The Tennis Thread

Unsurprising really, considering that both clay is Nadal's specialty, and the fact he's won it almost every year except a few. I was hoping Soderling would find a way to beat him to win personally.

I still think he does, he still has at least 1 or 2 good years left and I think he's got a great chance to win Wimbledon which would put him right back at no.1

Although Nadal is on top form atm so who knows

Uh...Federer can still very easily regain No. 1; Nadal can barely compete with him on any surface besides clay, which is Federer's one weakness (really, if any). Flip the page around with Federer using grass (his premiere surface) against Nadal, and you get a whole different story. I'm personally counting on Federer to win both Wimbeldon and the US Open handily, and maybe for Nadal to wuss out due to injury or whatever again.

Nadal is not a wuss. But I personally want Federer to win both the US and Wimbledon to get his confidence back. Next year, I want to see him complete a Grand Slam. I seriously doubt that his days of tennis are anywhere near over. Wasn't Agassi still going at 34?

I am a huge Federer fan, but as long as Nadal stays healthy, there is no way Federer is beating Nadal head to head at any Major except possibly the US Open, that is if Nadal ever makes his way to the final.

Federer for the next few years will continue to post good Slam results but I would not expect too much out of him outside of that, maybe Halle or Basel but that's about it. Unless Nadal's knees get bad again, I do not think Federer will reach #1 again and ironically Sampras's record would stay in tact.

Anyone who says Federer will blast a healthy Nadal at Wimbledon is pretty full of themselves... how could anyone forget the 08 final. Granted Nadal was playing the best of his life, but Federer is 2 years older and Nadal is in top form.

Wimbledon will be interesting... I would enjoy another Soderling vs Nadal/Fed match if it happens. Roddick could also be a factor like last year, and Murray is always in the hunt. The only person I see Nadal losing to here would be an in form Roddick but I don't think he will be as good this year.

guess who's back

Wimbledon draws have been released.

At a glance:
Federer's road to the semi's should be extremely easy. The other highest seed in his quarter (Davydenko) is coming off of an injury and plays terrible on grass. Expect a Quarterfinal match against always solid (12) Tomas Berdych.

In the semi's Federer could face Djokovic, Roddick, or Hewitt. Roddick is most likely but after a lot of time taken off in the clay season it remains to be seen if Roddick can gain his early year form. Hewitt is interesting choice. I expect him to beat Djokovic in the Round of 16 match.

Murray has a fairly easy quarter with the highest seed being Verdasco. If he does not make the semis it will be a massive disappointment.

Now for Rafael Nadal, how does this tournament lineup sound?
Round 128: Kei Nishikori
Round 64: James Blake
Round 32: Ernests Gulbis (27)
Round 16: John Isner (23)
Quarterfinals: Robin Soderling (6)
Semi-finals: Andy Murray (4)
Finals: Roger Federer (1)

That is a really daunting potential tournament for Nadal. Gulbis, Isner, and Soderling all in a row will be tough as they all crush the ball and have huge serves. He might not have anything left for Murray's style of game in the Semifinals.

Honestly the way the draw came out, I would give the edge to Murray and Federer to make the finals, but with the way Nadal plays and how unlikely it is that his draw will unfold like that, Nadal will probably win Wimbledon anyway.

Hewitt is the darkhorse but he would have to get past Djokovic, Roddick, Federer, and Nadal/Murray potentially so he probably will not advance too far into the tournament.

Should be very exciting. I hope Nadal / Soderling happens in the Quarterfinals.

Bye bye Nadal! :D

I'm rooting for Roddick, even if odds say he's likely going out early. Otherwise, probably Federer/Murray finals.

Damn, Wimbledon is just around the corner, and during the world cup also?

It'll be almost impossible for me to watch the games, but as always, I'll be hoping Federer can get another Slam.

I also hope Thomaz Bellucci can surprise the world again, and gain a few more positions.

Yeah im hoping Federer can retain his title aswell, although it wont be easy with Nadal back and in top form.

I personally think Federer vs Roddick would both get to the final, but obviously now that cant happen, so either Federer vs Nadal (the obvious) or if Soderling can up his game on grass then Federer vs Soderling maybe

Isner won't even make it past Mahut, let alone make it to round 4. Nadal has a cakewalk until the quarterfinals vs Soderling, Gulbis can put up a fight in round 3, but Nadal will be fine, I think this is his tournament to lose. Federer seems to be in shock and I don't think he will be all there, not to mention the potential Federer vs Roddick match that will exhaust whoever comes out on top, while Nadal will cruise to the finals.

The women's draw looks fun, the Clijsters quarter is brutal and the potential Clijsters-Henin match should be fun. Shame Makiri is stuck in that quarter because even if she pulls it out vs Clijsters, she gets Henin the next round. The women's draw has some great potential matches, like Serena-Masha and Azarenka-Wozniacki, should be a good tournament.

Safina pulls out of wimbledon, just thought i'd add

I hope Wozniacki wins the womans tour, but it'll probably be one of the Williams' sisters; they're monster on grass

LETS GO WOZNIACKI

i agree that Federer has been low on form lately and i'm no fan of his, but this IS wimbledon and i wasn't at all imressed by Roddick at the AEGON championships. Also, i doubt that Roddick will even reach the semis. He's probly got Llodra in the 2nd round and given the form he showed in last week he's got a decent chance at an upset. there's also a number of other decent grasscourt players in his quarter of the draw. Fed's draw is a cakewalk unless Tipsarevic or Clement are in the form of their lives. Considering Tip/vic's performance in the final last week i can't see him doing much even though i'm a big fan.
I think you pretty much have Nadal's draw covered. However, considering what happened two weeks ago to to all the favorites for wimbledon i think an outsider could walk away with it this year or at least reach the final.

Gulbis withdrew and Petzschner will take his place, so Nadal's draw just got that much more easier.

Safina withdrew and Oudin will take her place in that seed, I don't think it matters much because either would've lost to Venus, though I don't see Oudin beating Groth.

I've said this multiple times (not on this forum), that Federer's draw is actually quite tough, the potential first 4 rounds of players aren't that bad, and its not like Falla is awful on grass. Should Federer lose this, I think we're looking at a Roddick/Nadal final, and this really becomes Nadal's tournament to lose with his biggest opposition out of the way.

In other news, Makiri loses the first set big and comes back to win the match, good for her.

Thats that then, Federer wins in 5 sets, and took the last set 6-0

He was actually a break down in the 3rd and it couldve turned out to be a huuuge upset, but damn good comeback

Good to see Fed pull it out, tournament quality would've dropped big time, though I would've liked to see all the articles claiming he was done.

Currently watching Davydenko vs Anderson, turning out to be quite the epic match, no one can break in the final set and its already been going on for over 4 hours.
