the long overdue digimon thread

I've been in a mood to play the Digimon games lately with my anime watching. Trying to play 3 again but find gameplay horribly slow, I've beaten 1 soooo many times but might just have to fall back on it again (at least it has the blue MetalGreymom model iirc so I can roleplay Kiriha or something). I was going to buy Digimon World 2 since I never beat it as a kid but I couldn't find it cheaper than 50 bucks which I'm pretty sure I'm not going to pay... though I feel like I'll want it eventually and worry about the price going up even more. Maybe I'll just get Dusk/Dawn or something and use an extraneous Xros Wars character party set-up with Beelzemon and Apollomon and something -_-;

definitely get dusk/dawn. i felt dawn was pretty shitty compared to dusk. also eventually i ditch the main starter digimon because it only has one line of evolution and in a game where you spend lots of time degenerating it gets super boring.

i tried really hard to like dw2003 since it had a pretty good roster of digimon and it starts awesome but all the goddamn walking and grinding... ugh. still haven't finished it millions of years after buying it.

i'm trying to think of a cute mistranslation a la monster rancher 2 that we can both giggle about, but you're totally right, the game just isn't in english. it's in some awkward tongue, invented and forgotten during the translation process, meaning unable to break through the confines of what can only be called gibberish. nothing makes any sense.

quoth tanemon:

'rain plant fruit?
it grows here ever year on the 15th
you can use it
for what?'

betamon is great too. when you first meet him he says

'guru...
gururun...
something came to life!'

then once you've progressed to the point where he gets to relax in the central fountain, he imparts unto the player a lesson so important it transcends tautology: 'when youre comfortable it feels good'. uh, yeah, i -- i guess?

not to mention the even weirder pre-battle quotes from enemy digimon. it's just a completely different feel from other games with poor translations, you kind of get the impression that you are incapable of feeling whatever emotions these digimon have.

the later digimon world games just weren't as interesting in a sociolinguistic experiment sense. also the first game is fun in that it's the kind of game you can play fervently, get bored of a week later, and replay six months later with the same enthusiasm you once had. this cycle has lasted me over ten years with no signs of breaking.

ps cutest moment in video game history is when you kick ogremon out of whamon's cave and as he leaves in his submarine he shouts 'bye, dumb guys!'

man this post. is so great

i haven't played digimon world in a while so i can't really quote my favorite lines but the whole game was amazing because of this lol

The Official Digimon Adventure Set: The Complete First Season is due out October 9 from New Video Group. It appears to be this season's first legitimate DVD release. It's a bit pricey at $80 USD, but well worth it for something I've been waiting over ten years for. Myotismon and the Dark Masters are two of my favorite Digimon story arcs, so I'm pretty excited.

Anyone considering buying this?

Hopefully it's dual audio. As much nostalgia comes with the dub, it's borderline a gag dub. It's nice though seeing digimon getting a resurgence with re:digitized and this along with the announcement of a RPG of the first season being announced for the PSP less than a month ago.

only digimon thing i've ever liked is the playstation game "digimon rumble arena 2". kinda like a cool little smashbros for ps2, and it's actually kinda cute

The sky will be darkened by the wings of many bats.
The fallen people will invoke the name of the Undead Digimon King
And when the clock strikes the Hour of the Beast,
The Undead King will reveal himself in his true form, as the Beast.
Then angels will shoot arrows of Hope and Light at the loved ones of those they have been sent to protect
And a miracle will happen.

This, is the most wonderful prophecy in all of Digimon. This, is what made one feel like there was a chance. NEVER ignore these words, my fellow fans

Digimon dawn was my first game, and man, sweeping everything with megaseadramon brings back memories. The digimon world championship game where you train them in pens was a blast too. It went by so quickly!

Guess I should post this on this site too:

Since it was mentioned a few posts ago, Digimon Adventure 01 is finally getting a non-bootleg English DVD release next month. While you COULD pay the 80 bucks on Amazon, I imagine most of you would rather slum it up on Wal-Mart with me for less than half the price: http://www.walmart.com/ip/21678194

Doublepost go!

Actually aside from me just providing articles about the new Digimon game that's coming out, I have a trailer for you.

It even has a nice bonus at the end as it will most likely have Bokura no War Game in it too. (Bokura no War Game is that second part of that Frankenstien abomination called Digimon: The Movie)
