Gengar

I trained a timid gengar (252 SPA 252 SPE), he currently have shadow ball, thunderbolt, hypnosis and dream eater.

His Hidden power would be Steel, which could possibly be neat if I do not take focus blast.

My problem is, I want him to be able to take as many types as possible and be super effective against most of them. I am not into hidden power breeding, unless it is easier then I think so getting hidden power fire is not much of an option for me.

Now I'm making it way too long for a simple question so here it is.

Is gengar defeated in 1 hit most of time? (making focus punch very risky). Is teaching it psychic a very bad idea? Would energy ball+hidden power steel/focus punch be a great idea? Anything else I could consider?

Effort Values

I am just starting to learn about EVs and IVs. The following are my simple questions:

1) Have captured Pokemon in the wild already accumulated EVs? (E.g. I catch a Lv41 Rhydon on Victory Road. Has it already accumulated a random set of EVs for its 41 levels, or is its EV slate blank?) By which, I mean to ask: If I capture a level 10 Pokemon and a level 40 Pokemon, each with the same species, Nature, and similar IVs, would I be much better off training the level 10 or the level 40, statistically speaking? And is it possible to put the captured level 40 into an IV calculator, sans leveling it at all, and get accurate numbers? Or have EVs already been factored into its stats?

2) If the above question is "Yes," then is it best to train a Pokemon manually from level 1 onward, so that it receives the maximum number of possible EVs?

3) Is there any other accurate means of calculating Individual Values for low-level Pokemon, aside from Lv100 battles? I do not currently have any friends with the game, so I don't have any way to get my bred Pokemon into the proper environment.

1)Wild pokemons do not have any EV. Which mean it is easier to know their IV then lvl 1 pokemons. Statistically, training a lvl 40 VS a lvl 10 with the same IV changes nothing. They will have the same stats at lvl 100 (if trained the same way of course). *someone correct me if I am wrong btw*. You might want to train the lvl 10 tho for attacks. Maybe there is X attack that he learn at lvl 15, but the lvl 40 learned 4 new abilities between lvl 15 and 40 and thus doesnt have it.

http://www.legendarypokemon.net/javacalc.html helpful calculator for IV. Sometimes the hidden power is not correct, but most of the time the IV's are fine.

2)I just want to mention that the point of breeding is for egg moves, IV's, sometimes for abilities and making a pokemon relearn a lower level ability (if you don't feel like using an item to teach it to your lvl 100).

3)The calculator I gave you is a good bet. It is impossible to calculate IV at lvl 1 as babies of a given specie always have the same stats (with some minor differences because of NATURES and not IV's). That is where rare candies come in. Save the game, give them all to the pokemon, go on the calculator, check his IV's, restart the game without saving so you still have your rare candies.

@Kalarm: I would very much not recommend using hidden power steel. Hidden power fire is useful for hitting scizor, who normally walks all over gengar. What would hidden power steel hit better than thunderbolt or shadow ball? Tyranitar potentially, but you would be better off with focus blast for that. I would also very much not recommend using psychic, as it has redundant coverage with shadow ball. Dream eater is even worse than psychic as it only works on sleeping opponents. If you sleep an opponent, they will switch, dream eater will almost never work.

Gengar is not that fragile; it will generally live through one attack. However, it will die in one shot to most powerfull or stabbed super-effective attacks. It's immunities make it much more survivable as you should only be switching it in when it won't get hit.

Energy ball gets poor coverage, use it only if your team has big swampert problems.

For your moveset, I would recommend shadow ball, thunderbolt, focus blast, hypnosis/substitute. Substitute creates problems for switching foes, protects from pursuit and status, and can help you beat blissey. Explosion would normally be my #1 choice but you gengar is timid.

@Euthanasia: Pokemon in the wild have a blank EV slate, no matter what level they are. If you level up the level 10 rhydon to level 40 and the two have the same IVs and EVs they will have the same stats. If you want to use a rhydon competitively, however, you would most likely want to breed for better ivs/nature/egg moves, rather than use one for the wild.

I knew that breeding for better IVs is key to competitive battling, I just wanted to be sure that wild Pokemon have no EVs so I can gauge which ones to breed for the IVs I want. I appreciate the clarification, though.

