Resource VGC: Ask a Simple Question, Get a Simple Answer

Hey all, new to forum posting. Is this thread linked here the definitive place to discuss Champions doubles? (Whatever the format that is played when you load up Champions on Switch right now, not the official VGC format currently being played at time of writing)

If so, I guess I'm a little surprised that there's not more activity. According to Freezai, this is by far the most popular structured format on Showdown

freezai is right, champions vgc doubles is by far the most played ladder and its not even close (the stats he showed doesn't even include the games being played on Pokemon Champions). The reasons it doesn't get discussed as much is more to do with who's using Smogon. If you're active on smogon its probably because you are interested in the 'smogon singles' scene (formats like OU, UU, Ubers etc.). This is cause these formats are entirely managed on smogon (such as which pokemon are legal and tournament play). It's hard to be super active in these scenes without beign active on smogon. This isnt the case with VGC, most tournaments are hosted by the pokemon company or on limitless, some top VGC players will not even have a Smogon account let alone be active on here. VGC teams are generally shared on other platforms like twitter or youtube, and most people will discuss the meta privately in their own teambuilding groups on discord.

Makes total sense, thank you!

Why is mega Chimecho outclassed by other offensive Pokemon like Aegislash and Kingambit?

Additionally, what playstyles or what kinds of teams are good in this metagame? What common threats should teams be able to check? Is there anything else people should know when making teams?

The cost/benefit ratio just isn't in Mega Chimecho's favor. It's a decent Pokémon in a vacuum, but doesn't do enough to stand out to justify using the Mega slot on it. Having Levitate and being unable to abuse Expanding Force also kind of sucks.

Wait I'm confused - I thought these two were the same thing?
No (although we are all pretending they are). Official events are currently being run in regulation I (double restricted scarlet/violet). However, essentially all grassroots tournaments are Reg M-A (champions).

Why is Incineroar blocked from having U-Turn in Reg M-A? I thought HOME movesets transferred over, and Incineroar gets U-Turn in every generation.

Champions has its own movesets, with some additions/removals compared to even SV. Incineroar does not in fact get U-Turn in Champions, it was one of the notable removals from its movepool.

So all Pokemon that enter Champions from HOME get a moveset wipe just like SwSh <-> SV did? If so, what determines the initial Champions moveset?

They don't get moves wiped, if you bring in a Pokemon with a move it can't get in Champions you need to replace the move to use it on a team (or at least the move is grayed out and unusable)

What exactly happens? Is the Pokemon not allowed to visit Champions? Can the Pokemon be put on a team or not? Is the move greyed out in battle like with SwSh's deleted moves?

You can send a Pokémon with an illegal move to Champions, but you will be forced to replace said move in Training before you're allowed to put it on a team.

Source: I transferred a random Farigiraf I had to Champions, found out the move Psybeam is illegal in the game and couldn't field the mon at all until it was fixed.

What happens for legal moves (like U-turn) that aren't on a specific Pokemon's moveset (like Incineroar)?

The game forces you to change them before you can actually use them on ladder, same as if they have a move not present in Champions like Return or Hidden Power.

Do note that similarly to other Switch games, Champions changes remain inside Champion, once you "send back" your pokemon to Home or SV or what have you, it'll have the previous moveset back.

I’m on Champions trying to build a Sandstorm team. Apart from the obvious Tyranitar and Excadrill, what are some other good mons to round it out?

Veilchomp, mega meganium, (counter your weaknesses) orthworm (trust me on earthquake to heal) a trick room setter (+ 1-2 slow mons)

There you go.

not sure why you need a counter to :victreebel-mega: its trash and not seen. scizor isnt that popular either. buuut probably :mamoswine: Mamoswine would best fit your needs. for singles goe to either the champions section or bss section pls

It's the slowest poison mega that has a good spa (also doubles btw so scizor is kinda popular) and ok... I'll try to get that fitted in my floette team (it may be a bit for the rng gods to give me that one)

my point is you will never see victreebel mega so dont counter it. its not good.

Hello there AF89 you can post it in the Rate My Team section of Snogon BUT you must follow their rules. I'll keep an eye out for your team!
Thanks! I'd love to post it there, but I've been looking through the guidelines, and it looks like it's mostly for completed teams. I'm honestly struggling a bit with fleshing it out, and I've tried a ton of different combinations; some of them are strong, but not quite there. And the changes aren't likely to be minute EV changes, but to use different pokemon or sets entirely. I can post the version I'm using now, though, and hopefully I can still get some feedback :)
