to be fair, 35m seems ridiculous but look at the context - club that needs, as a scouse supporting friend of mine said, 'some fire and aggression' (with Carroll the ex-girlfriend-beater and bitey Suarez I think they're sorted) - needed a striker after the departure of Torres, and whilst Carroll is young and relatively unproven what with this being his first full season in the Prem and all he'll also command a lower wage fee. Look at what Torres is being paid at Chelsea - reported to be in the region of 175k a week, and he's crocked half the fucking time anyway. From what I know of Dalglish, he's done alright in the transfer market, albeit 13 years ago.. and then there's the fact this is (I believe) the last transfer window before FIFA fair play finance rules kick in. If you've got money, spend it.. Surprised Charlie Adam didn't make it out, it looked pretty certain he was going this afternoon (and lol tottenham bidding for him last minute, gj)

pss I'd have lold so fucking hard if Newcastle had signed Bothroyd

edit: WHY THE FUCK DID ANYONE SIGN DIOUF WHY DO PEOPLE STILL WANT TO SIGN DIOUF HE'S GENUINELY AWFUL

Suárez could provide the assists for Kuyt and Carroll to score. And score some himself from free kicks or getting assists from Gerrard, Mereiles, Carroll and Kuyt. And Suárez has a good long-distance shot as well.

Torres was overrated anyways, Suárez+Carroll>Torres. Liverpool after the transfer window will be better than before.

I think this team looks good.

On an Ajax community I am a member of, some girl made this awesome picture of Ajax chairman Rik van den Boog. I uploaded it on Imageshack.

Picture spoilered, it looks violent, it is just stupid but great Paint fun.

No replacement for Luis Suárez. Ajax sucks now. We are oficially subtopper and no longer a topclub.

Now we need to do with this subtop team.

I kind of understand the reasoning behind chelsea buying torres, but to be honest it creates an awkward formation, as Torres is a true center striker, so where does that leave drogba/anelka? Malouda and Kalou? Torres is young though, and thats excellent.
They really should have signed a center mid to sub in for lampard/whoever when theyre injured (what happened to getting modric from tottenham?), and wtf picking up a defender they don't need. They have like so many good defenders that I can't even count them. Time they signed a new manager, word.

pretty wild deadline day, all the clubs raging to spend before uefa fair play stuff goes in

and here i was thinking darren bent would be the mad deal of the window, then carroll for 35 mil pops up....wow

oh and i didnt think mike ashley's popularity could drop lower, but looks like forcing carroll out could actually do that

it absolutely disgusts me how andy carroll actually handed in the transfer request. i cant believe him..all the nufc fans stick beside him and forget his life off the pitch [just like most do with joey barton...] and he signs a 5 year contract, pledges his loyalty to the club, the club captain acts as his caregiver, then during the last few days he decide to leave. i know carroll is worth at least $20 mil currently, and while $35 mil is a lot, and with new owners who have money to spend, plus the ridiculous sale of torres [who in my opinion is worse than carroll], i feel the bid made sense. especially since carroll has actually played in the premier league, unlike saurez and friends...

anyway, i think that newcastle really only need 1 striker as they can play 4-5-1 with best/ameobi up front with barton/tiote/nolan/guitterez/arfa [ireland for now i guess] in the midfield. i dont really understand the signing of ireland, but a 4-5-1 formation seems like the best option, especially since we have a really really strong midfield and only 3-4 strikers. i am also glad to see routledge getting loaned out, and while he isnt quite premier league material yet [he has the pace and dribbling skills, but lacks foresight especially when crossing], i do not really think nufc should sell him as he will certainly be a very valuable player in 2-3 years. anyway, i think best will be able to fill carroll's role until the end of the season and possibly into the future. once our back four actually play their best every match and stop being so inconsistent [at least not as inconsistent as the horrible bramble/moore era] i think we really have a shot at europe in <2 years..

ps. darren bent sucks.
pss. i hope carroll flops, worse than shevchenko and albert luque put together.

