What Anime should I watch?

When I was 13-16 I enjoyed so many animes that inspired me like Death Note, Bleach, Code Geass, Gundam 00, Naoki Urawasa's Monster, Higurashi no nako koro ni, D.Grayman, Fruits Basket, Trigun and Lucky Star

Since July of 2011, I'm 17 and I haven't seen a great anime or read a good manga since Borders closed :( I need recommendations of great animes/mangas!

Thanks^^

Steins;Gate. This this this. It's based on a visual novel made by 5pb and Nitroplus. Very very interesting time travel story that is actually logical and makes sense scientifically (in some ways).

Also: Clannad and Clannad: After Story are amazing. It may be a Shojo, but boy no man can survive that series without shedding a tear.

Lastly, Gurren Lagann. The most manliest show I have ever seen in my life.

Those are all my top 3 rated anime.

This.

It's not a perfect series (there is one moment that's genuinely bad, but mainly it's just that it takes a while to get going so you have to be patient), but overall it is beyond amazing. Highly recommended.

Also, if you haven't seen Fullmetal Alchemist yet, do it. Probably the best shonen I've ever seen.

I second Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, it's just such a well-written plot line with awesome action. Bakuman and Beelzebub are some of the new series that you may want to check out. The first one is about a teenage duo trying to become a top manga artist (it's more interesting than it sounds) and the latter is about a delinquent raising a devil's baby.

If you haven't seen Gintama, I'd also recommend it - it's quite hilarious and touching :d

The World God Only Knows is good if you're looking for something funny, it's a personal favorite of mine.

Side note: The same dudes that made Death Note are the ones behind Bakuman, so yes check that out too if you thought DN was good.

Is it just me or is Clannad overrated? Sure it had its good moments and the After Story's ending was pretty good and touching, but I felt that it wasn't worth watching the entire first season of fillers and random arcs just for the last 4-5 episodes. Then again, it's acclaimed for a reason and it's probably just me!

Anything from Ufotable will probably touch your interests. I find their animation to be pretty top notch and their writers are no slouches. I personally recommend Fate/Zero from last season or Kara no Kyoukai, a 7 part movie series.

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood was pretty good. The animation I thought wasn't the best, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Yeah Clannad is horribly overrated imo.

I like a lot of SHAFT stuff, like Bakemonogatari, Arakawa Under the Bridge

I also like a lot of Studio 4 C, Mind Game, Tekkon Kinkreet

Baccano is a must watch for basically any anime fan imo...

If you're into slice of life I enjoyed Genshiken 1 and 2 a lot, seeing as everyone already knows about lucky star

Soul Eater is the only anime I've ever watched from start to finish, so I'm going to go ahead and recommend that.

Cowboy Bebop is a really great "adult" anime with "adult" themes that everyone should watch. It's short, easy to watch, entertaining, has great music, everything. The dub is amazing too so you don't have to worry about a bad dub if you don't like subtitles.

But just because you are 17 now doesn't mean you should ignore anime or manga that is aimed at younger audiences! Check out some of the Studio Ghibli movies or stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho like Veedrok suggested.

Outlaw Star and Last Exile are two of my favorite anime that haven't been mentioned. And Last Exile just got a random second season/storyline thing that started not too long ago (Last Exile: Ginyoku no Famu), tho I haven't really gotten much into that yet.

As for manga, Claymore (ongoing) and Eyeshield 21 (finished) are my two favorites by far.

try to describe what you're recommending

a title alone isn't much of a recommendation (nor does it really make this a worthwhile thread)

It's already been mentioned, but both Cowboy Beebop and the Cowboy Beebop movie are great.

Also, my all time favorite anime has always been Trigun. Its in a similar gritty style of animation as Cowboy Beebop. Long story short its a futuristic spaghetti-western that focuses on Vash The Stampede and his various misadventures trying not to get killed and not kill anyone while having a "60,000,000,000$$" (sixty billion "double dollars") bounty on his head. I was very literally hooked the moment I caught my first glimpse of this series on superlatenight Adult Swim years and years ago. I've honestly never been as addicted to any other anime series as this. I re-watch the whole series from beginning to end every year or so. Its definitely worth a look, especially since its on Netflix now.

This. Steins;Gate is amazing

I also recommend Reborn(If you like comedy. Its very funny and has great fight scenes as the story progresses.)

If you have not done so already, go and watch every Miyazaki ever made.
Seriously.
After that perhaps you would enjoy a few of the fallowing.

Speaking of Nitroplus, I would recommend Saya no uta. That is probably the best thing they have ever produced. This would be something you mite check out similar to your Higurashi no nako koru ni and if you are looking for something tamer, Madoka could work as it seems to be quite the rage lately.
There is of course Umineko no Naku Koro ni...
I'd go with Saya though....

If you want the next lucky star, look no further then Nichijou. Slice of life nothing happens stuff. Some older anime like ichigo mashimaro would be fine to as a starting place. Of course azumanga daioh needs mention.

People have mentioned cowboy bebop and that is a safe bet for a good anime.

Completely unrelated some what, I'd recommend anything ever done by Nobuyuki Fukumoto if you like suspence and gambling even a little.

if you want to watch some really good anime movies, check out

cbebop is not that impressive, watch baccano (ps it has better music)

nichijou, Working, and Minami-ke since you liked Lucky Star

renosaur can you please post the name of your third film? (also the fourth i guess because the link is broken)

i love the girl who leapt through time but i feel like i shouldn't cause it's kinda a lil bit girly but the soundtrack is really good so everyone can just step off!! (also the english dub is surprisingly high quality)

i think i've seen 5 centimetres per second but i'm not sure and i don't want to ask in too much detail in case i spoil... is it the one with the trains?
