The Everything NHL Thread

Nice. I love making teams of friends, it's the only way I've ever played the games.

Name: You know it
Number: 27
Shoots: Right
Pos: D - scoring
Strengths: Accuracy, Passing, Agility
Weaknesses: Speed, Shot Power, Agressiveness

Also... Vanek finally decided to earn his money. Fuck yeah.

Name: Ivo Greenzky
Number: 33
Shoots: Left
Pos: LW - sniper
Strengths: Accuracy, Speed, Wrist Shot, Endurance
Weaknesses: Agressiveness, Checking, Passing

Height 6'1
Weight 205 LBS

Visor: no ;)

Name: Carl Carlson
Number: 9
Pos: RW
Shoots: Right - playmaker
Strengths: Speed, Endurance, Passing
Weaknesses: NONE lol i dunno let's say Slapshots and Checking

I'm 5'11 and 140 so you might wanna fudge some muscle/weight for me.

Also you could put me as goalie since that's what I'd really want to play if I played hockey but I'm assuming you're reserving that for Brodeur or yourself.

Either is fine, I'll probably end up just throwing myself wherever we have a hole(like the gaping lack of a real point shot with no one having any slap shot power for instance), I'm not too picky. Trying to avoid using any real NHLers if possible but I'm not sure if we have 12 forwards/6 D/2 goalies worth of smogoners who can at least feign moderate interest in hockey.

For what its worth Arti/curt/zerowing/aldaron were active on IRC when I got this idea because everyone was relating their real life hockey experience, 3 forwards and a goalie in that bunch.

For what its worth the current roster is basically:

C zerowing
LW Arti, gr33n
RW Curt
D DM, WER
G aldaron

and then Carl at RW or D. Not sure where Psycho or I will end up, his current create a dude on my xbox is a forward but he is a real life D so I might switch him since psuedorealism is a goal on at least some level and I would be equally incompetent at every position since I can skate but not do anything related to hockey so I'll just plug holes like I said before! The rest of the people who actually read this thread will hopefully post, we're like 1/3 there currently! I think after the people who actually read this topic post I will just start filling in the bottom lines with cool smogon users in general.

Also we put Ellis on waivers and Psycho's dumb Kings took him >:( This makes me sad.

Name: Mad Jackal

Hey John,

Your prediction skills know no bounds. Lou Lamoriello just announced that Scott Niedermayer's No. 27 will one day hang from the rafters at The Rock. Please tell me you see millions of dollars and Kelly Monaco in my future!

Bill
Brick, N.J.

Lamoriello said the same thing about John MacLean a while back, but we will see. Millions for you in the future? That is possible. Write the next sitcom sensation. Monaco? I don't see it happening, Billy.

But since you brought it up, here are some other predictions for 2008:

1. Amy Winehouse will go to rehab.

2. Jarret Stoll will get traded to the Islanders and start dating Christie Brinkley. By 2010, he will be dating Betty White. White is six years older than Gordie Howe.

3. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will announce that the Montreal Canadiens will move to St. George, Utah, saying the Sun Belt will continue to support hockey. The hundreds who watch the Coyotes and Thrashers on TV agree.

4. Oilers GM Kevin Lowe will begin outlining this summer's offer sheet to Malkin -- 20 years, $200 million and the keys to Fernando Pisani's place. A chagrined Pisani will move in with teammate Zack Stortini. Pisani will be put on a line with Malkin and score 50 goals, eventually leaving to sign with Pittsburgh and play on a line with Crosby. He will score 93 goals in the 2010-11 season and make so much money in endorsements from The Olive Garden that he will buy the Oilers, fire Lowe and buy Malkin's place. Malkin will move in with Dustin Penner, and their conversations will be nonstop and riveting.

i found this hilarious

Awesome predictions, and Synre, If you get too much LW's, could put me at center or rw aswell, just would like an offensive position ;)

1st or 2nd liner ftw :p

on what system you play the game btw?

360 all day every day baby

(and by that i mean like a game a day maybe)

Anyway based on people who actually posted and/or talked to me on IRC i had 5 forwards 2 D a goalie and wherever I decided to put psycho and I, so I figured I'd throw Vin in even though he didn't post like a pro since he's the obvious pick to round out enough people for 2 lines of forwards and D.

So after that I had

Jason-Vineon-Carl
Gr33n-zerowing-Jackal

Tofu-DM
Psycho-WER

Unfortunately I don't think it's realistic to give both lines 10 minutes of ice time a period, so I decided to make a third/fourth line of cool people who for the most part are not hockey people to fill the roster out a bit!

