The Everything NHL Thread

i thought it was hilarious because the wings players were even getting to him so the chanting then goal was just icing on the cake. whenever ellis was going to try to handle the puck the wings would attack him because of how bad he is doing it. almost had a few good chances out of hounding him like that.

ok double post....

What did you guys think of Sean Avery's antics against Brodeur yesterday and the NHL's quick action to make it illegal. I'm not sure if I agree that what he was doing was wrong in any way but it does seem kind of cheap and dirty. ESPN's story here: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs2008/news/story?id=3346729

And I found this funny thing on sportsillustrated as well (god I'm a loser).. it does look-a-like comparisons of hockey players to celebs:

Carl, we totally called the Flames comeback last night. It was all about that hit.

haha Carl

"It's almost an unwritten rule," Montreal rookie goalie Carey Price said. "It's like when you're a kid in the backseat that's going, 'I'm not touching you, I'm not touching you.' When I was about 7 or 8 years old, I would probably try and get in your bubble like that."

"If they have to change the rule because somebody wants to be unsportsmanlike and deface the game of hockey, I'm all for it," Stars goalie Marty Turco said. "Hopefully, guys understand the integrity of the sport.

"That's just something you don't do. It's kind of bush league. Hopefully it's the last we see of it."

lol goalie clique sticks together

seriously though fuck sean avery

As far as something intelligible to add, its good they didnt call a penalty against it I think since there is no rule against it, but on the same token it is pretty much the epitome of 'unsportsmanlike conduct.' There are lots of unsportsmanlike things hockey players tend to do in important hockey games so I'm not completely sure why they decided to single out this one, but I really really dislike how Sean Avery plays in general, and the Devils often bring out the worst in him, so I'm glad to see him get reeled in a little.

Man I'm glad he doesn't play for Detroit anymore.

He did nothing wrong but I agree with the rule change. It applied what we apply to competitive gaming really. If it's not outright banned, it's legal. Once we find a way to ban it in a concrete way, it can be banned.

And Canucks GM Dave Nonis got fired it seems. That was a bit of a shocker. Maybe we'll get Burke back from the Ducks?

Found it quite funny to see Avery's action, but agree it should be banned. Funny how one action can rewrite a rulebook.

Av's vs Wild another 3-2 in OT, that's 3 in a row, does that happen more often or? Looks quite rare to me.

On a fantasy note, found a post on hfboards.com about someone wanting to set up a keeper league, I mailed him and awaiting his reaction. Maybe one of you is interested to join aswell.

So a new keeper league is starting and it still needs a few more GMs to fill out the last few spots. We have our own website & forum to keep track of keeper rosters and to talk. Its a yahoo scoring system (G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP, GWG, W, GAA, SV%, SO) and its a H2H league.

Email pimpinainteasy-69@hotmail.com if you are interested and be sure to mention why you want to join the league and why you think you'd be a good GM.

p.s. lol @ his email addy, but it's too early too judge him on that. Curious to see what this keeper league might bring.

WESTERN CONFERENCE
Detroit
/Nashville - Obvious, Nashville just doesn't have the depth the wings do... I think last game when their key players were making mistakes and going to the box was turning point, they may have won, but I would say it is because of bad bounces because in general the Preds were playing poorly and I think it will cost them.
San Jose/Calgary - They just hit the hell out of San Jose, and I don't think San Jose can handle the physical play that Calgary brings, let me stress what I mean with physical play (Hacking, Slashing, Throat Cutting with skates, anything that should be a penalty)
Minnesota/Colorado - Hard to say, but I just have a feeling.
Anaheim/Dallas - J.S. Turco? Mr. I cant stop a puck vs. Mr. 3 shutouts in one series last year.

Detroit/Calgary - I think we proved last year that we handle Calgary well, eh Cujo? are you going to slash someone and get kicked out?
Minnesota/Dallas - Dallas is just on the money and I think they will work Backstrom, especially after a hard series vs. Colorado.