These are the current UU analyses being worked on

And you could look at the usage statistics stickied in Stark, that should give you an idea of what to expect.
Just to help, Shaymin, Crobat, Yanmega, Blaziken, and Mismagius are the offensive threats to be most concerned about(there are a lot more, but I can't list them all), and defensively, Regirock , Registeel, Steelix, and Chansey are tough as nails.

Thanks, this helps. I noticed no one's working on a Venusaur update... it he still UU viable? 252 HP/252 Def Bold is my old standard...

hey guys, I got one.

IF you 1 of your opponents pokemon asleep, and then you yawn another one, does that break the clause or is it your opponents fault if they let their pokemon become asleep. What I'm trying to say is that if you have someone asleep and you yawn another pokemon are you breaking the sleep clause?

I don't think anyone answered this question of mine.

The analysis doesn't clarify, so if you want the real answer you'll have to hunt down the person that made the set. My best guess is that Dragonite attracts bulky waters and other physically defensive threats that it'll hit hard. That and Outrage blows if it's not boosted.

I know, I used to breed, but they aren't like, ridiculously better or faster now?

It's a very complicated process and not exactly easy to manipulate. It's not just something you can pick up and run with, in fact it has caused many breeders to say eff it and continue the 'traditional' way. So regular breeding is still completley viable, it's not like RNG manipulation is trendy or commonplace.

It breaks the clause and you (should) forfeit, unless you KO them or do something to prevent it fast. On shoddybattle it just prevents the sleep though.

can someone show me a post that shows me the warstory format, and where can i find those cool sprites you see on the good warstories?

also, where do i post warstories??

apparently i can't download the .net thing because i need windows service pack 2 or something
is there any other way i can do it?
is manually doing it an option?

hey how does some one else with pokesav find my secret ID

and can you tell me any one who would be willing to help? i've tried simple requests but nobody responds and the reuqest eventually gets pushed back three pages

Imprison: In Double's Battles, does Imprison also affect your allie, or only the Foe's? I think it is mentioned in Obi's article or something, but I can't find it.

If Backlot have said that ditto can be found in his trophy garden

After two days, will Backlot says that there is a ditto again?

In bulbapedia they said that
" On any given day, the "planted" Pokémon that was in the Trophy Garden the previous time Mr. Backlot was last spoken with will also still be there, allowing a two-day window to catch each of these Pokémon."

In my case, I talked to Backlot and he said that he found a ditto in his garden, and after that i didn't play this game for a week, so will he says that there is a ditto again?

Sorry for my poor english....

Quick question: If my Custap Berry activates am I still confined to moving last if Trick-Room is active??

Example: Opponent used Trick room turn one, Damages me into 25% health later down the line. When custap berry activates does it ignore trick room/chlorophyll/swift-swim and attack first regardless???

Thanks

its like this one monday he says there is a ditto
you go find him, on tuesday he says there is a minun however the ditto he told about on monday and still be found on tuesday, that is what the two day window means,

also the pokemon you get is random, comeback a week later he might say ditto or he might say porygon

AFAIK, Custap makes you go first, and negates priority and speed completely. I could be wrong though, so wait for somebody to confirm.

Yes, you can manually do it. Look in the Warstory archive and read some example formats. There's no single way it's done, everyone does something different.

hey how does some one else with pokesav find my secret ID

Pokesav allows a person to view the code of the pokemon, letting you find out everything about it (Secret ID included). Deztroya can probably help you find them, I would PM him.

No articles had anything on it. According to Bulbadepia's page on Imprison, it does affect your partner. However their double battle page doesn't mention this at all. I would say it's an oversight on the doubles page though and assume it does affect your partner.

Ditto will not be there. The game runs off of your DS clock, which never stops. You'll have to reset until Backlot says Ditto is there again.

Cutsap adds +.5 priority, so you'll go first unless your opponent uses a higher priority move (like you use Return, they use Bullet Punch, they'll still go first).

So it's not only two days in game right?

And I can make Backlot to say it again and again?

Question: I am going to the vgs 2009 in nashville and I keep hearing that people use pokesav to gain an unfair advantage. If there pokemon are "Legal"
would they get by hack checks that the tournament has?
