Default PU - NU in NU

I'll add more the OP as people play the tier~ Metagame Threats is a WIP
PU - NU in NU

#othermetas on SynIRC! - THE place to discuss Other Metagames (and thus PU!)

Introduction:

PU (What does this even stand for) are the Pokemon that even NU doesn't want, basically Pokemon that have less than 3.41% usage in NU are technically "PU". In PU, some Pokemon - otherwise regarded as bottom of the barrel - could become top tier threats. With the Pokemon ranging from lovable Luvdisc to the raging Rampardos, it's your job to find out which Pokemon and strategies dominate the tier (like VolTurn in OU).

Clauses & Banlists:

Clauses:
  • Species Clause
  • Sleep Clause
  • Evasion Clause
  • OHKO Clause
  • Moody Clause

Banlists:
  • Banned Pokemon - A team cannot have any of the Pokemon found in the following tiers: NU, RU, BL2, UU, BL, OU, and Ubers.
  • Banned Abilities: - Snow Warning, Drought
  • Shell Smash + Baton Pass: - Using a Pokemon carrying both Shell Smash and Baton Pass in its moveset is banned.
  • Drizzle + Swift Swim: - Using both a Pokemon with Drizzle and a Pokemon with Swift Swim on the same team is banned.

Threat List:

This sounds like a fun idea, but how different will PU be compared to NU?

Actually a lot of these Pokemon are good, it's just that they don't see enough usage in NU for them to make the cutoff. Kanghaskham is probably the biggest physical attacker I can see, whole there are a lot of niches for electric types- just look at how many good ones there are!

The point is exactly that. To put these pokemon in an environment where they are no longer trash.

If you've ever played NU you would know how fun it is to make teams and strategies using mons the typical OU player would never consider.

In this new realm, everything is viable and you never know what you might run into.

Some find this fun, if you don't, don't bother posting about it. You are not contributing at all to the discussion.

I think this tier is perfect to try out many of the NFE's that would otherwise be outclassed, even in NU. I'm interested in Nidorino, among others.

In addition, Trick Room is very viable here, with Beheeyem sporting the highest Sp Atk (i think) he is a very real threat.

Hypno, Lapras, Muk and Kingler also stand out as potential powerhouses.

Okay, just for reference, here's a list of the hazard setters and Rapid Spins, since a lot of people are going to be interested in that. Have fun! Let me know if I've forgotten anything.

Stealth Rock users:
  • Camerupt
  • Dwebble
  • Gigalith
  • Kecleon
  • Lairon
  • Lunatone
  • Magcargo
  • Mawile
  • Metang
  • Monferno
  • Omanyte
  • Piloswine
  • Rampardos
  • Relicanth
  • Shuckle
  • Solrock
  • Sudowoodo
  • Wormadam-S

Spikes users:
  • Dwebble
  • Glalie
  • Maractus
  • Omanyte
  • Whirlipede

Toxic Spikes users:
  • Ariados
  • Beedrill
  • Omanyte
  • Whirlipede

Rapid Spin users (and Natu):
  • Baltoy
  • Delibird
  • Natu
  • Sandshrew
  • Spinda
  • Staryu
  • Tentacool

Obviously, Gigalith is going to be huge, and Rampardos all of a sudden becomes the best anti-hazards pokemon since it pretty much beats all hazard setters through Sturdy and the use of Stone Edge / Superpower / Earthquake. Pretty much Metang is the only pokemon that can set up against it... huh.

Alot of these pokemon are actually really solid. Some of the most notable seem to be; Shell Smash Carracosta, Rampardos, Illumise, Rotom-F, Regice, and then NFE's like metang. Carracosta with Sturdy and Shell Smash would be able to setup reliably(with a spinner/heavy offensive pressure) and with the rarity of priority he seems like he could do alot of damage between Waterfall/earthquake/Stone Edge. Rampardos, like erisia said would be able to handle most hazard layers by just sheer offensive pressure. Also with its insanely high attack stat, it can really hurt almost every pokemon in tier. Even ones who are dedicated walls. Illumise with prankster could make a deadly support pokemon, possibly passing boosts or Substitutes to pokemon like Carracosta/Rampardos. Rotom-f has great utility and seems like he has a niche as a strong electric-type and access to decent defences. Rotom-F could make a great revenger for this tier with a Choice Scarf. Regice and NFE's seem like they would become the main walls of the tier. Regice has a great support movepool and good defences, while NFE's have access to eviolite and can reliably set up hazards/ wall, metang being an excellent example.

But yea this looks like a cool idea :]

Funny how some of these mons can be ridiculously hard to stop, even in NU. Carracosta's a quality setup sweeper, Relicanth is a beastly CB user, and only thing that checks Kangaskhan is prevalence of Golem (which can't really check it more than once) and the Tangela usage, and faster attackers. Rotom-F is just as good a scarfer as Rotom-S, and seriously who cares if a scarfer has a better defensive typing, when you can get unresisted STAB coverage in return and actually hit electric types and Golem? Linoone can single-handedly shit on the whole tier, especially against those token Volbeat-based rain teams that gives it a perfect setup moment. Rampardos hits likes a truck, and Throh takes all kinds of abuses like a boss. Regice is a big special tank, and Rapidash fast and strong.

