to me the bottom line is, with four chances a real Stanley Cup contender is going to beat the Blackhawks one time regardless of who is in goal, and if they can't do so they probably aren't as good as they think they are. So why shake the confidence of the goalie you know you're going to want to carry you past Round 1? He's a former team captain and one of the highest paid goalies in the league, I think you've gotta dance with the girl you brought here, not matter how shaky he's been against Chicago. Not sure this one will pay off...
Being highest paid means dick all, just ask people who 'earn' their money like Stajan, Dipietro, Bouwmeester, Kotalik Lecavalier and Yashin (lol). I know I used 3 flames, I'm just using examples off the top of my head. That's such a poor judge of talent. Also Luongo was a make belief captain, as goalies can't fulfill a captain or assistant captains duty of bitching at the ref in mid ice, also the league doesn't allow it. He is a leader, I'll give you that, and I addressed that in an earlier post.
The best athletes can perform when it's needed, it's that simple. If someone is the fastest runner every race for 3 years and goes to the olympics only to be unable to run, you can probably guess what medal they aren't winning. It's the same for the cup.
Anyways, Schneider has proven to be a solid goaltender, even though he's a rookie. Time will tell if he can dance with the stars, but he has had a good year. After a few blowouts, there is absolutely no reason NOT to give the kid a chance. Niemi was a beast under pressure his rookie season, why not this kid? A good goalie will not have their confidence shaken by a few blowouts and a nod to the kid. Luongo is experienced enough that he SHOULD know his place and that is as a starter to a team that is a favorite to win the cup.
That said, you're right that a cup contender should shut the door on the hawks in 4 chances, even though their regular season record wasn't impressive against them and the hawks are actually a rival of theirs now that seems to have their number. Playing Luongo is the only logical choice in this game seven. For those of you not from western Canada, I'll inform you: this game means more than just a game 7. Obviously this is
their year, given the regular season, but last few years of post season and regular season vs chicago haven't exactly done things to help the relations. Every single canucks fan that I know (and there are A LOT in Calgary) HATES chicago, almost as much as they hate calgary. For those of us near ground zero, this is fucking intense. Talk about pressure, losing to someone that consistently embarrasses you (and maybe soon in what is perhaps the most embarrassing way) is NOT what the canucks fans had hoped for when dominating this season.
One thing I will point out is that the wings got the presidents trophy a few times and then fucked up in the first round. They publicly said that they were going to ease into playoffs by taking it easier on the player shifts and giving shitty players more ice time during the final stretch and as soon as they did that, they won the cup. Teams that are full throttle trying to win the presidents trophy can often burn out in the playoffs. Maybe some of this is creeping into Vancouver?
