[OVERVIEW]

<p>While Magneton may appear to be outclassed by its evolution, Magnezone, Magneton's higher Speed stat gives it a specific niche. With a Choice Scarf or a Salac Berry boost, Magneton has the ability to outspeed a much bigger portion of Pokemon in the OU tier than Magnezone can, allowing it to either revenge kill more threats or avoid being revenge killed while it's sweeping. Magneton still has the rare ability to trap and remove Steel-types from the game with Magnet Pull. When using Magneton, always remember to play to its strengths, or you are better off using Magnezone.</p>

<p>With a Choice Scarf attached, Magneton reaches 393 Speed, enough to outspeed many dangerous threats such as Adamant Dragonite and Gyarados after a Dragon Dance, Jolly Tyranitar after a Dragon Dance, and Starmie. Magneton can then proceed to revenge kill all of them with the appropriate move. Thunderbolt OHKOes Gyarados and Starmie, Hidden Power Ice destroys Dragonite, and Flash Cannon can pick off weakened Tyranitar and OHKOes Weavile. Explosion is always a good move to allow Magneton to go out with a bang, potentially taking down an opposing Pokemon in the process. Hidden Power Fire can be used if you want to quickly kill Scizor and Forretress. Note that Magneton will Speed-tie with max Speed Adamant Gyarados if you choose to use Hidden Power Fire.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>Signal Beam can replace Explosion in the last spot if you find sacrificing Magneton unappealing, as it can be used to OHKO Celebi and hit Grass-types harder than Hidden Power Ice. Hidden Power Ground can be used to KO opposing Magneton, Magnezone, and non-Choice Scarf or Shuca Berry Heatran. Discharge is also an option if you want to spread paralysis, but Thunderbolt is usually always better due to the extra power needed to revenge kill opposing Pokemon. Maximum Speed EVs and a Naive or Hasty nature are used so Magneton is as fast as possible while leaving Explosion's power intact. 252 Special Attack EVs let Magneton hit as hard as possible. If you do not want to use Explosion, Timid is the best nature to use.</p>

<p>Pokemon that appreciate Magneton's intrinsic ability to trap and KO Steel-types make great teammates. Dragonite, which resists all of Magneton's weaknesses, loves Skarmory and Scizor being removed from the battlefield. Flygon and Kingdra also appreciate the removal of Steel-types that otherwise stop them cleaning up late-game. Aside from Dragonite, bulky Water-types such as Vaporeon, Suicune, and Swampert make good partners to Magneton because they can easily switch into Fire-type Pokemon (Heatran in particular). Celebi, Breloom, and Shaymin can switch into Ground-type attacks that plague Magneton. Gyarados gets a special mention, because just like Dragonite, it also resists all of Magneton's weaknesses. Magneton will find itself walled by Blissey if it can avoid Explosion. Lucario and Infernape can force out Blissey and set up for a sweep as long as they avoid Thunder Wave. Gliscor can switch into any attack from Blissey apart from Toxic or the rare Ice Beam and Taunt it. Dugtrio can also trap and kill Blissey. Note that opposing Magneton or Magnezone can trap and kill Magneton if it is not locked into Hidden Power Fire or Hidden Power Ground.</p>

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>This set takes advantage of Magneton's decent Speed and many resistances (Steel in particular) to set up a sweep. The idea is simple: switch in on a resisted attack from an opposing Steel-type, preferably Choiced (for example, Choice Band Scizor's Bullet Punch), set up a Substitute, and use Charge Beam to raise Magneton's Special Attack. Once the Substitute is broken, Magneton can continue to use Substitute until it reaches 25% HP or less, where its Salac Berry will activate, shooting its Speed stat to 393. Magneton can then proceed to sweep weakened teams with its boosted Speed and Special Attack. Like Agility SubPetaya Empoleon, Magneton has resistances to common priority attacks used in the standard tier while having immunities to Toxic Spikes and sandstorm, as well as a resistance to Stealth Rock.</p>

<p>Substitute, in conjunction with Salac Berry, and Charge Beam are the core of this set, allowing Magneton to increase both its Speed and Special Attack stats, respectively. In the last two slots, there are quite a few options to use. The preferred combination to use is Charge Beam + Flash Cannon + Hidden Power Grass, which gives maximal coverage while being able to OHKO Swampert (which would otherwise wall Magneton). If you prefer to have a stronger Electric STAB, Thunderbolt and Hidden Power Ice can be used for maximum coverage between two moves. Finally, Thunderbolt and Flash Cannon can be used if you have Pokemon that can reliably weaken or remove Ground-types.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>The EVs are quite simple. Max Speed and a Timid nature allows Magneton to be as fast as possible, outspeeding every Pokemon up to base 125 Speed such as Weavile and Choice Scarf Tyranitar. 12 HP EVs allow Magneton to reach a HP stat that is divisible by 4, allowing Salac Berry to activate after three Substitutes. The remaining EVs are dumped into Special Attack to let Magneton deal as much damage as possible.</p>

