Yveltal as a Check
yveltal.gif

Yveltal @ Leftovers
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Foul Play
- Taunt
- Sucker Punch
- Roost

Yveltal can come in on Excadrill's Earthquake (but in this case, it's advised to give it a safe switch-in against it), isn't close to be 2HKOed its other moves (unboosted, of course) and has a great chance to OHKO it with Foul Play (an obvious guaranteed one if Excadrill uses SD and a less obvious guaranteed one after SR alone!). If Foul Play doesn't KO, it's more likely that the LO recoil will do (that or even Sucker Punch). However, Yveltal needs to have SR removed before trying to switch into Excadrill as it's outsped (even without sand) and OHKOed at +2 after SR.
252+ Atk Life Orb Excadrill Iron Head vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Yveltal: 142-169 (31.2 - 37.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Excadrill Rock Slide vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Yveltal: 179-213 (39.3 - 46.8%) -- 93% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery (don't switch into that!)
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Excadrill Rock Slide vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Yveltal: 356-421 (78.2 - 92.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock (get rid of SR before switching into SD!)

0 Atk Dark Aura Yveltal Foul Play vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Excadrill: 354-417 (97.7 - 115.1%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO (guaranteed OHKO after LO recoil or SR!)
+2 0 Atk Dark Aura Yveltal Foul Play vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Excadrill: 706-832 (195 - 229.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Dark Aura Yveltal Sucker Punch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Excadrill: 220-259 (60.7 - 71.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (in case the mole isn't dead yet)
Oh and I'd like to vote for Ghostceus for the next Victim of the Week.

Edit: 200th post!!!

Nominating defensive Primal Kyogre as a check.

upload_2015-6-3_18-32-49.png

Kyogre @ Blue Orb
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 17 Atk
- Scald
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Ice Beam

Physically defensive Kyogre is a solid set that can OHKO Excadrill with Scald. It risks getting 2HKOed on the switch (guaranteed if SR is up) so it's far from a counter, but it's still a good check. If low on health, Kyogre can at least rob Excadrill of its Sand (should it be up) so a teammate can revenge kill it. Packing it with a quality defensive Flying-type, such as Lugia, Mega Salamence, or Landorus-T is recommended so Excadrill cannot freely spam Earthquake in hopes of netting the 2HKO on Kyogre.

What's the point of 17 Atk when you have no Physical moves?

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! There were so many good ones that, I had to include 5 of the best counters/checks I saw, although, it was not easy leaving any of those away. Anyways, I must apologize for not working much more on the OP, which is because of the examinations at my school, so I've been slightly busy. However, I've updatet the OP the way I usually do and we are ready to move into the next week. Seeing that you could vote, you probably know by now which 'mon it will be this week, but I have to say that I will, again, do it a little bit differently than usual. Since he is so versatile, I have decided to split week to seperately focus on one of the variants at a time. Basically, we will continue on monday with a new set for the victim of the week, who is Arceus-Ghost!
arceus-ghost.gif

Arceus-Ghost @ Spooky Plate
Ability: Multitype
EVs: 252 Atk ? Spe ? HP
Adamant Nature

Other moves: Stone Edge, Substitute, Earthquake, etc.

We are starting with the SD variant. And at monday I will post the CM variant. Have fun!

Yveltal @ Life Orb
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 24 HP / 48 Atk / 252 SpA / 184 Spe
Mild Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Oblivion Wing
- Sucker Punch
- Taunt / Foul Play / U-Turn

Yveltal takes very little from any of Ghostceus's moves (unless it runs Stone Edge) and can OHKO back with Sucker Punch or Dark Pulse. Oblivion Wing is Yveltal's secondary STAB and can be used to hit switch-ins hard and regain HP lost from LO recoil. In the last slot, Taunt is viable to shut down walls and prevent Defog while Foul Play allows it to punish Ho-oh and boosting physical sweepers. U-Turn is obvious momentum.

252 Atk Arceus-Ghost Stone Edge vs. 24 HP / 0- Def Yveltal: 240-284 (60.1 - 71.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Shadow Force vs. 24 HP / 0- Def Yveltal: 129-152 (32.3 - 38%) -- 2.3% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
48 Atk Life Orb Dark Aura Yveltal Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Arceus-Ghost: 335-398 (87.9 - 104.4%) -- 25% chance to OHKO

Arceus @ Dread Plate
Ability: Multitype
EVs: 248 HP / 4 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Judgment / Dark Pulse
- Recover
- Calm Mind
- Refresh / Substitute

