Anyways yamakirisei, the thing about Swalot is that because it's more physically stable, it's movements are more restricted, making it harder to justify drastic left-right motion. Most of its minimal left/right doesn't come from leaning, but from its "feet" actually bringing it across.

I guess the better way to explain it is that Goomy's left/right motion doesn't make sense to me because the top half seems so solid while the bottom half is too fluid, stretching around to follow where the head goes. The differences are too drastic, like two puzzle pieces that don't fit. Of course, the straight up/straight down motion doesn't suffer from this, which is why I used it in my rare animation.

ito, I wouldn't mind seeing your version of the finalized animation, although you may want to cut down on what you have planned. Almost all animations have a few loops of a "standard" animation with only one loop of a "rare" animation, so including so much may not be the best idea. Like I based mine on Grimer's animation, with three loops of the flattening followed by one loop of expanding and mouth wobbling (since that part's the best).

Also SwiftSamurott, I animate in Pivot Animator (version 4 required). It's free and it works well for this purpose.

Well here is a final edit of Fennekin (unless you see something wrong with it) It should be cleaned up now. I also shortened and skinnified the body a bit, re-drew the tail, and a few other slight edits.

It's looking great, but there's still the problem with the amount of useless colors. It can't be called a sprite if it has so many and so similar to each other.
EDIT: it's faster if i just QC it for you: you erased a few whites on the outside, but there's still like 10 yellows when you should have only one
 
That Fennekin has way too many colours, three for that amount of red is more than fair. Plus a flat line on the body and those skinny legs make me feel like I should call Animal Services. That neck doesn't look so fantastic either.

I see no reason to take that QC.

I think there's no need to have more than about 9-10 colors on such a simple Pokemon like Fennekin. Maybe try defining the colors first and just sticking to those would be better.
 
Sparkle, if your sprite is to be discarded in the end, how about trying again based on this one image?

It's just sugimori's art with its head flipped horizontally, but i think it's good enough for a battle pose, isn't it? :D
 
Made it transparent but your sprite isn't in a 96x96 image so I wasn't sure how to place it. I guess someone can move or crop it if they need to.

I doesn't look like it when you look at it from the front, but actually, The "flame" in the right ear (our right) goes out in front of the face. Just there:

So I modified it to go out in front of the cheeks, that kinda go behind his ears:

So yeah, I drew these cheeks behind the ears.

I know there's still a lot of work to do on them, but as I was working on it, my pc crashed...


edit: Starting to sprite mega abomasnow right now, so I'll reserve it (just so nobody does the work before me like for delphox :D).

It's not just what I think, I gave a spriter better than me a veto on all sprites going into animation as well. Although yeah I'm really the only one choosing static sprites right now. But I've done my best at it, and I've tried to be fair when replacing sprites.Remember this: for every person that may bother to make a comment on WIP sprites, there will be five others who won't post because they don't want to be bothered. Even worse there are some people who have no idea how to sprite but will comment for the sake of seeing their new favourite in pixel form. I've also ignored some shaky sprites in the past and it bit me in the butt later, I've gotten better.It was my QC on that Fennekin yes but once. Don't quit at your first QC let me show you what is happening. Shaymin Sky and Fennekin are the same height

Now sprite height isn't an exact science here (are tufts even part of height really), but the thing I want to bring attention to is the legs. I do believe I used this as a reference during my QC because Fennekin has smaller legs, and there is only so much more smaller you can go until.

So yeah Fennkin's legs are fine, we are working with pixels and sometimes the exact details just can't be done. Now yes Fennekin does need some QC since it's not going onto animation but that QC isn't going to be that big.

Don't take this a sign to quit, take it as a sign to get better. I've done some bad stuff in this thread alone and others have showed me the right way, and I've improved in quality and at the speed of which I churn out sprites.

I should probably also post this tag team with Elcheeso we did on Noscium's sprite

Thanks for your suggestions, everyone. And Layell, I understand what you are saying now. Here is a compromise. I cut down on colors (thank you yamakirisei for palette) and fattened the legs, but they aren't as fat as before. I would really love if you'd use it, I think it looks nice, but you don't have to.

Since XY is almost out, I'm hoping to see a good Mega Gardevoir backsprite soon so I can start animating it (or at least after the QC is done). That thing is classy as hell.

I may have to start narrowing down my signature a little more. Sad.

nice legit. I think it can use alittle body movement. at least on the wings. maybe slightly bending his legs. but what you have so far is great
 
Absol's front sprite is moving its head, tail, and front legs, but the backsprite is moving the head, tail, front, and back legs. Kinda feels inconsistent when one has the back legs moving and the other doesn't. I agree that the wings could also use some movement, but I think it looks nice so far.
 
The motions are taken directly from Absol, so everything except for the wings are definitely correct.

As both of you have said, the wings could use some movement. Since regular Absol doesn't have wings, I didn't bother moving them. My rationale was mostly that I didn't really want to, since wings are easily the hardest things to animate in any sprite. I'll admit that it does look a little stiff (or more like MAJESTICALLY FIRM AND UNYIELDING), so I suppose I may update it with wing movement sometime.
 
Absolite: Makes absol megaevolve into Mega Absol, greatly increasing his stats, giving him awesomesauce wings, and inflicting him with thunder wave
 
According to the official site, Absol's "wings" are really just fur standing on end. That shouldn't be as bad, right?