<p>When Magneton gets going, it is reasonably hard to stop, but there are still Pokemon that can revenge kill it. Aerodactyl, Choice Scarf Flygon, Jirachi, and Heatran can all outspeed and destroy Magneton with their respective moves. Jolteon and Magnezone are also relatively safe from Magneton's attacks, since they resist both of its STABs. While rare, Electivire can switch into an Electric-type attack for a Motor Drive boost and proceed to KO Magneton with Flamethrower or Earthquake. Blissey, Snorlax, and Swampert (if Magneton is not using Hidden Power Grass) can all sponge Magneton's attacks with ease and KO back. Dragonite and Gyarados resist all of Magneton's weaknesses and scare off many of the aforementioned threats for set up time. A Swampert of your own can also check most of Magneton's counters. Dugtrio is another neat teammate to consider because it can trap and kill Magnezone and Blissey, while also KOing Jolteon and Heatran locked into an unfavorable move. Celebi can take Fighting- and Ground-type attacks that hurt Magneton and spread paralysis. Pokemon that benefit from Magneton's Steel-trapping ability make good teammates. Dragonite, Flygon, and Kingdra love the removal of Skarmory and other troublesome Steel-types, as they would ruin their sweep otherwise.</p>

[Team Options]

<p>Magneton wants Pokemon that can take advantage of the absence of Steel-types and lure out Steel-types. Gengar tends to lure in Scizor, and Dragon-types attract bulky Steel-types. With opposing Steel-types either eliminated or heavily damaged, Pokemon like Choice Band Flygon, Dragonite, and Kingdra can easily run through an opposing team with boosted Dragon-type attacks. Tyranitar is another great partner that benefits from the removal of opposing Scizor, while being able to take on most of the Pokemon that cause Magneton trouble, such as Blissey and Rotom-A.</p>

<p>The specially defensive Pokemon that plague Magneton are usually paired with physically defensive Pokemon, which means mixed attackers such Dragonite are very helpful in breaking the enemy's defensive core. Infernape is another excellent wallbreaker which does a lot of damage to Pokemon that give Magneton trouble, such as Celebi, Blissey, Tyranitar, and Snorlax.</p>

[Optional Changes]

<p>While Magneton has the same movepool as Magnezone, its lack of bulk makes a lot of other options harder to perform, so they are generally better left to Magnezone. Such options include the traditional Substitute SteelKiller set, Choice Specs, and Dual Screens. Magneton also has other moves at its disposal, such as Discharge and Thunder Wave, but again, these moves are better used by Magnezone, which boasts more impressive bulk.</p>

<p>On the Choice Scarf set, one can sacrifice some Special Attack EVs to power up Explosion a little more. However, if one were to add some Attack EVs onto Magneton, make sure that its Special Attack stat does not fall any lower than 327 (which is no less than 204 Special Attack EVs). This is because Magneton will lose the guaranteed 2HKO on Jolly Tyranitar after Stealth Rock damage.</p>

[Counters]

<p>Magneton's counters are essentially the same as Magnezone's. Blissey and Snorlax's massive Special Defense lets them take any attack that Magneton can throw at them with ease (barring Explosion). Celebi can also absorb most attacks that Magneton uses, but must watch out for the occasional Signal Beam, which will OHKO it. Lastly, Rotom-A can also switch into Magnezone without much trouble, but must rely on Overheat or Hydro Pump to do significant damage to it.</p>

<p>Depending on which Hidden Power Magneton runs, Flygon, Gliscor, and Swampert can counter Magneton. Zapdos can OHKO any Magneton with Heat Wave, but will detest taking Thunderbolt or Hidden Power Ice. While Choice Scarf Heatran will not enjoy switching into Thunderbolt or the rare Hidden Power Ground, it can outspeed all forms of Magneton and OHKO with a Fire-type move or Earth Power.</p>

<p>Dugtrio can trap and OHKO Choice Scarf Magneton that is locked into Thunderbolt. Opposing Magneton and Magnezone can also trap and KO Magneton that is not using Hidden Power Fire or Hidden Power Ground. Electivire can switch into Electric-type attacks, obtain a Motor Drive boost, and proceed to OHKO Magneton with Flamethrower, Cross Chop, or Earthquake. Thanks to Volt Absorb, Lanturn and Jolteon can switch into Electric-type attacks with impunity while resisting most of the other attacks that Magneton can throw at them.</p>

