Default Official Smogon University Simulator Statistics — August 2012

Hope everyone's excited--we're just one month away from our next usage-based tier update!

I've been a busy bee the past few weeks, playing around with a bunch of new analyses, and it's my pleasure to bring back today metagame and moveset analyses! There's still more work that need to be done on both--on the metagame front, I hope to be able to define "semi-stall" vs. "full stall" vs. "offense" vs. "hyper offense" vs. "balanced" based on my new stalliness metric; with regards to moveset analyses, I'm hoping to add teammate and check/counter data--but I'm hoping the work that I've done already will be enough to satisfy you for this month.

A new version of "1337" stats are on my to-do list, but--I'll be honest--it's not a top priority.

Anyway, that's my progress report. Let's get to the data!

Tier Change Projections
Tiers will be updated next month based on three-month usage. Since the last time I posted these kinds of projections, I found this post by X-Act, who is kind of my role model in life, which says that, based on data from only two previous months, you can predict usage for the next month by weighting the previous months' stats 20:4. So if I do that to predict September's stats--rather than just assuming that they exactly mirror August's, which is what I did the last time--we get the following predictions.

Check me on these--it's a new script, and I could have easily made a typo.
  • Mew down to UU from OU
  • Tornadus down to UU from OU
  • Meloetta down to UU from OU
  • Virizion down to UU from OU
  • Abomasnow down to UU from OU*
  • Cofagrigus up to UU from RU
  • Stoutland down to RU from UU
  • Absol up to RU from NU
  • Roselia down to NU from RU
  • Metang down to NU from RU (there's still time, Molk!)
NU<->PU

*Abomasnow would indeed be allowed in UU, since the UU council banned Snow Warning and thus would have removed Abomasnow from BL.

Moveset Statistics
In the interests of not wasting pastebin space on the single Delibird set that some idiot decided to use in OU, I'm only reporting the breakdowns for Pokemon in each tier that showed up at least 10 times and contributed at least 0.1% to the usage stats. The "most common sets" thing is kind of a crock, as any two sets that are even slightly different (Jolly vs. Adamant, Fire Blast vs. Overheat) don't get counted together, but I am working on an improvement that will involve cluster analysis.

Also, as I mentioned in the OP, I plan on incorporating teammate statistics into this data at some point, as well as lists of top counters/checks for each Pokemon (based on how often a Pokemon is KOed or switched out when the supposed counter is sent out).

PO vs. PS

I've stopped collecting usage stats for PO. I have never seen more than 10 users on the server since I brought it back. A server that sparse would be really easy to "game," since you can pretty much guarantee that you get matched against the opponent you want. So I guess that means our PO server is no longer "official."

Is anyone really going to mourn?

In other news, PS saw 268,977 OU battles this month vs. 142,936 last month. And that's not even counting the four days where we weren't collecting logs due to a rather unfortunate typo. Of course, we *were* down for about a third of July...

With a server that now often sees as many as 1,000 users logged in at one time, the effect on the less popular metagames is even more drastic:
  • The number of Little Cup battles increased nearly threefold, from 3,674 last month to 9,546 this month.
  • CAP saw a similar tripling, from 451 in July to 1,201 in August.
  • Ubers more than doubled, from 11,779 to 27,367.

So yeah! Things are going kinda amazingly, although more battles means more logs for my computer to have to analyze. Y'all are forcing me to look into optimization, and that's no fun.

Thank you antar! :) Holy shit, genesect is really high for being released only half a month ago.
Also, meloetta and virizion are both really low, both are going to uu no doubt.
Virizion, mew, and meloetta... uu is gonna be really interesting next month.

Meloetta isn't such a surprise, you hardly ever see her in OU matches, but looks like we'll be having Tornadus in UU again, meaning rain teams have their favorite setter again. I'm wondering how Meloetta will fare, clam mind + 3 attacks is kinda hard to pull off with Heracross running around waiting to impale Meloetta should her HP fall at an acceptable level. I'm guessing because we have rain she'll most likely be going mixed being the unrivaled Thunder Serene Grace spammer, I'm not too confident in Relic Song + 3 attacks since UU is well guarded against fighters thanks to the previous drops and Hera. I can see Virizion getting some good mileage in UU since Rain might be making a comeback.

What really makes me happy with these stats though is... Chansey getting more usage :D I never want to see that blob in UU again so OU spam her more! I'm not too happy about Mew returning since my biggest gripe about facing Mew was that it was an excellent Baton Pass member, you just could not tell it was going to be a BP mew until it does an odd boost, its incredibly bulky compared to other passers and has access to a plethora of quick boosts.

Nice to see HeraBOSS take his well-deserved title as #1 Pokemon in UU; its attacking/revenge killing capabilities are phenomenal and can win you games without the aid of other Pokemon.

Quote:
| 67 | Virizion | 10220 | 1.900% | 7960 | 1.827% |
With the advent of the Therians, Virizion's life in OU is finally coming to a close. I suppose this is expected though, as its usage has been on the downward trend for quite a long time anyway.

Quote:
| 81 | Charizard | 535 | 0.977% | 435 | 0.992% |
The fact that this even comes close to making 1% usage in Ubers is beyond me. Have its users not read this article? This is grossly inferior to all other Fire-types in Ubers, and shouldn't even be scraping 0.5%.

Quote:
| 52 | Chansey | 11651 | 3.483% | 6874 | 3.436% |
I'm really hoping that this doesn't have its usage drop any more; I really do not want to have this co-operating with Snorlax in absorbing all special attacks in UU with their fatness (if it does drop, let's hope it gets quickbanned...)

That's pretty much all I have to say about this month's stats; again, thanks Antar!

