Video game music discussion

Some do. I enjoy all of Myst's soundtracks, Legend of Mana's and Chrono Trigger's. Sound is very important for me in a game actually.

where do I start...

Shadow of the Colossus definitely, the music makes killing giant behemoth creatures truly inspiring. Of course Final Fantasy (nobuo uematsu) zanarkand, sephiroth theme, etc

Okami had some good tracks iirc as well as metal gear solid
Eternal Sonata was based off of Chopin I think

video game music is important to a game, especially if in tandem with stunning graphics imo. It's hard to make it through a game with annoying, repetitive music and the tracks certainly set the mood of whatever situation your character is in. I remember seeing some fps games with classical waltz and such imposed as bgm and it just isn't the same, obviously.

bluelaguna.net has some nice soundtracks from a lot of rpgs

Shadow of the Colossus, i can totally agree with

other favourite tunes are

Cid's theme - FF7
Frog and Robo's theme - Chrono Trigger
Final battle with Kefka - FF6
Forest Maze - Super Mario RPG
Bramble Scramble and The Mines - Donkey Kong Country 2
Flying Battery and Death Egg - Sonic and Knuckles
Jehct Fight Music - FF10
Twoson - Earthbound
Theme of Bad Boy - Mother 3
Butter Building Remix - SSBB

Hmm... Things that come to mind are of course the Legend of Zelda, Pokemon (especially considering the hardware), Halo had some good tracks, as did Kirby (especially Metaknight's Revenge and King Dedede's theme, and no, this opinion was formed before SSBB). I really wish KotOR had had better music, but it sure wasn't bad. Half-Life did a few good things, but the silence at some points overrules that. I also liked the hero theme from the Megaman Battle Network series, in all of its variations.

Shadow of the Colossus has some of the best music, one of the songs, swift horse, is one of my favorite videogame tracks.

Metal Gear Solid also has some of the best music, the best by far imo is the opening theme in 2-4.

SSBB had all the great tunes of the Nintendo Universe on it, and all masterfully done. Zelda and Mario's main themes are some songs that will never be forgotten. I always loved the boss theme from LOZ: Oracle of Ages http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DMtjBHmHTk

Fire emblem has some great music too.

and of course FF victory Fanfare cannot go unmentioned http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25xTkVy28GY

Overall there are a lot of games with excellent music there just isn't enough time to list them all.

Usually I don't really venture out of metal/classic rock, but a few of the video games I've played really did have amazing music.

One of the reasons I loved playing GSC was because the music was always so great. Some of the tunes got boring, like surfing and battle music, but all of the tunes out on various routes were just so... it's hard to describe, but they put me in high spirits.

I also really liked a lot of the music from Legend of Zelda - The Wind Waker. Everyone complained about all of the sailing you had to do in that game, but I really enjoyed the sailing, in part due to the music that played while you sailed about. Probably the broad sound and major key really just made me zone out and really just stop thinking about anything. It's a lot different from the Pokemon music, though, since Pokemon had a lot fewer sounds with which to work. I really don't think it would have worked if it were the synthesizer sound instead of the orchestra. The music that plays while you're fighting the sandworm boss is pretty intense as well.

Also in some of the horror games, the music is really essential to the game. Usually just listening to that music will get really boring, but when you're playing the game, the sounds or lack thereof really makes the games what they are.

Chrono Cross's entire soundtrack is, IMO, the best for any single game. Part of what makes it so great as well is that it's got variety; the upbeat songs (Time's Scar, Time of the Dreamwatch), relaxing songs (Chronomantic, Dream of the Shore Bordering Another World), sad songs (Star-stealing Girl, People Seized with Life) and eerie songs (Ghost's Island, Death Sea ~ Tower of Ruin) are ALL of absolutely amazing quality.

As for slightly less well-known games...Wild Arms 3 has a few really good tracks, especially if you like anything with sort of a Wild West beat. Persona 3 gets a bad rap for its weird main battle theme, but several of the more mellow songs (Memories of the City, Living with Determination) are extremely good and bring out a lot of emotion.

Oh God phew. I read most of the topic and got worried nobody would mention the CC soundtrack.

It's so amazing. You've got that solid opening track of Time's Scar, my personal favorite Shore of Another World. And then there are themes, backround melodies that just nail the mood of the game flawlessly. The soundtrack is probably one of the reasons why I like that game so much.

RPG's have got some great battle tunes. FFIX's and Romancing SaGa 3's battle themes are really something.

The legend of zelda, and pokemon IMO have had some great pokemon. Every gen in pokemon had its fair share of music. The only zelda music that stood out for me is OoT.

Holy crap, stolen idea! I thought of this this morning.

Giygas of course. Starts out forboding, gets epic at around 1 minute

yay skiddle posted some songs from the world ends with you. I almost listed that game, but it's just so different from what I think of as vg music that I hesitated. I got the soundtrack as soon as I beat the game though

All this praise of chrono cross has peaked my interest though, I might have to take a look into that one

I really enjoyed a lot of the songs that Crush 40 produced for the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They just seem to fit perfectly with Sonic's character and the flow of the games.

I also think I've been brainwashed by some of the Zelda themes. Anytime I hear one in day-to-day life (read: Brawl), I'm instantly in a sorta mini-trance and hundreds of Zelda memories just come flooding back alongside a giant urge to dig out the N64.

I think that a lot of the magic from video-game music comes from the memories and experiences from the game itself. It's difficult to explain, but as stand-alone songs they mean nothing to me, but as part and parcel of those fabulous childhood memories they really touch my heart. [/rambling]

AMEN!!!!!!!! I normally do not download video game music, but Time's Scar is quite possibly the best video game song of them all!!

But when you refer to video game music, you absolutely have to think of the Eminence Orchestra!!!! They perform many of the top video game and anime songs, and they sound so wonderful!

Game music is the best. I play all sorts of tunes that I picked up from hearing them so much on piano, and people who have never even played those games comment on the songs. They usually seem surprised when I tell them it's from a video game unless they know me. Then they're only surprised when it is not.

A few favorites to offer, since I've gotten several just reading here:

O2 - Kirby 64 (Not the remix in SSBB)
Ice Cap Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Kanto Gym Leader Theme - Pokemon G/S/C
New Years Day - Animal Crossing (Still haven't found this outside of the game)
Legend of the Deep Forest - Final Fantasy V

That's all I can think of off the bat. I have plenty more favorites from other great games, but to pick any one song would do the others a great injustice. Notable mentions include ANY part of the Mega Man series, Baten Kaitos, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy of course and a bunch of others.

I don't think there was a mine shaft type of level in DK2 (The original one had it, though) but I definitely agree with the bramble stage music "Stickerbrush Symphony." DK1 and DK2 were the first and second videos games I ever owned, and that tune has carried with me since my early childhood.

The song's called 'Kannon's Klaim' in the DKC2 GBA sound test, but many call it Mining Melancholy.

There were actually, Squaks' Shaft and Windy Well are the two mine themed levels that I remember. As far as retro music goes, though, Donkey Kong games do indeed have some of the best. Stickerbrush Symphony is the obvious one, but the themes for King K Rool (DKC), Water levels (DKC), Woods (DKC 2), and Cliffs (DKC 3) also deserve recognition.

The Genesis Sonic games are an absolute gold mine of quality retro music, too. Ice Cap, Lava Reef, Flying Barrage, Scrap Brain, Metropolis, Chemical Plant...way too many to list.