Quick message from my iTouch: since Magneton has 70 speed and is able to trap steel types like Magnezone in addition to outspeeding ScarfTar with a speed boost, I think Magneton deserves a SubCharge set with a Salac berry. Not only does magneton get a second chance to hit Scarf Tyranitar before its Substitute dies, but it outspeeds Starmie, Raikou, opposing Scarf Magnezone, and the power output compared to Magnezone is almost the same due to 120 SpA.

Trust me. I had lots of winning experiences with salac maggy.

A very sadistic option, I would mention HP Ground due to the fact you can trap and OHKO Magnezone, and will always win against it unless it maganges to get a sub up. It should go in AC, not a slash though, because Magnezone does often carry subtitute, although it can't do much to you.

HP Ground also lets you take care of non CS/Shuca Heatran after SR most of the time (which is becoming more and more common due to f/w/g), if you are scarfed, so I would mention that.

I had also wondered about this. They key to the subcharge Magnezone set (IMO the only SubBerry set apart from Empoleon that should remain in its analysis) is that it can take choiced moves from steel types without the sub being broken. It is also important to survive weak physical priority moves after the activation of salac. Note that even steels that are not normally choiced can be of relevance, since I find it to be a good idea to support Magnezone with trickscarfers such as lead Uxie. The spread I theorised is based on outrunning Standard Weavile, which is admittedly speed creep, but Magneton will never be common and neither really is Weavile so this may be excusable: 44hp 4def 252spatk 208spe Timid. Note that 44 hp evs gives a multiple of 4. (edit perhaps 12hp 36def would be better)

Obviously its defenses are not as good as those of Magnezone, but its physical defense is good enough to take choiced steel moves from up to max attack Metagross (obviously not CB), including Scizor's bullet punch. However, Scizor has a chance to break the sub with pursuit, meaning that you are likely to get fewer Charge Beams in. Special attacks like Scarf Heatran Dragon Pulse cannot be subbed upon like with Magnezone (HP grass is OK though). Dragonite Extremespeed is also a serious problem as it easily does upwards of 18.5% meaning that after SR and 3 subs you can be revenge-killed.

As for power, it is once again slightly down on Magnezone. It needs +4 to OHKO Scarf Tyranitar (although it is possible to get this) and may not be able to 2HKO 252hp Bold Blissey with this either. However, I think that it will get the KOs that it needs as long as it can attain the same number of boosts as Magnezone.

Also, this seems to be an odd time to add another steel trapper analysis, since the usefulness of Magnezone and hence Magneton has recently decreased sharply, with a shift from steels and fewer Dragons to benefit from their removal. I may well try the sets out, but it is likely that they will look bad just as Magnezone looks bad at the moment.

Edit @ ILoveLiza - it doesn't outclass Magnezone as Magnezone has greater bulk and a greater attack stat, but it has its advantages.

You should include that with Modest nature magneton can actually hit 1 speed point less than Magnezone while having a much higher Special attack and as such actually outclasses Scarf zone 100%. So including an alternate EV spread in the first set would be cool.

Outclasses isn't the word; Magnezone still has higher defenses and a stronger explosion, making him generally superior.

I agree that choice scarf magneton should be onsite, but can magneton function with a -s.def nature? Especially when I may want to potentially switch this in on suicune. Is losing that bulk worth powering up explosion? I'm a little iffy on the steel killer set, I'd probably rather use magnezone for that just due to its bulk (but this is not a rejection, just a thought).

Magneton can really only compete in pure offensive sets. It only makes sense really to use this as Choice Scarf for Revenge killing and SubSalac. Even something like Specs your better off using Zone because the difference in defenses is EXTREMELY noticeable when you try to switch into things.

SubRise Magneton does not sound like a good idea. Magneton's only asset is the ability to go past Tyranitar, +1 Gyara, ScarfKiss, ScarfTran, Weavile and Starmie. MAgnezone can't do this and Magneton can KO these guys just as easily as Magnezone.

Believe it or not, the extra defense does make a difference, especiaslly against neutral stuff. Magneton is not going to be setting up Magnet Rise and Substitute AND surviving an attack long enough to do what it needs to do, so having it as a fast eevenge killer is your best choice.

