Mega Gallade

Gallade @ Galladite
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Close Combat
- Zen Headbutt
- Knock Off

Pretty simple, can 2HKO Magearna with unboosted Close Combat and 2HKO Toxapex with Zen Headbutt. And after a Swords Dance boost, it obliterates them. After a Close Combat, Flash Cannon can 2HKO Mega Gallade, so trying to get a Swords Dance boost is highly desired.

252 Atk Gallade-Mega Zen Headbutt vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Toxapex: 186-218 (61.3 - 71.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
+2 252 Atk Gallade-Mega Zen Headbutt vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Toxapex: 368-434 (121.4 - 143.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0 SpA Magearna Flash Cannon vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Gallade-Mega: 96-114 (34.6 - 41.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 Atk Gallade-Mega Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Magearna: 204-240 (56.1 - 66.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Gallade-Mega Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Magearna: 405-477 (111.5 - 131.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

what is that Pex spread
The spread on Toxapex is to avoid an OHKO from +1 Outrage from Mega Charizard X after Stealth Rock damage. It also avoids getting OHKOed by Mega Medicham's Zen Headbutt from full, which is really nice on the type of teams that this core is often run on. I find the Special Defense investment often redundant because Toxapex is still an adequate Ash-Greninja check.

reserving Heatran

Heatran @ Firium Z
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock

252+ SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 248 HP / 232+ SpD Magearna: 236-282 (65 - 77.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery and trapping damage
252+ SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 156+ SpD Toxapex: 130-154 (42.9 - 50.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery

0 SpA Magearna Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 61-72 (18.8 - 22.2%) -- possible 5HKO
0 SpA Toxapex Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 102-120 (31.5 - 37.1%) -- 70.7% chance to 3HKO

Z-Heatran is always difficult to manage for defensive teams. For example, he can trap Toxapex easily and inflict massive damage to Magearna.

Victini @ Choice Band
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- V-create
- Bolt Strike
- U-turn
- Zen Headbutt

This thing just hits too damn hard for those two to keep up. Gear is hit with massive overkill damage on V-create, while pex is OHKO'd by bolt strike and zen headbutt in their respective terrains, and 2HKO'd otherwise. Simply pair it with a koko that gets walled by gear, u-turn out of said gear into vic, and it becomes a guessing game for your opponent whether you V-create or bolt strike.

0 SpA Magearna Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Victini in Electric Terrain: 95-112 (27.8 - 32.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Victini V-create vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Magearna: 636-750 (175.2 - 206.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Victini Bolt Strike vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Magearna in Electric Terrain: 230-271 (63.3 - 74.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Toxapex Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Victini: 104-126 (30.4 - 36.9%) -- 59.1% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Victini Bolt Strike vs. 248 HP / 104+ Def Toxapex: 208-246 (68.6 - 81.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
252 Atk Choice Band Victini Bolt Strike vs. 252 HP / 104+ Def Toxapex in Electric Terrain: 312-368 (102.6 - 121%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Victini Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 104+ Def Toxapex in Psychic Terrain: 288-342 (94.7 - 112.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery

Tapu Koko @ Electrium Z
Jolly Nature
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- Wild Charge
- Brave Bird
- Taunt
- U-turn

Z Wild Charge Koko destroys this core since it attacks their overall weaker defensive stat. The cool thing about this set is that it can lure in Magearna and has a good chance to OHKO with Gigavolt Havoc if rocks are up. It can also 2HKO after rocks damage with a Wild Charge if it already used it's Z crystal.

252 Atk Tapu Koko Wild Charge vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Magearna in Electric Terrain: 177-208 (48.7 - 57.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Pex always gets OHKOed by Gigavolt Havoc and is 2HKOed Wild Charge. This set does have to watch out for burns though since it is fully invested in Physical attack.

What does this accomplish though? A Haze on Charizard and a possible burn on Medicham or a toxic/ Toxic Spikes? I just feel there are better answers than Toxapex for those pokes and other spreads make better use of it's stats. i may be wrong, though

Edit: Forgot to add leftovers on Mag but it still has a high chance to 2HKO with Wild Charge (93%)

Mega Swampert
Rich (BB code):

Swampert-Mega
Adamant Nature
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch
- Stealth Rock
Mega Swampert does large amounts of damage with earthquake to both targets, having a chance to OHKO Magearna from full and guaranteed after rocks. It 2HKOs Pex,(and has a chance to OHKO after rocks, albeit out of Pert's favour) but Swampert must be careful as it dislikes a scald burn or being poisoned. Additionally, Swampert can block Magearna's volt switch to prevent it from gaining momentum.