Detroit/Dallas - Detroit just has what it takes this year I think, they have good depth and scoring all the way through the lineup, and lets face it, I hate him but Hasek hasn't been bad at all.

EASTERN CONFERENCE
Montreal
/Boston - I don't think Boston can handle Montreal once their PP starts to click again. It hasn't been AS good as it was in the regular season, but when it clicks, they will feed the bruins.
Pittsburgh/Ottawa - What the hell happened to these clowns at the end of the season, letting the Pittsburgh Sidney Malkins work the shit out of them. Lets not forget Hossa's 3 points last game though, he is finally being a playoff producer for once!
Washington/Philadelphia - I hate Philly but they are just so dirty at playing and Ovechkin hasn't been doing enough for the Caps in the playoffs
New Jersey/New York - Jeremy Roenick Vs. Patrick Roy. I am sorry Sean Avery, I cant hear you, my stanley cup rings are making your girlfriend moan too loud.

Montreal/Philadelphia - Philly cant stick with Montreal as far as I am concerned. Price has been great and I don't think that Biron can handle all of the Montreal scorers.
Pittsburgh/New Jersey - New Jersey cannot score enough to beat out the Pens goal scorers. Don't get me wrong, Brodeur wont be Gerber out there and will most likely have much better defense in front of him, so the games will be closer, but I don't think the Devs have what it takes to put up enough to out score the Pens.

Montreal/Pittsburgh - They can match each other scoring, I think.

FINALS
Detroit
/Montreal 4-2 - I think it is Detroit's year, but what a hell of a match this finals series would be, two original six teams would be nice to see and I think that Detroit will hold out.

Maybe I am late on these predictions, I haven't gone back and read what I have missed since after fantasy season, but needless to say...thoughts, comments, anything along those lines.

EDIT: Also, If Anaheim happens to beat Dallas and then beat Minnesota, I think they might be able to edge the wings again. Especially after a Calgary series. So that kind of bothers me, because I hate Chris Pronger, what Scott Niedermayer did this season, Getzlaf and Kunitz and also I am not a fan of Giguere.

Brodeur wont be Gerber out there, so the games will be closer,
Obviously you're not watching the games. Gerber has been dominant in the series, but everyone else (sans Alfie) has been utter shit.

On a somewhat related note, I'm going to tomorrow's Sens game, hope the other fans have enough respect and decency to give the team a standing ovation after the game.

Gerber has been good, but I think that if the Devils beat the Rangers, like I think they will, Brodeur will be super hot and probably shut down a lot of the Penguins offense.

Also, now that I have made my predictions, I fully expect most of them to be proven wrong!

but everyone else (sans Alfie) has been utter shit.

On a somewhat related note, I'm going to tomorrow's Sens game, hope the other fans have enough respect and decency to give the team a standing ovation after the game.
Also, yeah, I am disappointed with Ottawa since the Emery thing, and when Alfredsson is out, they always score less. He is a big time part of the team though, so you can kind of expect that, but with Spezza and Heatley, Vermette, Stillman, you would expect that they would do something other than like a goal a game. But its cool that you are going. Can you get tickets to the draft as well? I'm not sure if they are open to everyone, but they are in Ottawa so....

Draft is 18+, unfortunately, and I only turn 18 in October.

I think the big issue with the team has been coaching, and that Murray has been less-than-stellar since returning to behind the bench. Various reasons make me say this, but I think the most important one came on Monday night.

Down 2-0, needing to win at home. Alfie is playing, surprisingly. This is the same arena where choruses of "Alfie! Alfie!" boomed through the rafters last year in the playoffs. Murray doesn't start his captain, so they fans had to wait until 5ish minutes in, when they saw Alfie on the ice.

Maybe it wouldn't have mattered, but I can tell you that the place would have absolutely erupted had they announced "Starting on the Right Wing, the Captain, Daniel Alfredsson!"

