COL vs MIN
I know for having Theodore in my fantasy team that he's been playing great recently.

Niklas Backstrom last 10 put the Wild in the playoffs - when the playoff crunch began 10 games ago the west had a cluster fuck with Vancouver/Calgary/Colorado/Minnesota all within a couple of each other and duking it out at the bottom of the west playoff race, until goaltending solved most of those issues - Luongo/Vancouver choked and is out of the playoffs, Backstrom put up amazing numbers and is in the playoffs with a division title under his belt.

What Im saying is Theodore has been solid, but Backstrom pretty much outplayed everyone else in the Northwest to seal the deal at the top for the Wild.

To be perfectly honest, I think the Wild can take Colorado in a playoff series, but in the following round San Jose worked the Wild over in the regular season and I wouldn't feel good about that matchup if SJ beat Calgary. Id rather see Calgary's familiar faces rather than SJ as a Wild fan. Though, I think every Wild fan is breathing a sigh of relief that overtime games won't be decided by shootout anymore since we just couldn't do anything right in a shootout. I feel like Lemaire wouldn't let Wild players practice a shootout move and they all seemed to act like they had never been in that situation before. At least in the playoffs they finish off games the right way

EAST

BOS VS MTL
Habs have been far and away the best team in the final stretch, and have dominated Boston all season long. The team may have a lot of young players, but its not like Boston is full of playoff veterens, either. Habs in 6.

OTT vs PIT
Ottawa was able to rally around Alfie for the Toronto game, which was good to see, but there's not way they can win a playoff series without Alfie or Fisher. Crosby, Malkin, and company should have a field day with Ottawa. Pens in 5.

PHI vs WAS
Washington has been on fire of late, winning 7 in a row and 11 of 12 game in a push to make the playoffs. In the second season, though, I don't know if Ovechkin will be able to keep the whole team afloat, as he did for most of the year. Briere and co. will bank on their playoff experience, giving them that extra edge that will make the difference. Flyers in 7.

NYR vs NJ
Neither team stands out particularly well, so this one is a tough call. The Devils have Brodeur, though, so I'm going to go with his fantastic resume over Lundqvist's unproved playoff record. Devils in 6.

WEST

NAS vs DET
Detroit's record may be extremely overrated, but Nashvile's is as well. Red Wings in 5.

CGY vs SJ
The Sharks have had a good team for the last few years, but never done anything in the playoffs. This looks like the year that changes, what with Nabokov playing amazing, and everyone having just a little more experience under their belts. They have been dominant with Campbell, too. Sharks in 6.

COL vs MIN
On the one side, we have a Minnesota team that stayed the same throughout the year, barely winning the 3rd division. Colorado, though, made a big splash around the deadline by grabbing Forsberg and Foote, reuniting their top guys from the late 90s. I think that experience will be helpful, leading the Avs to victory. Avalanche in 5.

DAL vs ANH
By far the best, and tightest, of the first round match-ups. Both are very god teams that made a sizable splash mid-season. The Ducks brought back Niedermayer and Selanee, while the Stars traded for Richards. I think the Ducks experience from last year will put them over the edge, though. Ducks in 7.

After that, my picks are as follows:

MTL vs WSH
PIT vs NJ
DET vs COL
SJ vs ANA

MTL vs PIT
SJ vs COL

MTL vs SJ

wouldn't montreal winning mean they face the next lower seed? I thought they'd get the Devils, not the Capitals in round 2.

Regardless this changes nothing for my predictions.

Here's my picks for the first round:

Canadiens v. Bruins - 4 games
The Habs have been the Katrina to Boston's New Orleans this year, and I don't see that changing much this time around.

Penguins v. Senators - 5 games
The Pens were doing amazingly without Crosby, and now that he's back expect some great play from Pitt against a slumping Ottawa squad.

Capitals v. Flyers - 7 games
This is going to be a fun series to watch, but I think Ovechkin and the Caps will pull it out on momentum.

Devils v. Rangers - 6 games
Despite the other night's lost, the Rangers have had the Devil's number all year. I see this trend continuing.

Red Wings v. Predators - 5 games
Why do the Red Wings drink their soda straight out of the bottle? Every time they get close to a Cup, they choke. It'll happen again this year, but not against these guys.

Sharks v. Flames - 4 games
Campbell was the final piece of the puzzle for San Jose, who have been amazing as of late. The Flames just don't stand a chance.

