Victim Of The Week [On Hiatus]

Tapu Bulu @ Assault Vest
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Wood Hammer
- Horn Leech
- Superpower
- Stone Edge / Rock Tomb

Tapu Bulu is a solid answer to Suicune that can OHKO it with Wood Hammer or safely recover HP with Horn Leech.

252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Suicune in Grassy Terrain: 222-264 (107.2 - 127.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Suicune in Grassy Terrain: 144-170 (69.5 - 82.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery and Grassy Terrain recovery
0 SpA Suicune Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 44-54 (24.8 - 30.5%) -- 0.5% chance to 4HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
252+ SpA Suicune Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 62-74 (35 - 41.8%) -- 70.5% chance to 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

  • You can't vote for your own submission
  • You can only change your vote once, so think carefully before doing so
  • You can vote even if you haven't made a submission. It is expected that you vote if you did submit yourself, but not compulsory

Tapu Koko @ Electrium Z
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Taunt
- Volt Switch

Tapu Koko is one of if not the best Electric-type in the tier. Thunderbolt under Electric Terrain hits hard, 2HKOing every set bar jank sets like max HP/SpD Calm AV sets. If needed, Tapu Koko can just obliterate the most common forms with Gigavolt Havoc, achieving a clean OHKO on offensive AV sets:
252 SpA Tapu Koko Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Suicune in Electric Terrain: 216-254 (104.3 - 122.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Taunt can also shut down much of Suicune's moves, preventing it from using Substitute, Calm Mind, Rest, Toxic, Protect, Roar, and Reflect. Volt Switch can revenge kill a weakened Suicune (252 SpA Tapu Koko Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Suicune in Electric Terrain: 90-108 (43.4 - 52.1%) -- 5.9% chance to 2HKO) or pivot out if the Suicune user switches.

Dewgong @ Chople Berry/Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 96 SpA / 156 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Perish Song
- Ice Beam
- Surf/Hydro Pump
- Protect/Toxic

I've put a variety of options here since it's not just about what Dewgong can do vs. Suicune, but what utility it can provide to the rest of the team. Chople is great for eating a hit from Mega Blaziken. If one runs pump, they can eat a hjk from max adamant and guaranteed OHKO non-bulky Mega-Blaziken after rocks if running pump though it does sacrifice accuracy. This is not including the Protect mindgames. It guaranteed takes a double edge from jolly mence and has high chance to OHKO non-bulky mence with ice beam, which is guaranteed with blizzard but not worth the accuracy drop. You can run leftovers over chople if you aren't concerned with strong fighting types like mega luc/mega blaziken.

Dewgong mishes Suicune in the 1v1, perish song consistently forces Suicune out when it decides it wants to do its silly shenanigans. Even at +2, Hydro Vortex from max spa suicune bounces off the GOAT that is Dewgong.

+2 252 SpA Suicune Hydro Vortex (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 96+ SpD Dewgong: 92-108 (46.7 - 54.8%)

As for scald:

252 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 252 HP / 96+ SpD Dewgong: 23-27 (11.6 - 13.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Just read what the calc says.

Ice beam can of course freeze. Dewgong cannot be haxed by suicune ice beam due to having that ice type.

Toxic can be ran over protect, which gives a better matchup vs. more bulky mons such as P2 and suicune without rest if they are able to keep switching around. Protect is better for pure perish trapping.

Literally the only thing Suicune can do against a full health T H I C C fat dewgong is hope they have roar so they don't have to face this monster.

Toxapex @ Black Sludge
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Haze
- Toxic
- Recover

Resists Scald, can't be Toxic'd, takes 0 from all moves, and pp stalls with Haze and Regenerator.

Tapu Bulu @ Assault Vest
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Wood Hammer
- Horn Leech
- Superpower
- Stone Edge / Rock Tomb

Tapu Bulu is a solid answer to Suicune that can OHKO it with Wood Hammer or safely recover HP with Horn Leech.