And even though this is likely the dire-hard fan in me, knowing what this team has the potential to do, I still think that a solid performance tonight, helped by Alfie and Fisher (both expected to play) could actually swing the series.

edit - About your missing Alfie comment, I think my uncle put it best when he said "Without Alfie in the line-up, it's like the team is missing that big brother they grew up with". It's true, he really does sort of 'watch over' the other players, even from the bench.

Sorry to have dissapointed you Stall, but I was right :(
Yeah, I know.

I'm just happy they they didn't go down without a fight. It was obvious that they really wanted to avoid the sweep at home, and they played their asses off last night. GO SENS GO!

edit - I've never seen this before, but right after shaking hands with the Pens, Alfie shook hands with the 4 officials. It was also fitting that chants of "Alfie" were chorusing through the building as soon as the game ended.

Yeah, as much as I hate the Sens (as a Sabres fan), I'm always had a deal of respect for Alfie. He's a great guy/player, and I hope he keeps playing for a long time.

As for last night... holy fucking Nashville Predators, Batman!

I thought I might as well post my predictions.

My brother, dad and I each pick two teams (east and west) to win the Stanley Cup every year. Last year, I picked the Stars and Islanders. They were both knocked out in the first round, so I got first pick this year.

I went with San Jose and Washington. San Jose came into the playoffs 9-0-1 in thier last ten iirc. Washington was also doing well just before the playoffs. I think I could of made a better decision though, but I wasn't allowed to look at the matchups.

Right now San Jose is 2-2, right? I know Washington is 1-3.

It looks like the Stars are making me sound like a dumbass in my predictions.

I picked the Ducks to easily win this, in 5, and go as far as winning a 2nd cup.

I'd say I want them to shake up to make me look like I knew what I was talking about but... fuck them. This whole Niedermayer/Selanne bullshit makes me hope they get a quick exit.

Go Ribeiro.

Brodeur is good but New Jersey lacks on the offensive side of things.

I should have done a little more research though. I would have probably gone with the Penguins. The main reason I picked Washington was because they were 9-0-1 coming into the playoffs.

That obviously did not carry over into the playoffs.

You've got to remember that the last games of the NHL season are all against division opponents so a good chunk of those wins came against teams in the mediocre southeast.

edit: carey price owned

So my Devils got eliminated :( I'd predicted such but I am still very disappointed, as even if they had to lose it would be infinitely better for them to lose to any team in the NHL other than the Rangers :( In addition to the rivalry I don't think I can put into words just how much I hate most of the players on the Rangers(and their fans), so I'm really hoping they get dumped quickly next round, although I kind of like their odds, especially if Boston squeaks through to create a pretty weak second round with the Rangers playing the winner of Philly/Washington. Kind of hoping that doesn't occur, partially because while I don't like the Habs I do like Carey Price, and partially because if the Caps somehow survive the Habs play the Rangers and I'm curious if Avery will do anything particularly retarded after Price backed up Broduer on the whole backward screening antic thing.

Also I'm going to miss Rick DiPietro on Versus this week, he might not play for a very good team but he's pretty entertaining at least :(

At least Washington is still alive and Detroit is one away from the second round ~_~

fucking .... Habs......

I will be swift and brutal in blaming Price if they lose the serie and Huet wins his.

my wild :(

sucks that they lost due to a washed up goalie somehow being awesome again even though the dominated possession for most of the series :(

looks like the pittsburgh malkins are winning the cup

Red Wings!!!!!!!!

That defense in the 3rd was extremely impressive and I love the way Osgood is playing right now. Calm, cool, and next to perfect. The Wings look like a team that can go a long way right now.. scoring coming from all the lines.. fucking Hudler on line 4 scoring a goal and with luck like Lidstrom's bounce goal the Wings will be tough to beat in a 7 game series. And is it just me or do the Red Wings always seem to run into a hot goalie for their first round playoff match?
