The Everything NHL Thread

Yeah really, Pavel has no place in the same sentence as Mario and Colton...

On a serious note though, Mario needs to either unemploy Cooke or shut up already.
That's almost exactly it. You cannot whine in the media about those types of decisions when you have someone on your roster who actively tries to hurt people as well.

I will never ever say that it is okay for a player to fight a goalie, unless the goalie initiates it, however, there is no place for bitching, whining or complaining, when you are a professional of any sort. You roll with the punches, keep your mouth shut unless it is constructive, and better yourself.

Speaking of Toronto, they just acquired Philadelphia's 1st and 3rd round picks for Versteeg.

As if those picks won't be super late in the round...I don't like this trade one bit from a leafs perspective. For the flyers it's fantastic! I'm liking what Burke is doing with the leafs TBH, I hate that team and hope they bottom feed FOREVER.

Maybe Versteeg asked for a trade like Kessel did?

Holy shit i did not see this coming. i don't necessarily like how this stacks up, i though Versteeg would be a big part of our future.

OMG, this is stupid as hell. ALTHOUGH he hasn't been producing like they expected and are rebuilding similairily (O_O) to the jays. excuse my ignorance but any details on how long they had versteeg anyways ?

the Blackhawks dealt Versteeg to Toronto last offseason in exchange for Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico and Phillippe Paradis.

Toronto is using a strategy similar to calgary- take someone that has some value, trade it for peanuts and then give the peanuts away.

This is something I'll be checking two times per day til the deadline hits.

Except the Leafs are getting 2 draft picks in return, so they are trying to make up for the Kessel trade, one of the worst in NHL history.

yes but as morm pointed out the flyers are pretty good so the picks will end up late in the round. leafs are in the middle this year (sort of) so their picks won't be as early. kessel trade i wouldn't say the absolute worst it's just a matter of is kessel>seguin.

Better than no picks at all. And its not just Seguin, Boston will be picking in the top five again this year. Right now Toronto is 5th and will only get worse if they continue to sell and the Devils and Isles keep winning.

Kessel apparently keeps asking for a trade, so that might actually be the worst trade in history especially with how talent rich this years draft is apparently going to be.

The return for Versteeg isn't as bad as people think. Sure we probably could've gotten more, but Versteeg was going to be gone sooner or later (he didn't fit in with the top 2 lines, so paying 3+ mill for a 3rd liner...yaaa). I kind of wish it was the rumored JVR coming to Toronto, but that's just my inner dumbass Leaf Fan thinking.

Wow...Colorado is pretty much selling come the deadline! What the hell...3 Goalie changes? Jesus...Gaunce is hurt too. Man, Colorado is BLEEDING points. Goes to show that it was Anderson's play last year that really impacted things.

Meanwhile, Tanguay is still out for Calgary and Jokinen left the game with a knee injury. Jackman, who has actually been awesome lately, is down as well. The flames simply don't have the depth up front, I expect them to go after a winger in the coming weeks at the expense of defense. I don't get this though: Kiprusoff's 11th straight start so with 6:22 left in the third they pull him to rest up a bit. Though, really, why the fuck would you START kipper? I guess the playoff run but jesus it's Colorado, 9-1...you'd think Karlsson woulda got the nod.

He was listed as probable for the game but the announcers said he wasn't skating. I didn't see him out there, but I wasn't really paying attention after goal 3.

The point still stands about them likely going after a winger and HOPEFULLY going after an ACTUAL fucking center.

To be fair, it's Anderon's play this year is part of the reason they're doing so bad lol

On October 16, 1989 the Toronto Maple Leafs traded their 3rd overall pick to the New Jersey Devils for Tom Kurvers. The 3rd pick ended up being Scott Niedermayer. This says hi.

On August 9, 1988 the Edmonton Oilers trade Wayne Gretzky, Mike Krushelnyski and Marty McSorley to the Los Angeles Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, a 1st round pick in 1989 (Jason Miller), 1st round pick in 1991 (Martin Rucinsky), a 1st round pick in 1993 (Nick Stajduhar) and about 15 million in cash. So does this.

On June 30, 1992 the Philadelphia Flyers traded Chris Simon, Mike Ricci, Kerry Huffman, Ron Hextall, Steve Duchesne, Peter Forsberg, 1st round pick in 1993 (Adam Deadmarsh), 1st round pick in 1994 (Wade Belak), future considerations and cash to the Quebec Nordiques for Eric Lindros This.

On June 23, 2001 the New York Islander trade Bill Muckalt, Zdeno Chara and a 1st round pick (turned out to be Jason Spezza) to the Ottawa Senators for Alexei Yashin And espescially this.

Sure Kessel hasn't produced yet but he is young and can easily produce 30+ goals a year. Tyler Seguin has yet to prove himself, the list of 1st round flameouts is ridiculously long. At the moment the trade hasn't worked out well but in no way does it deserve to be mentioned anyway near the ones listed above.

Further, trades should not be judged based on how they turned out on future years. In the Cam Neely for Barry Pederson trade, the Canucks were acquiring a center who (iirc) had scored 126 goals over the past 5 years in exchange for a player who was undersized and appeared to lack upside. Now obviously Pederson flamed out while Neely became one of the games greats but at the time it was not at all a bad trade for the Canucks.

Atlanta extends Big Buff for another 5 years with a $26 million deal. That's a cap hit of $5.2 per season. Seems a tad high but they definitely need to start building a new face and foundation for the franchise by locking up some key, identifiable, younger players. Just need to make sure Enstrom stays a Thrasher as long as Byfuglien is around...

Also, I love the Versteeg deal for Philly, though it makes sense for both sides. Flyers add another interchangeable forward for the top 9.. one that helped win a cup in this kind of role already.. and Toronto cuts their losses with someone who clearly wasn't fitting and gains some draft picks. Flyers win the deal but the Leafs weren't fleeced or anything.

another thing is that versteeg's contract ended this year and probably wouldn't have come back so i guess the deal's not bad after all. the only question about the deal is if they were going to make a run for the playoffs, however the beauchemin deal showed prob not (although adding lupul gave the leafs some hope)?

Naw, toronto is still full swing in rebuild mode. I don't expect them to make it next year, either, unless they somehow pull a beast of a draft pick from phillie's number 1 or they make some really good deals in the off season.

Versteeg has one more year at ~$3 mil before he goes RFA. I think both teams were more willing to make a deal because of this fact.

Lets also not discount the fact that Burke doesn't want people that don't wanna be there and Versteeg apparently asked for a trade.