It is definitely one of the more solid checks to any Arceus-Ghost really, but SD is the only variant it does not fully counter. Arceus-Dark will need to be in against Arceus-Ghost before it boosts in order to check it properly, otherwise it will come down to a Speed tie since +2 Brick Break surprisingly 2HKOes Arceus-Dark.
Calcs:
  • 4 SpA Dread Plate Arceus-Dark Judgment vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Arceus-Ghost: 260-308 (68 - 80.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 4 SpA Dread Plate Arceus-Dark Dark Pulse vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Arceus-Ghost: 206-246 (53.9 - 64.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • 252 Atk Arceus-Ghost Brick Break vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Arceus-Dark: 134-158 (30.2 - 35.6%) -- 29.5% chance to 3HKO
  • +2 252 Atk Arceus-Ghost Brick Break vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Arceus-Dark: 264-312 (59.5 - 70.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Gengar-Mega @ Gengarite
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 252 Spa / 252 Spe -OR- 248 HP / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Protect/Taunt
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Destiny Bond
OR
- Protect
- Substitute
- Perish Song
- Destiny Bond

Obviously Gengar cannot switch into Shadow Claw or anything like that, but it works as a more offensive Ekiller check. Gengar can force a trade with Dbond or get Ghosty to switch out. Its speed, typing and moveset give it the upper hand in 50/50 games, especially if Ghosty does not have Shadow Claw.

Shadow Ball unfortunately is a 2HKO because Gengar is a weak shit.

252 SpA Mega Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Arceus-Ghost: 272-324 (71.2 - 84.8%)

Primal Groudon as a Check

groudon-primal.gif

Groudon @ Red Orb
Ability: Desolate Land
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Precipice Blades
- Lava Plume
- Roar / Thunder Wave / Dragon Tail

This support PDon variant is bulky enough to survive a SD-boosted Shadow Force from Ghostceus and still strong enough to 2HKO Him with Precipice Blades. It also has the tools to cripple Him with a burn via Lava Plume or paralysis via Thunder Wave and to phaze Him away to deny His almighty sweep with Roar or Dragon Tail. Stone Edge can be used over Lava Plume to nail Ho-Oh and because Precipice Blades already covers Steel-type in general.
252 Atk Arceus-Ghost Brick Break vs. 252 HP / 56+ Def Primal Groudon: 45-54 (11.1 - 13.3%) -- possible 7HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Arceus-Ghost Extreme Speed vs. 252 HP / 56+ Def Primal Groudon: 48-57 (11.8 - 14.1%) -- possible 7HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Arceus-Ghost Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 56+ Def Primal Groudon: 60-71 (14.8 - 17.5%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Shadow Claw vs. 252 HP / 56+ Def Primal Groudon: 76-90 (18.8 - 22.2%) -- 0.1% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Shadow Force vs. 252 HP / 56+ Def Primal Groudon: 129-153 (31.9 - 37.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252 Atk Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Shadow Force vs. 252 HP / 56+ Def Primal Groudon: 258-304 (63.8 - 75.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

0 Atk Primal Groudon Precipice Blades vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Arceus-Ghost: 186-219 (48.8 - 57.4%) -- 93.4% chance to 2HKO (guaranteed one after SR)

Other moves: Substitue, Refresh, Will-O-Wisp

I'll pick the winners at the end of this week!

Ho-oh (Check)
250.png

Bird Of Flames (Ho-Oh) @ Choice Band
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 196 Atk / 60 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Brave Bird
- Sacred Fire
- Earthquake
- Sleep Talk

Choice Band Ho-oh is a solid check to most of the Arceus forms with Calm mind sets, and Arceus-Ghost is one of them. The reason why Ho-oh checks calm mind sets so easily, is due to it's great special bulk and sheer power. There is no way Arceus-Ghost can win against Ho-oh, as Ho-oh's Sacred Fire 2HKO's Arceus-Ghost, and Arceus-Ghost cannot 2HKO Ho-oh with judgment even at +1, which makes Ho-oh a solid check Arceus-Ghost.

Calculations:

4 SpA Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Judgment vs. 252 HP / 60 SpD Ho-Oh: 100-118 (24 - 28.3%) -- 95.4% chance to 4HKO

+1 4 SpA Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Judgment vs. 252 HP / 60 SpD Ho-Oh: 150-177 (36 - 42.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

196+ Atk Choice Band Ho-Oh Sacred Fire vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Arceus-Ghost: 220-261 (49.5 - 58.7%) -- 98.8% chance to 2HKO

Nominating Darkrai as a hard check.

