Project Victim of the Week

Then again with all this MagSpam Earthquake is not a bad move to have on Metagross...especially considering how common Magnezone is on Birdspam.
If you come in on U-turn and he goes into Mag then you die without EQ and you win with it.

EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold nature

Cofagrigus is immune to both Double-Edge and Close Combat, giving it plenty of opportunities to switch in and burn it.

However, it's only a Check, and a shaky one, because it's not immune to Brave Bird. Switching into it limits your options to praying for a trade or switching out. The fact that Cofagrigus can't do anything back doesn't help.

Week 26:
14 checks and 8 counters - thanks a lot! Congrats to The Bravest Bird and Stallmory for making it into the Hall of Fame! This week, we'll tackle Mamoswine!
mamoswine-f.gif

Mamoswine @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 244 Atk / 12 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Icicle Spear
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard
- Freeze-Dry

Its dual STABs have great neutral coverage, ice shard allows it to damage faster threats, and freeze dry lets it bypass potential checks and counters.

Have fun checking & countering!

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Relaxed Nature
-Stealth Rock
-Gyro Ball
-Toxic / Reflect
-Earthquake / Light Screen

Bronzong trolls Mamo to death with his ability and typing. Immune to Earthquake and resisting Icicle Spear/Crash, Bronzong can sit there and toxic, or go for the 2HKO(OHKO after a few LO rounds) with Gyro Ball. If you want Bronzong to run a more supporting set, Light clay and screens is viable to help your team tank hits better. SR is always a nice move, and you can set it up on predicted switches. Speaking of SR, Bronzong resists, and is immune to Spikes making him even more reliable.
Relevant Calcs:
0 Atk Bronzong Gyro Ball (112 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mamoswine: 264-312 (73.5 - 86.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Bronzong: 85-105 (25.1 - 31%) -- approx. 0.1% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
IVs: 0 Atk
Bold Nature
-Moonlight
-Toxic
-Psychic / Hidden Power [Fire]
-Ice Beam / Thunder Wave

Hey look another mon countering Mamo cuz Levitate tho. Immune to Earthquake, but I'm still neutral to Mamo's STABs. However unlike Bronzong, Cress has somewhat reliable recovery in Moonlight, and after one Toxic can just spam Moonlight and watch Mamo die. Psychic is a decent STAB, and HP Fire nails Scizor and Ferro. Ice beam hits a lot of stuff hard like dem genies. TWave is just for slowing stuff down, doesn't really help vs Mamo tho. If Cress gets in on EQ/Ice Shard, it will almost always win unless you get something like 5 hits and 5 crits...even switching in on 5 hit Icicle Spear, it still does less than half. The meta is not kind to Cress, but it still has niches...

Relevant Calcs:
244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Cresselia: 175-215 (39.4 - 48.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

The classic physical wall himself, Skarmory makes a nice counter to Mamoswine, only fearing multiple Icicle Crash flinches or two five-hit Icicle Spears in a row. Brave Bird is a 3HKO back. Counter is an option, however it's easily avoided if Mamoswine spams Freeze-Dry. Toxic is another option if you want to stall it out, but it leaves you as bigger taunt bait. Rotom-Heat! It'll cook up your Mamoswines, roast your Talonflame, and more! Mamoswine needs to hit at least five Icicle Spears 3 times in a row in order to have a shot of KOing. This EV spread avoids the 2HKO from Modest Mega Charizard Y's Fire Blast with no rocks up, while amplifying its defense to take on Mamoswine and Talonflame better.

Mega Scizor as a Check

scizor-mega.gif

Scizor-Mega @ Scizorite
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 128 Atk / 132 Def
Adamant Nature
- Roost
- Knock Off
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch

While SD + 3 attacks Mega Scizor is gaining in popularity, bulky SD mega scizor still is pretty good. With Max (sorta) HP and some Defense investment, Mega Scizor avoids the 2HKO from Mamoswines Earthquake. It can threaten to pick off Mamoswine after some LO recoil and prior damage, or Roost stall it out if need be. However, if Stealth Rock is up then Scizor has a decent chance to be 2HKOd, which is why I'm classifying it as a check.

Calcs:

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 132 Def Mega Scizor: 142-169 (41.3 - 49.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 132 Def Mega Scizor: 142-169 (41.3 - 49.2%) -- 80.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

128+ Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mamoswine: 266-314 (74 - 87.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Bullet Punch with this Attack investment give Scizor a very good chance to OHKO Mamoswine after Stealth Rock and one round of LO recoil.

And for the lols

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 248 HP / 132 Def Mega Scizor: 90-110 (26.2 - 32%) -- approx. 3.3% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon
- Will-O-Wisp

Not 100% standard (usually it runs SR and Taunt), but Timid Baloontran needs Flash Cannon to check Mamoswine properly. It can switch in on EQ while its Balloon is still intact, easily take any hit, and OHKO with Flash Cannon, or disable it with WoW ifr it prefers to. Unfortunately, it's not fast enough to outspeed Naive Mamoswine so it's not a great check, but it's a check regardless.

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Def / 52 SpD
IVs : 0 Spe
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock

- Gyro Ball
- Protect

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 204+ Def Ferrothorn: 160-200 (45.4 - 56.8%) -- approx. 87.5% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

This is the absolute worst-case scenario, if you Protect next turn you only have a 11.7% chance to get 2HKO'd by full Icicle Spear, so you're very unlikely to get 2HKO'd to say the least and can just OHKO back with Gyro Ball. Thanks to Leech Seed+Protect you can even switch into it a few times, so this is a pretty solid counter.