Carroll is saying he was forced to by the Newcastle hierarchy; knowing what I do of Ashley and his various idiocies I wouldn't be surprised if that was true.
And, err, Torres worse than Carroll? What?

he's not worth 35 million, noone is seriously claiming that he is. the price was massively inflated by Liverpool's evident desperation after Torres' planned departure (and Torres had a 50m buy-out clause in his contract iirc), the fact it's the last day of the transfer window, Newcastle's outward unwillingness to sell, and his form this season.

Going by form this season, you'd get shite fucking all for Rooney, he's been absolutely awful.

Nobody said Torres was worth 50 Million, he was just saying that Rooney has done more this season than Torres, and in half as many matches I might add. People seem to misunderstand the role that Rooney plays at the moment and assume that if he isn't scoring goals then he's not playing well. That's really not the case.

Bit stupid of them to only have Bas Dost as their one card. I don't think they seriously continued to pursuit Mertens.

On the other hand, even though we could have used a striker, I'm glad we actually did not overpay for Dost. He might be a decent player, but not worth the 7 million Heerenveen kept asking.

I just hope De Boer will have the balls to use Geoffrey Castillion soon, this is the perfect time for him to throw him on the pitch. Siem isn't the ideal striker either, so time to give the youth some experience.

he's a striker, he will be evaluated on how many goals he scores

Quote from the local paper.

Carroll said: “I was in talks about a new contract and talking to the gaffer about that.

“He told me that they are now not going to give me a contract. That was as soon as the offer of £30m came in.

“So I asked why (I wasn’t getting a new contract) and he said his hands were tied.

“He said it wasn’t up to him. Then a £35m bid got accepted.

“And then I was allowed to talk to Liverpool. The owner then made it clear to me that I was not wanted at the club.

“Saying that his own helicopter is waiting for me to go down to talk to them.

“So being shown I’m not wanted I said OK I will talk to them. Then suddenly the bid was rejected.

“And then Derek asked me to hand in a transfer request. So I was pushed into a corner and had no choice.

“I wasn’t wanted by them and they made it clear they wanted the money.

“Then I flew down in his (Ashley’s) helicopter. I didn’t want to leave.

“I’m gutted that I wasn’t wanted at my home team after everything I’ve done and progress I’ve made.

“I didn’t want to leave at all. Make sure they know I didn’t want to leave.

“The players, staff and fans were fantastic.”

Fucking Ashley.

Gutted, Lee. I was moderately encouraged to read 'Newcastle promise to re-invest all 35m' - til I realised it was Pardew saying that, not Ashley. I honestly pity your club being owned by such a turd - first Hughton, now this?

£35million is a ridiculous sum of money for a player like Andy Carroll. I do rate him, but it is outrageous. Disregarding contracts and their length, I cannot understand how a player like Suárez (who scored 49 goals in 48 games last season) is worth over £10million less than someone who's played at the top level for half a season. Obviously, Newcastle, or more to the point, Mike Ashley knew that Liverpool would want to bring in two strikers when they're losing Torres and have new owners who have to impress the fans. He's tried to milk Liverpool and succeeded (not that I care xD). Maybe I'm just comparing this signing to the likes of Rooney, Ferdinand, Berbatov, Torres (to Liverpool), Drogba, Essien etc etc. These players stand above most others in terms of quality, or in Rooney's case it was a bit of a gamble on potential. I personally think it was way too much to spend on Andy Carroll at this moment in time. I though Spurs £23million offer was too much.

Also, Chelsea paying £50million for a crock... If he does stay fit, we might see the best ever of Torres. But if not, which I think is more likely, it's a waste of money. Both of these signings were made under too much pressure and for the risk involved, it's way too much money.

I think the Torres signing is much more riskier than the Carroll one, since one more injury like the one in the World Cup for the Spaniard and that could be it for him... remember Michael Owen? Yeah.

Toon didn't want to lose Carroll,(akuchi that source abuot being pushed out - it was in the Sunderland Herald... go figure) and the price is so high because it was the last day of the window. If they went in for him earlier in the period, a) they wouldn't have sold (see spurs) and b) it wouldn't have been anywhere near that price (again, see spurs, I reckon £20m is about right).