Wild v. Avalanche - 7 games
Probably the series to watch this year (unless Washington/Pittsburgh happens). It'll be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Ducks v. Stars - 5 games
The Stars just haven't been themselves lately, and Anaheim is looking good.

Canadiens v. Bruins
Expect Bruins to lose the first, win the second game. Then Kovalev wakes up again and starts playing like he did all season vs. the Bruins. Habs in 5.

Penguins v. Senators
Senators are just too sloppy lately, Fleury is red hot atm. Penguins in 4.

Capitals v. Flyers
Capitals on a winning streak, Ovechkin wants to show the world his potential in the play offs. He will be the key in this series while Huet shuts out the flyers in the 6th game. Caps in 6.

Devils v. Rangers
Going to be a tight matchup, but Rangers wouldn't be Rangers if they would win the first round. Devils in 7

Red Wings v. Predators
Red Wings will play blindfolded. Wings in 4

Sharks v. Flames
Regular season has proven the Sharks got their game really sorted. Flames havent confinced me this season. Sharks in 5

Wild v. AvalancheI think the Wild got a slight advantage, but my heart lies at Colorado. Foppa in 7 \o/

Ducks v. Stars
Stars isnt really playing good after the last deadline. Ducks in 6

My dream final would be habs vs av's, but chances that it happens are really low. But everythings possible in the playoffs :)

As a final fantasy hockey note, had fun this year, thanks for playing everyone :) Hope to do it again next year.

Hopefully next year once i am eliminated from title contention i won't do shit like this though http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey/81182/3?date=2008-03-28 haha

Anyway on a more important note: real life predictions! Here is hoping my 3 real life teams do better than my 3 fantasy teams.

Canadiens vs. Bruins

Oh look, a good team vs. an average team. The lack of Koivu should be a bit of an issue in the playoffs where leadership tends to matter more but the Canadiens are just better, expecting Habs in 5.

Penguins vs. Senators

The Senators have pretty much played like shit recently but they're still a team that was best in the conference for quite a long time and the team that won the conference last year, there is definite upset potential here if Ottawa gets hot but they are paying for their goaltender issues. Pittsburgh in 6.

Capitals vs. Flyers

I don't expect the Caps to make too much noise in the playoffs but Alexander Ovechkin has proven he is the single most dominating skater in the game right now and he has been getting solid support from Backstrom, Semin, Huet, and Fedorov. Expecting Caps in 6 over the middling Flyers.

Devils v. Rangers

The Rangers are really good at losing in the playoffs, but they are even better at beating New Jersey(7-0-1) this year. The one NJ shootout win was in the most recent game which gives me some hope, but they just haven't been able to match the Rangers this year so I fully expect my Devils to be taking an early vacation :( Rangers in 5.

Red Wings vs. Predators

While I'm not predicting against Detroit, I think this is going to be a lot closer than most of you seem to believe. Part of the issue here I think is that everyone is under the impression Detroit(and Nashville too I guess) gets all its points by beating up what is perceived as a weak Central, when Detroit has done pretty poorly in their division, particularly against Nashville and Chicago. It's the other divisions Detroit has been farming, and Nashville has played them tough every game this year - I would be surprised if Detroit wins this in fewer than 6.

But mostly I just hope they win Game 2 because it's going to piss me off if I drive down there only for them to lose.

Sharks vs. Flames

This should be a really fun match up between two teams I don't have a lot of love for. San Jose has been unbelievably hot lately and the Flames have been almost equally cold(which is amusing given their mascots), so I think San Jose should get this pretty easily, but Iginla and Kipper certainly have the potential to make this interest. San Jose in 5.

Wild vs. Avalanche

This one can definitely go either way but the Avalanche have been coming around pretty nicely lately and I just don't have faith in Minnesota - I like how Colorado's style matches up with Minnesota's and the Avalanche have more players that can take over the game. The recent additions of Forsberg and Foote should let Colorado slip by in 7.

Ducks vs. Stars

Speaking of teams I really don't like playing each other, I am glad these guys have to knock each other out. I still fear Anaheim winning the cup more than any other team, and while I hate them more than possibly anything else in life they should win this series without too much trouble. Anaheim in 6.

Somewhat depressed by the fact I predicted for both the Rangers and Anahiem, my two least favorite teams :(

Playoff Avatar 2008 done \o/ Jumped on the Sin City theme bandwagon that was going on at the HFBoards forums (Habs subforum) and created my own.

