The Everything NHL Thread

I hope everyone else is enjoying xX~_-FiShErWoOd-_~Xx together in Nashville as much as I am because I think this is probably the most amusing trade destination of all time.

I agreed with Morm until I read more closely but the conditional pick makes sense - it's a 2011 1st no matter what + a 2012 3rd only if Nashville makes it to round 2(which they've never done I believe) or a 2012 2nd if they make it to at least round 3(which I know they've never done). Most likely just paying a 1st and if Nashville gets into the second round the trade is more than worth it for them, anyway. The Predators have a pretty good system - talentwise this is good for them, it's Ottawa I'm not sure got enough value back if the Preds don't end up coughing a conditional pick.

The confusing part for me is that while the cost of acquiring him was reasonable, Fisher isn't exactly cheap - 4.2m is quite a bit for a guy who should probably be a second line center(hint: he won't be in Nashville). Considering that they have a hard time spending to the cap to begin with I'm not sure much sense this is going to make for the Preds economically...

This is good for Nashville short term, though. Good 2-way center on an underrated defensive team. If they're gonna try to turtle and choke their way through the playoffs again Fisher will help. Don't underestimate the Preds - they were closer to beating Chicago than anyone else last year and would have had a damn good shot at if they hadn't choked and allowed a shorty with a 1 goal lead on a PP for a major late in game... 5? i think it was. Don't expect that sort of meltdown from a Trotz team again.

The top 6 is still ugly though... erat fisher sullivan dumont honrqvist lombardi with potentially svatos or sk thrown in isnt exactly intimidating...

I'd say bring back the nords but the Avalanche actually retain the rights to that logo and name. So yeah.

?

I don't think this is how it works but I suppose I could be wrong. The Nordiques mascot (wearing the Nordiques jersey) has been used for more than 15 years in all sorts of events and I very much doubt the Avalanche gets money off Nordiques merchandise. The Expos mascot also ended up becoming the Canadiens' first mascot once the team left for Washington. I always thought the name and logo were owned by the NHL which would simply return it back.

That said, even if the Avalanche do own the logo and name, which frankly I doubt, I feel it shouldn't be hard to get the name back from them. The Avalanche never considered that its history started before the team got in Colorado.

The new Nordiques, although not technically the same franchise, would also still likely keep the same retired jerseys it had before the move, which the Avalanche isn't interested to use anyway.

And as a measure of revenge for moving to Colorado and winning a Stanley Cup their first year, the Nordiques will do the same on their own first year back!

The avalanche actually makes money on each nords thing sold, IIRC. A few years back my brother was trying to get a nords jersey (before the retro hype) and was told by several sellers that it couldn't happen as the av's wouldn't let the jerseys be made.

I know for a fact that Carolina retains the Whalers name and logo. So it wouldn't shock me at all, it's the same damn franchise- the owners bought the name and logo and then changed it but still legally own the trademarks. That's what we were told. Maybe things have changed?

I mean, Fisher is probably enjoying this move, as is Carrie Underwood. They are a little closer to warmth and country music so as a couple i am sure theyll be happy :)

Fisher was a staple in Ottawa, though I think he can fit in anywhere just because of how he plays the game. He is a pretty good player to watch, and always works hard. Personally, he wouldn't be a bad fit in Detroit for that reason, though Detroit has too many young players to spend that kind of money on him.

Sad to see Fisher and Beauchemin go, but I hope this leads into more big trades. I'm actually quite surprised that Nashville was willing to give up a first rounder for Fisher, I was expecting something like two seconds when I first heard "fisher to nashville in exchange for picks".

Oh my god pitts vs NYI! 2 line brawls, someone coming off the bench, 8-2 right now

MY GOD hockey is getting more violent

Don't look now but the Eastern Conference just caught a mild case of Western-Conference-Playoff-spot-battleitus.

Speaking of which..... If your name doesn't have the word "oilers" in it....

Also, Red Wings slaughtered Boston like an angry bear...

Three suspensions handed out as a result of the Isles-Pens game the other night. A 10-game suspension to Pittsburgh's Godard for coming off the bench, a 9-game suspension for the Isles' Gillies for elbowing and punching of the head, and a 4-game suspension to the Isles' Martin for punching an "unsuspecting" opponent in Maxim Talbot. Granted, the league didn't take any action on Talbot's dirty hit against Comeau (which Martin's fight was a retaliation for), but then again when you're the league's favorite team I guess you can afford to take some liberties every now and again. If it wasn't an automatic suspension I'd be surprised if Godard would have gotten anything at all...

I don't buy that the Pens receive a differerent treatment by the NHL both off and especially on the ice and every allusion to it annoys me greatly.

Kind of stupid how angry Limueaux got over the pens-islanders game, especially since his team has one of the dirtiest players in the league, Matt Cooke. Kind of hypocritical.

The pens aren't the only favorites, Vancouver almost always gets amazing calls. Toronto is an obvious, being able to wear their home jerseys away and vice versa (among other perks). Detroit is an obvious one as well, the way they get calls infuriates me.

Oh lets also not forget the hand holding Tampa Bay got in '04 when the flames won the championship but the cup went to Tampa.

Orr is a pretty hard name to screw up, there isn't even a L, e, m, i, e, u OR x in it

Morm, I know I've said this a few times now, but I love you as much as a straight man can plus one.

Vincent, Matt Cooke is perhaps the dirtiest player in hockey, and to see the league look the other way most of the time he hits someone in the head or finds some other way to goon it up makes me believe that there is some preferential treatment going on.

edit: What the fuck, Isles. 16 goals in 2 games?

The league looks the other way every time something happens, no matter who is involved. Cooke is a piece of shit, but to single him out as escaping proper punishment is giving the NHL disciplinarians WAYYYY too much credit.

I would expect the next penguin islanders game to be a solid goonfest. or Mario Le-whine will just play all his finesse guys so he can bitch again.

Also:
Can you stop posting ignorant stuff?

Can you stop being so opinionated and/or biased against me (considering others did the same thing?)

Also, to whoever called me an idiot for saying it was possible for Buffalo to claw back into the playoff race and do well w/out Derek Roy.... They've played 54 games and are 4 points out of a playoff spot (Carolina has played 57 games).

It certainly wasn't me, I've been trumpeting the Sabres ever since Miller came back from injury. Whoever called you an idiot is the idiot (assuming someone actually did).

And "Mario Le-whine"? Really? How mature.

Bias is one thing. Mentioning Datsyuk alongside Lemieux and Orr in a discussion of the all-time greatest players is quite another.

Canucks still rolling along despite the rash of injuries on their defense. Depth is wonderful.

Of course, he is a GM, yeah it is rough to watch that happen to your team, however, as a coach, as a player, as a member of any professional organization, you have to take what the league/committee/whatever decides is fair and work with it. Whining in the media isn't changing any of the decisions made. The only thing it may change in the future is that the NHL might be more afraid to do anything to Pittsburgh for fear of losing Lemieux, which is ridiculous.

What he did is equivalent to a player cussing out a ref for a bad call, it doesn't change the call, and usually makes the ref more inclined to penalize said player later in the game on calls that might be questionable at best. Granted I don't think the league will make emotional decisions like that given that they have time to think and cool off before they announce their decisions.

Yeah really, Pavel has no place in the same sentence as Mario and Colton...

On a serious note though, Mario needs to either unemploy Cooke or shut up already.