Reserving Mega Venusaur!

COUNTER HARD CHECK

PokemonTomyMegaVenusaurFigureSP14Open1-500x500.jpg

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll -> Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Synthesis/Leech Seed
- Hidden Power Fire/Sleep Powder/Earthquake

Aaaaand here we are with M-Venusaur again (man this thing is amazing). Great bulk, awesome defensive ability for its dual Grass-Poison typing (leaving him with only 2 weaknesses in Psychic and Flying) and good tanking/supporting movepool with access to semi-reliable recovery in form of Synthesis and Leech Seed makes him a beast in today's metagame. Thanks to Thick Fat, Mega-Venusaur no longer gets hit super effectively by Fire and Ice moves, which is significant against Mamoswine, with not one nor two, but three Ice-type attack moves, and by being part Grass-type, M-Venusaur isn't wrekt by Earthquake either.

Not gonna write an Encyclopedia here, so here are the calcs (considering even SR on the field):

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Venusaur: 133-157 (36.5 - 43.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Thick Fat Mega Venusaur: 112-135 (30.7 - 37%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Spear (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Thick Fat Mega Venusaur: 170-210 (46.7 - 57.6%) -- approx. 94.9% chance to 2HKO (4HKO if we take into account 3-hits attacks)

12 SpA Life Orb Mamoswine Freeze Dry vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Thick Fat Mega Venusaur: 65-78 (17.8 - 21.4%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Stealth Rock

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Thick Fat Mega Venusaur: 55-65 (15.1 - 17.8%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock

So basically M-Venusaur always avoids the 3HKO and, thanks to Life Orb's recoil, OHKOs back with Giga Drain (and getting a nice chunk of health back):

0 SpA Mega Venusaur Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Mamoswine: 324-384 (90.2 - 106.9%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO (guaranteed OHKO after Life Orb recoil)

And that's it. M-Venusaur's only problem is the chance of being 2HKOd by two consecutive 5-hits Icicle Spear (which is very unlikely, but can happen). That, and the fact that you have to Mega Evolve first in order to check Mamoswine are the reasons it's considered a (hard) check and not a counter. If you choose to run Sleep Powder, you can safely render it useless (if SP hits, ofc) and kill it after recovering HP back with Synthesis (or Leech Seed). HP Fire is an option against Skarmory, Scizor and Ferrothorn (as always), and Earthquake is your only reliable option to get through Heatran (you 2HKO the standard specially defensive set) and finally Sludge Bomb is your most powerful attack with decent neutral coverage and a decentchance of poisoning the foe, which is nice.

EDIT: Whoops, I did the calcs considering Icicle Crash over Icicle Spear... I'll make the changes right now. Done.

Keldeo @ Leftovers
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature

Keldeo can switch in all mamo's move and OHKOed with secret sword or scald. I chose the SubCM set over the choice specs one to avoid the few probabilities to be OHKO with the combo EQ-ice shard.

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Keldeo: 231-273 (71.5 - 84.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Avalugg @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Recover
- Avalanche
- Toxic

This guy is the premier physical wall of PU ultimate counter to mamoswine. It is one of the most physically bulky mons ever made, with 95 HP, and 184 defense. Although with a horrible defensive typing and a weakness to SR, it still is a decent rapid spinner. Avalugg can switch in on any of mamoswine's moves, proceed to rapid spin hazards away, recover off damage, avalanche it to death, or toxic stall it to death. Well you may be thinking wtf who uses avalugg, but it is actually a decent physical wall with a good form of recovery, and can be used over excadrill if excadrill offers your team bad synergy, or you are in need of a good physical wall. Avalugg can also counter other common threats in ou such as landorus-t, and azumarill. Now for some calcs.

muh bulk:

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 99-117 (25.1 - 29.6%) -- 0% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 42-49 (10.6 - 12.4%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252 Atk Landorus-T Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 110-130 (27.9 - 32.9%) -- 83.7% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Huge Power Azumarill Play Rough vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Avalugg: 124-147 (31.4 - 37.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
8 Atk Avalugg Avalanche vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Thick Fat Mamoswine: 90-106 (25 - 29.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

okay yeah, I think that's enough calcs. Avalugg serves as a premier physical wall and a counter to mamoswine. It has the ability to rapid spin, reliable recovery (unlike skarmory who worries about earthquake when it roosts), a decent STAB move that can actually do some damage, and it can also toxic stall. cmon guys don't hate on avalugg

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Solar Beam
- Focus Blast
- Roost

This is the standard Mega Charizard-Y wallbreaker set, and it works well as a check to Mamoswine. Without rocks up zard can come in on any attacks except Icicle Spear with 3 or more hits as that will get zard to KO range of Ice shard. Charizard can then OHKO Mamoswine with any move, and Roost to gain health, and to to be able to switch in more then once. With Stealth Rocks up you can only switch in on an Earthquake so it's important to keep them off the field. Remeber to always watch out for random Stone Edges.

244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Spear (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Charizard Y: 198-234 (66.6 - 78.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Spear (2 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Charizard Y: 132-156 (44.4 - 52.5%) -- approx. 7.8% chance to 2HKO
244 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Charizard Y: 105-125 (35.3 - 42%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
12 SpA Life Orb Mamoswine Freeze Dry vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard Y: 66-79 (22.2 - 26.5%) -- 21.6% chance to 4HKO

No one should doubt that Charizard can't OHKO Mamoswine, so no such calcs.
