The concept that came to mind was how Lance and Dragonite have been used in NPC teams to embody the classic fire/ice/lighting element set. I liked the idea of attempting to tie a type that currently doesn't have much of an identity besides 'powerful' to other types central to the experience. However, I also thought it was important to highlight less conventional elements as well, showcasing what sets pokemon apart from other jrpgs as well as what connects them. I chose to go with Poison/Psychic/Fighting as my oddball set.
Dragonite
- Fire Blast
- Blizzard
- Thunder
- Toxic
Outside of the attacks for the standard elements, I needed to pick which was to be most prominent of the other types. I went with Poison.
Jolteon
- Pin Missile
- Thunderbolt
- Double Kick
- Thunder Wave
The Electric type from the traditional set. Since the concept is partially the identity of Pokemon as a whole, I also wanted to include something with a strong evolution focus.
Arcanine
- Rest
- Body Slam
- Substitute
- Flamethrower
A majestic, "Legendary" fire-type that would later pick up Extreme Speed, a move associated with Dragonite because of the events in Johto.
Starmie
- Ice Beam
- Psychic
- Recover
- Hydro Pump
The transition point between the two trios, as both Water and Psychic. I originally had Slowbro here as something slightly more capable of resembling a dragon, but I had both a Fire Stone evo and a Thunder Stone evo so might as well have an extra mechanical connection for that set.
Arbok
- Glare
- Wrap
- Toxic
- Earthquake
Of the many Poison-types available (hey, half the concept is that Poison is a core part of the games' identity), I went with the most reptilian one.
Machamp
- Seismic Toss
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Counter
Similar to wanting a mon strongly tied to evolution as a whole for Jolteon, a team representing what the games are about probably isn't complete without a trade evolution. I also wanted to include Seismic Toss or Night Shade somewhere since Dragon's only move at the time is also a fixed-damage attack.