I'm not sure about having this as an actual metagame. It'd be ok, i guess? But I see this as an excellent starting point for new discoveries in NU. I guess it's like that in other tiers, too, but NU is still really underdeveloped. (e.i. let the usage stats kinda balance out the mons so that the good mons go up)

Well, this is going to be interesting. I've built a most likely awful team, and I'll report back here on the results. I'm using some of the weirdest Pokémon... lol

Edit: Yup, I lost. Interestingly enough, though, I tweaked my team a little then took it onto the NU ladder for the hell of it, an area I have zero competitive experience in. I actually won my first two games, though lost the third due to a bad misplay on my part. This is a rather refreshing approach to the game, I must say. :)

No one is making you play it, haha. There's no reason to bitch at things other people do when you have no involvement whatsoever.

Hazards will really run rampant if this were to be a metagame though lol. Just use a couple suicide Spikers (Glalie?) / SR setters and you can basically win via offensive pressure (holy shit Kangaskhan wrecks).

lol how the fuck is Zebstrika in PU? It's a great rain check with a scarf and lightningrod makes it a full counter to choice Rotom-S.

I sweep with Choice Band Muk in RU so yeah I imagine that it will completely dominate in PU. Although I could see a problem with all the Psychic types that are in NU and also PU, but Muk can usually tank 1 unboosted psychic move and OHKO back with Gunk Shot.

Banded Gunk Shot wrecks PU.

Swords Dance / Agility / the Double Dance Kingler sets are probably some of the better boosting options with the Scarf set being a decent revenge killer.

Can't say much on the rest because I don't have experience with it

there are quite a few boosters down here (I think the simi monkeys could do some heavy damage with their speed and NP) and not many walls. I have feeling hazard stacking offense will be the main playstyle with the spinners just being complete garbage.

If this is ever officially recognized on Smogon server, I will be playing it in a heart beat

linoones in this tier? It seems really hard to stop, I guess we have to rely on Wormadam-S, Metang and stuff like that.

I'm open to battles in this tier, I've got an interesting team made already and will hang out in #othermetas.

Gigalith will clearly be popular though, and maybe scarf Dodrio?

you should not just list fully evolved mons for hazards/spinning. As there are very many NFE's that are as viable or even more viable this low down. See Pineco, Tentacool, shelmet, dwebble, etc etc.

well im not even sure if pineco and tentacool are in it, im assuming the come under "various NFE's"

Havent played it yet, keen to test this out though.

Seismitoad's proven himself to be a competent sweeper so far.

Seismitoad (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Swift Swim
EVs: 96 HP / 252 SAtk / 160 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Rain Dance
- Hydro Pump
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave

Simple, but effective. Rain Dance elevates this guy's power and speed beyond measure, in terms of PU anyway. He's been great even against regular NU teams too. :)

IIRC, Natu is in this tier, so feel free to use it as a rockblocker - it's a damn good one (Rampardos gives it issues, though).

In any case, these statistics will change very violently after the tier stabilizes next round. Nothing's getting banned now for sure and Rampardos got enough RW usage for people to realize that it's actually a pretty damn good anti-lead.

I suggest you watch your tone.

Anyway, I might try this just for Rampardos. I used it in OU last generation and I usually managed to get a kill per match; that was when I was a noob though.

well after giving this a go earlier and having a few battles, i think that this is a pretty fun tier, and being able to use cool stuff that is outclassed/just isn't good in some of the higher tiers is fun.

though with some pretty high powered stuff there see dodrio, gigalith, relicanth etc, its pretty hard to go defensive, and the lack of quality ghosts (though while saying that there is also a lack of spinners, though tentacool is good) means that its also hard to get hazards on your side.

though this is all theorymon because I've only had a couple battles.

One thing I've noticed is that some of the best Pokemon are Water/Rock types. Carracosta, Lapras, Relicanth, Gigalith, Omanyte etc. There's a bunch of Electric-types rampant as well, such as Zebstrika, Raichu, Electabuzz etc. Thus, Meganium and Bellossom will probably see some decent use as the Grass type can deal with so many pokemon in the tier. Victreebel, Shiftry and Leavanny are more offensive candidates that can also set up Sun and become deadly self-sustaining sweepers.

On an unrelated note, Butterfree looks super-deadly if it gets a chance to set up. Could it become the PU Jynx? :p

some notes,
pidgeot is a great scarfer, good stabs, U turn, and speed
Ursaring hits like a truck!!!
And beedrill has actually been the stand out on my team, good typing, toxic spikes to break down walls, and knock off for the multitude of eviolite users.

If it gets a chance to set up. It obliterates everything with Tinted Lens Bug Buzz after a QD, but getting him in in the first place is really difficult...

Linoone, on the other hand, is proving exceptionally difficult to counter, so that's probably the Jynx analogue tbh. There are Pokémon which can deal with Choice Band Linoone, but get obliterated by Belly Drum, and there are Pokémon who can deal with Belly Drum (by being faster or having priority, usually) but can't take enough hits to switch in easily. Revenging is tricky due to ExtremeSpeed, and he gets surprisingly good coverage. Any suggestions to countering this thing?
