots of Pokemon when a terrain is active. Unlike Hawlucha, Sawsbuck-Spring is grounded so it can benefit from the terrain's other effects as well. While it may seem like a budget Tapu Bulu, and it is weaker in most respects, Tapu Bulu is much slower, even outside of terrain, and Tapu Bulu generally only likes the Grassy Terrain it sets. Sawsbuck-Spring can utilize Grassy, Misty, and Electric Terrain with somewhat varying effectiveness. Swords Dance boosts its Attack to offensive levels, and it's pretty much necessary since base 100 Atk just isn't enough to hurt. Fairy Charge is a powerful Fairy STAB that is boosted by Misty Terrain's new 1.5x Fairy-type buff. Horn Leech provides a Grass STAB with some recovery and is boosted by Grassy Terrain. Unlike Tapu Bulu, whose Grassy Surge would render its own Earthquake unnecessary, Sawsbuck-Spring can run Earthquake in other terrains, granting wide coverage with Fairy Charge. Wild Charge is boosted by Electric Terrain and can hit Flying-types hard, especially Steel/Flying ones like Celesteela which can otherwise take Stone Edges without too much worry. I'm sure this set isn't optimal, it's just an idea I had.

Also, Hawlucha still does what it does best too, with the addition of Slipstream providing a neat STAB pivoting move that can do huge damage under Tailwind. And Raichu-Alola...is now a monster who can abuse Surge Surfer, especially with Electric and Psychic Terrains.

Edit: Forgot that Hawlucha doesn’t usually want to switch out at all due to the seed and Unburden activating only once. But Sawsbuck-Spring can switch in multiple times since it isn’t dependent on a consumable item or an ability that is dependent an item being consumed.
