Camp Niemi was rumored to be looking for $4 million+ but I would imagine anywhere in the Halak range (3.75) is what they're looking for. But I must have misread Montreal's cap space when I checked earlier... it's not as bad as I thought. I definitely agree the Caps shouldn't be looking for a goalie, despite what the so called experts are saying.

Well, i suppose i'll live with the cap. i could appreciate less slamming though... anyways, so the hawks couldn't keep Niemi and sign Detroit's whipping boy? let the domination of the Central commence i suppose.... Blackhawks are officially bogus with a core and tons of prospects.... perhaps crawford'll play more games and go jimmy howard on us... only God knows...

Best core in the league and a bunch of prospects that should've been playing in the league much earlier if they didn't already have a ridiculous amount of depth. Even with Turco having a bad record against Detroit (and if you truly believe that he'll always be playing bad against them then you're a moron), most likely they'll split the series at best for Detroit. Crawford is going to be a legitimate goaltender anyways so he might even be the starter halfway through the season for all anyone knows.

Hawks will win the Central again this year. Learn it.

Honestly I'd say the Thrashers should just take Niemi since they already have like 8 of our players from last year

Fuck Tim Kennedy. I'm so glad the Sabres are buying out his bullshit $1mil arbitration award after he clears waivers. What kind of cocksucker pulls that shit on his hometown team? AS A ROOKIE? Get fucked, Timmy.

I also like the Shaone Morrisonn signing. Replacing Tallinder/Lydman with Leopold/Morrisonn is actually beginning to feel like an upgrade overall, I'm happy with the moves.

Lastly, I hope the Kennedy move means we can re-sign Mair. Highly improbable, but I can dream.

So I was bored and I did some calculations for the Hawks 2010-11 roster:

Forwards:
1st Line: Kane (6.3m)/Toews (6.3m)/Brouwer (1.025m)
2nd Line: Hossa (5.275m)/Sharp (3.9m)/Beach (1.17m)
3rd Line: Kopecky (1.2m)/Bolland (3.375m)/Bickell (0.55m)
4th Line: Skille (0.6m)/Taffe (0.55m)/Stalberg (0.85m)

Defense:
Line 1: Keith (5.5m)/Seabrook (3.5m)
Line 2: Campbell (7.15m)/Hjalmarsson (3.5m)
Line 3: Hendry (0.625m)/Vishnevskiy (0.825m)/Scott (0.5m)

Goalies:
Turco (1.3m)
Crawford (0.8m)

Penalties: 4.15m
TOTAL: 58.995m
Free Space: 0.405m

That's what I'd see as their roster for next year. They could always try upgrading to better 4th line center with the extra cap room they have (never thought I'd be saying that LMAO), but that's really their only option at this point with only 400k to work with. If they kept Niemi, they'd most likely only be able to go with a 20 man roster, which is risky, and they probably wouldn't be able to bring up Beach or Crawford either when they definitely deserve some playing time in the NHL.

That 4 mil hit will be gone next year, which is good because we should be looking to sign Seabrook to a long term deal and hopefully Sharp when his contract runs out in a couple of years. Sharp's gonna be looking for a big deal though so it'll be hard to afford him, especially with 4-5 more free agents after this season. We'll see what happens I guess.

Here's what I'm wondering: in other sports, players can renegotiate their deal in the middle of it to lower their own cap hit while staying with the team and making the same (or more) money in the long run. Can't that happen in the NHL?

the best core in the league? This "best" core could hold its own against Detroit in 09, with the players they got rid of. This "best" core was only able to split an injured Detroit in 09-10, not to mention lose the last game at home in a shootout no less. This is your "best" core with Versteeg and co. mind you. now we've got a team with a great core, untested young talent and cheap pickups?, a veteran goalie whose record is not very good period against your archrival and a rookie whom last i checked (he was rochester's starting goalie?) as of the latest got his socks knocked off against the Griffins 6-3? Ok, maybe i stretched that, but my point is, this is a new hawks team, and the best they got against the Red Wings, who are now healthy and stacked, is two wins. will they make the playoffs? sure i respect their talent enough to think they'll do it, but to say they'll repeat is a huge stretch right now. see ya in april...

