why people act the way they do on the internet

Hey, it's skiddle here. Most of you probably don't know me, and if that's the case, I'm lucky. However, my lack of "social status" on Smogon doesn't make the message I have prepared any less important. Kind of tl;dr, but I'm sure you can manage.

The last few weeks it finally dawned on me how the confidentiality of the internet changes the way people behave towards other internet users. It's so easy to be a complete asshole to people you don't know, right... especially when there is little to no consequence for it. My question always was "why?" though. Is it because it's fun? Is it because it makes you feel superior? I have a few theories and I want to see what the rest of you think.

REASON ONE: The person isn't capable of treating real people like shit, so they do it on the internet.

This idea is what I would like to refer to as the "angry nerd" and there seems to be a lot of them here on Smogon. Anyways, my guess is that these angry nerds aren't either physically or emotionally capable of mistreating real people. This is because they aren't prepared to deal with the consequences that come with being an asshole. They either aren't strong enough to handle a person who can fight back, or they aren't brave enough to face the repercussions that come with their actions.

If you're this kind of person, you should just shut up and know your place. Pent up frustration with your weakness in real life is no reason to take it out on people you don't know, especially hiding behind the relative safety of the internet. You're not impressing anybody.

REASON TWO: The person is given some sort of power or improved status on the internet, and feels the need to abuse it.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of these people on the internet too. Whenever someone is given some sort of indication that they might be better than the average internet user, it goes straight to their head and they start power tripping.

There are many ways to appear "better" than other people on the internet. Be it level in a game, post count on a forum, whatever, no matter how good of a person you are, it doesn't mean anything unless you've got the numbers by your name to prove it. All these statistics lead to elitism. I'm sure you've seen those amusing Trou Du Cul threads of angry new members saying "FUKC SMOGAN I QUIT". Usually it's because we're all total dicks to them. Be it because you have some badges, or thousands of posts, or whatever, I'm pretty sure most of the people here at Smogon think they're way better than those newbies, right?

For the most part, no, you're not. Strip away all the flashy forum shit like post counts and whatnot, and you're just as good as they are. We're all people here, just because someone joined Smogon five minutes ago doesn't mean they're scum compared to someone who's been here several years. This is a fucking pokemon website. In the grande scheme of things, this won't matter.

This brings me to my next point. There is a very, very obvious feeling of contempt between your everyday forum users and the mods here at Smogon. First of all, mods, these people aren't your underlings just because you can lock threads and hand out infractions. And everyone else, stop acting like the mods are your Gods and maybe things would be less hierarchal around here. I'm pretty sure there is nothing more annoying for them than having people trying to kiss your ass all the time. (haha guilty) Treat each other like fellow human beings for fuck sake.

REASON THREE: You are a troll.

I'm not going to lie, trolling people is pretty fun. The internet makes trolling so much easier for two reasons. First, you remain semi-anonymous and can say whatever you want without having to worry about its effect on your personal life. Secondly, word spreads fast on the internet, so if you do a good job you might get your 10 minutes of fame.

Surprising considering the size of the Smogon community, there are quite a few trolls (again, see Trou). This is somewhat bothersome to me as I care quite a lot about Smogon, despite what it looks like. One thing people don't seem to realize is that unlike cancer or something, a troll goes away if you ignore it! Isn't that something? By reacting to a troll, you're just giving it more power (and probably laughs too) so simply don't reply to those stupid troll threads. Do your part and help destroy stupidity on the internet!

EPENIS

Ok, one last thing I want to rant about. All of these things have one reason in common, and it's what is referred to as the ePenis. This is like your power on the internet. The more badass you think you are, the more power you have, or the more "famous" you become, the bigger your ePenis becomes.

Oh wait, the size of your ePenis has absolutely no effect on how cool you are in real life... that's too bad. Quit trying to prove how big your ePenis is, because you're actually just showing everyone how insecure you are in the process. If you actually believe that anything you do on the internet will have any positive outcome on your real life, sorry, but you're wrong.

So anyways, my whole point in this thread is I want to know how you feel about this matter, and how it affects the Smogon Community. I like Smogon, I like the people here, but seriously, you people treat each other like shit all the time. I try and be civil, but some of you are just impossible to talk with.

I agree with reason one. As stereotypical as it sounds, many of the people who play pokemon are considered the "nerdy" kids as far as social standings are concerned, so by using the anonymity of the internet they act inappropriately to give themselves a feeling of having some power of control over someone else.

