What I noticed to be affective in VGC10 play is Shedinja. If it carries SunnyDay then it basically can't be beat. It can play a huge role or can be beat in a second. I want to cary it but the chance of failing is just to much.

Use it as a sub.

Nah, shedinja's just too weak overall (not just it's 1HP). If you remember Mano using a shedinja in the Worlds Semifinals, the ONLY reason it lasted at all was because it scored a Crit on his opponent's SuckerPunching Toxicroak.

I have been Rnging for a while to make my VGC 2010 team(s) and at the moment I have been trying to get a set for Palkia. What are some of the most popular movesets that are known?

I have been going for...

Palkia @ Lustrous Orb
Timid
EV's - 252SpA/252Spe/6Atk
31/31/31/31/31/31
~ Spacial Rend
~ Surf/Hydro Pump
~ Thunder
~ Protect/Aqua Tail/Fire Blast

I've seen more surf over hydro pump but I did hear from some (some) Japanese guys that they hate how surf tends to hit even your teammates and unless you have toxicroak or guys with water absorb ability, it may be a huge hinderance so I am not too sure on that. Special Rend is there for an obvious reason and thunder is really for all those (seriously...if you don't already know...though I am pretty sure you guys already do...at least 50% of the teams here in Japan use that freaking orca pokemon) Kyogres. Now, I am not too sure which move to use for the last slot but aqua tail would be for blissey (though I haven't seen too many of these fatties) and fire blast would be for the flexibility under the sun and against the steels. Protect is for an obvious reason as it is one of the most used/abused move in VGC battles. However, I already do have a pokemon with protect and I am not too sure which move would fit best in the last slot. What do you guys think?

I think dragoon pulse>spacial rend personally, and i've seen a lot of japanese players doing that as well. You're only getting 10 more base power for that 5% chance to miss which could cost you. You are getting twice the crit chance but i guess if you are confident in your luck go for it

but really i think your best bet is with the safer dragon pulse, if it misses and you lose you have to wait till next year and its a small loss in power, basically 40 EV's worth of special attack :/

oh and protect in the last slot, its utility is just so amazing, and also i think hydro pump>surf, since in the VGC there are so many dragons and such that resist water that the spread effect isn't really worth it and it hits your partner as well. Plus, it actually has a 71.25 (95*.75) base power, which is almost half that of hydro pump, so it will definitely miss out on important KO's on the pokemon that you are using the move to kill.

but then again the 1/5 miss rate is really annoying, so it depends on how safe you want to play it

@Onyx Tiger: sorry my mistake, i have two teammates with protect already so what now? would you still prefer protect over the other two? oh and as for teh power, I almost never miss and personally 95 is actually good enough for me with the power it gets. Hydro pump...yeah it's a controversial issue for me but 15% accuracy loss is quite big even for such huge power (especially when there's rain already and surf actually does enough that there aren't any notable 1hkos or 2hkos)...but thanks i will keep that in mind and try it out over surf also.

I think not @ Lustrous Orb

why is that?
i am for one with a lot of the japanese players on the matter of choice items (if that's what you mean). they are absolutely terrible majority of the time.

I haven't even thought about walls when making my team. But i would either pick fire blast or if Palkia could learn Overheat, that could help. I am scared of walls but just putting that move just for a blissey or a lugia, is just to much of a waste if your opponet doesn't have one. I wouldnt over think it to much. And i noticed wall teams don't really win so i hope people don't use them.

I've lost for that. My opponent too! (Fire Blast and Hydro Pump respectively)

Don't take unnecessary risks

Hmm I see, but I feel like protect can also be useful
I guess I should get either fire blast or protect
I think you should definitely use Protect, incase you ever find yourself up against something about to explode then you've got some line of defense. It could even help you set up explosion too, or maybe even stall with Pressure.

after talking to some of the japanese players
1. majority of them prefer spacial rend and would disregard the 5% loss in accuracy
2. they most definitely like lustrous orb on palkia
3. they lol'd at blissey (mmm...) and likes either protect or fire blast for sunny days and steels.
4. they are concerned about hydro pump's accuracy so I guess I'd go with surf

mmmmmm still kind of confused hehe
but yeah i am also concerned about explosion quite a bit but not as much pp stalling

they both have "terrible" accuracy though :/
mmm

Where are you talking to these Japanese players at?

Japan...