I can't remember what the cut off is exactly but it looks like if Hippowdon and Abomasnow keep it up we may see all fully evolved weather inducers in OU. It just goes to show how weather more specifically rain is dominating the metagame right now. I really don't understand why no one is using Ditto which should be a staple on almost any team.

What exactly are the Trick-weather teams , like TrickRain, under Metagame Analyses? Trick Room + Weather? I tried looking in the links that you said that explains that they mean, but I couldn't find them, and I was curious.

Also its very interesting comparing the OU and DW OU usage stats, and seeing how vastly different they are, specially for stuff that don't benefit from DW, like Landours-I being 11 in DW, but 47 in regular OU.

It's 3.4%, I believe, which means Abomasnow just misses out.

Quite impressed to see Breloom in the top 10. I'm very surprised Keldeo and Reuniclus are so low and Ditto missed the cutoff; I remember when people talked about these three like they would be permanently top of the meta and be kicked out to Ubers.

46 | Keldeo | 27190 | 5.054% | 20558 | 4.719%

Genesect and the Therian-formes partly explain for Keldeo's remarkably low position on the usage statistics. A Choice Specs set decimates the top 10 in Standard OU, but seems out of favor for the most part due to popular ScarfGene/Thund-t sets and the blistering speed of Torn-t.

I think we can expect places to shift around all across the boarder immensely come next month.

Tornadus-T is #19? Volcarona below Infernape?
What's wrong with this playerbase o.O
And after all the hype, seems like Amoongus will stay NU.

Why are people still using this piece of metal SHIT in OU? It does pretty much nothing against weather, has a terrible offensive typing, gets killed so easily it's ridiculous and if you want a Steel/Psychic mon so badly, use fricking Jirachi, which has about a million more uses than this thing. This was put in the list of what not to use in the Smog for a reason, yet it's actually HIGHER on the stats. UGH. X.X

| 46 | Keldeo | 27190 | 5.054% | 20558 | 4.719% |
Sad how something like THIS gets left in the dust, what with its ridiculous Hydro Pumps in rain and all. I really expected it to be like top 30 too. ._.

| 19 | Tornadus-Therian | 48580 | 9.031% | 37711 | 8.657% |
Again, recieved a lot less usage than I thought it would've, but I do suppose it's rain only pretty much. Still love this thing.

| 14 | Genesect | 56245 | 10.455% | 49204 | 11.295% |
Wait a minute, wasn't this only JUST released like 2 weeks ago? And it's already #14? DAMN. We may have a new #1 folks.

21 | Ambipom | 11151 | 9.647% | 9934 | 10.365% |
Kill me, NOW. People either must be trolling in retaliation to the Smog bashing it or just want to lose. USE MIENSHAO PEOPLE

Well these stats sure surprised the hell out of me. Either way it'll be fun to see how things go in the next few months~

The more people use Metagross the better-if that thing goes UU, then nothing is safe. Gligar? Ice Punch. Zapdos? Ice Punch. Chandelure? Earthquake. Everything else? Meteor Mash. Oh, and he also gets priority for screwing over Mienshao and Heracross. And he gets a free switch in on Roserade.

Nice to see that Heracross is number one in UU. Really surprised at Scrafty though. It seems he just doesn't have the stats to work in UU. I wouldn't be too surprised if he went down frankly, as both Heracross and Mienshao are IMO better fighting types to have. Mienshao makes a great momentum grabber with U-turn or SubPass, while Heracross is the better late game sweeper since it has ridiculous power after a boost or two.

It's interesting to see that weatherless teams are currently more popular (albeit very slightly) than weather-based teams. From my personal battling experience this month, I expected the weather to weatherless ratio to be roughly 2:1.

k let's look over them Ubers stats:

Top 25 seems fine...wait a sec....

| 26 | Latias | 4143 | 7.564% | 3255 | 7.425% |
| 30 | Latios | 2743 | 5.008% | 2109 | 4.811% |

Okay, what? They got their Soul Dew back, one of them should at least be in like the Top 25. Maybe I'm just stupid and Soul Dew only came out earlier this month...

| 29 | Arceus-Steel | 2811 | 5.132% | 2190 | 4.996% |

Arceus Steel didn't do too too bad, I just wish it was also in the Top 25 :/

| 51 | Lucario | 1036 | 1.891% | 815 | 1.859% |
| 56 | Arceus-Electric | 927 | 1.692% | 698 | 1.592% |

I still don't get why people use Lucario in Ubers, it's really not that great from what I've seen when facing it. Granted, I've never actually used it, but WHY is it above one of the best special sweepers, Arceus-Electric?

| 84 | Politoed | 523 | 0.955% | 486 | 1.109% |
| 85 | Arceus-Ice | 517 | 0.944% | 424 | 0.967% |

Why do people use Politoed in Ubers? Just why? Arceus-Ice isn't that great either but it's not as much of a waste as Politoed.

| 87 | empty | 504 | 0.920% | 0 | 0.000% |
| 90 | Deoxys | 426 | 0.778% | 333 | 0.760% |
| 91 | Heracross | 421 | 0.769% | 331 | 0.755% |
| 92 | Landorus-Therian | 420 | 0.767% | 342 | 0.780% |
| 105 | Arceus-Ground | 317 | 0.579% | 234 | 0.534% |

I have nothing to say to this

| 183 | Ambipom | 76 | 0.139% | 73 | 0.167% |
| 193 | Rhydon | 70 | 0.128% | 62 | 0.141% |

Noooooo

The RU lead stats seem pretty accurate, although I have a feeling more than 7 percent of teams have an Uxie lead.

Chansey and Blissey are big now. Combined they'd be just outside the top 10 in OU I think.

Also, it seems that RU is the most offensive of the main metagames judging by the metagame analysis.

Which is interesting, because I always thought of it as a pretty stally tier.