Rebuilding with Giguere? Didn't they had some talented youthfull goalies that they traded away?

Do not even get me started on what John Ferguson thought "building a team" was.

I don't recall any gifted goaltender, but I don't solely follow the Leafs so it's possible. But Giguere is just a 2-3 year investment for Gustavsson, and he's a capable goalie as well. As far as I recall the Leafs didn't give up anything major (got rid of Jason Blake's contract).

The Kessel trade was brutal, but he hasn't been terrible since then. Got rid of some dead weight and got some capable players in return, and as someone said he did get some good off-season signings. Unfortunately most people will likely judge his time as a GM by the Kessel trade. He's trying to rebuild based off of trades and signings rather than through drafting, and it's really risky.

Yeah, his offseason signings were good. Hopefully we're not trading away one of these "goalies of the future" like Ferguson. Looking at the draft class, it wasn't that strong. I guess it's not as bad as I thought it was, but this year's draft class was great. x.x

It's official, so sources claim:
Modano is coming to Detroit!
I would rather have someone else.... but that's how we roll...
at least we can sign helm and abby, though abby is probably shakin' his head right now.
so now we look like

Zetterberg --- Datsyuk --- Holmstrom

Franzen --- Filpulla --- Bertuzzi

Hudler--- Modano/ Abdelkader--- Cleary

Draper --- Helm --- Miller/ Eaves

Lidstrom --- Rafalski

Kronwall --- Stuart

Erricson --- TBD

Howard
Ozgood

Abdelkader/Miller/Draper will play musical healthy scratches throughout the year and will spell anyone who needs an injury rest. Detroit's 3rd line center is most definitely, on paper right now, only Mike Modano and nobody else. Jakub Kindl is the 6th d-man.

Not really sure why Tim Kennedy went to arbitration in the first place but whatever..

I'm really hoping the Wings start phasing out Draper. Realistically this is his last year anyway - especially if we do get a delayed/locked out season next year - so while not having him available hurts the PK a bit it's something we're going to need to get used to anyway... and in theory Abdelkader and Miller are supposed to be capable of replacing Draper and Maltby in the PK roles anyway, right?

While it annoyingly leaves an Abdelkader scratch I'd enjoy seeing the third and fourth lines as

Hudler/Modano/Clearly
Miller/Helm/Eaves

as that fourth line was excellent basically every time it was together last year, they've earned the right to stick together I think. As much as I hate Datsyuk and Zetterberg getting broken up this is a year I think it could really be considered, too, with how good Bert/Z/Fill were together last year (though a Homer/Datsyuk/Franzen line excites few). I always liked Franzen better with Zetterberg anyway so maybe so adjustment could be made there... no matter what the Wings do they'll get pretty good offense and defense from every line though, little adjustments from last year went a long way.

What worries me are the first and third defensive pairings, though. Raf and Lidstrom really started looking their age last year, and they're going to need to play more and better than last year to compensate for that third pairing. It'll be interesting to see what Kindl/Ericsson can do, hopefully they'll live up to potential but if not the Wings better get back to scoring four a game, because they might need them.

I would like to see D pairings of Lidstrom/Ericsson, Kronwall/Rafalski, Stuart/Kindl but that's just me..

Maybe this is too early, but I think we should really start discussing whether or not this year's fantasy league should be keeper or not (I mean last year I don't even think we got most of the responses until draft day). I for one approve of it (so long as we have more players rather than 2 per position).

I'm all for it, competing either way :) Joined a lots of Dynasty leagues aswell, so I'm sure to have alot of Fantasy Hockey this year.

Nope, the CBA prohibits it, which is rad considering the cap hit and all. They are meeting again soon, I suspect this front loading bullshit is going to be deemed illegal.