Where do you think? Anyway, any recommendations on a TR dialga?

Ah yes, TR Dialga.
Dialga @ Shuca (there are others but I really do like this berry)
Nature: Quiet
IVs: 31/31/31/31/31/0 Spe
EVs: 252HP/252spA/6Def or spDef (but I would say spDef as there are a lot more special attackers in the meta)
- TR
- Dragon pulse/Draco meteor
- Protect/Thunder
- Flamethrower/Fire blast

TR is an obvious choice, especially for a pokemon that is considered to be one of the best TR setup pokemon. The choice between DP and DM is a choice between raw power and consistency, though I tend to lean towards dragon pulse more as this meta's fast-paced gameplay won't allow for much switching. Protect is an all-around fantastic choice for pretty much any pokemon but thunder is to abuse drizzle to hit things such as Kyogre while the last slot's move is to abuse groudon's ability. Well, that was my opinion lol.

No, I meant forums and such.

There isn't a japanese forum that is as nearly as big as the one here (not even close). Though, there are a lot of small groups and blogs of analysis on pokemon. Also, I am terrible in japanese so I tend to rather just talk to the Japanese players in the "streets". But I am fluent in Korean (these guys have almost the same meta as japan, which is cool) so I lurk around the net for Korean blogs if that's what I need to do. So yeah in conclusion, smogon is abnormally huge lol

I too enjoy Shuca Berry on Dialga in both Singles and Doubles. Especially with the numerous Earthquake users.

Ah I see you could also go chople or lum but lum (imo isn't as good as the other two) and chople (there are more eqs then fight moves) aren't as useful imo but they are options nonetheless haha. I've tried mixed quaza+palkia+kingdra+all sorts of pokies to try out mixed weather team that abuses other teams' weather as well but it seems like it's not really going to work btw lol.

My VGC 2010 Experience (In Japan)

Was fairly hyped up and looking forward t VGC 2010, just getting into competitive pokemon so I didn't expect to get far but to at least get a feel to truly prepare for next year. I had no clue just how short it would become.

I live in Shiga prefecture in Japan. The regional here was held on last Sunday (Jan. 24th). I went there with a few friends to check it out and had registered as part of the 'Pokemon Daisuke Club' in preparation.

Alas we were turned away at the door. The sign-ups to enter the tournament had ended 10 days previous (Jan. 14th) and those not in the tournament (Or there guardians for the Junior divisions) were not even allowed in to watch.

I did gather a bit of information on it though. To enter in Japan you need to be part of the Pokemon Daisuke Club (Pokemon Love Club) and your address has to be in the region that the regional is being held. On top of this you also have to sign up for the tournament, but those who do are guaranteed spots (no lottery). I am not sure if they had a maximum number of people who could sign up however.

They were giving away a Shiny Eevee at the tournament. Whether this is the same for all the regionals or just the Shiga one (or ones held this month) I am not sure. The Eevees are the Pokemon of the Month currently in Japan. There were some pretty spiffy shirts and other merchandize when I visited the Pokemon Center in Osaka earlier this month. There was a really classy pair of shot glasses (er... I mean 'tea classes... in the shape of shot glasses') that had silhouettes of Umbreon and Espeon on them. was very tempted to snag those.

Asked whether my friends and I could register for another tournament since we had missed this one. Alas... no. So my hopes are shot down for entering this year. But I will be able to prep for next year's since I will still be in Japan then.

A bit irked that I wasn't even able to get in to the area where they were playing to watch some of the battles, or even snag an eevee (though I did try to from outside the room it was out of range...).

Not too much useful info there but figure I would share it none the less. Now to prepare for next year.

Meh, when it comes to surf it really just depends on your partners. If you have partners that don't need to protect when you use surf you should go for it, but I don't think it would be a smart option when you are using say ho-oh or groudon with it.

also, protect is an invaluable move on all of your pokemon, as its utility is enormous. However, the ability to hit steels is also important as they will resist your STAB dragon moves. I would say that if you are lacking other attacks on your team to kill steels, which will likely happen if the rest of your team resists water and can take surfs (dragons and other waters/shedinja) you should go for the fire move of choice. However, if you do happen to be using a partner such as groudon, DON'T go for the fire move, and instead use hydro pump to avoid hitting your partner, which should be powerful enough to take care of steels.

but personally for steels I would go with earth power to hit both metagross and dialga.