Penguins v. Senators
Senators are just too sloppy lately, Fleury is red hot atm. Penguins in 4.
This is the only part of your post I strongly disagree with. I think you have to give the Sens at least enough credit for a single game.

congrats carl! its been a good year, and man was this a tough league ;__; If you check my history this was the only league out of like 10+ I have been in where i did not finish top 2. I will do this again next year for sure!

Onto playoff predictions!

Montreal vs Boston in 6
This will be closer than people realize

Pittsburgh vs Ottawa in 5
As much as I love spezza I love malkin more!

Washington vs Philadelphia in 7
This is going to be an excellent series, good for the game of hockey. However if the flyers decide to goon up ovechkin and injure him that will seriously suck

New Jersey vs New York in 6
For reasons people said, also predicting jagr to come alive this post season

Detroit vs Nashville in 5
Im wary to have both 1 seeds move on as that never happens, but this should be ok for detroit!

San Jose vs Calgary in 7
Im sensing an inspired effort from calgary even though I like san jose more

Minnesota vs Colorado in 5
My wild will start off the post season strong, after some bad luck last year (They faced anaheim and like every game they lost was by 1 goal)

Anaheim vs Dallas in 5
They are scary

ROUND TWO:

Montreal vs New York in 6
Again Jagr comes alive, and the habs really feel the loss of Koivu. Price isnt ready, and lets in some softies.

Pittsburgh vs Washington in 7
Oh baby Crosby vs Ovechkin in the playoffs. Good TV! Too bad the difference maker in this series will be Malkin.

Detroit vs Calgary in 6
I just dont have faith in detroits goaltending! This is the team that seems to always waste all their energy in the regular season and have nothing left in the tank playoff time.

Minnesota vs Anaheim in 7
Revenge is sweet, and now they have the home ice edge, where they can really shine. It will be an awesome series, but I really think we can do it! Im NOT biased xDD

ROUND THREE:

Pittsburgh vs New York in 6
This is the series where crosby really hushes the critics saying its malkins team. I think we can all sense a dynasty coming.

Minnesota vs Calgary in 6
Boogard and Goddard fight once a game, and it is epic every single time. This will be scrappy as hell, but awesome none the less.

FINALS:

Pittsburgh vs Minnesota in 7
Right down to the wire, but Malkin nets a goal in OT of game 7 to give the pens their first of many cups to come!

heheheheh you will bow before me when I am right, although I even think im not picking enough upsets. This is hockey. It wasnt too long ago the 5-6-7-8 seeds in the west all advanced!

It was a great fantasy season guys, I can't believe I actually won since I got lucky every time I needed to be. Should be even more competitive next year and I can't wait! Great season, guys.

Anyway, here's my rundown of the whole playoffs. Warning! tl;dr..

Eastern Conference

Round 1:
No. 1 Montreal vs No. 8 Boston
Considering the track record Montreal has against the Bruins, this must be a dream match up for them. Montreal gets cocky and finally lets the Bruins take a game from them for the first time since last season. Then the Habs kick it into gear and quickly oust the Bruins. Montreal in 5.

No. 2 Pittsburgh vs No. 7 Ottawa
The Sens are limping into the playoffs, still have questions about their goaltending, and are without Alfredsson. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, has been stellar lately, especially with the way Fleury is playing. He carried me through the Fantasy playoffs and he'll help do the same for the Penguins in the real thing. Ottawa isn't going to go down without a fight, though, and should be able to take a game or two. Pittsburgh in 6.

No. 3 Washington vs No. 6 Philly
This one is going to be close, IMO. The Flyers have the ability to make this a real series but it really depends on which team shows up. Biron ended the season, I think, on a shutout and that confidence will carry over. Ovechkin is not going to be denied, though, and he'll power the Capitals through a tough first round by whatever means necessary. Washington in 7.

No. 4 New Jersey vs No. 5 New York Rangers
New York has bested the Devils most of the regular season and with the amount of talent on the team I find it hard not to believe in them. Jagr is finally putting up some numbers to go along with Gomez's respectable season. You can never count out Brodeur's ability to make the big plays and you can bet he's going to steal a couple of games from the Rangers. If Lundqvist makes his presence known early this could be a short series, but I have a feeling Brodeur will delay the inevitable. New York in 6.