Jump-chaos-LS
LordS-Brain-Curt (he asked ok we need a goon !!)
Misty-Surgo

This also gave me the easy solution for who would wear the C in chaos(too bad I can't make the Captain C lowercase, lol), with Arti/Carl/DM rotating the two As. I don't intend to really use these lines more than I have to but we'll see how it goes! Aiming to play the top two lines evenly and only use these two as a last resort. I'll probably start the season after the Wings game tonight, should be fun :P

Also as far as goalie I just used aldaron because I don't intend to play very good defense so that'd be no fun for Carl and his subsequently ruined fantasy stats... hopefully aldaron turns out to be pro. I couldn't think of who I wanted to be the backup goalie... I debated on using Sanders, who could defend the net with his massive girth, but I instead chose to use... Psycho's little sister :D

come on she plays goal in real life ok

I thought about making myself before I realized if I made me like I play hockey irl, I'd be like every forward you already have. So I guess I'll make myself differently.

Vichely Vineonov

Centerman
Shoots : Left
Speciality : PK, Deflections in front of the net, Power forward
Strenght : Face-offs, Checking, Accuracy, Passing
Weakness : Wrist Shot, Speed

edit : make Jason Petit your backup goaltender, he is awesome : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixIGHJm5nxM

hahah i love that commercial Vin, we don't get it in the US obviously but I'd seen it before when center ice gives the canadian teams' broadcasts... I'm kinda jealous, you guys have MUCH better commercials than we do in general :(

Dear Synre,

I would like to talk to you about my ice time and place on the team. I feel that I could easily be on the first line and am quite appalled that I play second line D with this...WER fella(hehe). If you wont move me to first line I must request a trade.

Sincerly,
Psycho

P.S. My agent made me do it

Yeah, Agreeing on small french tender...make him as small as possible and as good as posisble. He will, without a doubt, let up bullshit so dont feel bad making him perfect. But yeah, I am voting for the PsychoSynre connection on line 1 D.

But, you should make my sis be the starter or split time between minitender, and minipsycho :)

Eagerly awaiting the next 23 and a half hours - still no deadline trades yet as much as espn and friends insist players are going to move, i grow bored.

It's insider only as far as WHERE these guys are potentially going, but as far as who is(and in some cases isn't moving) espn's rumor list is here: http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/feat...ttp://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/features/rumors

some of it is kind of useful!

The Wings officially signed McCarty and apparently he'll be back up in the pros in 2 weeks. I am not sure how effective it is but from a fan morale standpoint it feels good after watching the wheels fall of off Motor city's team the last few weeks. Still waiting for something interesting to happen otherwise, I am sure there will be about eight trades during my poly sci class tonight.

EDIT: Forsberg back at Colorado, just when I started to hate them again too! Not sure if this'll start much of a chain reaction since I don't know how much of a contender Colorado is to begin with but it'll make things more interesting, I'm sure.

you know what i'm talking about. argh.

I get home from the store and park my car just as Buffalo scores to make it 3-0. By the time I'm in the house and settled down, it's 3-2 and we go on to lose the game in the shootout with Briere scoring the winning goal.

Fuck that.

Deadline summary for those of you who had lives today: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=3265311

Man I feel terrible for Cristobal Huet, as a Caps(Ovechkin?) fan I certainly enjoy him going there but he seemed so sad in the interview, like because he had a kinda bad few weeks they just threw him out because he wasn't good enough anymore :( I wanted to give him a hug :( Don't worry Cristobal you can come play with the future MVP, and also Sergei Fedorov, who should be an interesting addition. Washington would be pretty dangerous if they hadn't lost Nylander and could keep Clark/Poti/etc. for longer than about 10 minutes, the full Washington roster is actually pretty good now. If they managed to resign people they should be pretty strong.

The Devils made a pretty irrelevant trade, I'm not too concerned about them because basically no one in the East has gotten better today outside of Ottawa gaining a fourth liner and Washington who is pretty much a non factor for them.

I am actively terrified for my Wings however - they'll still win the Central obviously, but the way they've been slumping #1 is far from a lock and Dallas is much better with Richards, San Jose is better with Campbell, and even Colorado got a little better with Foote and Forsberg and they are a potential first round matchup. Whether or not we can take Anaheim was always up for question, and the other Western potential playoff teams are pretty tough too(Calgary, Minnesota, Vancouver, Phoenix), it's going to be tough to escape the West this year I think.

Still waiting on Hossa news!

EDIT: oh FUCK Hossa to Pittsburgh this does not bode well for my Devils

or my Caps

or my Red Wings

But after this year that's still a dumb deal. Being reported that the trade is for Armstrong, Crosby's BFF, a 1st rounder from last year, and a first rounder next year. That's a pretty major long term hit for a guy that has proven to want more money than he is worth and thus is incredibly unlikely to stay in Pittsburgh due to the need to sign Crosby and Malkin to expensive long term deals. Not a good call on Pittsburgh part imo since I don't think even if they do manage to get to the finals they'll be able to beat random_western_juggernaut.