252+ Atk Swampert-Mega Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 104+ Def Toxapex: 236-278 (77.6 - 91.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
252+ Atk Swampert-Mega Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 104+ Def Toxapex: 236-278 (77.6 - 91.4%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
252+ Atk Swampert-Mega Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Magearna: 344-408 (94.7 - 112.3%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Swampert-Mega Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Magearna: 344-408 (94.7 - 112.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Garchomp @ Garchompite
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock

I'm posting the mixed SR set over the SD set because SD MegaChomp is probably too close to SD Z Chomp, but this thing doesn't really need Attack investment to splatter anything with a weakness to Earthquake.

4 Atk Garchomp-Mega Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Magearna: 300-354 (82.6 - 97.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (25% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock)
4 Atk Sand Force Garchomp-Mega Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 28 Def Magearna in Sand: 386-456 (106.3 - 125.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

4 Atk Garchomp-Mega Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 104 Def Toxapex: 222-264 (73.2 - 87.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
4 Atk Sand Force Garchomp-Mega Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 104 Def Toxapex in Sand: 288-342 (95 - 112.8%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after sandstorm damage and Black Sludge recovery (guaranteed after Stealth Rock)

BSS Circuit Co-host
Its been a while since this mon had the ability to do anything in OU, but that Magearna set definitely opens up some real holes for this mon to exploit.

Marowak-Alola @ Thick Club
Ability: Lightning Rod/Rock Head
EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shadow Bone
- Fire Punch/Flare Blitz
- Stealth Rock
- Bonemerang

This guy does a lot to make Magearna sets miserable. He gets up rocks anytime Magearna touches the field, or strikes lethally. He also gets easy 2hkos on pex, has good switch in deterrent power, and outspeeds the slow mons in the tier. Losing to Mawile sucks, but hey, which mons don't lose to it nowadays... Alolan Whack is bad, but he seems good in this situation.

Highlights

Threat of the Round:

: Gliscor usually isn't bothered by burns from Toxapex as long as it activates its Toxic Orb first and it switches into Magearna pretty well, often being able to make progress in the process.

Additional Notes:

None, good job everyone!

Round 62 Core: Rotom-W + Heatran

Rotom-Wash @ Wiki Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 Spe
Bold Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Pain Split
- Defog / Will-O-Wisp

Heatran @ Firium Z
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock / Toxic

  • Rotom-W and Heatran form a solid core for bulky offensive teams. Rotom-W is capable of handling Ground-types, which tend to bother Heatran and can pivot it into play with Volt Switch. This synergy is especially notable when you realize that Rotom-W tends to draw in bulky Grass-types, which Heatran easily takes advantage of.
  • Try to post only OU viable Pokémon and don't post sets specifically for this core, additionally your threat should not be complete deadweight against teams that do not feature the core of Rotom-W + Heatran. Everyone have a good day!

Kartana @ Normalium Z
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Leaf Blade
- Sacred Sword
- Giga Impact

Kartana OHKOs Rotom with Leaf Blade and Heatran with Sacred Sword, due to Heatran having no HP investment, while outspeeding both. However, it cannot come in on either of them.

Lele absolutely annihilates this core. +1 Psychic 2hkoes Tran most of the time, but you can just AOP that away. Meanwhile, Rotom is ohkoed by +1 Psychic. Lele cannot switch on either of these two without proper prediction, but that goes for any offensive counterplay.

Gastrodon

250px-423Gastrodon.png
Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Scald
- Recover
- Toxic
- Earthquake

Gastrodon blocks anything Rotom Wash goes for as it is immune to its electric type attacks and can just storm drain up the Hydros from Washtom.
The only thing Rotom-Wash can go for is burning Gastrodon, other than that Gastrodon completly walls Rotom-Wash and can just Toxic it and whittle it down via the Toxic turns.