252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Suicune in Grassy Terrain: 222-264 (107.2 - 127.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Suicune in Grassy Terrain: 144-170 (69.5 - 82.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery and Grassy Terrain recovery
0 SpA Suicune Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 44-54 (24.8 - 30.5%) -- 0.5% chance to 4HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
252+ SpA Suicune Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 62-74 (35 - 41.8%) -- 70.5% chance to 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

I gotta vote for Devilican 's Dewgong. Honestly despite its meme status I'm rather skeptical of how good that would be in a ladder or tournament setting on a consistent basis, but I do think it actually does the best job against Suicune compared to all the Pokemon here. Tapu Koko and Tapu Bulu can get hit hard (ok chunked in Tapu Bulu's case lol) by more offensive Suicune, and while Toxapex is nearly as good (and a proven good Pokemon lol), it does lose to one silly thing: fukin Sheer Cold. Yes, 20% accuracy sucks, but you never know when you're gonna have a bad laddering day, because it only takes one bad roll for Toxapex to go down!

(I will admit though I sorta want to try a team with Dewgong on it for cart laddering now though lol)

I second this, though I’d suggest Lapras over Dewgong, not only because it outclasses but it has water absorb as well, so know Scald burns.

I should note something that I've been finding difficult with this.

In some cases it's actually really difficult to find one mon that completely shuts down another mon. Take for example this thread about Suicune, when I was nominating Dewgong, I nominated it (though I'd have nominated Lapras if I wasn't meming) because it shut down every set of Suicune. Is it a good mon in general? No. I'd argue Lapras is kinda not that good in general either though I think a tad underrated. It is good in this one specific circumstance and a few other circumstances. I can think of many mons like this, the one that specifically comes to mind is Sheninja that completely shuts down mons without the right coverage or status moves. Heck, Sheninja completely shuts down a Suicune without Toxic.

Koko and Bulu meanwhile are great mons in general that can be put on a wide variety of teams to success. Yes, both theoretically beat Suicune. If I was to lead Suicune and the opponent was to lead Koko or Bulu, I'd probably want to be getting out of there. That said, Koko can never switch in on Hydro Vortex. You don't even need to predict with vortex, you can sub or calm mind, either of which allows you to eat Koko's hits and KO with Vortex or +1 Pump. Bulu is a bit better, but even AV Bulu gets 2HKOed by MaxSpA Neutral nature Suicune's ice beam at +1 and is slower so can be KOed on switchin or if there's a sub. It can also be burnt by scald which is awful. Grassy Terrain also benefits Suicune heavily as Suicune with LO can protect/Sub etc. on grassy terrain and lose no HP whilst PP stalling Bulu. Toxapex is a great pick too for negating Suicune's power, but Suicune can PP-Stall Pex with pressure and can just sit behind a substitute.

In essence, generally what you want to do is have more than one game plan, especially against a non-1D mon like suicune and play well. Bulu-Pex for example as a core is well established and does far better vs. Suicune than a single mon of the above. You have to be in the mindset vs. Suicune in two aspects:

1. Do I have something that can break it

This can be anything. Koko and Bulu are great examples of this. Kartana and Thund-T are two others that come to mind that just blow Suicune away.

2. Is my team susceptible to being calm-minded/substituted on

Toxapex is a great example of a mon that doesn't necessarily kill suicune, but can sit in on suicune and does not allow Suicune to get CMs off. Fast taunters, mons that threaten a 2HKO whilst not getting OHKOed but without being able to be easily PP stalled etc. When you start to know what the set is specifically, then you can really put the damage in.

In essence, often the case with mons like Suicune is your aim is to not have a mon on your team that is suicune food that they can start their suicune things against rather than have a bunch of dedicated counters. That's how you can shut it down best IMO. For sure with some mons though, you can slap X-Mon on and it completely negates anything the other mon wants to do so long as you don't mess up horrendously.

Congratulations Devilican! Your submission will be logged in the Archive!
Victim of the Week 53 - Vivillon

Up next we have the Scale Pokemon, Vivillon! This is one of the mons that a lot of players never take too seriously, but can be hard to stop if it gets going. Vivillon's stats may be sub-par, but Compound Eyes-boosted Sleep Powder opens up opportunities for it to set up Quiver Dances, coupled with a high BP STAB in Hurricane, which can also cause confusion. So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions will be closed in 4 days from now. Good Luck!