Honestly, I don't know where I stand on the Carroll issue. He's given a press release and texted the guy who runs the fanclub to say he didn't want to go - but that might just be covering his own arse with the geordies (understandable). He himself admits a new contract was being discussed, and he only signed one in October, and that seems silly. So maybe it was Carroll. But then, fat Ashley isn't a particularly nice man, Pardew is basically his bitch, and I don't really believe a thing either of them say, either. So I don't know, except that the motivation was definitely money-based, which is sad. And Newcastle stand a much worse chance in the Prem without him (Ameobi? he was good on my FM2010 team..)

Regardless, it's sad. I don't know why (probably cos my boy is a geordie, and therefore bums/bummed him - that or the ponytail, which is always nice on a man) but though he's obviously a colossal prick I have a bit of a soft spot for Carroll. I like Liverpool though - Dalglish won my heart with that comment to the Sky News reporter - and I hope it works out for all involved.

edit: and as for Torres, I'm glad he's gone to Chelsea - I'm totally apathetic on the subject of Torres, and I really don't like Chelsea, so watching him, Anelka and Drogba bitch at each other about who starts will make me smile :3

pss Swansea VS Bristol City tonight aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

The source I've quoted is the Evening Chronicle (the local Newcastle newspaper). It's almost certainly reliable. The only question is whether Carroll is telling the truth but we all know Mike Ashley well enough to know that it all sounds about right. Honestly, this bit pisses me off so much - 'The owner [Ashley] then made it clear to me that I was not wanted at the club. Saying that his own helicopter is waiting for me to go down to talk to them.'

I can't blame Carroll...if I was being given the impression that I wasn't wanted then I'd be tempted to flick them off and go for the big money move too.

As for the money...eh...I don't have high hopes for it. I'm sure we'll see a fair chunk of it at the end of the season (not even Ashley is stupid enough to try anything funny at this point...he'd by lynched for sure) but I just don't trust our recent track record in the transfer market and can only see us ending up with another overated, overpriced player that will inevitably prove to be a waste of money.

And hilariously enough, the three strikers we have been linked most strongly with since last night have been Peter Crouch, Emile Heskey and Carlton Cole. Ugh.

(Ameobi? he was good on my FM2010 team..)

The relationship between Ameobi and the fans is a funny one. We all know he's utter shite but we'll argue vehemently if anybody else tries to tell us that. It's like when you're watching a very young relative playing football and he's clearly awful but you humor him and tell him he'll be the next Alan Shearer one day. There's been a strong feeling of 'he'll come good eventually!' for nearly 10 years now. Our only hope now is that that time has come and he can step up and fill Carroll's boots. He's a very poor finisher but his positioning is normally quite good.

The lack of a quality striker is worrying, but we can find solace in the fact that a fair share of our goals this season have came from the midfield anyway...Kevin Nolan has scored 10 goals this season and is the league's 4th top scorer - only Berbatov, Tevez and Carroll have scored more (and he was our top scorer last season...and was doing this for Bolton for years...can someone please, for the love of God, tell me why this man has no England caps?).

ps akuchi, i was in bristol on the weekend...i'd have been much more tempted to look you up if i knew you were a football fan!

I live in Manchester now! How did you find Bristol? I quite like Ameobi in fairness, purely based on his performances in FM2010. and his name. You should have enough about you to stay up, even if only because you're facing some really shite competition (Wigan, West Ham - oh god please let Wigan go down please please please please I'd lol so fucking hard).

eh ManU sure scored fast

the Devils and Villa are my two favourite teams so I dunno if thats a good thing or not

Subbing Suárez is hard, not something for youth. We really needed Dries Mertens. 7,5M Euro is cheap for such a great player.

Castillion is so overrated!

Dost is good, but a reserve player who costed Heerenveen 3M should be at max 4M, Heerenveen should've been happy with this. Now Bas Dost's career will be ruined. But it is awful that Heerenveen asks 7M if Ajax wants Dost, and Feyenoord has to pay only 4M for him.
