Project UU Victim of the Week (Round Twenty Four: Rhyperior)

First off, I would like to point out Diamond Storm isn't usually ran, so you would be toxicing it anyways, which it can't roost stall that. I should've stated that in my OP, however, so that's my fault.

Counters:

1557333353052-png.174362
1557334688361-png.174368
1557333598938-png.174363
- I think it's fair to group these all together, due to them having the same common type that makes them Counters. All can come in on Moltres alot and either murder it, or pressure it with status, and in Diancie's and Rhyperior's case, get rocks up. Rhyp and Dianice can pressure switches with Toxic, and Aerodactyl can punish Moltres for switching with Pursuit. Overall, these are probably the best answers in my opinion. My vote will probably go to Mega Aerodactyl due to access to Roost to consistently answer Moltres. That is my personal problem with Rhyperior, as it only has Leftovers to rely on to stay healthy.

Yes sorry was just going with what you put on set for diancie comments. But as diancie doesn't really have recovery (unless wasting z move for z-heal bell) only running toxic gives it a fair amount of turns to actually burn it down especially once chipped and especially if cleric on team.

Also dno if you just went down my list but you didn't include nihilego with the other rock types :P ? and woops didn't notice the zeraora nom.

prolly voting for aero rhyp and rak respectively depending the amounts. rock types are whack. surprised ppl still like rotom-h as their check since its much easier to wear down with its rocks weakness. dont have much else to add.

Voting aero as a counter to moltres. Especially since unlike the other counters listed, Aero is the only one to have a reliable recovery making aero the best counter to moltres.

Alright, it’s time. Victim of the Week has returned and we’ll be continuing the round with the Voting Phase! Here’s what you can vote for:

It appears we’re at a tie. I’m voting Nihilego as a counter to break it as I’m more of a fan of more offensive counters anyway.
The Winners are:

Estarossa

Twilight and Estarossa
Twilight used Terrakion to stone Moltres to death while Estarossa brings in the best offensive special Flying-type counter Nihilego to shut down Moltres.

Rotom-H=3
Starmie=0
Zeraora=0

Counters:
Nihilego=4

Round 19’s Victim is:
Feraligatr
feraligatr.gif

Feraligatr @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 36 HP / 252 Atk / 220 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Liquidation
- Crunch
- Ice Punch

Got to stay with the trends currently and Screens have had a huge upbringing with how potent it is against various archetypes. Feraligatr is the best abuser of Screens over an offensive Water like Crawdaunt due to its high Speed, mono Water-typing that grants it a neutrality to U-turn, and somewhat better defensive stats. Feraligatr has overall been an overlooked Pokémon for the entirety of this generation so the reintroduction of Screens has been nothing but a blessing to it. Submissions are due by Thursday as always. See you then!

primarina.gif

Primarina @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Moonblast
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Primarina is a hard Check to gatr. Yes you resist STAB+Coverage but you're relying on Scald Burns + Moonblast rolls to reliably deal with it. Meanwhile, Gatr needs 2 high rolls with +2 Liquidation to 2HKO. So yea, cool motive, still murder. Oh yea and you 2HKO with Moonblast after rocks and can burn it w/ scald. Therefore, prima is a hard check.

Sceptile-Mega @ Sceptilite
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Giga Drain
- Leaf Storm
- Dragon Pulse
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Outspeeds at +1 and OKHOs with Leaf Storm. If 4hp over these evs, Giga Drain does it too.

Pyukumuku @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rest
- Soak
- Block
- Toxic

Phys def pyukumuku serves as a fantastic counter to feraligatr, since unlike quagsire which can be 2hkoed by life orb liquidation with a little chip, and other defensive checks which need to watch out for dragon dance and not being able to kill it quick enough, it takes nothing from anything feraligatr can throw at it thanks to unaware. Guaranteed force it out and waste aurora veil/screens turns or flat out beat it 100%.

252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Pyukumuku: 77-91 (24.5 - 28.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Pyukumuku: 61-73 (19.4 - 23.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Pyukumuku: 36-43 (11.4 - 13.6%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Alomomola @ Leftovers / Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 40 HP / 252 Def / 216 SpD
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Knock Off
- Scald

Gatr absolutely hates facing Alo (specifically this one) for two reasons. 1) A potential Scald burn limiting its sweep and 2) Knock Off removing its Life Orb, making it so Gatr 4HKOS at +1. In the mean time, Gatr is worn down with burn and potential Helmet chip, and can’t even overpower Alo with Crunch because SF removes the Defense drop. All while Alo Wishes health back and switches in and out to get more health. A definitive counter.

Amoonguss

Amoonguss @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SpD
Bold Nature
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power Fire
- Clear Smog

Amoonguss in general is a good check to Feraligatr as it is able to even survive a +1 Ice punch and it is able to tank the other moves such as Liquidation and Crunch with ease
even after a +1 due to Feraligatrs Dragon Dance.
Amoonguss can either Spore Feraligatr and wear it down with its Giga Drain or Clear Smog it to get rid off its boosted status back to neutral.