Also contrary to what I thought before, the Wings did apparently make a minor move, giving a second round pick this year and a fourth round pick next year for Brad Stuart from the Kings. I don't really know much about him other than he is a former 3rd overall pick so he has to have some upside, although his point totals are pretty pedestrian. He's deadline fodder either way with this being the last(and only) year on his current contract, not sure how much I like that deal but I guess Detroit mostly only cares about its sixth and seventh round picks anyway, lol.

what is montreal thinking lol

lets be sellers when we are on the verge of first in the conference....

I was running to computers all day between my classes today just to realize the disappointment that the Wild decided to sit on their butts while the Avs got better. The only upside is some of our other divisional foes like Calgary and Vancouver decided not to do anything (well, Calgary didn't have room to do much of anything anyway).

The Wild decide to get LEG STOMPING Chris Simon.. lets go out and get a goon! yay

EDIT now that I have time: Wow Hossa to Penguins - though Penguins gave a lot away - this years first round pick and their first round pick last year in Angelo Esposito and some other guys that are 25/26 years old and not that terrible. They gave a lot away and STILL need to resign Hossa after this year. Though, it sure would be fun to watch the Pens with those three playing.

EDIT EDIT: And all cap (ovechkin) fans now are coming out of the woodwork! They make a few deals and people start proclaiming they've been Cap followers forever

Well at least the Isles got rid of Simon.

Still, why did we get rid of Bergeron? Don't we need more offense rather than less?

So, the main trade that interested me is the Atlanta/Pittsburgh deal: Marian Hossa and Dupuis for Armstrong, Christensen, Angelo Esposito(for those of you who ask is he related to Phil: no, they're not related) and the first rounder. This one gets me because they will lose Hossa next year unless Crosby is willing to be the guy I hear he is and take a paycut. Also they lose a first round draft pick which isn't really a HUGE deal this year because Pittsburgh will not be able to get Stamkos because LA is sound in that department.
8466148.jpg
BUT, there are a few picks that Pittsburgh could make that might be fun: Jared Staal, Jimmy Hayes, Robbie Czarnik, Nick Larson, David Toews, or A.J. Jenks that they can realistically get. A couple of these picks could be solid but I am not sure how Jenks or Czarnik or Larson will do. I havent really seen the others play except for Staal who will be solid. But after playing with the three I am not sure on I think that they will see significant AHL time prior to becoming Detroit versions of Matt Ellis, I think.

EDIT: NHL has Larson listed on the pre-draft rankings for 2008 but Washington already drafted him as far as I know

Ottawa made a pretty solid deal for Martin Lapointe. I am not entirely sure why Chicago would get rid of one of their bigger leaders (In the room, not the scoresheet(3 goals 4 assists and 47 PIM in 52games)) but he is kinda old so...come on Chicago, CHRIS CHELIOS IS OLD HE ISN'T GOING ANYWHERE

Federov is an interesting deal to. For Teddy Ruth the Notre Dame d-man. Ted is a good player, I've played with him a few times but I am not sure he is a Federov equivalent...we'll see.

Adam Foote for Draft Picks...is it just me or is Colorado rebuilding its goon team? Is Roy coming back? WHO KNOWS.

Dallas got the better of their deal with Tampa in my opinion but we will see how Turco takes to Holmqvist.

LA STOP GIVING YOUR PLAYERS AWAY...because they will inevitably draft poorly so draft picks are pad for LA to have...sighhhh

The Caps are just snagging players like Huet who will be fighting for a job with Olie the Goalie and also Johnson-hi-I-am-apparently-not-bad who went into overtime with New Jersey(they aren't the BIGGEST scoring threat but)

Jan Hlavac for a 7th round pick? Jeez Tampa Bay Traders. Waste of a player in my opinion.

Hal Gill for two draft picks...Hal Gill isn't worth my shoe on the point. He is big but man is he slow and also seemingly stupid on the ice.

Well, thats my breakdown. What do you guys think of the deadline deals?

Just heard the following:

the deal for Hossa was intended to be O'Byrne, Grabovsky, Halak for Hossa, Hedberg. After the Pens upped the ante, Waddell asked for Higgins and Gainey said no.

I'm glad Gainey said no, like to see O'Byrne and Higgins stay with the Canadiens, and not ship em off for a rental. This also explains why we already had shipped off Huet. Gainey expected this to be a clear deal without adding Higgins.
