SO SICK (Volcarona) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Swarm
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Fire Blast
- Bug Buzz
- Psychic

The fiery moth has arrived in UU to plague us all. With its ability to quickly start an outbreak of stat boosts and become a super spreader of extremely strong attacks, Volcarona has quickly cemented itself as a pandemic on the ladder, with no one seemingly able to successfully socially distance themselves from it in the builder. What personal protective equipment will you suggest to quarantine yourself from being swept?

Submissions due Thursday!

- Diamond Storm
- Moonblast

Thanks to Avarice for making the set and all the thought behind it, I am simply lowlife trying to get dub. From +0 to +1 you can hard switch in with basically no repercussions. At +2 you're borked if you switch in to psychic and get a drop but if you switch into the other two moves you're money. At +3 you would prefer to switch into bugbuzz, however fire blast into psychic KOing is still a % unless there are rocks in the field I believe. +4 is basically the same as +3 but more damage :D. +5 youre borked on a switch in and +6 too. HOWEVER, you never get OHKO'ed so if its +6 and you have a Diancie with 85% and Diamond Storm then my guy just let it rip.

TL;DR Basically free mu and u can hard early on for free, if for some ungodly reason your cat decides to play 6 turns for you and you have +6 diance you get a clean switch with healthy diance and obliterate it. also s/o avarice

252 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Diancie: 55-65 (18 - 21.3%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Diancie: 82-97 (26.9 - 31.9%) -- 39.7% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Diancie: 109-129 (35.8 - 42.4%) -- 91.9% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+3 252 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Diancie: 136-161 (44.7 - 52.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+4 252 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Diancie: 164-193 (53.9 - 63.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (sad)
+6 252 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Diancie: 217-256 (71.3 - 84.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Ok i changed mine to meteor beam nihilego
Nihilego @ Power Herb
Timid Nature
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 176 SpA / 80 SpD / 252 Spe
- Sludge Wave
- Thunderbolt
- Psyshock
- Meteor Beam

This spread is ev'd to take a +2 psychic from volcarona and KO it back with meteor beam. Once volc is gone, you get a beast boost for speed, allowing for better snowball capabilities. You also get a +1 from the use of meteor beam, thus giving you a strong sweeper. This thing nails the joey sun team that is running around on the ladder.
+2 252 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 0 HP / 80 SpD Nihilego: 300-354 (83.5 - 98.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
176 SpA Nihilego Meteor Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 700-828 (225 - 266.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Accelerock
- Crunch
- Close Combat
- Sucker Punch / Stone Edge / Iron Head

Lycanroc-Dusk is a fantastic check to Volcarona. Lycanroc naturally is faster than Volcarona, and can threaten it with Stone Edge. It can also threaten a boosted Volcarona with Accelerock, which will always move first. Lycanroc-Dusk does have to fear the potential Burn if it clicks Accelerock, though.

They don't call it Murder Dog for no reason.

Araquanid @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Bubble
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Sticky Web
- Protect
- Liquidation
- Toxic

The Fat Spider Araquanid is a very solid counter check to this Volcarona set. At +0, Volcarona only does 26-31% damage with Bug Buzz. So if you switch in right away, you will either take 26-31% (then recover with leftovers), or the Volc will use QD and you have an even better setup to KO it. Liquidation is an automatic OHKO no matter the cirucmstances, and because of Water Bubble you have no danger of being burned like some Aqua Jet or Accelrock users. Safe to say, once Araquanid comes in, there is no benefit for the Volcarona staying in and you will win or the Volcarona will switch.

252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Araquanid: 90-106 (26.4 - 31.1%) -- 12% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Araquanid: 135-159 (39.7 - 46.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Water Bubble Araquanid Liquidation vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Volcarona: 386-456 (124.1 - 146.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Hello! I would call this more of a check because:
  • Stealth Rocks are not factored into the calcs, but they should be considering you're running Leftovers. The extra chip from Rocks makes you even shakier of a check.
  • Araquanid has no reliable recovery, outside of Leftovers, which means Volcarona can easily switch out the first time you take rocks+any other hazards chip+bug buzz, and then 2HKO you the next time you come in.
  • Water Bubble doesn't invalidate Accelerock...
It's up to the project hosts whether or not to do anything about this, but you could easily switch to the standard Araq set and have yourself a decent check! Have a good evening or morning!