Ripping off Steelphoenix LOL (Darkrai) @ Life Orb
Ability: Bad Dreams
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot / Focus Blast / Thunder / Taunt
- Dark Pulse
- Sludge Bomb / Thunder / Taunt
- Dark Void

SD and CM Ghost Arceus share some of the same checks; perhaps the most notable difference between the two is that while CM is shut down by Toxic (SD can deal a good deal of damage before Toxic finishes it off), the SD set is crippled by Will-O-Wisp (which fails to put CM Arceus on a timer). Both hate the excellent move: Thunder Wave and are obviously incapacitated by sleep. Darkrai is a great Pokemon in general and will win vs. Ghost Arceus every time unless it misses Dark Void or switches in on a Focus Blast. It can safely set up a Nasty Plot vs. Ghost Arceus late-game if you know it lacks Focus Blast and your opponent has nothing to revenge Darkrai with.

Arceus-Dark @ Dread Plate
Ability: Multitype
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Judgment
- Recover
- Refresh

Arceus-Dark laughs at whatever Arceus-Ghost can do (except Focus Blast but it needs to hit FB twice in a row as well as winning a Speed tie with Rocks up) and can 2HKO it with Judgment or heal up and Calm Mind. Other moves are standard.

0 SpA Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Judgment vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Arceus-Dark: 64-76 (14.4 - 17.1%) -- possible 6HKO
0 SpA Arceus-Ghost Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Arceus-Dark: 172-204 (38.8 - 46%) -- 18.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
8 SpA Dread Plate Arceus-Dark Judgment vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Arceus-Ghost: 260-308 (58.6 - 69.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Clefable as a Counter

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 248 HP / 248 SpD / 12 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Protect
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast

CM Ghostceus variants are helpless when facing SpDef Unaware Clefable as even fully invested Timid ones can't 3HKO Clefable (even when it's burned). In return, Clefable can PP stall Ghostceus and regain its health back with Wish+Protect, and set up Calm Minds until it 2HKOes (four CMs are needed for 248 HP EVs variants) with Moonblast. If Ghostceus isn't carrying Refresh nor Substitute, Toxic can be used over Calm Mind to wear down, PP/Toxic stall and eventually KO Him. If statuses are of concern, then Heal Bell can be used to get rid of its own status and of its teammates as well.
252 SpA Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Judgment vs. 248 HP / 248+ SpD Clefable: 144-171 (36.6 - 43.5%) -- 99.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Judgment vs. 248 HP / 248+ SpD Clefable: 144-171 (36.6 - 43.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery and burn damage
252 SpA Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Judgment vs. +1 248 HP / 248+ SpD Clefable: 96-114 (24.4 - 29%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery and burn damage
252 SpA Spooky Plate Arceus-Ghost Judgment vs. +2 248 HP / 248+ SpD Clefable: 73-87 (18.5 - 22.1%) -- 52% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery and burn damage

Snatch Chansey/Blissey are pretty great at demolishing most CM Arceus. (They're technically two different Pokes but they're very similar so I'll just put both here.)

Blissey (F) @ Leftovers/Shed Shell -OR- Chansey (F) @ Eviolite
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Soft-Boiled
- Snatch
- Heal Bell

Blissey/Chansey are immune to Ghostceus' STAB. Focus Blast does very little damage despite being super effective (calcs below) and has low accuracy as well as low PP.

For anyone not familiar with how Snatch works, Snatch is an increased priority move that steals the effects of a healing or stat boosting move used by the opponent that turn. For example, if Arceus uses Recover and you selected Snatch that turn, Blissey will use Recover instead, and Arceus won't recover any health. Snatch also steals Refresh, Calm Mind, and Rest.
Thus, this set is easy to use. Just poison the opposing Arceus and spam Snatch and heal up with Soft-Boiled if you need to. Arceus will die from Toxic or run out of Judgments/Fblast.

4 SpA Arceus-Ghost Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 252+ SpD Blissey: 118-140 (18.1 - 21.5%) -- possible 5HKO
0 SpA Arceus-Ghost Focus Blast vs. 4 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Chansey: 94-112 (14.6 - 17.4%) -- possible 6HKO
252 SpA Arceus-Ghost Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 252+ SpD Blissey: 146-172 (22.4 - 26.4%) -- 13.4% chance to 4HKO
252 SpA Arceus-Ghost Focus Blast vs. 4 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Chansey: 116-138 (18 - 21.4%) -- possible 5HKO

Thanks for all the suggestions! This week has been long, which is partially my fault. However, I kind of think it was fitting, seeing how we had two different sets this week, and the fact that someone posted a new counter yesterday as well. I decided to split up the checks/counters for the two different sets, so you might find your name two times in there, however, it will still only give you +1 point at the hall of fame. Also note that the SD checks are also decent checks to the CM variants as well. But with Arceus-Ghost done, we're ready to move onto the next week. And this time we have a poke that has offenses like no other non-mega and can fill more than one role on your team. The Victim of this Week is the DNA Pokemon, Deoxys-Attack!