Reserving Stakataka.

Stakataka @ Life Orb
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
IVs: 0 Spe
Brave/Lonely Nature
- Trick Room
- Gyro Ball
- Rock Blast
- Earthquake/Superpower

Stakataka resists and is neutral to every move Vivillon throws at it, and can proceed to use it as set up fodder. Substitute isn't even a concern, thanks to Rock Blast OHKOing it.

252+ Atk Stakataka Rock Blast (2 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Vivillon: 336-392 (216.7 - 252.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Stakataka Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Vivillon: 243-286 (156.7 - 184.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Cradily is a niche option, but is a a top check for it in NU, where Vivillion is found. (Or at least how I check it) It also, unlike other grass checks, can tank a hidden power fire/hurricane, and is prepared for anything Vivillion throws at it, ever. It also has instant recovery, something its other checks might not have.

Cradily @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Recover
- Toxic
- Rock Slide

Firstly, Cradily is immune to sleep powder, being a grass type. With a specially defensive set, Cradily can easily take a +1 Hurricane on a critical hit and retaliate with a rock slide. If Vivillion chooses to set up a substitute, it can still survive a 2HKO after Leftovers and retaliate with a rock slide.

+1 252 SpA Vivillon Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Cradily on a critical hit: 217-256 (57.8 - 68.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

8 Atk Cradily Rock Slide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Vivillon: 472-564 (156.8 - 187.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Cradily typically is a stealth rock setter and tank, so the above set is not implausible.

Tapu Koko @ Electrium Z
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Dazzling Gleam
- U-Turn

Very straightforward offensive counterlead to Vivillon. Tapu Koko's Electric typing offensely and defensively checks Vivillon, and Electric Terrain blocks Sleep Powder, making Tapu Koko one of the vanishingly few answers to sleep that isn't significantly hurt by Hurricane (besides Mandibuzz, I guess). Two Thunderbolts later and Vivillon is toast. Koko can run a huge amount of sets as we all know, so here's a nice Gigavolt HP Fire thing that you might expect it to use as a standard. This is as cookie cutter as it gets so have at it ^_^

I'll reserve ferrothorn

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
Level: 50
EVs: 248 HP / 28 Atk / 4 Def / 228 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Ferrothorn makes an excellent check to Vivillon lacking Hidden Power Fire, a move which has ~0.13% usage. Its typing makes Hurricane deal neutral damage while being immune to Sleep Powder. If the Vivillon user thinks they can get away with switching out to deal with Ferrothorn, they risk either their switchin being hit with Leech Seed or Ferrothorn setting up Stealth Rock, which will cripple Vivillon due to its 4x weakness to Rock. The given EVs and Brave nature allow Ferrothorn to guarantee an OHKO with Gyro Ball while guaranteeing it survives a +3 Hurricane and having a chance of living +4.

+3 252 SpA Vivillon Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 228 SpD Ferrothorn: 135-159 (75 - 88.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

+4 252 SpA Vivillon Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 228 SpD Ferrothorn: 160-189 (88.8 - 105%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO

28+ Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (150 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Vivillon: 156-184 (100 - 117.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Cant say's Aegislash over Koko because of its priority.

In situations where Vivilon somehow gets to +2 or +3 (which is very unlikely, but still better to be prepared) and outspeeds every fast shit (including Koko), surviving a hit from Vivilon, being able to set up SD and outspeeding #666 with Shadow Sneak is dope. Just pray that Psychic Terrain is not in the field.

Even in the case Psychic Terrain is up, Vivillon is a Flying-type, so it doesn't matter

While Aegi is the goat, I think there are way better items for it in this gen than googles, so I'm going with ethan06's Tapu Koko for this one.

Feesh Squad's Ferrothorn

I like Aegi and Zapdos a lot to deal with this but Safety Goggles feels like a waste of an itemslot most of the time when Grass-types and Terrains are in the meta, so I'm voting for something more splashable. I will say that Aegi under Misty or Electric Terrain is the best blanket check to all of the common sleep users except perhaps HP Fire Amoonguss, and Safety Goggles is perfect for this particular thing but I'd just much rather have Ghostium or Weakness Policy lol
