Sticky Orange Islands SQSA Thread

There's actually a similar curiosity with their appearance in Lavaridge Town; IIRC in RS if you white out due to poison damage inside the gym after beating Flannery, the rival will be hanging around in the middle of town and you can avoid talking to them, but in Emerald I believe they'll automatically approach you once you take a step. Though it might still be possible to skip them if the last Pokemon Centre was in a different location (unless the game automatically sets it to Lavaridge? Idk. Might give that a try sometime).

Probably of interest to no-one but myself but I just tested this: in RS the Lavaridge Town encounter is entirely skippable with a poison whiteout - leaving and re-entering the town, as well as the gym, doesn't re-trigger the encounter so May/Brendan will just stand around outside the Pokemon Centre until spoken to. In Emerald the encounter starts automatically once the player whites out and reappears: the game sets Lavaridge Town's Pokemon Centre as the last one automatically (even if it hasn't been visited) so there's no way to spawn elsewhere.

What is the fastest way to get Nature Mints in SV? I booted up Violet for the first time, got screwed on my Spigatito's nature (Calm), and can't soft reset because I left autosave on.

After obtaining the Balance Badge, if the player is on a map with eligible Trainers, each Trainer on the map has a separate 31% chance to be ready for a rematch after 255 steps taken. This 255 step counter is only reset if one (or more) of the eligible Trainers did get the 31% chance triggered and is now ready for a rematch. Should no Trainer be ready for a rematch after the 255 steps simply reloading the current map (by e.g. exiting the current Route and re entering it) will reroll the 31% chance. This can be repeated until a Trainer is ready for a rematch.

How does Trainer's Eyes in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire Versions *actually* work? I would like to have a rematch with Bug Catcher James. I take over 255 steps and quickly re-enter Petalburg Woods from Route 104 many times. Lady Cindy, Lass Haley and Rich Boy Winston have already been made available for rematches. If Bug Cather James declines a rematch after my re-entering Petalburg Woods over 20 times, I am astronomically unlucky. Do Cindy, Haley and Winston trigger even if they are already available for a rematch?

1. *Cindy, Haley and Winston are each available for a rematch*
2. Go to North Route 104
3. Walk 255 Steps
4. Go to Petalburg Woods
5. James is unavailable for a rematch
6. Go to North Route 104
7. Repeat (4) through (6) indefinitely?

Hm, have you tried walking 255 steps while in Petalburg Woods before checking if James was ready to battle?

1. Go to Petalburg Woods.
2. Walk 255 Steps.
3. Use Trainer's Eye to see if James is ready.
4. If not leave Petalburg Woods & re-enter it.
5. Repeat Step (2) though (4) a few times to see if that works.

If that doesn't work, maybe you need to defeat Cindy, Haley and Winston before doing a reset?

Maybe someone can comment on the technical aspects, but walking in Petalburg Woods worked.

If I can hazard a guess, in order to reset the RNG % chance of trainers you need to walk the 255 steps in the location those trainers are in, then it locks those in unless you walk in-and-out of the area & walk 255 steps again. That way you can leave and come back to the location later and still have the trainers who did respond to the Trainer's Eyes/Match Call available to battle.

What are all the known glitches in gen 3 that can be used to generate or edit a Pokemon, like how the Pomeg glitch can be used to generate eggs whose species depends on your Pokemon's EVs?

What's the best way to grind in RBY's postgame? I'm deciding to complete a Pokédex in Yellow for the first time, and I was thinking of how I'd handle grinding out evo levels for some Pokémon, especially Dragonite. I was thinking maybe replaying the Elite 4 with the exp all in my bag, and a team of just Dratini and one of my team soloing the league? Even if I don't beat every member, that sounds efficient enough and a good way to grind out money for the eventual Porygon as well. Is there a better method I'm missing?

Oh, and the same question for GSC, actually! I'm not sure yet if I want to do complete the Pokédex in Crystal too, but I may as well find out if anyone here knows in case I do decide to go for it eventually

Get some strong Pokemon (Probably Mewtwo...) then just spam the pokemon league

Cerulean cave has high leveled Pokemon, and even Chansey in some parts of the cave, but I am pretty sure the time to exp ratio is way better just going through the league again and again.

Doubly so for Gen 2, where the strongest wild pokemon in Mt Silver are weaker than gen 1's cerulean cave

I'm pretty sure "grind the Pokémon League" is the answer to this question for at least the first five generations and XY.

When did the whole "if you defeat a static encounter it respawns after you beat the Elite 4" thing start?

