Top five bands?

i post in this thread a lot

you'd be surprised at how many people here actually listen to neutral milk hotel, actually.

There's actually someone else here who listens to Neutral Milk Hotel. LMAO.
let's not turn this into an 'obscure music' competition. and for god's sake, if you do, don't start it with a band that every indie kid and their mother has heard of

i hate rap and hip hop(so f***ing what!!!)

this strikes me as really, really ignorant.

those who dont know me may not expect it (after all, i dare you to find a guy with tighter pants than me!), but i absolutely adore hip-hop. hatred of an entire genre is more often than not solely out of ignorance and lack of experience (but then again, what hatred isnt?).

while i most certainly dont claim to like everything, i dont dislike any genres in particular, much less hate them. i dont see why anyone would, frankly. if you dont like hip hop because youre only exposed to mtv bullshit, then expand your horizons. you'll be thankful you did; i know i was.

theres TONS of bad hip-hop, but for fuck's sake dude, theres TONS of bad metal. ive been listening to deathcore/grind for ages now, but that doesnt leave me with enough biases to let me hate a certain type of music, or let me think that somehow metal manages to exist without having a ridiculous number of terrible bands making it. theres tons of bad everything, folks!

instead of hating on an entire genre, educate yourself.

i would win ~_~ oh wait no there is quite a bit of contention on this forum (FUCKED THE BM AND GOD. LIKING ANTICON), so maybe not. we should have an indie-off one of these days.

1) Led Zeppelin
2) The Beatles (and Paul McCartney when he went solo)
3) AC/DC
4) Queen
5) Lynyrd Skynyrd

Honorable Mentions: The Who, Aerosmith, Tenacious D, Pink Floyd, Neutral Milk Hotel, Jethro Tull, Smash Mouth, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Elton John.

My library totals to 3.5 gigs, so this obviously isn't everything I listen to. But it's what I enjoy the most. There's actually someone else here who listens to Neutral Milk Hotel. LMAO.

neutral milk hotel is probably one of the most-known of the more popular "indie" bands

Tenacious D kicks ass......more people sould listen to then...the movie was good too.....

hey homeslice, you didn't answer my question!

he wasn't.

you wanna fight, tough guy

hahaha yeah im sorry man, i went on a bit of a tangent you most likely didnt deserve. i just tire of the attitude wherein devotion to one genre means exclusion of certain others. most likely because i used to be of that mindset as well.

dont even get me fucking STARTED on 'i like everything except rap and country' people

Best classical composers:

Shostakovich
Kalinnikov
Saint-Saens
Tchaikovsky
J.S. Bach, Corelli, Beethoven, etc. etc. It's hard to decide on a fifth spot here.

also Bartok, Gorecki, Debussy, Tiersenn, Glass, Satie, Messiaen, Mahler... lots

and yeah, i know some are 20th century/minimalist.

According to what I've been listening to lately:
1. Velcra
2. Metallica
3. Nightwish
4. Within Temptation
5. Lacuna Coil

Overall, however:
1. Garbage
2. Rammstein
3. Within Temptation
4. Nightwish
5. Disturbed
Garbage has been the only real constant in my musical tastes - I love them as much as ever, while what other bands I listen to fluctuates quite a lot.

I'm shocked at how I hardly listen to System of a Down and Slipknot any more, considering how much I listened to them before. And before anyone starts bashing them, they're still good but my musical tastes have just changed to something those two bands don't offer.

I feel stupidly wapanese considering all of my favorite artists are Japanese!

Anyway

1. FictionJunction YUUKA/Yuki Kajiura
2. Core of Soul
3. Mr. Children
4. JAM Project
5. The Brilliant Green

My favourite bands are more what I really enjoy listening to currently, rather than my favourites of all time.

1. The Shins
2. !!!
3. The Rapture
4. The Decemberists
5. Love of Diagrams

Don't worry, good things come from Japan. Lulatone for instance :)

"also Bartok, Gorecki, Debussy, Tiersenn, Glass, Satie, Messiaen, Mahler... lots

Hey, modern music is awesome when you're in the mood for it, though, admittedly, it's not a frequent thing for me. Also, Bartok kicks insane amounts of ass.

Let's compromise: I'll write a larger list of the 'bands' I could not live without but bold the five that I love the most.

Death From Above 1979
Thrice
Thursday

Can I make love to you because of these three bands?

The first mention of Thrice that I've seen on this board and Stare At The Sun is such a killer of a song.

1. Tool - They're a dirty pleasure. Pretentious prog/rock all the way. >_>
2. Twista - Eh? He's an awesome rapper... Dogg?
3. Muse - Just awesome.
4. People In Planes - If you post too much then my head will explode.
5. Incubus - Completely forgot until m0nkfish mentioned them; got caught up in the first four. Love Fungus Amoungus (sp?) and A Crow Left of The Murder. Simply one of the most diverse bands to exist. Slightly let down by Light Grenades though.

What am i doing here?

1. Iron Maiden- Best metal I've ever heard. Though I am generally a whore for live albums anyway, Rock in Rio brings everything to the table from Iron Maiden to Fear of the Dark to The Clansmen, etc etc etc I could go on. Live After Death does the same thing, with a different mix. Also, I was lucky enough to witness a live show during the bit with Ozzfest being a dick to them, and they pulled through it like nobody's business. They put on a hell of a show. A++ would have their children if I was a woman.