I have changed it to be a check instead of a counter.

However, I am pretty sure Accelerock is contact, meaning you can be burned by Flame Body.

Kyurem @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 56 HP / 64 Atk / 252 SpD / 136 Spe
Careful Nature
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Slide
- Substitute
- Roost

I present to you all the forgotten Kyurem, a heavily overshadowed and underrated mon in the current meta with the ability to check some unique special attackers, including Volcarona. This specially defensive set can always switch into HDB Volc as it sets up and is able to sponge any +1 hit and will always ohko with Rock Slide assuming it connects. A physical Kyurem set is also unlikely to be expected given that special attacking sets were more common the last time it was in the tier, making this physical lure variant a reliable Volc check. Facing a Volc in the sun is a bit risky in that a baseline Fire Blast does 52-62%, so it cannot directly switch in for if a Volc decides to attack instead of QD, but it can guaranteed revenge it at +1 (79-93%). Excluding the sun scenario, Kyurem can easily Roost off any damage it normally takes upon switch in and allows it to keep its longevity as a reliable check throughout a battle.

64 Atk Kyurem Rock Slide vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Volcarona: 404-476 (129.9 - 153%) -- guaranteed OHKO 252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 56 HP / 252+ SpD Kyurem: 144-169 (35.5 - 41.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO +1 252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 56 HP / 252+ SpD Kyurem: 213-252 (52.5 - 62.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO +1 252 SpA Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 56 HP / 252+ SpD Kyurem in Sun: 321-378 (79.2 - 93.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 56 HP / 252+ SpD Kyurem: 118-139 (29.1 - 34.3%) -- 4.3% chance to 3HKO +1 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 56 HP / 252+ SpD Kyurem: 175-207 (43.2 - 51.1%) -- 4.7% chance to 2HKO

Mantine @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Roost
- Defog

- Haze / Toxic

Mantine is a great defensive answer to Volcarona, as none of Volcaronas attacks will do enough to Mantine even after a +1 due to its move in Quiver Dance. Mantine can Haze Volcarona and remove its stat-changes and then dishing out Scalds again, until it beats Volcarona. Alternatively it can use Toxic to put it on a timer and subsequently Roost-stall it over the course of the game. To add onto that, mantine can still reliably Defog away annoying entry hazards in the face of Volcarona, as it doesnt fear much from this bug. In overall Mantine counters Volcarona as even a +1 doesnt do much to Mantine.

252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Mantine: 57-67 (15.2 - 17.9%) -- possible 6HKO
252 SpA Volcarona Psychic vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Mantine: 76-90 (20.3 - 24%) -- guaranteed 5HKO
252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Mantine: 57-67 (15.2 - 17.9%) -- possible 6HKO

+1 252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Mantine: 84-99 (22.4 - 26.4%) -- 21.5% chance to 4HKO

Mantine and Jellyfish. Also I feel like a complete fool for not posting this set instead of whatever I did (post deleted btw)

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sticky Hold
EVs: 252 HP / 32 Def / 224 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Clear Smog
- Earthquake
- Scald
- Recover

Not only does this counter Volcarona [ +1 252 SpA Volcarona Bug Buzz vs. 252 HP / 224+ SpD Gastrodon: 190-225 (44.6 - 52.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery ] by taking a hit, clear smog, recover and repeat but block tricks from choiced users like Gengar, Latias, Blacephelon, and so many more which is a god send for balance teams, just requires cleric support while forming a great FWG core with Rotom H and Tangrowth.

Don't count this as a sub btw, just leaving this because I had to get the feeling of regret from my chest. I'll make more quality posts from now on, you can bet on that.
