oh my god the sabres just bought someone who cost more than 2m at a trade deadline(Brad Boyes for a 2011 2nd)

quick justin! post your avatar!

(On a serious note this is another win for the Blues, A second rounder is more than nothing, which is what the Blues should have been willing to trade his sizable contract for considering that with Backes, Stewart, Steen, Oshie, and Berglund the RW/C positions in STL's top 2 lines have more than enough candidates and he's really not a line 3 guy. Still, potentially someone other than Vanek and the kids to score goals for Buffalo now, which could be nice for them if he pans out. But really, it's just nice to see Buffalo paying for someone reasonably expensive for once. They're always on the wrong side of these deals and they deserve better. The Sabres shouldn't have any cap issues with Boyes and he's only got one more year on his contract(and can presumably be resigned for less if it works out in Buffalo...) so this trade may be a win for both sides, really. If Boyes can even put in 25 or 30 next year both GMs are geniuses.)

that's more likely

loling at the fact carl is pretty much right

Boyes is not as ineffective as Cheechoo is by any stretch of the imagination, though. He's fallen off a bit since the 43 and 33 goal years, but his point totals those years (65 and 72) actually aren't that much higher than what he'd have this year on an "off year" (He has 41 in 62 right now, which prorates to a little over 54 points over the full year). He backchecks pretty well and is learning to be more of a passer, I don't think the downside on this one is that bad, really. I am, however, bored of Boyes already can something interesting happen now TIA.

EDIT: OH SPEAKING OF WHICH DALE TALLON DOING WORK

FLA to ATL: Dvorak + 5th
ATL to FLA: Bergfors + Rissmiller

I'm not that surprised to see Atlanta moving Bergfors with as much as he get scratched, but the guy has shown almost point per game potential when he's feeling it and the coach isn't benching him for his sketchy backchecking but man, he sure seems like the one asset in this deal that's really desirable.

EDIT2: just read dobber's analysis of the above deal, think this is a pretty good point:

dobber said:
Bergfors desperately needed a change of scenery and he got one. It's unfortunate that this is not a good fit for him. Peter DeBoer probably won't like him, if Craig Ramsay didn't like him. Remember - this is the team that waived Michael Grabner. The coach likes the grinders and not so much the skill. That being said, it is a new city and it can't be any worse than the old one.

If anyone can make Bergfors a better player, it's DeBoer. I'd really like to see the Panthers succeed, but I really didn't like some of their earlier moves (waiving Grabner, trading Frolik).

They already were (as are Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh), its just moreso the case now. I've also always really loved Lapierre, who joins back his coach in the Juniors. Canucks have my full support in the west.

At least those french heavy teams are all great teams, maybe we're doing something right!

SABRESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

First time in a playoff spot since the first week this season. Still haven't lost in regulation in the Pegula era.

Also rofl Rangers and Flyers. 4 goals for Callahan. Are the Flyers hitting that "we're a really good team" late-season rut, or are they just being exposed for shitty goaltending?

*Is still looking like a genius for saying the Sabres could make it without Derek Roy*

NJ deserves a playoff spot, would like to see the Red Wings look like a number 2 seed. This is gonna be a very exciting march in terms of NHL.

you might not see the red wings looking like a number 2 seed for much longer

At least it didn't take a frantic run for the Red Wings to reach 2nd place. They've sat in the top spots for all of the season, and their is a reason they weren't struggling just to make the playoffs a couple weeks back. Detroit hasn't lost 4 straight all season. For Chicago's sake, you best pray the Wings start playing a little inconsistent, 6 points are harder to overcome than you think.

the wings have been playing inconsistent for a while now. They were indisputably the best team in the first half of the season and now there are quite a few teams that could catch them. The hawks have 3 games remaining against the wings so there's 6 points right there, not to mention that the hawks have already taken 2 out of 3 and are playing far and away their best hockey of the season right now.

Since when is two a number associated with "quite a few"? You honestly think the Wings are gonna drop the next three meetings with Chicago? I'll believe that next time the Hawks beat the Florida panthers. You are quite overconfident.

Anyways, i did a lot of math work. Based on current trends in the eastern conference (Last 10s are usually accurate in the east for describing a team), this is what the final standings look like if every team continues to play the way they are... Of course that's never a guarantee, but i was bored and took the time to do it.

1. Boston Bruins- 109 Points, 50-23-9
2. Washington Capitals- 105 Points, 47-24-11
3. Philadelphia Flyers- 102 Points, 47-27-8
4. Montreal Canadiens- 100 Points, 46-28-8
5. Tampa Bay Lightning- 97 Points, 44-29-10
6. Pittsburgh Penguins- 96 Points, 43-29-10
7. New Jersey Devils- 95 Points, 45-32-5
8. New York Rangers- 90 Points, 42-34-6
-------
9. Buffalo Sabres- 90 Points , 40-32-10
10. Carolina Hurricanes- 89 Points, 39-32-11
11. Toronto Maple Leafs- 88 Points, 39-33-10
12. Atlanta Thrashers- 78 Points, 32-36-14
13. New York Islanders- 74 Points, 31-37-12
14. Ottawa Senators- 71 Points, 30-41-11
15. Florida Panthers- 70 Points, 29-41-12

I love how you waited until the Hawks lost to try and post that lmao, especially in what was essentially a fluke loss because Vokoun played out of his goddamn mind. But anyways, there are way more than two teams that could catch the wings right now. The 3-8 teams in the West right now all have legitimate shots. I didn't say anything about the Hawks taking all 3 games against the wings, but I was just saying that right there was 6 points so it's definitely not out of the question that they could catch them by the end of the season.