That said, at panamaxis' comment ; Yes it is, since Magneton isn't surviving as long as Magnezone is, and considering its already low attack, getting as much power on it is the best choice, since even if you can't KO the likes of Blissey or Gyarados or whatever, doing enough damage so that they can't switch in again (or risk a KO) is a pretty good idea in my case, since either way they're switching, making them possible dead if they come back into Rocks or any attack (and you get to potentially set up SD Luke or SD Ape or whatever), OR they stay there making them fodder for Scizor's U-turn or Tyranitar's Pursuit or whatever else.

BTW, I was using SubCharge Magneton with JC's well though-out 12 HP/36 Def spread. The logs are in consecutive order, not cherrypicked. Keep in mind I'm only ommitting overly haxed battles or battles where Magneton didn't do anything (Which is pretty rare considering SubCharge).

Not that any of those three are too common, though. Magneton shouldn't be up against Jolteon in the first place unless it gets some LOL boosts. Which is highly possible since Tyranitar, Sceptile, Aerodactyl, and other Bullet-Punch weak Pokemon are "asking for it".

A steady amount of speed should be considered to outspeed Choice Scarf Tyranitar and base 120's, IMO. The metagame's infested with 115's and ~120's, so risking a speed loss by 130's isn't a bad thing, since Maggy should be behind a Substitute at all times.

You shouldn't be trying to revenge them anyway, just like you shouldn't try to revenge them with ScarfTar. Magneton is there because of its higher Speed than Magneton, which outspeeds the 361-392 range (See OP for the list), which has quite a lot of dangerous Pokemon in there Magnezone cannot touch.

As I've promised, I've done some extensive battling with Salac Sub Charge Magneton. Here's the facts and some trends:

• Magneton is reasonably fast enough to revenge kill some variants of Dragonite, unboosted Gyarados, Breloom, and Tyranitar even without a Salac Berry boost, turning Magneton into a somewhat potent base 70 Speed sweeper
• After a Salac berry boost assuming 208 Speed (courtesy of Mr. JC), Magneton has the ability to outspeed and possibly kill Pokemon below base 120 Speed, positive nature
• Can set up on, but not counter, Seismic Toss-less and Flamethrower-less Blissey
• Substitute sometimes 2hko's by Jirachi Iron Head, more by Choice Band Punch, this gives enough time to Charge Beam up
• Has a pretty reasonable amount of resistances and defenses, so it can Substitute in the names of choiced Gengar, Starmie, and other resisted attacks
• Because of Magneton's less powerful Charge Beam, it has more opportunities to boost his Special Attack than Magnezone would.
• A Magneton at +1 Speed and +1 Special Attack is pretty much superior to a Rakou with +1 SpA. This can be achieved if you can Set up to <25% on a Pokemon and use Charge Beam once. You can't achieve this on Choice Scarved Pokemon though, except Scizor and Jirachi and choice-tricked steels.
• Against non-steel type opponents, a trend is that most Pokemon will be eager to break a Substitute, so Magneton can use Substitute Multiple times until Salac Berry activation, and possibly kill or set up one Beam.
• Has a chance to 2HKO Choice Scarf Tyranitar with one Charge Beam boost in Sandstorm after one Switch-in to Stealth Rock
• You must be at least >19.8% to survive a Choice Band Bullet Punch if you nab a Salac Berry boost. Choice Scarf Jirachi obviously requires less
• Hidden Power Ice is better than Grass because of the BoltBeam combo, the ability to hit Grass-types (damn you Shaymin), and you can just employ a teammate to counter Swampert
• SubSalac Magnezone does not outclass this version of Magnezone. Magneton should be utilized for its similar resistances, Special Attack, and the ability to outspeed a lot of the metagame after a Salac Berry boost.

Having used Scarf Magneton in the past, i can attest to it working. I'm not quite sold on the Steel Killer set because the difference in Bulk is quite noticeable as others have pointed out. I approve of the Scarf Set, but not the Steel Killer. At the same time, I'm not rejecting the Steel Killer either. Ill probably test that a bit before making a decision on it.

k, i tested Steelkiller and the main issue i found with it was that it was too fragile to switch in into stuff (like vaporeons surf) outside of steel trapping. Magnezone is better for this role because it can atleast take these hits somewhat well. I'm gonna have to reject Steel Killer for its lack of bulk.

I stand by my approval of scarf.

As for Subsalac, its much harder to set up because of its lack of bulk but because of its higher speed i don't think its outclassed because outspeeding starmie and CS tar is nice. Magnezone is better a lot of the time but magneton has its niche.

Conclusion: Approve SubSalac and CS. Reject Steel Killer. Once OP is updated to this, ill approve