Mega Sableye as a hard check.

Sableye-Mega @ Sablenite
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 124 Def / 136 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Foul Play
- Will-O-Wisp
- Fake Out
- Recover

(Disclaimer: I know this spread is, according to many people, slightly outdated, but it works for checking Deoxys-A well).

Mega Sableye has no trouble beating any relevant Deoxys-A set one-on-one and can almost always switch into it due to being immune to Psycho Boost, Low Kick, and Extreme Speed as well as taking negligible damage from Knock Off. Focus Sash variants cannot 2HKO Mega Sableye with Ice Beam (its strongest move to hit Mega Sableye with) and can be beaten with Fake Out + Foul Play. Life Orb variants are OHKO'd by Foul Play.

That being said, Mega Sableye cannot switch into an Ice Beam from Rash LO Deoxys-A (ever) or Naive LO Deoxys-A (with Stealth Rock on the field) because it risks being 2HKO'd.

Last edited:
But ice beam already 2hkoes Latias:
252+ SpA Life Orb Deoxys-A Ice Beam vs. +1 248 HP / 0 SpD Latias: 190-226 (52.3 - 62.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Knock off has exactly 50% chance to ohko 0 def latias, and fails to ohko 84 def latias.
So I guess it's a matter of wanting to hit mewtwo harder, or yveltal/lugia. I like ice beam myself because of the surprise kill it gets on yaveltal and the fact that it's more spammable.

Mega Scizor as a Hard Check / Soft Counter (unless Deoxys-A carries HP Fire)

scizor-mega.gif

Scizor @ Scizorite
Ability: Light Metal
EVs: 248 HP / 60 Atk / 200 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Roost
- Pursuit
- U-turn / Toxic

M-Scizor resists Deoxys-A's STAB, doesn't lose its item to Knock Off, has a mean of recovery via Roost, carries priority and trapping moves via Bullet Punch and Pusrsuit respectively, and is only 2HKOed by the Psycho Boost + Superpower (or vice versa) combination from the LO variant, which is OHKOed by Bullet Punch. The Focus Sash variant is only 2HKOed by M-Scizor, but isn't able to 2HKO M-Scizor itself due to the power drop from the lack of LO. The only tool Deoxys-A can have to deal with M-Scizor is the occasional HP Fire, which obviously OHKOes, that isn't usually used on Focus Sash variants (or even LO ones). That means Deoxys-A's only way to deal with M-Scizor is to lure it in and hitting it with HP Fire on the switch since it'll be OHKOed by Bullet Punch if it stays or Pursuit if it switches out (once HP Fire is revealed, Bullet Punch should be the only option to not risk losing M-Scizor).

To put it shortly, Deoxys-A is either OHKOed by a priority/trapping move or not strong enough to 2HKO M-Scizor and can only deal with it with the right move (should Deoxys-A carry it) on the switch. Therefore, M-Scizor is one hell of a big Deoxys-A check.
68 Atk Deoxys-A Superpower vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 113-133 (32.9 - 38.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Deoxys-A Psycho Boost vs. 248 HP / 200 SpD Mega Scizor: 132-156 (38.4 - 45.4%) -- 14.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock (adding these two calcs together and being aware of stat drops, we can see that it'll never 2HKO after SR)

60+ Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Deoxys-A: 327-385 (135.6 - 159.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
60+ Atk Technician Mega Scizor Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Deoxys-A: 436-514 (180.9 - 213.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
68 Atk Life Orb Deoxys-A Superpower vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Mega Scizor: 147-173 (42.8 - 50.4%) -- 94.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Life Orb Deoxys-A Psycho Boost vs. 248 HP / 200 SpD Mega Scizor: 172-203 (50.1 - 59.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock (when LO is revealed, you can simply Bullet Punch Deoxys-A to death before it KOs you)

Mawile-Mega @ Mawilite
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 248 HP / 16 Atk / 244 SpD
Careful Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Baton Pass
- Iron Head
- Play Rough

Mega-mawile is a nice check to Deo-A as it resists Deo-A's deadliest STAB which is Psycho boost. Mega-Mawile can switch-in easily vs any of Deo-A's any move, and it can then OHKO Deo-A with a single Sucker punch. Still not the most reliable check but it gets the job done.

Calculations:

252+ SpA Life Orb Deoxys-A Psycho Boost vs. 248 HP / 244+ SpD Mega Mawile: 156-185 (51.4 - 61%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