Round 2:
No. 1 Montreal vs No. 5 New York Rangers
As loaded with potential as the Rangers are, their inconsistency issues creep back in at the wrong time and the Canadiens capitalize to pull out of a 2-2 tie to claim the series. Montreal in 6

No. 2 Pittsburgh vs No. 3 Washington
The Washington Ovechkins again play their hearts out in another tough playoff series. Malkin makes the most of his opportunity to outshine his countrymen and helps legitimize the Penguins as a Cup contender. Pittsburgh in 7.

Conference Finals:
No. 1 Montreal vs No. 2 Pittsburgh
Despite a tough conference semifinals, the Penguins make up for handing the Habs the number one seed and home ice advantage by stamping their ticket to the Cup finals in Montreal. The series will be closer than the amount of games indicates. Pittsburgh in 5

Western Conference

Round 1:
No. 1 Detroit vs No. 8 Nashville
As a wings fan, this is not the match up I wanted to see. Detroit's record against the Central hasn't been all that glamorous or dominating despite winning the President's trophy. That said, Nashville made it to the playoffs on guts and passion alone and I think they're about on empty. The Wings make use of their finesse as usual and take care of business after an early scare. They proved last season that choking in the first round is a thing of the past. Detroit in 6.

No. 2 San Jose vs No. 7 Calgary
The Sharks are the team to beat in the west as far as I'm concerned. Brian Campbell makes this team the legit favorite to take it all. Meanwhile, Calgary hasn't been able to string together a series of wins and I don't see that trend stopping any time soon. Normally Kiprusoff is in fine form this time of the year but he hasn't looked like the goalie he was a few years ago. Joe Thornton keeps scoring like he's last year's Cheechoo and powers San Jose on through in an easy first round series. Oh yeah, and Nabokov just might make a few saves. San Jose in 5.

No. 3 Minnesota vs No. 6 Colorado
This series is so full of intangibles that it's ridiculous. Can Colorado stay healthy? Can Minnesota find scoring outside of Gaborik? Speaking of Gaborik and health, can he avoid injuries? Minnesota's defensive system outlasts Jose Theodore's heroics and Forsberg pulls something. Minnesota in a tight 7.

No. 4 Anaheim vs No. 5 Dallas
The Ducks have most of the core of last year's cup run. However, their forwards continue to have a tough time scoring, especially with some stellar play from Marty Turco. Dallas's forwards manage to break through Anaheim's D to oust the defending champs in round one. Surprising and impressive turn around after a late season mini slump. Dallas in 6.

Round 2:
No. 1 Detroit vs No. 5 Dallas
By now I expect Hasek to have two broken hips and back problems to the delight of those in Dallas. However, Detroit proves that the only goaltender they need actually plays on defense. Nick Lidstrom helps backup Chris Osgood look like he did earlier in the season, Pavel Datsyuk continues his quiet but amazing season to school Marty Turco and shut down any opposing center the Stars throw at him. Holmstrom returns to his early season form and causes chaos in front of the opposing net with some killer deflections. A much easier series for the Wings than round one. Detroit in 5.

No. 2 San Jose vs No. 3 Minnesota
The Wild will try to make this a series but when it comes down to it, I'd rather have Nabokov in net over Backstrom. Minnesota is also a bit worn out emotionally from the ups and downs of the Colorado series. A total team effort by the Sharks earns them a place in the conference finals. San Jose in 6.

Conference Finals:
No. 1 Detroit vs No. 2 San Jose
Every Wings fan's nightmare, a match up against San Jose. This will be the most entertaining series of the playoffs if it happens as both teams are the total package. Hasek resurrects from the dead midway through this series and despite being decent in net, Babcock gives Osgood the boot and Hasek costs the Wings the conference finals. Later on this summer, Detroit refuses to resign a willing to play Dominator and he's forced to hang 'em up for good. Anyway.... San Jose in 7.

FINALS:
No. 2 San Jose vs No. 2 Pittsburgh
The Sharks will not be denied, the western conference is superior, Fleury finally cracks, etc, etc. San Jose in 5.