Also, the person could just be mean in real life as well, in which case there is no reason why that wouldn't change on the internet.

man this is just like you and your rant about "weeaboos and wiggers"

you're right, but what is your point?

Did you just compare and contrast internet trolls to cancer?

I guess the answer to your question would be that you have no restrictions over the internet. bans, blockings, ect. can you stop you for a bit but its not going to keep you away in the long run. Nothing comes back to haunt you in real life. Still, why have 10 minutes of stupid fun when you can become a part of a community for a lifetime?

man this is just like you and your rant about "weeaboos and wiggers"

you're right, but what is your point?

My point is that I know smogon is better than this.

I'm pretty sure you're all great people in real life, but seriously, you guys should read some of the shit you post and be like "would I actually say that to a person's face?" Nah, didn't think so.

I have read a psychology book that stated the only thing that keeps people from treating others like shit is a fear of repercussion. The consequences of treating people poorly on the Internet is minimum in most cases. That is why people act that way. Of course the reasons you listed aren't wrong either.

This reminds me of the time a friend of mine tried trolling Sirlin's forums, but the guy just found his personal information, threatened him with it, and generally just delivered the same message this thread is for.

I completely disagree.
You are a complete azzhol3!!!
My ePinis is HUGe!!
No one is a tuff as me, and you can fucking bring it on if you think you are!!!!

(sarcasm)

Man, do I agree with threads like these, but unfortunately, in my experience the people who really need to understand these things either don't read it ("tl;dr") or accuse you of being a whiny bitch for more laughs and things don't change. Oh well, at least a fair amount of people do get this, it's just that the assholes are louder.

Man, I wish that worked in real life.

you know i'd be a hell of a lot more sympathetic if you weren't be so horribly self-righteous in your approach

it is also pretty transparent that this appears an hour or two after your tantrum on #smogon

we couldn't decide how to put it to you so the best i can give you is the stream of our consciousness:

[02:07] <@cookie> skiddle is a dumb firebotter
[02:07] <%jumpluff> hes hardly the dumbest person on smogon
[02:07] <%jumpluff> yeah he should keep out of firebot
[02:07] <dak> yeah
[02:07] <dak> he surel isnt
[02:07] <%jumpluff> but that doesnt make him a bad person
[02:07] <%jumpluff> just a clueless one
[02:07] <%Vampy34> he needs to learn and no one is really helping him -.-

[02:07] <%jumpluff> im saying in generazl
[02:07] <%jumpluff> -z
[02:07] <+Az> what
[02:07] <+Az> oh
[02:07] <+Az> ffs
[02:07] <%jumpluff> lol
[02:07] <%jumpluff> sorry
[02:07] <%jumpluff> i typo a lot =x
[02:07] <+Az> it's ok
[02:07] <+Earthworm> lol
[02:07] <%jumpluff> with z in it
[02:08] <%jumpluff> someone should try to help him rather than hurting him repeatedly no ones going to throttle him into being a good user
[02:08] * darkie is now known as dAFKie
[02:08] <%Vampy34> yea
[02:08] <+Earthworm> how can he be helped
[02:08] <+Earthworm> i may try
[02:08] <+Az> the thing is it is the sort of thing you can't hold someone's hand through
[02:08] <+Az> this is why people advise lurking
[02:08] <+Az> a lot of life's lessons are learnt on your own
[02:09] <+Az> fitting into a social circle is one of those lessons

[02:09] <%Vampy34> i think the biggest help he can get is jsut to have peole stop puttin ghim down
[02:09] <%jumpluff> he just needs to be given that advice
[02:09] <%jumpluff> and
[02:09] <%jumpluff> to be told
[02:09] <%jumpluff> not everyone hates him
[02:09] <%jumpluff> and to get a thicker skin (i know im being a hypocrite)
[02:09] <@cookie> be he's been given advice
[02:09] <%jumpluff> has someone gone up to him quietly and said
[02:10] <%jumpluff> 'hey skiddle no offence but you should lurk more, its not you as ap erson its the fact youre clueless about smogon'
[02:10] <%jumpluff> but in a nice way
[02:10] <%jumpluff> ??
[02:10] <%jumpluff> posting 'lurk more you stupid fuck' wont help
[02:10] <@cookie> besides, it's not hard to get yourself into the community just by taking a step back and looking at how you appear to everyone else

this thread isn't about people being dicks on the internet, it's about you feeling victimised

What about people that are friendly, honest, and generally kind to others over the internet?

