What do you mean by "phazing"?

Anyway, I'm realling liking Urugamoth. Butterfly Dance, when used, almost guarantees an OHKO on any non-resistant Pokemon, and Flame Dance is so much better than Flamethrower/Fire Blast (the Sp. ATK boost is pro).

It has never bothered my teams too much, but its Flame Body ability is so friggin annoying. Everytime it switches in, take SR damage and then dance up, I go to my Ambipom to fake out it. It always leaves it at 10%ish hp but end up burning my Ambipom T-T making it absolutely useless.

It sucks so hard to get the two butterfly dances needed to sweep an opponents team only to time and again get a ditto sent back to counter you. It's worse than stealth rock at hampering it.

Utube

Has anyone tried phazing Ulgamoth with any success?

I saw a video on YouTube yesterday(can't give a link sorry) and someone used that vulture to phaze it out and because of stealth rocks and spikes they managed to get rid of mothra without attacking it more then once.(ononkusu died coming in too,but that's not important...)

I keep on seeing this thing on every team and I came to see why. It gets destroyed as a lead thanks to Trick and when it switches in it loses 50% of its health, letting my Bullet Punching Scizor take it down in one hit.

Choice Band max attack Scizor Bullet Punch vs 0 HP / 4 Def Ulgamoth;
36.7% - 43.4%

Forgive me if my mathematical skills aren't terribly good, but I'm pretty sure 50 + 43 doesn't equal 100. So unless Mothra took prior damage there is no killing to be had here short of the Fuzzy Butterfly turning Scizor into a puddle. And if it has got prior damage well of course it's going to die to Bullet Punch Scizor, very few things don't die to Bullet Punch Scizor if they've lost 60% of their health already.

Choice Band Quick Attack from Scizor does an absolute minimum of 49% though so you could always try that if you're willing to drop one of your other attacks.

My Life Orbed +2 Bullet Punching Scizor has killed this thing 100% of the time after its taken SR damage.

I haven't used this pokemon myself, but I am underwhelmed by it on opposing teams. Using it as a lead is hilarious, as I run a MH taunt lead. Anywhere else in the match is a bit more tough, and I do wind up sacrificing a weakened pokemon about half the time, but there are much more efficient sweepers out there. It definitely helps that I have Vaporeon on my team, though.

Um, who?

Cause if I lead with Ulgamoth against say, Erufuun... I would just kill it with fire, fuck the BD.

Tornelos or Voltolos would be a different story but for some reason I hear far more chatter about Eru than either of those two.

Voltolos is much more common as a lead than Erufuun, and much better too. Erufuun sucks as a lead actually in my experience, just attack the dang thing. Actually, Erufuun has been pretty underwhelming overall against me compared to the hype about it.

Also, I have no idea why anyone is running an Ulgamoth lead. You don't try to sweep from the very first turn... As for Ulgamoth in general, I haven't used it myself, but it's never been a problem for my team really, thanks to Burungeru. The worst part is how predictable people are with it however. Every single time someone sends it out, they use Butterfly Dance immediately. They'll usually come in on Nattorei, so I usually just T-wave them as they try to set up.
A ragequit typically follows.

Interesting. Nevertheless this Gen is young and I think people will use Ulgamoth a bit more intelligently once they learn to predict things like that, right now a lot of people are making dumb mistakes like forgetting what can T-wave them or not.

Excuse the double post but....

I'm finding that running Ulgamoth with a very defensive spread (252/252 HP/Def) with only a nature boost to its SpA to be very effective, the bulk it grants is often enough to get off at least 2 BDs, after which the lack of investment in its offenses becomes pretty much moot.

I highly advise people to try this as opposed to more standard offensive spreads, as it catches the opponent by surprise and leads to a clean sweep much more often, in my experience anyway.

You never mentioned it was a Swords Dance Scizor initially. Still this means you have to have Scizor out, at +2 already and they have to be stupid enough to swith Urugamosu in while Stealth Rock is in play and then try to set-up on you.

That spread seems very promising, and I know some others who have used it to suprising success as well, but isn't it a bit difficult with a 4x rock weakness? Stone Edge/Rock Slide are quite common, and even with the defensive investement I don't see Ulgamoth surviving a Stone Edge encounter unless you're faster and can OHKO before being hit...

I find this guy is brilliant as a lead. I usually do have to pack Focus Sash since most leads i've come up against have Stone Edged it to death, but it's not uncommon for it to cause problems for the opponent, sometimes even sweep 6-0.

Generally MH is not a problem as I have no issues knocking those users out with regular Bug Buzz. Ditto isn't too annoying either, as I run a Rain Team, meaning I can usually rely on Politoed sucking up its attacks and using Boil Over back. It's quite good as a lead to completely opposite team strategies.

I'd never keep him in on something that had SE or RS... I mean yeah they're common I guess but pretty predictable.

Right now I'm running him on a Drought Ninetales team, with Starmie and Doryuuzu both as offensive rapid spinners (and to take advantage of Rain/Sand respectively, if they show up). I have SB Blaziken and Chlorophyll Tangrowth w/ leech seed to soften up the opponents team for me, after which I bring in Ulgamoth, provided I've cleared all the entry hazards and the sun is still strong. I sweep about 50% of the time which is pretty sweet considering that, well, I'm not THAT experienced compared to many (I'm not a n00b but I don't play often... at all). In one match I was taunted, but I managed to sweep just from Fire Dance boosts.

I admit I hyped it before I used it, not knowing how much or how little SR and such would hinder it. From my experience Ulgamoth has an entirely different "feel" to it than any other SR weak pokemon. ITS WELL WORTH THE TROUBLE OF HIRING RAPID SPINNERS AND KEEPING ROCKS OFF THE FIELD. I think most people don't use 4x SR weak pokes because while good, none of them are absolutely out-fucking-standing. None of them really motivate you to incorporate spinners and such into your team. This one does. If rocks didn't exist I can say with some confidence that this thing would be banned from OU. (last gen's OU, I guess).

That's very encouraging. I've had high expectations for Ulgamoth and really hoped that it wouldn't suffer the same fate as Yanmega, one of my favorite 4th gen Pokemon. That is, left to disuse due to the crippling 4x SR weakness despite being an amazing Pokemon otherwise. Rapid Spinning has been rather easy for me using Doryuuzu since it's so immediately threatening, so I'll definitely try Ulgamoth out, probably with either HP Rock, Electric, or Psychic.

Underwhelming for me so far, though this could change if i actually design a team around it. So far, the SR weak puts a LOT of pressure to go for a sweep before I'm ready, because I might not be able to bring it in safely more than once. It doesn't help that its STABs suck and it's still at least checked by Blissey, unless Urgamosu has Sub and Bliss doesn't have Stoss.

It also requires you retain weather control, as you need to get two Butterfly Dances to beat Dory in the sand.

And of course, you need spinnners.

To me, that's too much team support for one pokemon - good teams should not be forced into supporting one pokemon, otherwise it becomes highly inflexible.

On that Defensive spread, you should consider running 44 Speed EVs. This allows you to outrun positive Natured Base 116's after 1 BD and Choice Scarf Positive Natured Base 100 Pokemon after 2.