OK, sorry almost a double post here but I pulled out all of the stats for my fantasy team for the season and I wanted to break it down:

Skater Totals
Goals: 238, 5th
Assists: 470, 2nd (missed 1st by 1)
+/-: 23, 4th
PIM: 796, 2nd
PPP: 311, 1st
SOG: 2200, 5th

Skater Records
Goals: 12-8-4, 6th
Assists: 17-7-0, 1st
+/-: 15-9-0, 2nd
PIM: 17-7-0, tied 1st
PPP: 19-3-2, 1st
SOG: 12-11-1, 6th

I knew my assists and power play points would be good, those have been an extremely reliable point source all season because pretty much all my players got a lot of power play time and my first pick is one of the league assist leaders. What surprised me was PIM and +/-. I didn't realize my team faired as well as it did getting penalty minutes, but plus/minus is the real anomaly: only a +23 on the year yet my record was second best. I realize that's a fickle stat but it's still weird. I conceded goals and shots most the year but I knew this already. My SOG should be much lower if everyone in the league actually played. But I guess you could argue that for all my stats.

Goaltender Totals
Wins: 78, 3rd
GAA: 2.35, 2nd
SV%: .918, 1st
SHO: 11, tied for 1st

Goaltender Records
Wins: 9-10-5, 8th
GAA: 12-12-0, tied at 6th
SV%: 15-9-0, 3rd
SHO: 4-4-16, tied at 6th

Here's the fun part. My year end totals are stellar in the goal tending department as these are pretty respectable numbers even in the real NHL (obviously not 78 wins but you get the idea). However, my actual records don't reflect these number at all. I realize GAA and SV% are extremely tight categories so that could always be an explanation. However, I think the real reason for these stats is the changes I made in who my goal tending was. I got better goalies as the season went on and they were especially good in the playoffs. Look at the matches for each round and the goal tending was there carrying me. Fleury and Price upped my averages over the last few weeks to make it look better than it was.

To sum up, I won when my primary stats of PIM, PPP, and Assists got help from 3 other stats, usually goal tending or a freak occurrence by the other skater stats. When I got dominated in goalies or one of my primary stats wasn't there, I lost. Look at my playoff games.. I won at least 2 of the 3 bread and butter stats and got the backup from goal tending. What I take away from all of this is that just like real hockey, goalies are always a must. We've always talked about how 4/10 stats was too much for 2 or 3 players to determine and this is definitely some concrete support for that. So next year I'm drafting goalies first since I got lucky with how my net situation turned out this year.

Skater Totals
Goals: 288, 1st
Assists: 448 4th
+/-: 73, 2nd
PIM: 630, 5th
PPP: 300, 2nd
SOG: 2400 from Ovechkin, 160 from the rest, 1st

Skater Records
Goals: 13-9-2, 2nd (tie)
Assists: 16-7-1, 2nd (tie)
+/-: 13-10-1, 4th
PIM: 15-8-1, 3rd
PPP: 15-7-2, 3rd
SOG: 18-5-1, 2nd

Skater conclusion:

If I look to my stats, I have to concur that my skater team was really solid at all fronts, which was exactly what I was aiming for. Feels quite weird ending with no category won, while I had the feeling my skater department would have taken the PPP considering i had Ovy and Lidstrom. Quite a solid performance for my team, just feels like a shame I can't keep them. I would love to play keeper league with this team. Even though I got a few totals won, it didnt win me the weeks, so my players should have been abled to divide that a bit better. But as regular season champion I can't whine about that.

Goaltender Totals
Wins: 57, 8th
GAA: 2.56, 7th
SV%: .916, 2nd (tie)
SHO: 9, 5th (tie)

Goaltender Records
Wins: 8-9-7, 10th
GAA: 13-11-10, 4th
SV%: 17-6-1, 1st
SHO: 7-5-12, 3rd

Goalie Conclusion
Or my Goon Conclusion as I prefer to call it. My biggest mistakes that I made this season where in my goon department, definition of a goon in this paragraph "monkey tied down in a case where players shoot at". My goalies have been far from great, but I made a big mistake by dropping Huet after I got him in a trade for DiPietro. But it looked like he just lost his starter spot to Price and Emery played a few solid games. Took the gamble and lost horridly. Vokoun and Thomas, even though they play on shitty teams, they were really solid most of the time, and actually got me a SV% #1 spot (points gained) with it. It's something I really didn't expect.