You also have people like me, who aren't really assholes or treat people like shit, but still feel the need to lie and try to make themselves look cool for other internet users. It's not really a testament to how much of a "jerk" that person is, but more about the human's innate desire for everyone to like them and recognize them. I'd like to think I've since moved on from this problem, but in my past time here I've been guilty on several occasions of telling stories to try to make myself look cool.

Anyway my point is, would you group people like this into the other groups you mentioned above? Or would they fall into a separate category of "Nice but Insecure" people?

then i suppose you can take this as the assurance that you will never fit in

you may as well stop wasting your time and fuck off elsewhere

Congratulations, you just summed up the Internet in one post. Please see the King of the Web for your cookie :p

In all seriousness, yeah, this is the way it is nearly everywhere I frequent on the Internet. Not a whole lot new. Sad, but not new.

as long as we are comparing things to cancer, skiddle: you are to badges what Terry Fox was to running across Canada.

ha! I'll never become one of those.... those... things

Well anyways, I got the reaction I expected. Thanks (to some of you) for pretty much proving my point entirely :)

Back on topic, could we please shift the attention to smogon as a whole (instead of just me) because seriously, I think Smogon kicks ass, just some of the people here are ridiculous.

I don't know if you were expecting rainbows and unicorns when you decided to insult the general population of Smogon, but at this point you're getting from people exactly what you deserve.

I have more respect for the stupidest cretins online who happen to be friendly and generally nice to everybody that the plentiful of people who don't see anything wrong with being a jerk to someone because they perceive their 'dumbness' warrants it.

I can only be a jerk to jerks.

But, just like real life, the internet is also survival of the fittest, with its alphas, betas and omegas. Luckily for some, this other world allows them to change category.

@ Surgo: I'm not insulting the people of smogon, I'm calling them out on their behaviour.

@ Vineon: I'm glad you understand.

Still, why have 10 minutes of stupid fun when you can become a part of a community for a lifetime?
You could do both, I wouldn't be surprised if a decent amount of internet trolls are actually part of another online community. How many people on smogon troll other sites I wonder...

I'm sorry, but your opening post basically expresses the sentiments that you personally face at the hand of this community as opposed to the general consensus of experience within this community. I've seen some of your posts in the past, and they are quite out there. When you complain about not getting a badge or pestering the administration of this site, what do you expect? That they will simply adhere to all your wishes and grant them?

I think we have to direct this topic toward you because its basically an expression of your resentment to those that shun you from the community. If you honestly believe that this is a topic expressing the experience of all community members, you are sadly mistaken. Rather than complain about the injustices that exists in multitude toward you, why not understand WHY they happen. How come I haven't experienced the same sentiments as you toward this community?

The bottom line is that there will always be people on the internet that get on your nerves. Their reaction to your presence ultimately depends on how you conduct yourself in those situations. I think that's something you need to learn; rather than projecting your negativity, assess the faults in some of your posts and arguments.

While Skiddle is correct in some of his statements, particularly about trolling, you're trying to get the wrong Idea by here.
See, a good member that is actually commited to being a part of Smogon for years would already be more aware than anyone of what to do, and concruently, what not to do. These members are the prime role models to the newer members, and of course know that their actions will shape Smogon in years to come. The reason Smogon is so good right now is because of all the contributors, Tutors and Team raters. They are thanked for their work by getting badged, since they're helping to improve the community. Mind you, attitude is a big part of this. If you act like an immature kid who puts other needs ahead of that of the community, you won't get noticed. I'd know since I'm speaking from experience.

No matter where you go, there will always be a few Jackasses who feel the need to ruin your fun, but you have to prove your superiority over them. These people are, like you said, most likely people who cannot abuse others in real life, so the internet is their secret place to wreak havoc onto others. Keeping Silent is the way to go, and they'll shut right up.

I'm sure that like me, you have some members who piss you off, I myself am trying to better myself now and to make good with these guys, and I can sense that you want to as well. It takes motivation, but with that comes reward... going on shoddy only having 4 people say hi to you is reward enough, and this can only lead to bigger and better thing so long as you continue being better. You're on your way, but improvements of course can, and should be made.

Shut the fuck up, you fucking retard!

See, because I said that online, I don't have to worry about you and 10 of your buddies kicking my ass in a dark alley. Oh, and sorry to whoever read that and thought I called them a retard :)
