The Tennis Thread

With the amount of records the Fed breaks he'll likely be a big name in tennis history even if he quit after this year.

i'm a huge fed fan but del potro played very well aainst nadal, this is going to be an intense match, i predict at least 4 sets.

oh and yeah this shot was fucking amazing *_*

Wow, I'm extremely suprised that Federer lost, I had no doubt Federer would win. Well done to Del Potro though, he's improving alot.

If Del Potro can lift his Clay court game, I think he has a really good future.

I really thought Federer would win this though.

the french open plays very fast nowadays (see: soderling's victory over nadal, soderling's victory over davydenko). the fact that four attacking players made the semifinals last year (soderling, gonzalez, del potro, federer) is very foreshadowing of things to come. del potro's biggest task at the moment is coping with the pressure of being a slam champion.

shame he's not playing in sydney (he withdrew from auckland as sydney offered him more money, but ultimately decided to play in kooyong as a replacement for baghdatis). he'd have drawn quite the crowd.

i was heartbroken seeing my baby sesil lose to justine tonight but it was inevitable... don't see anyone stopping her from this title; even clijsters.

Sesil deserved to lose........... oh wait I better not say that here. Yeah, in Brisbane I think Henin and Roddick will win the women and mens respectively. In the Hopman Cup it looks as if Spain and Great Britain will go through and Australia will have to do something extraodinary to make it through by beating Spain 3-0. (Fingers crossed Australia's win vs Pakistan in Cricket has given me hope)

you leave my baby girl alone.. she had to go through an abortion and a drug ban!!! CMON SESIL!!!!!!

australia has been so lackluster in the tennis so far this season

Fed lost to Davydenko yesterday, I think, in Qatar. THE RAGE. I wonder if he is declining. He looked not in top form for 2008 and I think in 2009 too (despite all the records) I hope Nadal does well though.

Epic 2nd round Australian Open match today, Justine Henin defeating Elena Dementieva 7-5 7-6 in 2 hr 50 min. Best women's match I've seen in a long long time.

Firstly, MY BABY TOMIC may have lost a marathon, but it definitely won Australia's hearts...

I agree with the above post. Both played EXCELLENTLY. I haven't been so absorbed by a tennis match in a while. Honestly though, this match demonstrates that Henin isn't one to be overlooked. She defeated Dementieva at her peak basically, and in straight sets. Also, Henin through to the 4th Round. I'm really hoping she pulls a Clijsters and wins the Grand Slam.

That being said, I also happened to witness one of the worst women's matches in a long time as well. Petrova upsetting Kim Clijsters by winning 6-0, 6-1 is an indication of how horrid the match was for Kim. It was incredibly lopsided, Petrova playing like a goddamn machine while Clijsters struggling to keep the ball within the court - compare Clijsters' 26 unforced errors to Petrova's 10, and Clijsters' 5 winners to Petrova's 15. Horrible. I wanted Clijsters to win so badly, but I knew it was over at 6-0, 3-0.

Now watching: Nadal vs. Kolschreiber. Really hoping Kolschreiber wins just because I like him and don't really care for Nadal.

Also tomorrow night will probably pretty great. Lleyton Hewitt vs. Marcos Baghdatis rematch from back in 2008, when their match lasted for 5 goddamn hours. Honestly, Marcos Baghdatis is probably my favourite men player on the tour, but I have to be patriotic and root for Hewitt. It'll be fun watching a bubbly, cheery Baghdatis and his crowd.

YES!

I originally thought Clijsters' loss to Petrova was just a fluke, but after her victory over Kuznetsova, it appears that Petrova is back at the top of her game. She has been very strong in all 4 of her matches so far. If she can make it past Henin in the quarters, I think she could have a real shot at winning the tournament. She has a very difficult match ahead of her, but I think she just might be able to pull it off.

I was actually a little surprised by the difficulty of Henin's matches so far. The second round match against Dementieva was expected to be like that, but since then she's had to play two three set matches. She had to come back from a set down in the Kleybanova match, and the one yesterday against Yanina Wickmayer was just beautiful to watch. Wickmayer gave Henin quite a match. After making the semis at the US Open, it seems Wickmayer has gained some confidence, and it has helped her game immensely. If she continues with the kind of quality tennis she played against Justine, Wickmayer will be a very strong contender in women's play in the coming years.

Im happy roger won, hope he keeps winning slams :). although, i felt bad for Murray, i bet he feels horrible since he let not only himself but Britain down

Sony Ericsson Open began recently, and things are looking pretty interesting!

Not so much for men's matches so far, considering they've barely started. I guess James Blake winning a match could count for something...

Women's early rounds in big tournaments like this are more interesting due to the large amount of comebacks from past notable players... or attempts anyway.

I was hoping great things for Kimiko Date Krumm. For those of you who has never heard of her, she was a once World Number 4 player in the WTA during the time when Steffi Graf dominated women's tennis, so I guess she was overshadowed mostly by Steffi Graf. She retired in 1996 only to come back recently in 2008 to be rather successful, reaching a current ranking of World No. 64.
R1: K Date Krumm (JPN) d A Chakvetadze (RUS) 75 36 64
R2: [16] N Petrova (RUS) d K Date Krumm (JPN) 63 76(7)
Obviously she can still hold her own, forcing Petrova into a tie break in the second set.

Also, with Henin winning her first round ([WC] J Henin (BEL) d J Craybas (USA) 62 62), she will face Dementieva for their first rematch since R2 of the Australian Open, which was an AMAZING match. Hoping Dementieva can win (she still needs to stop choking and win a few Grand Slams already).

Also after what was a great run for Alicia Molik (former World No. 8 before retirement) at the Indian Wells, her game seems to have slipped once again. She was delivered a double bagel in R2. :[
[27] A Szavay (HUN) d [WC] A Molik (AUS) 60 60
