What is the hardest Video Game you have ever played?

I guess this means I need to play Contra. It's going to be a tough challenge to be harder than beating Asteroids, though. That game is insane.

Seriously, though, Doom is a rather challenging game (real men play Nightmare difficulty).

Crash Bandicoot and the Wrath of Cortex, it was so hard I was defeated before even opening it (actually I hate Crash and never WANTED to open it).

But seriously Contra and Contra 3 are both pretty easy once you get them down, but when you first play its insane and you never want to play it again. I love Contra so I keep playing it (and buying it, Contra 4 on DS get it). The hardest I've played is probably F-Zero GX, it starts out simple, and I thought I was gonna be doing good and unlock all the ships, etc. Nope I got to the second story and couldn't do anything beyond that, I reached my plateau. Worst $50 I ever spent and I've pretty much hated all kinds of racers since then.

I could name quite a few games from my younger years, but whether they were hard or I was just incompetent is up for debate.

I doubt many of you have played this, but I'll have to say Riven: The Sequel to Myst. If people thought Myst was hard, then they'll find Riven insane. For one, there are no evident clues like there were in the original. Many of them are based on common sense, found in a few journal entries or the god damn background. For instance, there were these spheres that had a number in them (in Rivanese, so you'd have to learn the number system). Each of them corresponded to a sound and an animal, and each animal had a symbol that portrayed them. In order to know what the symbol was, you'd have to look at the sphere in some sort of perspective. Seeing you had no idea what the correspondant animal looked like, unless you met him before and remember his sound, it's really difficult to actually see the symbol.

Contra, Super Ghouls and Ghosts; I never beat them without cheating. And fucking Battletoads. And fucking Ninja Gaiden. Jesus Christ.

The only very hard game recall beating was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It definitely isn't as hard as the aforementioned ones but hey I was like 4. :(

Hmm I wonder which...
(On a side note that is actually pretty much the easiest game in the series. )

I have played one of the Touhou games (Perfect Cherry Blossom) actually! Most of those "bullet hell" style shooters are extremely hard anyway.

Well, seeing as how this is a mainly Pokémon board, I'm going to have to say the Battle Tower in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Hell, competitive Pokémon is no cakewalk either!

As for actual games, the Metroid Prime series was somewhat challenging, due to the fact that they were the 2nd and 3rd 3-D games I played. And it's Metroid. I don't mean I was like "awhh z0mg how do i bet the parasite quen", but rather getting 100% Suit Upgrades and Logbook Scans. Without using those little walkthroughs either (though I admit, I checked Metroid 2002 to see how the hell to beat the Invisible Drone in Prime I).

Super Mario Brothers : The Lost Levels was surprisingly difficult as well. It may not be on the same level as some other platformers out there, but it was pretty damn tough for a Mario game. The spotty hit detection in 1985 or so didn't help either.

All of the Ninja Gaiden games are pretty tricky. DMC3 on the toughest difficulty is also hard, I actually didn't find the original Contra, or Contra 3 as tough as the 3D-ish one for PlayStation 2, although they were all hard (I'd say PS2 Contra > Contra > Contra 3 in terms of difficulty).

Also, those absurd 3D adventure games like The Crystal Key. Wowzers, those are tough.

Thinking about it i don't think I could ever imagine playing a gta game without cheat codes. I mean the first thing you do when you start playign gta is put on a weapons and health/armor cheat. Without codes that would be one of the hardest games ever. But it would also lose a lot of luster.

Nethack took me around three years to complete, but once it was beaten it's easier since.

As far as sheer reaction time... I'm thinking joust on the original atari... I think I got to level 70 or something like that... my mother beat me though, and got to stage 150+, she was nuts about it xD

I'd have to go with Riven. That was the only game I've ever actually felt proud of myself for beating without any assistance or hints.
Jesus man were you high? That game makes no sense sober! Seriously I couldn't even beat it with a walkthrough :/

OMG pokeman yellow. (LOL)

X-wing flight simulator by lucasarts (the original one) was insanely hard.
Dark Forces 1 was insane too, those kell dragons didn't fuck around.

haha I can't even beat that song on hard mode

I've beaten that game on every difficulty level. I can get halfway through Jordan on Expert. I would probably have finished every song on every difficulty if my roommate hadn't ruined the game for me.

lol I can't imagine getting that good at that game. I got to the set with psychobilly freakout on hard mode and could only beat like 2 of the songs, so I gave up and just recently I tried to do a few songs on hard and got my ass kicked, so I've pretty much retired from guitar hero for now.

Well, I guess 6-7 years of actual guitar kinda helped me breeze through that game.
