How Did You Get Interested in Anime?

I didn't even like Azumanga that much tbqh. My friends got me to watch it and I thought it was mediocre. Haruhi is another series I find to be totally overrated.
Dragonball Z. Isn't that how every person over the age of 17 discovered anime?
No. I'm pretty sure the older folks saw something like Astro Boy or Speed Racer first. Or the original Dragon Ball.

Oh and just because you didn't know it was anime doesn't matter =P Shit, you think I even knew the word until like age 12? And I watched that stuff on TV all the time.

The Boondocks is a comedy anime. Just because it's not japanese doesn't mean it isn't anime.

Captkirby you can watch all of the childrens anime that you like but it doesn't make them adult and watchable to normal people. Dragon Ball Z is a joke

yeah I have things to do I'll write a reply later

Just because it's not animation from japan doesn't mean it isn't japanese animation?

Art style varies drastically even in Japanese animation. Saying something is Japanese Animation just because there is Japanese influence on it is really short-sighted. We live in the 21st century. There is obviously going to be influence from all around the world in different work. I mean, if Spider Man started using long slowly transitioning panels, would you call it manga?

Thanks for stepping out of firebot to shit on a topic Glen. It really added substance.

anime is a Japanese word, and it encompasses Japanese works; I do not know why it is so hard for you to call American animation animation or cartoons or whatever would satisfy you.

I think you misunderstand that I watch nearly nothing but anime like what you listed. I do not watch "girly" anime, as it does not personally appeal to me. I can, however, understand when it might possibly be good/great and that some perfectly well adjusted, productive, adult people enjoy them for blithe fun. Prejudice will get you nowhere in proving yourself right in an argument.

He's right though. I'm too old for One Piece. I'd rather play Pokemon instead. By the by, what do you think makes One Piece "unwatchable" to adults anyway?

it was actually an OOF at how you totally burned that other guy but it seems like someone gets cranky when he doesn't get his cheese!

anyway i don't watch anime at all, i just never got into it. it's something like to start watching since i know i am definitely missing out on some darned good stuff!

my only anime experience outside dbz and such from childhood, and spirited away a few years back, was

url

tekkonkinkreet, which, interestingly enough, was one of the best films i have ever seen. i remember being all riled up and thinking 'okay that seals it it is time to start watching anime!' but then i never did.

Sorry Glen (though it still was kind of insubstantial still I do not care if it was not insulting me :x)

tekkonkinkreet looks awesome, I will have to check that out.

You know what you should be watching Glen? Motherfucking One Piece. Uh, just remember that the first 26 episodes are total shit. But it gets amazing after that I promise.

EVERYONE should check out tekkonkinkreet, seriously. i don't know enough about anime to judge it by anime standards but by film standards it really stood out.

it's about two orphans named black and white who 'run' a segment of their city named treasure town, then the mafia comes and shit goes down. i can't really begin to understand the subtext because it's kinda complicated. i think it's about the dangers of foreigners/religion maybe? i don't even know. it rules though!

this is a really beautiful scene

the whole film is just visually stunning. the plot takes a really cool turn and the premise itself is pretty cool. also, stylistically it has so many cool touches to it, like for example the elephant lingering after the dream sequence is over in the second link i posted. also how black wears 96 and white wears 46 on their shirts, kuro meaning both black and 96, and shiro meaning both white and 46! so cool!

also i guess i was just really impressed by how it moderated itself. it really didn't go overboard with metaphor, and straight up naming the main characters black and white instead of trying to slowly show it through character development was, in my eyes, quite brilliant. probably the best movie i've seen this year.

i highly recommend it!

I'm not a fan of anime. Most modern animes are usually raped by irresponsible American dubbing companies (see 4kids and what they have done to One Piece and Sonic X). I liked DBZ and Pokemon when I was younger though.

I would have to say that watching anime was the only probable path since I grew up watching Fox Kids and Cartoon Network which seemed to grow up with me. Starting with things like Digimon, Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, and Gundam Wing. Then came Toonami and the Late Night Toonami which introduced me to Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bepop, and Tenchi Muyo among others. It was only natural for someone who had a pretty mundane existence to become attached to the TV and thus anime.

For me, mainly all the good stuff long since gone, like the old Toonami and Adult Swim on Cartoon Network (lol, adult swim used to have good shows), and the like. Still fondly remember good stuff like Digimon, Pokemon (like, season 1 and 2 only), Metabots (funny), Gundam (OMG, Gundam, best series ever), Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho, and all of them. Sigh...why'd Cartoon Network have to go fuck up and start spewing out shit...

I like comedies! Azumanga and Zetsubou Sensei are some of my favorite shows

Comedy that is inserted in shounen series is usually very dumb though

Yay someone who likes Azumanga Daioh!! I've also seen a few episodes of Lucky Star, I recommend it if you like that kind of humor.

I heard Hajime no Ippo was pretty good but I haven't watched it
Any opinions?
that is an amazing series. it was brought over state-side as fighting spirit because it was thought that no one would pay attention to it if they just translated the title (which is along the lines of "the first step")

Thanks for the suggestion, but even then I find most anime to have a ridiculous premise. I just don't see what's so great about a show that stars a blonde obnoxious retard with ADD.

That was an example BTW.

Actually, I havent seen an anime with a dumb blonde in a while.

the only anime I like and probably will ever like is pokemon, and I don't even watch the tv show

I was into yugioh before it turned to shit

and lol @ the lists of favorite anime series that don't include pokemon

Seconding that Hajime no Ippo is an amazing series. I watched it after a friend of mine suggested it to me, and I'm so glad I did. I haven't watched the movie, though, because the site that I was watching the series on required you to pay for full-length movies... I really ought to start using torrents.

Azumanga Daioh is pretty good, I like it mainly for the fact that you can jump in at pretty much anytime in the series and not having to worry about being lost since there's little in the form of a continuous plot (at least, from the little that I've seen). I tend to prefer humorous animes over more serious ones, though.

I remember a few months back watching an anime that was about rock-paper-scissors that was actually pretty good. Basically, the main character is deep in debt and gets caught by this private investigator guy, and is put on this cruise ship where people basically gamble for star chips and money by playing a card-based version of r-p-s; whoever manages to win so many star chips AND make enough money will be set free at the end of the cruise and has their debts paid off with the remaining money being theirs to keep. Whoever doesn't earn enough star chips or loses all of theirs ends up slaving away in some factory somewhere for several decades in order to pay off their debt. I can't remember the name of it, though...

Toppa Tengen Gurren Laggan = Best Mechime ever.

My favorites list goes as follows
1-TTGL
2-Blood +
3-FLCL
4-FMA
5-Soul Eater

Ooo if you like mecha animes, there was a pretty good one I remember from the late 80's. It was called Gunbuster, I highly recommend it.

I like mahou sensei negima.too bad the anime series are just bad, the manga is very good though, a good mixture of action, romance, comedy, and ecchi(lol). This thing is underrated
