Default CAP 3 - Playtest (Conclusion in Post #61!)

The Mollux playtest has commenced!

I chose nyttyn for this late night match as a rising contributor and a decent battler for this late-night inaugural match. The inaugural battle got off to a start with nyttyn's Sand team vs. my modified Rain team. Sash Dugtrio defeated my Scarf Terrakion in the first round and it was downhill from there for me. I badly mispredicted with my Specs Hydro Pump (as you can see here) when I should have let out my surprise Hidden Power Ground. From there we both managed to set up our hazards, but without Terrakion to check many if his team members the battle rolled over quickly. It was a good match though and showcased Mollux's ability to operate well in Rain.

And so the CAP 3 (Mollux) playtest has begun!

This means that you can hop on Pokemon Showdown!, make a team using Mollux, and battle on the 'CAP Mollux Playtest' ladder! Remember that the ladder leader at the end of this coming two week playtest period will be named the Playtest Champion and will go down in history for their work, so play strong! For reference, or if you're just walking into CAP for the first time now, you can learn more about what Mollux is and why it was created in this thread. You may and are encouraged to use this thread for discussion on the success of Mollux and what sets you find the coolest or the best.

You mean showcased Mollux's ability to roll well with Sand teams right?

Anyways, have fun everyone! Although I hope you all know I will be playtest champion.

Side note-

Mollux in sand?

Works REALLY well.

Now to try him in sun!

Edit: The repay is no longer viewable.

Right let's get more people on the ladder for some fun playtestings. To do that, I'm (not) generously disclosing a set for Mollux:-

Importable

This is a Rain-abuse / Counter-Rain set that works quite well, as given Mollux's niche, we'll be seeing monsoon seasons during most of the playtesting period. Double STABs with Electric achieved coverage well, since Poison is actually neutral against a lot, notably the mighty Dragons. Flamethrower has enough power to 2HKO Specially Defensive Ferrothorn without the accuracy and PP issues of Fire Blast, but the latter OHKOes after Stealth Rock, if you need comparison. Thunder is better over Thunderbolt because of the monsoon. Recover is self-explanatory, too, but Hidden Powers are slashed here to help Mollux hit some threats better.

This set is actually just another very uncreative Bulky Attacker, but it'll hopefully set off light bulbs in some heads. Hope more experienced players can give feedback and provide more moveset suggestions, if possible. If you want instant data on Mollux's statspread, just "/data Mollux" on PS!

If anybody has a link to a video or recording of the inaugural battle, they should maybe post is here for those of us that missed it?

EDIT: Never mind! Found it here.

Oh dear. Eating lunch at work right now, but this will be exciting. Good to know it works in sand like I hoped it would. Maybe we have another check to Tomohawk in the CAP meta game?

I'll build my team tonight. Be prepared.

I've used this set a few times on a sun team and it works wonders:

Mollux @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Illuminate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Eruption
- Overheat
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ground]

Mollux's insanely powerful eruptions, especially when boosted by sun, make it an extremely powerful sweeper. Baton pass this thing a calm mind or two for even more destruction. I'm not too sure on what it's best coverage options would be, but fire/electric/ground hasn't failed me yet. If you aren't using this set in the sun you can use Dry Skin over illuminate, but this set doesn't really have any reason to be in the rain.

My entire team just got my ass handed to me with this Mollux

Mollux @ Leftovers
Ability: Dry Skin
Nature: Modest
-Lava Plume
-Sludge Wave
-Acid Armor
-Calm Mind
EVs: probably 252HP/0Atk/0Def/252SAtk/0SDef/4Spe

EDIT: I just moved up to 15 on the ladder by sweeping a team with this.

