Lee summed it up perfectly and I definitely agree with him. Qatar and Russia is the best choice imo. I personally found Qatar's bid yesterday very convincing, they definitely deserve it and they are perfectly capable of hosting a world cup.
Sure, Qatar is perhaps
capable of hosting a World Cup. Should they be? No. Like The_Chaser pointed out, FIFA sent people to each bidder to evaluate them and the committee-submitted report marked Qatar as a high risk. Here are
some reasons why:
- Heat - The WC is held in summer. Qatar's temperature is incredibly harsh, up to 40 degrees Celsius (40C = 104F) during June-July and not dropping below 30. They have promised to make special air-conditioned stadiums, but how do they air-condition Qatar? The majority of time tourists will not be in stadiums, they will be melting instead. This also poses an obvious health risk. In fact, I would say the climate is actually the main factor.
- Infrastructure - Everything in Qatar needs to be upgraded, renovated, and refurbished. It is a small country with a low population who will have to cope with their population being doubled or tripled for a few weeks. Hotels that will die after the WC, stadiums that by the by will have no use after the tournament (you can say, oh, maybe other tournaments will host in Qatar in the future, but they don't need 12+ stadiums all with capacity of 40,000+, which is why they will be donating them to other countries. Yay for excess and waste). And the main thing -- TRANSPORT. Qatar has one good airport. These people aren't coming like raindrops in drizzle, they're going to be flooding in. Accessibility not so easy. It needs a huge boost to its accomodation and transport infrastructure to hope to handle all these people as they zip over Qatar.
- Qatar as a tourist destination - There are already talks of designated drinking areas, etc. And sure partying is not the point of the WC. But I question how Qatar will cope with these things. Just look at past World Cups -- they are chaotic. This is a month-long event as well, what is entertainment even like in Qatar?
I don't understand how you can say Qatar is the best choice when America and Australia (Australia has never hosted a WC either, mind) submitted a bid. I am going to ignore South Korea and Japan because they hosted so recently. Qatar needs an overhaul to be remotely ready for this tournament. How you can say Qatar is a better choice than four countries that have win out on Qatar in all of these aspects is beyond me. Take Australia, for instance. Has most of the stadiums it needs (needs to upgrade some), being a huge tourist destination has equipped it to easily handle the influx of people, has fantastic infrastructure, has a growing soccer culture (and the right to host in 2022 would be just the accelerator Australian soccer needs), it would be winter in 2022 so the climate would be mild...
And I don't even plan to be in Australia come 2022.
I wonder if Qatar's fountain of $$$ will still be there by 2022. I wish Qatar the best, I obviously don't want the cup to be bad, but I'm just in doubt (and, yes, bitter, because I think this is rubbish). I sure hope they put their money where their mouth is, because I hear a lot about 'potential' and 'opportunity' but in the face of four countries who have proven themselves to be fine hosts of sporting events (Sydney Olympics, anyone?), potential falls short.
I cannot deny the growth would be nice for Qatar (though their plans scream WASTE AND EXCESS to me), but this isn't just about Qatar. It's about the
World Cup, about fans and players worldwide who will be descending upon this tiny nation. I guess on the 'bright' side this Cup will be ... different.
FIFA talking about transparency is a joke anyway. I actually laughed out loud when that was said.