Had a great season, and look forward to continue this next year.
How about trying a double league, single- and keeper ;)

Skater Totals:
Goals: 259, 2nd
Assists: 425, 5th
+/-: -8, 10th :x i didnt realize that sucked so much
PIM: 609, 7th
PPP: 285, 4th
SOG: 2251, 3rd

Skater Records
Goals: 17-6-1, 1st
Assists: 16-7-1, 2nd (tie)
+/-: 9-14-1, 11th
PIM: 12-12-0, 6th
PPP: 15-5-4, 2nd
SOG: 15-9-0, 3rd

Total on Offense: 84-53-7 for 175 points

I think I needed more balance, I did awesome in G, A, PPP, SOG but i really needed to address those weak areas.

Goaltender Totals
Wins: 74, 4th
GAA: 2.49, 5th
SV%: .915, 4th
SHO: 6, 9th

Goaltender Records
Wins: 11-7-6, 2nd
GAA: 10-14-0, 10th
SV%: 8-16-0, 12th :(
SHO: 2-7-15, 12th

Total on Defense: 31-44-21 for 83 points.

Wow I did not realize this was that bad :( I should have looked deeper into this. My actual stats were good if you look, but it apparently REALLY did not play out in the records. Theres no way a .915 save percentage should result in last place in that stat, considering gr33n had .916 and got first.

This really just shows me that I got incredibly unlucky :(

Had we been playing Roto I would have had 77 points, which would have been good for 4th in my roto public league (that I won with 96 points no less!)

Things to keep in mind for next year surely!

Played a Det/Col game on NHL 08 after not picking it up for a while, man I'm rusty :( 3-0 on superstar but it was a mess, missed a penalty shot with Zetterberg(!) and posted it on some other breakaway where I had about a foot of empty net with Drake. I've been itching to play it lately which happens every year around playoff time, might need to play some games against NYR/Nashville/Philly to make myself feel better :D

While I said I wasn't going to post about fantasy anymore since all the other cool kids are doing it:

Skater Records
Goals: 12-8-4 (T-7th)
Assists: 12-12-0 (6th)
Plus/Minus: 11-12-1 (6th)
Penalty Minutes: 17-7-0 (T-1st)
Powerplay Points: 13-7-3 (4th)
Shots on Goal: 21-3-0 (1st)

Skater Stats
Goals: 240 (3rd)
Assists: 471 (1st)
Plus/Minus: +115 (1st)
Penalty Minutes: 875 (1st)
Powerplay Points: 288 (3rd)
Shots on Goal: 2400 (2nd)

My records ended up in the middle of the field as a whole, but my actual stat totals made me probably the single best team for skaters. My team had kind of an unfortunate year that way, it produced pretty nicely but often didn't end up mattering.

Goalie Records
Wins: 10-11-3 (7th)
Goals Against Average: 15-9-0 (2nd)
Save Percentage: 15-9-0 (2nd)
Shutouts: 3-4-17 (9th)

Goalie Stats
Wins: 70 (5th)
Goals Against Average: 2.46 (4th)
Save Percentage: .912 (T-5th)
Shutouts: 5 (10th)

My goalie stats ended up really not being very good considering that I had Martin Brodeur from day 1 and Roberto Luongo almost the entirety of the season. I would definitely blame the later more so than the former, but Goalie stats were something I really needed for my team to work, and was really what my team was built to rely on, so a lot of why I didn't end up winning falls on these categories I think.

Overall: 2nd in Regular Season, 4th in Playoffs(although I'd have beaten Vin if I played my dudes!)

The only thing I think I would have changed would be not making a few trades, in general I think they worked out but a few of them (the Luongo trade for instance) in spite of generally being good trades from a theoretic perspective ended up hurting me more than they helped. I had a really, really poor draft and still ended up doing well so I'm not too dissapointed, and more importantly I had a nice time with this and next year promises to be even better.

My teams in general really collapsed during the playoffs, after going into the playoffs 2nd, 1st, and 3rd I failed to win a single game for the first two weeks of the playoffs. A big part of this was the fact that my teams tend to have a similar batch of players and my pool was enduring injuries and slumps at that point, but it was a bit of a bitch to struggle so much after doing so well in the regular season. I ended up finishing 4th, 3rd, and 6th, which is not nearly as good as I should have done given the rosters the teams had. My roto league team ended up doing the best, coming in 2nd and 3 points short of first.

Wildwing will post fantasy stats too!

