What is the hardest Video Game you have ever played?

I'd have to to vote for two games here:

F-Zero GX (as many people in this thread have noted)
Beatmania IIDX

Although in the latter case, it only applies if you're playing stuff on the higher end of the scale...

Yeah the mario lost levels or whatever it's called is really hard. after years I got to 8-1, then I couldn't defeat it after that. I deleted it by accidents and now whenever I've played it I'm stuck on some level 5 stage.

I looooooooove Mario Bros. Lost Levels. It's sadistic fun, that's what it is. I remember the first time I beat 8-4 back on All-Stars for SNES... I was ecstatic at finally having finished it, but then I realized that it started from the beginning again, and was ever HARDER. And yes, I beat that too. Thanks god for All-Stars letting you save.

Agreed. Those levels gave you a run for your money. I never did beat all the hard levels though, I just got SO tired of them.

Anyone remember those 8 special levels in Super Mario World? One was called Tubular or something where the entire level involved you going through it while under the effect of the P-Balloon?

Sorry if this isn't the kind of game you guys are looking for but beating 4 Second Frenzy in sudden death mode for the first time was probably one of the hardest things I have ever done. I have played it so much now that i can breeze through but that first time was insane.

Why do all of you guys find Lost Levels to be so difficult? Sure, it took me a few tries, but it certainly wasn't overwhelming.

i remember that, i always got stuck on outrageous, easily the hardest lvl in the game (form what i remember)

Well, for one I was only like 6-7 when I played it :P It's probably a lot easier now.

Yeah, I remember Tubular! That one was the one that got me stuck. I did end up beating it though :P They were all named after dead expressions IIRC, like "Gnarly" and "Tubular".

Yoshi's Island also had secret levels too, if you got a perfect score on all the other levels. Mind, this was the GBA version, and it wasn't really that challenging IMO, with maybe the exception of the very last secret level. Soooo many spikes >.>

I always found the original Contra hard at first, but I loved it and kept trying, and now I can generally beat it without the code.

Ghouls N'Ghosts is tough.

I never could beat Kid Icarus as a kid, and even now I have trouble with it.

Fire Emblem was an awesome game, but really hard for me, because I wouldn't let any of my units die:)

It's not that hard, if you start to not care in the last level. Path of Radiance is the easiest (of the ones released in America) by far, it doesn't even have a huge boss to kill.

The last level of Fire Emblem was hard for me. The simultaneous bosses before Nergal was really annoying and hard to fight against. Elite Beat Agents on the final difficulty was pretty hard, too.

Yeah, those were wicked strange. After you beat all 8 the entire world changed all its colors... so weird.

Gran Turismo 3 and 4 are extremely hard in the later races and driving missions. Some of them require fine tuning your car and racing it for 3 hours straight, going to pit stops etc. All it takes is for you to screw up once and you're last since the computer follows a near-perfect racing line. It's borderline impossible to get 100% completion on those games.
Hell even the Driving License tests can be pretty frustrating.
super licenses without a wheel.... oh my GOD

Super Castlevania IV, man that's annoying. Stage IV especially, with some fucked up rotating room and a giant psychedelic tube you have to walk through with Skeletons jumping around everywhere. I especially hated Death, he's definitely not as hard as he used to be. Hell, Death in PoR is infantile compared to this guy.

Still a great game though. steelick's score hit the nail on the head!

Descent on Insane difficulty. (Wonder if anybody ever played Descent in this forum)

Imagine coralling robots that shoot homing missiles that kill in roughly 5 hits.

Pokemon Stadium 2 is the most difficult Pokemon game, point blank. Crappy rentals, hax to the extreme, and six crappy items to choose from. My brother fought against the computer with a team he made himself, and lost. He was swept by an Omanyte with two ancientpower boosts.

I'm gonna go with the original Zelda for NES. Its not that the fighting is difficult or anything its just you cant find a damn thing and you would end up in level 8 before you could find level 2

good old nes days, when walkthroughs and faqs online didnt exist and the best way to get through popular vgames was via word of mouth.

we used to exchange tricks & codes about nes games in the school cafeteria, it was a different era.

(I still remember where everything is hidden in zelda 1 because of it)

lost levels wasn't a good game at all, you had to know that certain things were coming before you did them. thats the mark of bad level design

also lol at so many people saying SMW was even remotely hard

Super Smash Brothers: Melee.

After 67 tries, i finally beat All-Star on Very Hard mode. I'm pretty good at the game, and even on off days i can beat Classic/Adventure VH without losing a stock, but dear christ. I dont know if its me, the no recovery, the game, or what.

That was hands down the most grueling moment of my life.

Learn to wavedash. :naughty:

I could learn to wavedash, but i like being at the fence. I can do everything but, and when Brawl comes out, presumably online, i'll pick up and shut up. I dont see the point, as no one out of the 50ish people i play with on and off know how/care to use it (even i can waveland), and even the local tournaments i go to have a handful of people who wavedash, but dont L-Cancel and get fucked up.

Also, any Onimusha game, Issen mode. Only being able to kill enemies with an extremely hard-to-time critical hit maneuver? on bosses too? i'll pass.
