The Everything NHL Thread

In other news, the NHL is considering having two Winter Classic games next season.. a double header featuring the first game at Fenway with the Bruins vs ?? and the second game out in Calgary with the Flames against another Canadian team. Scott Burnside from ESPN actually breaks this down pretty well in terms of why the NHL might do this and it makes sense in that regard. For the lazy, it's mainly because NBC wants a game they can market to the United States and Canada thinks it's unfair that once again two US teams will be highlighted in arguably the best regular season event in the NHL. So the compromise is to hold two games instead of one. What's everyone's take on doubling the number of outdoor games?

Personally, I think I have to side with Burnside on this one. While I'd gladly sit down and watch two outdoor hockey games, it just won't work out on New Year's. College bowl games are played on January 1 as well which means a lot of competition later in the day when this Canadian game would be played. If the NHL (aka Bettman) is as worried about TV ratings in the states as it appears, this second game would ultimately be a dumb decision should they choose to run with it. The lack of interest in Canadian teams in the United States is the reason why the Winter Classic is in Boston and the Flames against whomever is clearly not going to out compete the arguably more popular sport of college football. Not in America. Hockey fans would tune in, but the fringe fans probably won't and those are the fans an almost gimmicky event like this is supposed to attract.

A better solution, IMO, would be to pair up the Bruins against the Habs and keep it to one game. It's a long standing rivalry that would involve teams from both countries that could please both NBC and CBC. Yes, it would still be played in the states but you know Habs fans would make the trip if their team was involved. Then play next year's game in Canada or something.

I wonder if Islanders will take Hedman over Tavares, honestly I think Hedman has the potential to be an dominant defencemen where Tavares might be a 30-40 goal scorer.

I'd rather take Hedman than Tavares personally. I'm of the opinion that Tavares will need a good setup man in order to produce, and frankly the Isles don't have that quite yet. I think we'd get better production out of a good defenseman anyway.

Both are better fits than Duchene, I think, but I'd be happy with any of them (especially if they can get us a new Coliseum!).

I believe D take much more time to mature usually. You should not expect production from them early. Little depth will at least insure at least a lot of ice time.

I have a feeling the Isles have decided they would pick Hedman though. Someone brought up that won't sell them tickets..... I agree.

Tavares the Islanders.

I'm at work missing the whole thing live, happening in my city and that pisses me off.

Hopefully I get home in time for Montréal's first pick.

I missed the first 3 picks because of work, too - like the choices so far though. Kinda bummed Toronto didn't get Schenn because brother tandems are cool, but the guy they guy instead of him should be an interesting guy to watch. The highlight of the draft is definitely Burke being mic'd up like it is Monday Night Football or something owning the Senators GM. Poor guy just can't get anything to go his way and he's stuck with Heatley to boot!

I like the Pronger trade for both teams - I feel like Philly overpaid if the picks I am reading that are involved are right, but he'll help them win now and make them a lot more apt to defend some of the fast, skilled teams in the East, assuming the officials let him trounce around the way he did in the West. It also seals my fate playing in the Atlantic (or at the very least the East) in NHL 10 - Crosby, Avery, AND Pronger? I'm gonna kick some ass!

Glad we went with a Québécois in the first round, pleased the crowd, it was lovely.

I'm going to trust he was worth it.

go Leblanc.

Flyers defiantly overpaid for pronger, and It's not like we desperately needed another big defense -man. Sbisa was one of our best prospects, and lupul was a consistant scorer. Plus the draft picks....

This is exactly the kind of trade Holmgren said he wouldn't be doing, and the same type of deal that led to Clarke losing his job.

Double posting because we're dead again...Who do you think will go where come July 1st?

For some reason I see Cammelleri going back to LA (since they probably won't land Heatley).