From https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_wild_Pokémon_from_in-game_events:
Platinum is when it generally started for all legendaries, but Diamond/Pearl did it for just Dialga/Palkia respectively.
Technically FRLG was the first game to reset legendaries on defeating the Elite Four, but only the event ticket legendaries.

Apparently FRLG also seemed to introduce being able to run from legendaries and respawn them when re-entering the area.

I'm a bit late to add onto this, but HGSS had Gym Leader Rematches, which are annoying to unlock because of needing to get theirr number then call them at a certain day of the week and time, and an alternative I used back in the day for XY is the Battle Chateau on Route 7.

It takes a while to Rank Up enough in the Battle Chateau for the Furisode Girls to show up, so I'm not sure if it's worth sinking time into now they they aren't the newest games, but their Audino give a lot of Exp and Gym Leaders have higher Levels than the Elite Four if you send Writs of Challenge. (But you should just beat up everyone until Grand Duke/Dutchess Rank because that rank requires beating everyone once.) Writs of Invitations make trainers quick enough to keep bringing in new victims and you will get your money back from robbing invitees.

HGSS Rematches were "annoying" to unlock but within their time period you could call them as many times as you wanted so I found them much quicker & easier than the E4 runs

I felt similarly about DP & FRLG. It was just generally quicker to hang out in the high level trainer areas and use VS Seeker.
Gen 5 grinding I think I did just try to stick with Audinos & lucky egg; the E4 just took a bit too much time to run through. High end areas still had high level evolved Pokemon too which helped. And the daily stadiums actually have a lot of trainers in them to burn through, those were useful (though a bit too varied in the exp offerings)
I can't remember what I did with XY grinding. Honestly might have just hung out in the high level areas like Victory Road. XY's E4 has a ton of downtime, so even though wilds give less exp it still took les time overall (or felt as much, anyway).

In general I found that around FRLG the post-game E4 is just very time consuming due to a mixture of increasing production values and general quality of teams. Some games also have unskippable credits!

FRLG has a place vastly better than the Elite Four: there's a pair of Cooltrainers at the bottom of Sevault Canyon right by the house with the Chansey dance guy who both have teams of five Pokemon in the mid-50s. It's a very efficient grinding spot.

As much as I like doing Gym Leader and Vs. Seeker rematches for their own sake, I find them a little tedious to rely on for grinding (and the Battle Chateau is just tedious all round lol).

If your team can't just OHKO every E4 mon, then alternative grinding spots become much more appealing. Otherwise, I think raw exp and consistency make the Pokemon League come out on top.

EDIT: the rematch against Blue specifically is probably maximally efficient for grinding in HGSS because of the E4's level weirdness, but while this isn't a rational counterargument, I just don't like fiddling with the system clock and repeatedly doing the loop of leaving the Fighting Dojo and making a Pokegear call for every battle

Since I just mentioned the NPCs who hint at the existence and/or evolution methods of unseen Pokemon in RBY and GSC in a different thread, I was trying to think of all the examples of this - can anyone think of any others I may have overlooked?
  • there's two boys in Celadon Dept Store in GSC who're trading: one comments he's wanted a Porygon for ages, but then says it changed into a different Pokemon - his friend says he forgot to remove the Up-Grade from it before trading
  • in RBY, there's two (possibly the same?) boys who're trading a Kangaskhan for a Graveler, but the boy receiving a Graveler is confused to find it evolved
  • in RBY one of the Cue Balls on Cycling Road says that maybe some Pokemon need element stones to evolve (which is inaccurate for him, as he has a Machoke)
  • in Silph Co, there's a Pokemon Report saying that 4 Pokemon evolve by trading
  • in GSC, the guy you trade a Haunter to reacts to it evolving (though not explicitly)
  • there's the guy in Slowpoke Well who's trying to witness a Slowpoke evolution and says that "a Slowpoke with a King's Rock often gets bitten by a Shellder" before giving one to the player
  • there's the Bug Catcher in Ilex Forest who says "a Pokemon [he'd] never seen before" (presumably Pineco, but possibly not) fell out of the tree when he used Headbutt
  • a boy in Ecruteak City says that his Eevee and his friend's Eevee evolved in different ways, but isn't sure why (this one's only a partial example, as both Espeon and Umbreon are used by significant NPCs and thus don't really count as unseen Pokemon)

There's also the translation goofs of the two traders who say that Poliwhirl and Raichu evolved after trading, but those obviously don't count.
