Your Job

Right, so I don't really spend much time on Smogon anymore. There are a few reasons for this - boredom with Pokemon being one of them, but just my general business also being pretty high up there! I work six days a week, and don't really have much time for all the things I'd like to do.

This got me to thinking about people in general: I know some of you through these boards/IRC/Netbattle or whatever, but I don't really know all about you. A lot of us have jobs, some of us spend a very large amount of time every week at these jobs, and while they may not define us in any serious way, I'm still kind of curious: what's your job? Do you work part-time? Full-time? Do you like your job?

I guess I'll start off: I work for a company called LivClean. I do door-to-door soliciting, offering a service for a free water heater upgrade to high efficiency. The pay-structure is entirely commission, but I love it. I'm fairly good at what I do, so I find commission to be a very rewarding pay structure. I'm currently in the process of putting a team together, as well. I work from 1200-2000 Monday - Saturday, and sometimes I work on Sunday, as well. One of the perks of the job that I really appreciate is that I can take days off whenever I want. I just have to call my team leader and let him know I won't be coming in. With these direct marketing companies, the turnover rate is ridiculously high. I would say that 85% of the people who come in to work with the company do not last longer than a week. It is not an easy job, and there are a LOT of people who can't make the cut, for whatever reason. However, once you've worked there for a while, and established a reputation in the office, you can kinda do whatever you want. I'm one of the highest producing agents at the office, so I don't really have to worry about them firing me for taking days off.

So yeah, what about your jobs? I'm actually particularly curious to know if there's anyone else who works in sales, but I'm sure a lot of you guys have really interesting jobs. Lay it on me!

I work for Tenon Group (London) as an audit junior, while training with them for my professional ACCA qualification (qualifying in three years' time). I attend courses every Monday (usually), and work 9:15-5:30 otherwise. Tenon is the 9th largest accounting and business service company in the UK (by fees) and has 49 offices around the country.

My particular office specializes in the film industry. We basically audit and offer tax advice to all the major studios; any recent movie (wholly or partly) made in the UK, you name it, we worked on it. Our tax department attracts many high profile celebrities, helping them with tax mitigation services. Of course, we also work with all sorts of clients from a smorgasboard of different industries.

I only started on Friday 4th September, but my colleagues have made me feel very welcome. I have been working at a client's office this week (a film financing company), and I am learning as I go. Honestly, I enjoy everything I do, and the people I work with are great fun; they make me laugh all the time. My commute takes about an hour, but I consider it a minor inconvenience because I love my job!

I'm only 16, so I work part time at a computer software company called Synesis IT as the guy who files all the incoming/outcoming shipments, as well as the storage counter. It's a real behind-the-scenes job, and I only work on weekends. The company itself is really quite professional, as there is an awesome office and many great employees (plus free coffee). The work isn't too demanding, but it requires a lot of attention to detail and one mistake could be extremely major. I've only started a month ago, so I have yet to prove myself, but I'm happy for the opportunity and I'm sure that I'll make the most of it.

My job? Professional layabout, drinker, and university student. I'll probably have to get another job soon, but for now I'm done fine.

I work as a dietary aide, but I'm going to quit soon since it's annoying and I have to lose time off of studies. I'm only 16 and in like 3 APs and the rest are honors. Plus, junior year is killing me. I also take an art class as an elective but my teacher's a complete ass. Failed me on two homeworks since I didn't list one thing on the assignment.

I work as a janitor because my parents in their infinite wisdom decided that I should work my way through college. I started my senior year in high school (two years ago), and since I had relatively few expenses then and I get paid way too much for the little I do, I saved most of it. I added that to what I got from my grandmother's inheritance, invested it, made roughly 1000% on it, so I'm quitting next February, which is when I can take that money out of stocks in order to avoid the 30% short-term capital gains tax.

tl;dr version: after february, I don't have to work for a few years!

Over the summer I got a job as a construction worker making Bolted/Welded storage tanks, mainly for oil and water. Now I'm back in school so i only work part-time doing little things whenever there's an opening. I really liked making bolted tanks, since i was constantly doing something different, and moving around all day. I didn't enjoy the welded tanks as much since i was only a helper or fire-watch and I wouldn't be as active. I'd much rather be in the 100 + degree California weather and be active than sit in an air-conditioned office all day.

I got payed fairly well, and i got at least 2 hours of overtime every day, which meant some pretty sizable checks at the end of the week. I still live with my dad, and i don't have to pay rent, but i help out with bills when i can.

University student, Biochem major, drinker, slacker, sex fiend*

Some days, I work as often as a Hippowdon uses Stone Edge and Slack Off like it uses Slack Off...But I've got some more years until my day of reckoning.

*The last part is not really true, sadly.

A mooch and an artist (Nothing professional or anything, just doodles selling for like, 2 bucks)

Other than that I'm barely a student :A

I work at Canadian Best Buy as a part-time job to help pay for my university tuition and to take my girlfriend out on dates. It's okay. I get paid a few dollars higher than minimum wage and I work in the gaming department selling video games (who would've thought) so it's actually somewhat enjoyable.

I'm working part time as a private contractor for an individual writing a piece of software, getting paid $25/hr. It's pretty good when you consider that I basically only work 15 hrs a week or so, and I'm 16. I don't think he knows that though =P

I'm teaching English to children in Korea at the moment, which is great fun as I speak almost no Korean (but I'm learning). I work in a private academy, so I only have small classes (maximum of 12 students, usually closer to 6-8). I work on average 4-9pm, Mon-Fri (18 hours a week total). It pays pretty well, I get a free apartment, and the general cost of living is a lot lower here than back home (England)

i work in a really nice restaurant as a chef/ waiter/ handyman/ whatever else my boss makes me do... the hourly wage is pretty much shit but i usually make 2-3x my hourly wage a night in tips. lots of rich people in my area i guess haha. i really enjoy my job, the people i work with are all great in their own ways and my boss is awesome. if a customer is repeatedly rude or impossible to please she'll kick their ass out. the hours are also ideal for me 5-10pm on the weekdays and 6-11pm on fri/sat with sunday and monday off

stock assistant at argos, the pays average but I'm expecting shitloads of overtime over xmas as apparently argos see more business at christimas time than any other UK retailer. It's an alright job...it's perfect to keep me going until I join the Parachute Regiment next year (yeah I know I've been saying that since I joined but I really mean it this time hopefully!)