Calcs:
Neutral damage:
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 176+ Def Amoonguss: 99-117 (22.9 - 27%) -- 0.6% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 176+ Def Amoonguss: 234-278 (54.1 - 64.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 252 HP / 176+ Def Amoonguss: 125-147 (28.9 - 34%) -- 1.1% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery

+1 damage:
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 176+ Def Amoonguss: 148-175 (34.2 - 40.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 176+ Def Amoonguss: 351-413 (81.2 - 95.6%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 252 HP / 176+ Def Amoonguss: 186-220 (43 - 50.9%) -- 51.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Black Sludge recovery

0 SpA Amoonguss Giga Drain vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 168-198 (53.8 - 63.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
0 SpA Amoonguss Clear Smog vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 55-66 (17.6 - 21.1%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Stealth Rock

Zeraora @ Electrium Z
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Bulk Up
- Plasma Fists
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
Zeraora is a solid check because it always outspeeds +1 Gatr and OHKOs it with Plasma fists. This is nothing special. I chose the bulk-up set specifically over the mixed one however because it carries Electrium-Z more often, which gives it the slightly more unique trait of potentially OHKOing Gatr through it's coveted screens with minimal chip.
252 Atk Zeraora Gigavolt Havoc (180 BP) vs. 36 HP / 0 Def Feraligatr through Reflect: 264-312 (82.5 - 97.5%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Celebi @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 60 HP / 252 SpA / 196 Spe
Modest Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Psychic
- U-turn
- Earth Power

ScarfBi is my nomination for a Feraligatr check. It always switches in on unboosted Gatr and can stomach any of its unboosted attacks should Gatr predict the switch with Ice Punch or Crunch. ScarfBi outspeeds +1 Gatr and Leaf Storm OHKOs it unless behind Light Screen, in which case it is still a 2HKO. Celebi cannot switch in on a boosted Gatr's Crunch or Ice Punch, however it can come in on +1 Liquidation to force Gatr out. The given speed EVs notably also allow Celebi to bait in Beedrill and KO it with Psychic, along with outspeeding Mega-Manectric and living both Overheat and HP Ice, allowing it to safely 2HKO Mega-Manectric if Celebi comes in healthy on no hazards. U-Turn keeps up momentum against foes Celebi outspeeds but can't do much damage to such at Latias, Moltres, and Mega Altaria. This Celebi can even live Substitute Gengar's Sludge Wave 75% of the time to possibly KO it if not behind its sub. Earth Power is there for coverage against threats Celebi outspeeds, particularly Mega Manectric, and to hit things that resist its Grass/Psychic coverage (mainly Steels).

Reserving Suicune as a check. Crocune def has a better matchup - especially if it's roar Suicine - as it invests more in bulk and can rest if it gets crit. Both sets have a more difficult time if it gets to +6, but vincune has an easier time PP stalling all of its crunches.

As sickist said, some of the offensive checks are kinda invalidated by screens. Sceptile and zeraora both rely on the enemy recieving chip to be able to perform OHKOs, and can only do their role while fera is still at +1, while with the popularity of xatu for screens atm having the rocks up to get this chip is hard.

Celebi and manectric definitely aren't even checks, since manectric doesn't outspeed a +1 fera and only 2hkos when screeens are up, and celebi needs a good 25% chip for a good chance of an OHKO with leaf storm.

Amoongus sort of serves as the most reliable check here, since it survives a +1 ice punch and can spore it after, but since no rocky helmet on this one they just need a 3 turn wake to actually beat you unless they are chipped.

Roarcune would serve as a semi reliable check, but it can only prolong the inevitable and once it is forced to rest it becomes fodder.

Primarina is a fairly RNG based check as sickist said in his post, but it's still more reliable than a lot of the checks honestly.

Out of all of these, I will probably be voting for Amoongus and Primarina as checks.

As far as alomamola goes, I would say it is a check not a counter, as you are reliant on scald burns to actually beat it, and under the worst case scenario of not getting these fera can just boost to +3 and 2hko you.

Mane doesn't even outspeed +1 Jolly Gatr and drops to it while only 2HKOing in return. Scarf Celebi also fails to OHKO screens Gatr. The fat water answers not named Pyukumuku need scald burns to consistently win if screens are up except for Cune which is alright until late game. Amoon can potentially drop to Ice Punch if it takes any damage whatsoever that doesn't get regenerated. Scept and Zera are alright but if their teams fail to get hazards up it can get sticky missing the OHKO. Overall Pyuk and Cune are the only answers with any consistency, good lord Gatr is hard to check.

I would like to point out that Pyuku is the only counter here. Just throwing that out here

Uhhhhh hello everyone! Sorry that this week has been so difficult but I’ll make this brief, anything that Feraligatr does affects what checks and counters it. An outside force like Screens for example won’t determine the checks and counters of this week. Other than that, Pyukumuku and Primarina are the only Pokémon that fully counter Feraligatr in this scenario. If Alomomola was carrying Toxic and Amoonguss was carrying Rocky Helmet, these submissions would have just made the Counter list. So other than that, here’s what you can vote for:

Checks:

Alright vote for two checks and one counter. Since I fucked up the schedule again, we’ll make the next round Wednesday, Discussion Phase Sunday, and Voting Phase Monday from now on. Thank you for your patience!