Skater Stats
Goals: 239 (4th)
Assists: 351 (8th)
Plus/Minus: +30 (3rd)
Penalty Minutes: 590 (8th)
Powerplay Points: 221 (8th)
Shots on Goal: 2018 (9th)

Skater Record
Goals: 13-10-1 (4th)
Assists: 9-14-1 (T-9th)
Plus/Minus: 14-10-0 (3rd)
Penalty Minutes: 10-13-1 (8th)
Powerplay Points: 8-13-3 (T-8th)
Shots on Goal: 10-14-0 (T-8th)

Goalie Stats
Wins: 85 (1st)
Goals Against Average: 2.67 (T-9th)
Save Percentage: .903 (11th)
Shutouts: 9 (T-6th)

Goalie Record
Wins: 15-4-5 (1st)
Goals Against Average: 9-15-0 (11th)
Save Percentage: 9-15-0 (10th)
Shutouts: 5-7-12 (5th)

Overall: 6th season, 6th playoffs

I missed the draft so I got an auto draft team and somehow ended up with Luongo and Kipper, and for a couple months (almost half the season iirc) I had to make a trade since I was about .500. Synre ended up offering Cam Ward and Kovalchuk for Luongo and I accepted due to my skaters not producing at all (outside of Sundin). The result, I lost 6 straight weeks even when Kovalchuk was producing. Carl sent me a trade a few weeks after the Luongo trade, Kipper and a player for Ryan Miller and Pronger, which again I accepted due to needing some support from my D. Still didn't provide much spark and my lack of hockey knowledge showed as I had no idea who I should add from the FA list. I kept at it because even though I was losing, I had players that were producing, just not at the same time. I snuck into the playoffs on the last day and was matched up with Carl in the first round. It was close, I lost a couple skater categories by just a few points and was killed in goalie categories.

Anyway I had fun and next year I will win it all, I am sure of it.

So back to real life hockey - playoffs started today!

Outside of the very beginning and the very end the Sens looked pretty decent defensively, but I just don't see how they can win without some more offense. They had about a thousand power plays and couldn't put the puck in the net, against a team as good as Pittsburgh that's just not going to work :(

The only game I didn't end up seeing any of was NJ/NYR, very depressed to see my Devils lose but not particularly surprised. I am still not heartened about their prospects to advance.

What did hearten me was Calgary beating San Jose, although I think San Jose figured out in the last two minutes or so that they are a much better team. They didn't seem to come ready to play tonight, which is strange since it is, you know, the playoffs. If they play like they did towards the end for an entire game I don't think Calgary can handle them but I am glad to see the Flames take one early - I'd love to see San Jose lose or at least waste some energy.

Colorado/Minnesota was good too, the Wild nearly managed to steal it after being down 2-0 but the game went to a lovely playoff overtime, lasting long enough that it would have normally been ruined by a shootout. Sakic scoring in OT still kind of makes me cringe as a Red Wings fan, but I'd kind of like to see the Avs advance - while they are one of the four teams I really dislike the NHL is more fun for me when the teams I dislike are alive near the end playing the ones I do, and the potential Colorado/Detroit r2 matchup would be awesome.

Yeah, Calgary jumped out early and Iginla just tried to make sure they kept it that way. I was pretty convinced it was going to be a high scoring first game when San Jose scored with still like half the first period to play to make it 2-1 but then things settled down. Hats off to Kiprusoff who stood on his head to keep his team with a solid lead. Shame he didn't put in a few more performances like that for ME. lol. San Jose/Calgary and Pittsburgh/Ottawa were the two games I actually got to see and both promise to be great sets of games.

As for tomorrow, I hope Detroit comes out swinging. A solid game one edge will definitely help squash any confidence Nashville has.

tl;dr post, due to a quote. Yes, I'm aware I'm posting predictions AFTER some games have been played. Oh, well.

The last time they were in the Playoffs together, didn't it stretch to 7 games? I'd give Boston an extra game, just because past records have said so. Montreal in 6.

I think this series will be dragged out to 7 games. Pittsburgh has not had the same recent playoff experience as Ottawa has had. Pittsburg will still make it, though. Pittsburgh in 7.

I've always had a soft spot for Ovechkin, so I'm pulling for Washington in this match. His inexperience in the post-season is what will slow down the inevitable outcome of this series, though. I completely agree.

I think New York's offensive powers are far too great to ignore. New York in 5.

Round 2:
No. 1 Montreal vs No. 5 New York Rangers
As loaded with potential as the Rangers are, their inconsistency issues creep back in at the wrong time and the Canadiens capitalize to pull out of a 2-2 tie to claim the series. Montreal in 6
No way. Nuh uh. New York has way too many offensive combinations they can pull out of their asses. I think Montreal will be overwhelmed at home, and will not be able to keep their game up afterwards. New York in 5.

