It must be hard having a team you can't count on to win the second round, Synre. Our collective sympathies!
Fucking red wings, I think everyone but wings fans are sick of their constant betterness
Don't hate the player (in this case: Ken Holland and the Red Wings organization), hate the game (in this case: Hockey General Management at the NHL level).
Sharks/Wings should be a tough series for both teams. The coaches are familiar with each other and each team's players from past experiences.. look for Babcock and McLellan to have some coaching chess matches as they attempt to counter one another from game to game.
In terms of forwards, I'm biased and think Detroit has the better overall depth top to bottom but will concede that San Jose's blend of skill and size from their big guns is worrisome. Their top six is just as talented as Detroit's but larger which has the potential to cause issues.
If we get the Kronwall from the opening round to play against the Sharks, I think the d-core is better for the Wings, too. There's a ton of experience on that blueline and Nick Lidstrom is still the best in the game. That said, San Jose's defense isn't anything to scoff at. Sharks have some talented offensive players on their back end and their own human wrecking ball in Douglas Murray.
Overall, I'd say the skaters are pretty much a wash and neither team will be able to coast on talent alone.
The real defining point to this series, in my mind, is in goal. Yes, I'll say it: Niemi is terrible. OK, not terrible, but definitely no Pekka Rinne or Ryan Miller. I'll probably have to eat my words now that I've said this but I can't imagine Niemi stealing any games this series. He'll be serviceable, but also beatable. Meanwhile, Jimmy Howard isn't the next Martin Brodeur, either, but he did a pretty good job out-dueling Ilya Bryzgalov in round 1. A lot of playoff series are determined by who gets the better netminding and this Wings/Sharks series is no different. I think Detroit holds a decent edge here, one that could ultimately tip the scales should this go 6 or 7 (which I think it will). Jimmy Howard was inconsistent this regular season, but seemed very sharp against Phoenix. I can't necessarily say the same for Niemi, who got yanked in game 5 against an LA team without their star center. His numbers were good against Detroit last year and this year but that's the regular season. Detroit has a 7 game series to try to exploit his tendencies and capitalize on his bad rebounds. On the other hand, Jimmy Howard didn't fare too well against this year's Sharks team so that trend could continue in the postseason. If his regular season inconsistencies pop up again, it could be a quick exit. Definitely the most compelling and uncertain story of this round 2 battle will be in net.
Series hinges on whichever team wants it more and ends up getting the better goaltending. I think it'll be Detroit but San Jose has a different vibe this season.. Jumbo Joe with 2 game winners already, one of which in OT?