Heatran won't do too much to Gastrodon and the Slug is fearsome for Heatran as Heatran hates being Earthquaked and also Scald does a decent amount to Heatran.

Calcs:
252+ SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 73-87 (22.8 - 27.1%) -- 0% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock, Leftovers recovery, and trapping damage
252+ SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 89-105 (27.8 - 32.8%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Heatran Inferno Overdrive (180 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 132-156 (41.2 - 48.7%) -- 13.7% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Gastrodon Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 152-182 (69.7 - 83.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
0 Atk Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 352-420 (161.4 - 192.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk burned Gastrodon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 176-210 (80.7 - 96.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

SubSeed Serperior

Serperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 56 HP / 200 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power Fire / Glare
- Substitute
- Leech Seed

HP investment prevents Rotom's Hydro Pump from breaking the substitute, where Serp can just start chipping away at Heatran with Leech Seed, forcing it to use Taunt and guaranteeing 24% chip, or more if it chooses to Magma Storm early allowing Serp to Sub again . Glare can be used instead of HP Fire for some extra cheese vs Heatran, but losing to Ferro/Sciz/Kart sucks, and these mons are often paired with Rotom-Tran.

Gyarados-Mega @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Crunch
- Dragon Dance
- Substitute

Love Mega Gyarados for this core. Mold Breaker lets it smack Rotom-W for supereffective damage that has a 25% chance to KO without rocks at +1 (see calcs). Sub versus Heatran prevents Toxic, and pre-mega it resists or is immune to the coverage Heatran runs. From Rotom-W it obviously fears Volt Switch but isn't too fussed by the other moves, resisting Hydro Pump and being able to sub freely versus expected Will-o-Miss. Behind a sub it can freely get to +1 and run through this core.

+1 252 Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 200+ Def Rotom-Wash: 268-316 (88.1 - 103.9%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
+1 252 Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 200+ Def Rotom-Wash: 268-316 (88.1 - 103.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

+1 252 Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 704-832 (217.9 - 257.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 472-556 (146.1 - 172.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Kommo-o @ Kommonium Z
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Clanging Scales
- Close Combat
- Poison Jab

  • Rotom-W upon switch-in
    • 0 SpA Rotom-Wash Hydro Pump vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Kommo-o: 59-70 (20.2 - 23.9%) -- guaranteed 5HKO
    • 0 SpA Rotom-Wash Volt Switch vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Kommo-o: 38-45 (13 - 15.4%) -- possible 7HKO
      • While Defog and Will-O are interchangable on the set given, I generally assume most Rotom-W run Wisp to cripple checks. If it does have Wisp, which is worst case scenario, that's what I'm going to calc for. So, generally assume you'd get burned here instead.
  • Turn 1
    • 0 SpA Kommo-o Clangorous Soulblaze vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-Wash: 187-222 (61.5 - 73%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
    • 0 SpA Rotom-Wash Hydro Pump vs. +1 4 HP / 0 SpD Kommo-o: 39-47 (13.3 - 16%) -- possible 7HKO
    • 0 SpA Rotom-Wash Volt Switch vs. +1 4 HP / 0 SpD Kommo-o: 25-30 (8.5 - 10.2%) -- possibly the worst move ever
      • As you can see, Rotom cannot touch Kommo-o, and likely pivots into something that could, but such a mon doesn't exist in this core.
  • Heatran upon switch-in
    • 252+ SpA Heatran Inferno Overdrive (180 BP) vs. +1 4 HP / 0 SpD Kommo-o: 103-122 (35.2 - 41.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
      • Stealth Rock and Toxic are considered interchangable on the set given, which is worst case scenario and what I'll calc for.
  • Turn 1
    • 252 Atk Kommo-o Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 332-392 (102.7 - 121.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
      • You obviously OHKO Tran, so it isn't a threat. Best case scenario for the core beating you is to Toxic and maybe try stalling with Pain Split Rotom-W, which doesn't work when you get the Z-Move boosts
        • +1 0 SpA Kommo-o Clanging Scales vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-Wash: 168-198 (55.2 - 65.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Reserving the best Kyurem: regular Kyurem

Kyurem @ Metronome
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 56 HP / 200 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Ice Beam
- Earth Power
- Roost

Kyurem can switch into Rotom without any problem and kill him with some ice beam because rotom can't heal himself. Moreover, he outspeeds Heatran and OHKO him.
Finally, he can subtitute into both because rotom can't break the sub and heatran can't risk himself. And in OU, some teams are weak to the Ice/Ground combo, so against some teams, when kyurem is behind a subtitute, he will take a pokemon.