This is a tough one. I would love to see Washington pull through. For no real reason other than preference, I'd have to say Washington in 6.

Conference Finals:
No. 3 Washington vs No. 5 New York Rangers
Underlines indicate changed teams. This is what I believe the Eastern Conference Finals will boil down to. Ovechkin alone can match up to over half of New York's offensive answers. However, I believe New York to be the better team, overall. Both teams have some experience among them, New York taking the majority. I expect this to be a drawn out series. New York in 7.

No arguments, as a fellow Wings fan. However, I see this as a 5 game match. Detroit in 5.

No. 2 San Jose vs No.
San Jose is one of those teams that was quiet for a while (think expansion days), and have slowly become better and better. After last night's loss, I think San Jose will wake up and attack Calgary. San Jose in 6.

I think last night is the start of a trend that will be set. Games determined by one goal once the clock stops ticking. I think Colorado has the potential to take this one, seeing as how Zeus isn't throwing broken bones at anybody else, anymore. Colorado in 7.

Turco is going to be the difference maker. I have a feeling. No arguments.

Naw, Hasek isn't *that* frail. I think he'll be okay, but I do expect a rotation around game 3 or 4 for the sake of giving Hasek a rest. That, in turn, might give Dallas some momentum, but that will quickly be flattened. Detroit in 6.

No. 2 San Jose vs No. 6 Colorado
Colorado will be too tired to compete on a professional level. I think this series will feature a lot of penalties, maybe an injury or two to a core player on both teams. While I'm giving the imagery of a brutal, tiring series, San Jose will clean this up in 5.

No! If you say Detroit's going to lose, Hasek *won't* retire! He is my favorite goaltender, but he needs to retire, so I'm saying Detroit in 6. Bless his old hips...

FINALS:
No. 1 Detroit vs No. 5 New York Rangers
Oh, come on. Nostalgia. Shanahan on the same ice as Detroit, amirite? I think by *now* Hasek will break something, and Osgood will take over. 7 games. No long explanations, no theories, just 7 games.

After the first round, my comments are pretty much said in jest. The predictions weren't, but I don't really believe Hasek is going to die or anything in the playoffs. Detroit will probably, depending on play, slide Osgood in for a game each series. If Hasek plays well, I expect he'll start every game.. but if Hasek is playing just OK, I could see Babcock giving him a night off but this is only if he's pretty poor in net. The Wings like the safety net that is Chris Osgood but they are completely biased in Hasek's favor despite the fact that I actually trust Ozzie more.

Well, I figured as much. I was just playing along. I think Hasek is the one with the most talent as far as playoff runs go, but Osgood doesn't get hurt nearly as much. Rotation is inevitable. If Hasek bruises his pinky toe, we'll probably give him the night off (okay, that was exaggeration, but you see my point?).

Went to the Wings/Preds game this afternoon... I am really enjoying the Predators qqing about how the refs/breaks caused them to lose.

The only reason they got any goals at all was a weird bounce off the boards and a mistake by one of our defenseman - both the goals they ended up getting were essentially handed to them. At the very least we could have two more goals - both Franzen and Filppula flat out missed empty nets, and in addition those there were a lot of really, really good chances players should easily have buried. I actually agree with them that the early on that goal that got waved by the Preds should have been good, but outside of that their crying is pretty sad and is probably not what they should be focusing on after getting outshot 27-12 in the last two periods. It was nice to see good ol' McCarty put one in too, funny that all the Wings that scored today were on all three stanley cup winning teams.

As far as actually being there, the atmosphere was fun. Outside of some jackass next to me who whistled as loud as he possibly could at each and every opportunity which pretty much completely knocked out my left ear for the duration of the game, it was nice to see the crowd being fairly loud and the attendance seemed good - some of the lower seats were empty, but as far as I could tell pretty much every single seat in the upper section was taken which was good to see after our sort of spotty 06-07 playoff attendance.

EDIT: Also i pumped that our annoying chanting is picked up by NBC, watched the highlight of the fourth goal and was amused

ELL-IS ELL-IS ELL-:goal:

clearly we got in his head

I was watching that game, and when everybody started chanting, I was like, "That NEVER works."

...I was wrong. It's a good thing, this time, but still.
