The Everything NHL Thread

It was nice to see the Hurricanes FINALLY beat the Flyers. I guess the Brind'Amour speech fired the team up. Cole deservingly scored the game winner. Lately he is looking just like he did when he was younger and helped carry the team to the SCF in 2002. He is skating extremely fast and playing a good physical game.

Ignoring for a moment how badly the avs/blues trade hurts me in fantasy, I'm just going to enjoy how bad that trade is by the avs. A mediocre forward and a highly overrated defenseman who's biggest accomplishment is having a dumber injury than the sakic in snowblower thing a couple years ago for what should be their teams #1 d prospect and the guy who has looked like he would have been their perennial leading goalscorer. They traded a shiny charizard for an energy card im pretty sure.

Well I do agree its a stupid trade by the Avs, Johnson is still only 22 (same age as Shattenkirk) so I wouldnt call him overrated just yet.

i'm really bad at reading lips what is he saying??

shocked to see that blues/avs trade this morning... really, odd.

Maybe Colorado will pick him up...who knows, someone will, for half the price hes a good player. The only trick is making him want to play..

SOMEHOW the flames came out of being 4 games played more than virtually everyone they are chasing and being chased by and are in 9th, tied for points with 6th-8th while Dallas continues to tailspin out of playoffs.

MAN this shit in the west keeps getting more intense

I just want to followup on something they said on the hotstove - the NHL (or NBC or something, can't remember) apparently wants 5-6 outdoor games a season. I think that would really kill what makes the winter classic well classic (though you can argue if the same teams are going to be in it every year it's gonna be ruined anyway). Apparently it all comes down to the TV deal.

Well, the games would probably all sell out, and the TV ratings would be way up. I think a good mix would be 2 US and 1 Canadian outdoor game per year. One on January 1 like always, the Heritage Classic and then pick one, choose one, elsewhere.

I live in Calgary near McMahon stadium (where the game is taking place). I can tell you that some teams CAN'T host it, like Phoenix, whereas some teams struggle like Calgary did- cold weather here (-23C or so) cracked the ice to shit just 2 or 3 days before the game!

Honestly I dislike the idea of this. It's not that cold here, but SO MANY Calgarians learned their lesson about outdoor games with the -25C Stampeders game (including myself). It was MISERABLE. I dunno, from what I can tell you from the experiences here is that the game was actually almost cancelled or postponed or whatever due to the extreme cold fucking up the ice and posing a hazard to players and viewers alike...even -15 can be a real bitch to sit through, nevermind being soaked in sweat like a hockey player!

Having so many per year increases the odds of a logistical nightmare, it's not like baseball where you normally postpone a game so someone can go to the bathroom or heal a hang nail.

I am not looking forward to seeing ANYONE play in that ugly as fuck french fry jersey the flames are adorning. Meanwhile, Prices mask is priceless.

EVERYTHING in this league comes down to TV contracts- that's ultimately how they justify two teams in Florida, keeping Atlanta and not moving Phoenix if I recall. It's pathetic.

Another thing that occurs to me (which is kind of obvious and I feel stupid for not realizing this) is that the outdoor games can only really happen in the winter, so they'd be all bunched up. It might be cool to have 2 games in 1 day that are outdoor games. An early game (which I prefer), and a late game (which alot of people liked because it looked better) wouldn't be as bad as I initially thought. In any case, I hope the NHL doesn't screw it up.

Yeah, like I said earlier, I think there is a perfect number of outdoor games to keep the idea fresh and fun; that is 3.

Big win for the flames tonight. BIG win, and not just cause it was a home heritage classic game. I was worried the break they had and then playing on slow, brittle ice would ruin their groove of late...perhaps it still will. At least Dallas is still fucking up, so there is one extra spot in the playoffs about to come available!

Goligoski to the Stars for Neilson and Niskanen. Interesting trade.

Also, Hagman got waived, that's very interesting...

Hagman go waived? Flames are making room under the cap for something big, rumor is either richards or lecavalier, we shall see what happens I guess. Kind of Feaster to do it AFTER the heritage classic though, classy thing to do!

Goligoski for Niskanen is somewhat of a wash, but I have no idea why they threw Neal in the deal. Unless it was to free cap space for Richards.

I heard the Kings are trying to do something and the word that came into my mind was "Spezza" when i thought about this... I dunno, i heard they have alot of cap space.

I think when you're giving assets as valuable as Neal away for essentially nothing it is a sign either your team shouldn't exist or your owner doesn't have enough money to do his job properly. Good team gets better, tailspinning team gets worse. Even worse than the Stewart trade.

EDIT: Also as a guy who's eastern team is the caps i kinda feel like im caught with my dick in my hand here. Flyers, Bruins, Pens have been better than the Caps when healthy this year and now they've all added pretty significant pieces in a week. Come on GMGM. Hook me up.

Yah, I mean, Goligoski will probably be a bit better than Niskanen over the long haul, but thats assuming the stars keep him, and either way, there is no reason to give away one of your top forwards.

Hagman unclaimed

Makes me kinda sad- surely even at 3M/year SOMEONE woulda wanted him for a 6th round pick or something. I guess they have 30 days or 10 games (whichever comes first) to send him down to the AHL, so if a deal drops that needs salary space they at least have that option. This was clearly a move to get rid of a shitload of salary FAST...it makes it way less likely that there will be a big move coming for a center. That's the ONE piece that is missing for the Flames. I'm a little baffled by the lack of interest. The guy can actually put in like 25G/year he's just had a rough year. He is one of the hardest working flames, he takes the puck into the fucking zone (unlike most forwards these days) and holds it by fighting his little finnish heart out while his teammates switch. He has great position, he just keeps hitting posts and getting very unlucky. STUPID.

Spezza is getting a shitload of interest I hear, so is Richards. I think Pens will look to add one more winger before things are said and done to try to salvage the season plagued by injuries in the front, perhaps ridding themselves of a not so tasty pick.