The standard Mega Alakazam set can switch into both Rotom and Heatran without much difficulty and proceed to break through them with Psychic and Focus Blast, respectively. Recover keeps Mega Alakazam healthy throughout the match to repeatedly threaten the core.

Offensive Stealth Rock Garchomp

Garchomp @ Rockium Z
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Swords Dance

Garchomp is a good offensive check for Heatran, being able to OHKO it with Earthquake and can come into Rotom-W's Volt Switch. After a SD boost, it can OHKO Rotom-W with Continental Crush

+2 252 Atk Garchomp Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 200+ Def Rotom-Wash: 280-330 (92.1 - 108.5%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 624-736 (193.1 - 227.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Guess I’ll reserve Grassium Heatran.

Heatran @ Grassium Z
Timid Nature
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Solar Beam
- Stealth Rock/Taunt

This set has fallen out of favor somewhat but with the rise of Tapu Fini and Rotom-W I'd argue that Grassium Heatran has a little more merit now than it used to. Timid is run so you can creep any Modest or Calm Heatran sets and rest assured your Bloom Doom will wreck Rotom-W no matter what. It also OHKOs standard Fini sets and when paired with its best friend Tapu Bulu the Z-move reaches astronomical levels of power and blows back basically anything that doesn't resist it so it isn't a gimmick specifically built to beat this core either.

Some calcs:

252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 376-444 (116.4 - 137.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Heatran Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-Wash: 392-462 (128.9 - 151.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

While Medicham has trouble switching in on will-o-wisp or inferno overdrive, once its in something will die to HJK, provided you don't miss. Though of course, Rotom can tank one from full, but not if you fake out first or chip it beforehand.

252 Atk Pure Power Medicham-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 200+ Def Rotom-Wash: 253-298 (83.2 - 98%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Back again is your friendly neighborhood Greninja, this time with Grassium Z! I usually use this set to lure in Gastrodon for shit like offensive Tapu Koko, Rotom-W, or some other mon that can go to town with it removed, but it also functions as an effective lure for Rotom-W, easily OHKOing it from full with Z Grass Knot while also hitting Heatran with Low Kick.

Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Focus Blast

- Recover

basically Alakazam can switch on both of them and CM up at least once before having to recover which enough to roll thrue the core, it's also good to note that if zam ain't harded on a move/come on defog/taunt/sr/fire move from heatran, he doesn't need to cm up to beat the core.

0 SpA Levitate Rotom-Wash Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Alakazam-Mega: 118-141 (47 - 56.1%) -- 78.5% chance to 2HKO
0 SpA Levitate Rotom-Wash Hydro Pump vs. +1 0 HP / 0 SpD Alakazam-Mega: 79-94 (31.4 - 37.4%) -- 87% chance to 3HKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Psychic vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-Wash: 174-205 (57.2 - 67.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Psychic vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-Wash: 261-307 (85.8 - 100.9%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252+ SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Alakazam-Mega: 104-123 (41.4 - 49%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. +1 0 HP / 0 SpD Alakazam-Mega: 69-82 (27.4 - 32.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 312-368 (96.5 - 113.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 466-550 (144.2 - 170.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Tho it's important to realise that to switch in on attacks, your alakazam needs to be already mega evolved. Switching onto Volt Switches can also prove to be annoying but won't forbade zam to beat the core.

Personnal suggestion: on such set you could cut zam speed to 407 which is the jump point right after 405 (lopunny's speed) and invest remaining Ev's in HP

Finally:
252+ SpA Heatran Inferno Overdrive (180 BP) vs. +1 4 HP / 0 SpD Kommo-o: 103-122 (35.2 - 41.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
I guess you meant:
252+ SpA Flash Fire Heatran Inferno Overdrive (180 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Kommo-o: 155-183 (53 - 62.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
Since kommo-o won't be at +1SpD on switch, don't know if it changes anything to your explanation tho.