So after a bunch of shitty teams/sets, I found this one to be very good (on a rain team):

Mollux @ Leftovers
Trait: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef / 4 SAtk
Calm Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Acid Spray
- Thunder
- Rapid Spin

He's like Tentacruel and Heatran had a baby that was based on the rain, and it's amazing. Thunder lets me beat Starmie if the rain is up (I could run Thunderbolt but I'm not sure if it would kill, plus the extra power from Thunder is nice) and Acid Spray forces some switches and helps out the rest of my team. Rapid Spin and Stealth Rock because I need to do something while I wall things. Max Special Defense because going Def is pointless since the only physical threats you can wall is Gyarados and Breloom if they don't have Stone Edge, and I only need Max HP to do that (oh, and Scizor of course). Speaking of which, Mollux does very well vs VoltTurn (unless Landorus is involved, which luckily I haven't ran into so far).

I think it's safe to say that this thing is DEFINITELY the weird baby of Heatran and Tentacruel. The annoying thing about Mollux is that he has some of the WORST four-moveslot syndrome in Pokemon because of his tantalizingly great non-attacking movepool.

Since he can do the jobs of both Tentacruel and Heatran, I always expect him to do both at the same time, but there aren't enough to do both. I find that Mollux works well in conjunction with Tentacruel to defeat Rain teams: one of them serving as an offensive pivot (Mollux) and the other serving as a defensive pivot (Tentacruel). One can set rocks and blast high-powered attacks, while the other sponges hits and Spins.

Gave this a spin on my main and an alt and while it was not "bad", it was not "great" either. The biggest problem I had was struggling to get it being effective on a Rain Team (where I trolled a significant portion of the ladder with Lapras), when I could just use Tentacruel for spinning duties, and Stealth Rock on Ferrothorn. I suppose I could run spikes but I guess the problem was that boosted rain attacks are not usually a pressing problem under rain, and against sun, its ability works against it (I was not part of the process but WHY does it not get water absorb :/ ). I have yet to give it a proper go on a sand team, so maybe it will work better there, I just think it struggles to differentiate itself, and its really limited both on what team you use it on, and what team your opponent is using.

I've noticed a significant increase in Dugtrio usage. It's been significant enough for me to consider running Shed Shell on Mollux, at least. Bronzong is also a lot more common than before since it can easily switch in on the Rock/Ground/Psychic moves that are the bane of Mollux.

I've tested this out a bit in Pokemon Showdown and I've found that it's very powerful in rain teams. Can't hit it with fire because of rain and resistance, can't poison or burn it because of its typing, water moves can't hit it because of Dry Skin. So the only weaknesses it has are ground and psychic. Yet, it can easily set up on unsuspecting foes by patching its not-so-strong defense with acid armor and bulk up even more with calm mind. If enough of these are set up, Mollux can ultimately live forever due to healing from rain and black sludge/leftovers. Possibly OP but it's a little early to decide that.

Bulky offensive Mollux works rather well on TR teams. It has the speed, spread, and just enough distribution to make it work.

Also Final Gambit @ Scarf is perfect for late game trolling.

I think Eruption is somewhat overpowered. Look at this battle log.

My Mollux set was not very successful however ...

Switching into Stealth Rock once makes it weaker than Fire Blast.

I am finding ScarfTar to work exceedingly well in this meta.

I've been using a team with Rain as the main focus, but ScarfTar on there to catch Starmies, Latis, etc to help clear Mollux's way.

My Mollux set has been quite simple:

Mollux @ Leftovers
Trait: Dry Skin
EVs: 4 SDef / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature
- Protect
- Acid Spray
- Thunderbolt
- Fire Blast

Plays around most things quite well. For the most part, the remainder of my team has been handling Mollux's checks and counters quite well. Protect is invaluable as it lets me switch into one of my 2 ground immunes on the EQ, my TTar on the Psychic, or one of my 2 rock resists on the Stone Edge. Of course, that means non-choice sets are much harder to deal with than choice, but it's a price worth it thusfar. Maybe HP Ice would be better in that slot, but I haven't tested it.