2. Dio- Metal again. Started off as the frontman for Sabbath waaaay back when, and is still kicking ass to this day. Though I can't quote too much of him, you just cannot say anything bad about Holy Diver. Not to mention Rainbow in the Dark, Sign of the Southern Cross (from the Sabbath days), Heaven and Hell, and more. Going to see him perform in September on the Heaven and Hell tour, and I'm already mentally wetting myself.

3. Mindless Self Indulgence- Not metal! I don't really know what to call them. I'd say it's anti-pop/electronic? But anyways, the sound just kind of works for me. You'll Rebel To Anything and Frankenstein Girls are Strangely Sexy are the albums I'm most familiar with. The studio stuff is great, but the live action is where it's at with these ladies and gents. Jimmy Urine puts on a hell of a show, and so far every show I've been to of theirs involves someone getting their head shaved. That, and they basically make fun of the audience most of the time, since everyone is usually either a 13 year old boy/girl who is being made fun of, or the people who came to watch them get made fun of for being scene/whatever the hell they are. Going to see them again on the 24th, and it's sad that I'll have to sit through whoever the hell they're with. Try and see them when they're not touring with other bands, because they pick better openers themselves.

4. Arch Enemy- Continuing on the metal trend, I fell in love with Arch Enemy when I saw them second staging some tour that came around. With a rather dashing young lady putting a nice touch on boring growly metal, Arch Enemy has a sort of melodic side to some of their songs in my opinion. Great music to listen to when you're angry. The show was a bit cheesy, what with the token ARE YOU READY TO ROCK RAAAAAAARGH stuff but oh the music! Excellent stuff, would see again if I knew when the hell they were coming back. I'd suggest pretty much everything after Angela Gossow joined up, as I haven't listened to the before material- I'm afraid it won't live up to the standards I've got for them with her.

5. The Dresden Dolls- Described as "punk cabaret". Amanda Palmer sings and plays the piano while a dapper gent I can't remember the name of provides percussion. Sounds simple, yet they do quite a bit with it. Sadly, I'm pretty sure there are only two studio albums and one live album out, so there's not much to acquire. As far as I know, each member has been doing some solo work lately, so I'm not sure when they'll come around again to see live. Also, they did a cover of War Pigs. Love.

Honorable mention goes to Nine Inch Nails, Iced Earth, Rammstein, and Beck.

Can I make love to you because of these three bands?

The first mention of Thrice that I've seen on this board and Stare At The Sun is such a killer of a song.
The Artist In The Ambulance is one of my favourite albums of all time, I have actually got the shivers just thinking about it! Highlights are Melting Point of Wax, The Artist In The Ambulance, Paper Tigers, Cold Cash and Colder Hearts... Fuck I'm just listing every track on the album it is that good.

Also I was quite surprised to see nobody mentioning Incubus yet, although I suppose they didn't make my top 5. More of a band that is universally agreeable, I guess. If you go back far enough in their discography you WILL find something you like, they have been ridiculously diverse and still managed to maintain a constant high standard.

4. Arch Enemy

awesome, I didn't expect to see stuff like this. Arch Enemy is great, and yeah... their old stuff isn't great. Anthems of Rebellion is awesome though :)

1. Brand New
2. Say Anything
3. The Number 12 Looks Like You
4. Bear vs Shark
5. Explosions in the Sky

I'm kind of all over the place with this list. I guess that's because every year my taste in music keeps changing but I keep a favorite from my previous phaze. Anyway, that last slot is really hard to decide on because every time I think about something like this i have a different opinion on my 5th slot. It can range anywhere from The Blood Brothers to my guilty pleasure Yes, Virginia.

1: Emperor
2: Summoning
3: Burzum
4: Rhapsody
5: Nightwish

Honorable mentions:

Sonata Arctica
Nile
Opeth
Thy Majestie
Immortal
Darkthrone

According to what I've been listening to lately:
1. Velcra
2. Metallica
3. Nightwish
4. Within Temptation
5. Lacuna Coil

Fuck yeah! \m/ (sorry guys I just had to)

My top 5 bands of all-time is probably this:

1. Dream Theater
2. Nightwish
3. Porcupine Tree
4. Pink Floyd
5. Sonata Arctica

but my current favourite changes like every week. These five are just bands I always end up playing every week. (Except maybe Floyd but they just have to be in there.) Honorable mentions go to Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Dark Tranquillity, Slayer, Iron Maiden, and Opeth.

in all reality though Nightwish is my pet fanboyism band

edit: and blackfield is going to be up there

The Cure
Converge
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Streetlight Manifesto
The Fall of Troy

Converge looks so out of place there.

I don't really have an all time favorite band but I really like:

At The Drive-In
The Thermals
Peter Bjorn and John
Piebald
The Appleseed Cast
The Mars Volta
Hot Water Music
Aqueduct (even though I think it's only one guy...)
Fugazi
The Faint
Broadcast
Islands

Possible favorite artist though, Mux Mool.

Than there's rappers and stuff like MF Doom, Quasimoto (madlib), and various others.

I don't like to sound generic but I listen to almost everything.