I think it's strong but it's only a problem if you let it be a problem. I battled Dusk209 with his Choice Scarf mollux and he destroyed me. But Mollux is relatively slow if you've got a choice pokemon that can take him down good, if not, get one because if Scarf Mollux can sweep you then there's a hole bigger than mollux in your team

Yeah, Scarf Mollux is one of the best sets if you ask me. I've been running this set:

Mollux @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 SAtk / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Sludge Wave
- Thunderbolt
- Trick

Mollux's speed of 76 is not a ton, but with a Timid Nature and a Scarf it hits 414 which outspeeds the vast majority of unboosted OU. Even with the focus on speed, Mollux still hits like a truck with its STAB moves. The majority of the time you will find yourself just clicking Fire Blast over and over, but Sludge Wave comes in handy as a secondary STAB, especially if the opponent gets up rain. Thunderbolt is the best coverage move you have, so its practically mandatory on the set. Trick is fun for messing up walls, though you are usually better off just powering through them with Fire Blast.

I uhh... did a thing. Check it out!

http://www.smogon.com/cap/pokemon/strategies/mollux

Although we can't get a full-blown analysis up until after the playtest (due to theorymoning issues and the like), I thought it would be cool to give battlers an ideas of what to use Mollux for on the ladder! Throughout the next two weeks, I'll be posting hot sets on site in this placeholder analysis for the enjoyment of all. I'll be pulling almost all of them directly from this topic. If you recommend an awesome and unique set, then you'll be credited for your work and the set will go up on site! So get contributing and have fun testing~

Good stuff, Birkal. Thanks for getting this onsite quickly. This should be a big help for new folks in playtesting.

(And in case you others haven't noticed, there is a huge spike in CAP viewers right now, as a consequence of the announcement. So, please everyone, be considerate to new posters and battlers on the server. This period is where we build interest in CAP and set the stage for our next project.)

umm just posting to say that if we are doing a rough draft on an analysis I would really like to see a Rapid Spinner / Stealth Rock kinda set. I ran 252 HP 252 SpA 4 speed (since I didn't know what to run lol) with Rapid Spin / Recover / Lava Plume / Sludge Bomb. People might have better spreads and moves than mine, I just rather liked it as a Rapid Spinner.

Mollux @ Leftovers
Trait: Dry Skin
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
- Lava Plume
- Sludge Bomb
- Recover
- Rapid Spin

I've been using mollux as a spinner on my team as well since I have it paired up with volcorona. My set was very similar to yours with the only difference being I used fire blast instead of lava plume. It does it's job really well since it can totally wall ferrothorn to get rid of hazards immediately, it has many other opportunities to switch in and it can even switch into hazards at times despite its sr weakness because of its great recovery. I definitely think it deserves a rapid spin set

Double Setup Mollux aka The Immortal Mollux

Mollux @ Leftovers
Trait: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpAtk
Bold Nature
- Acid Armor
- Calm Mind
- Recover
- Acid Spray

Basically, the gist of it is that once you get it up on a waller while the opponent's steel types are down, you win. Via a combination of extremely high boosted stats and a move that further lowers the special defense of your opponent, not even Blissey will be able to stand up to the acidic onslaught. You can substitute recover for another attack, but this is not reccomended. This thing has to be run on a rain team to succeed, though, and you have to keep rain up. But if you kill you opponents steel types and their weather starter, its pretty much GG for you. At +4 / + 6 Defense, not even EQ will do much to you. And if all else fails it can PP stall in a pinch thanks to the truly absurd level of PP it has combined with the amazing over 20% of recovery per turn it gets in the rain.

Please note this set is sarcastic and is intended to show what exactly you should not do on mollux (that is, only use poison as your only attack, have two setup moves + recover, as well as no way to threaten steels or really be anything of a presence without a bajillion turns).

Nyttyn, no offense intended, but that is the most gimmicky piece of junk I've seen, lol. Anyone who has actually lost to it doesn't know how to team build. It seems like cosmic power + belly drum clefable in that regard. Fun but awful.

The simple problem is that it loses to every single steel in OU, anything that phazes, anything with a strong EQ, taunt, and Tyranitar, even if no EQ.
